Thank you @@olivergiles6731. Something I never knew. UA-cam where I get educated and Ted gets his algorithm boosted. Can't think of a better cause. :-)
I think Gibson should have a straight headstock, one piece. Also I think they should replace their bodies with strat bodies and bolt on necks. And put floyd roses on all their guitars. And have 12 to 16 compound radii. Then sue Charvel for not being authentic.
I saw a LP with single coils installed the other day in the Gibson Facebook group. You should've seen them flip their lids over that guitar. Saying it was ruined and was now garbage, firewood, etc...when literally all they had to do was unscrew the adapter plates from the humbucker ring screw holes, put the humbuckers back in, and install the rings & screws back into their original, unmodified holes. It was absolutely hilarious 🤣🤣🤣 They were all so hot that literally none of them understood that the guitar wasnt permanently modified and could easily be returned to stock.
I understand that people want the original gibson, but if there's a problem concerning the strength of the headstock (and tuning issues), why don't considering a solution? Changing the angle is not a big deal. Epiphone has a different angle, am I wrong?

I installed a piezo contact pickup under the bridge of my Martin. I was very disappointed with the initial ‘boink’ of the notes. Not wanting to give up on the installation, I installed the piezo with a piece of industrial two sided tape from my local hardware store. The rude initial attack sound was replaced with a normal acoustic sound. Players who are impressed with the sound ask me the brand of pickup I’m using because of the lack of ugly attack note. I always reply, “Radio Shack piezo buzzer. $2.98”. That’s what I have in the guitar and it’s the best sounding pickup. Full, rich and clear. No ugly attack. Go figure. By the way, I’ve been playing since I was 10, and I’m 68 now, so I think I know what guitars should sound like. . . . Hope we don’t get fooled again. God bless.

Terrible sound, No sustain without 30 compressor Pedals, too heavy, breakable headstock, and a Lot of more valid reasons Not to buy one.
The pickups are called blacktop filtertrons. (Affordable filtertrons, made by gretsch.) Looks pretty cool, but I'm rather disappointed because the thumbnail had me thinking this was duo jet. 😬
I think that Gibson wouldn't be completely wrong for changing the headstock to a Fender style but keep making their standard. Those that want a more durable headstock can go with that option while the people that want the classic angle can also buy that
wish my luthier threw in fret end filings with a setup, he charges me 35 extra (he does good work, so i’m not complaining). but the fact that you throw it in most of the time in setups that need it is super cool
wow! great job using the existing preamp and hooking it up to the K&K. It's great that you were able to use what was already there to improve this guitar.
"If you buy a Gibson you know it can break." (9:15) I don't know that that's true. I see posts in guitar forums all the time showing typical Gibson headstock breaks asking, "Oh my god! What should I do?!?" Not everyone knows that it's a concern with Gibsons. Which is not to say that I think that Gibson should change it.
Yeah but maybe only 3 of us know why it happens and when it started to become an issue. I will sit here and continue to let Gibson and many engineers wonder and speculate why and how it happened. I would say I know of one floor employee and one engineer who formerly worked there ( I showed him but he couldnt follow nor grasp the information as the process can be difficult to understand when very small changes occur in process) that knows the core issue.
@@wbfaulk I did. I will say this, it has to do with a few things that are impacted by one flaw so I will list them as all play a part in the issue. The break, the counter bore , the truss rid and relative zero. If anyone has done this type of work they will understand and close inspection of all things mentioned should easily expose what is causing this.
I own a few Gibson guitars but have yet to suffer the horror of a headstock break but I always feel that it could happen any time. Your observation that people who buy classic models of guitars don’t want anything changed is absolutely correct. I’m sure that there are several design changes that the likes of Fender & Gibson would like to make to their more famous instruments but customers can be very resistant to change. Having said that Gibson has just about got away with chambering Les Pauls and Fender with a two point tremolo on some of their Stratocasters. Martin even got around to fitting an adjustable truss rod eventually.
There’s this whole weird currency in comments on UA-cam. For me it’s the next step beyond smashing the Like button. That being said, I do like the idea of having some electronics in the guitar. Piezo pickups sound best if they are seeing a high impedance input, higher than the usual guitar amp. Some kind of preamp or piezo impedance buffer is a must-have.
Is anyone familiar with the tuners on the ES guitar? I work on guitars and have seen, researched, and replaced a lot of tuners but these are new to me. The only keystone tuners with threaded bushings I am familiar with are aftermarket replacements, generally used to give a more vintage look without the risk or hassle of headstock modification. They were definitely not those, as they were branded by the guitar manufacturer as well as having a two-piece bushing and washer. All the aftermarket types I've used have them made into one piece. I would greatly appreciate any info pertaining to the time period and/or styles these were used on. Thanks.
I like the prosthetic headstock parts storage thingy. It was great to see the K&K installation and then hear the audio comparison, even with a less than ideal app.
The only time I use the onboard pickup and preamp on my acoustics in the studio is for a quick and easy guide or scratch track - get the idea down while it's hot and then re-record it later properly with a mic. Live though, I like that it's all onboard, especially as there's a built-in tuner on mine... No pedals required, one cable, job done.
I find the people complain about Gibson are the people who don't own one. I have many guitars and my LP Custom is by far the best guitar I've ever played (thanks to Ted as well!)
Better and better man! “Harley Benson they got him out on the chopper but some important parts of him were left behind in Nam” The insight into pschological manipulation was erudite dude. The second neck break was brutal. Tha Larrivee sounds amazing with that pick up system. Great video. Food for the soul. Thanks.
If you don't want your head stock to break then perhaps some sort of safety device or gadget, like an air bag or a parachute is called for. You might try a double up, belt and suspenders method. Try hollowing the neck out and filling it up with custard. Custard is a non-Newtonian fluid. I'm sure that would work.
I watch your videos because I enjoy watching your work and enjoy your narration. I comment because I want you to know you are appreciated and if it helps you make a buck or two, that's even better.
I probably routed the top, glued the bridge on that L'Arrivee, made the nut and fit the saddle, and corrected the finish (buffing wheel 4 lyf) Great tutorial for installing K&Ks.
Just wondering why you wouldn’t replace the splines that you put in on the first break. Figure you have a good reason not to do it on the second break. Love your expertise and your calm demeanor in your videos. Thanks and keep up the great work. ✌️
Thanks for the life lesson! I own 2 Harley Bentons. One I bought direct from Thomman, the other I bought at a pawn shop because I am a sucker for white single cuts. They are okay, although they seem to have stepped up the quality with their newer models. I don't have any experience with those. I have modded the heck out of both of them. They have good bones, and are great for mod projects. If you want to purchase one I would say go for it, but temper your expectations
Their QC got MUCH better in the last 3 to 4 years. They really stepped up their game which is crazy at that price point. Absolutely love their 335 copy with splittable coils.
Ted, where do you get your syringe applicators? I realise that you use them mostly for glueing, but I like using syringes to apply contact cleaner to potentiometers and switches (it creates less mess and less waste); however, most of the ones I've tried have rubber parts that don't like long term use with the solvents or lubricants in the contact cleaners. Any suggestions?
I’m a sucker for the comment section. Thank you for the good advice in addition to the cool guitar video! Wisdom is scarce these days and you’re giving it away for free! I hope the algorithm rewards you!
I like the K & K's too (as a player), and have even installed them on a Lap Harp and have had good results for noisy bars and pubs. Getting the included adhesive strips are a pain in the booty
Great points about the comments section. I really noticed this on another channel where the host asks you to type in a Y or a N to random questions throughout the video in addition to a "poll" every 30 seconds asking for something like "type G for Gibson or F for Fender". The comment section turns into a bunch of random letters. I don't watch that channel anymore.
You are definitely right about the person who asks or even implies he is looking for a response. I offered an opinion to a guy on a topic because coincidentally I had just watched a video that addressed the very issue he was having. You would have thought I committed a serious crime. The guy totally went off on me. Then it occurred to me that either one he was just being a jerk, or two he was looking to get more comments, or remarks from me. I decided to just stop engaging him because it didn't matter what I said. He was obviously just looking for another post from me, which I supposed made him both.
This video is liked by algorithms all over the world, #1 algorithm comments make the UA-cam great and I recommend this video to the algorithm gods so that they may make us great. Amen
I cant say enough good things about KnK stuff. I have had nearly all of their products. Several versions of some. My first was in 2002. I presently use a Hotspot on my banjo which sounds very real and alive. From the looks of the new package and concise manual Carla and Deiter must still be running things. Great product. Great support. Really good folk. I felt urgently compelled to post this because I was heavily influenced by a superior product and company.
You made this look easy! I fitted these two or three years ago and had a nightmare. I have big hands so always struggle when working through a soundhole. Yhe issue was that the transducers just woudn't stick to the putty. In the end I eyeballed it using a mirror.
If Gibson didn't want to have people have to fix their head stock breaks, they could perhaps build their necks with scarf jointed heads. That would possibly eliminate much of the trouble, in my opinion. I may be wrong but a scarf is at least 3 times stronger than what they do now. Ted, you are a long suffering individual to see this kind of thing repeatedly. My hat's off to you, my friend. Bob in Montana.
I imagine it's much easier to "relish the scars" when you have a great luthier who cares enough about doing quality work to do it even when the customer would likely be happy with less.
I agree with changing to the K&K pickup for acoustic amplification ,,, I find it to be more accurate to the tone of an instrument than Thinline style under saddle pickups ... While many of the latest Fishman and LR Baggs sound amazing plugged in having that thin wafer of material beneath the saddle can rob a small bit of distinctive tone when not plugged in ... My personal favorite pedal to use with the K&K is the Fishman TONE DEQ for both Studio or Live settings ... as always Thanks for sharing ! 🐸

@@roo2127 If you have some knowledge, you should share it.
Take care of it like a normal person and don’t drop it in the floor and it’ll never break. Imagine that!
The Larrivee sounds awesome 👌
I love your wisdom! Great way to explain the psychology behind marketing.
Thanks.
They look like these stock Gibson ones to me:

Thank you
I don't know what I find more impressive, your skills as a luthier or your stunning command of the vernacular.
I like the atmosphere of this videos. The work and artisan orientation. Amazing
"Designed to survive your tender nocturnal embrace",,,, I'm still laughing ! :)
Feels ironic to leave this as a comment, but we really did get into the conversation of life on this one.
14:45 "Not a sponsor"... I should think not, after you said their pickup is "the least offensive option".
I like the prosthetic headstock parts storage thingy.
It was great to see the K&K installation and then hear the audio comparison, even with a less than ideal app.
03:24 woah gotta love that lil Allen key with flamed maple handle
I'm amazed with your luthier knowledge.I enjoy the dry humor also.
Such impeckable ( spelling ) craftsmanship. Thanks..keep it up
Because of your great content I keep coming back. your sincerity has sparked my desire to comment and in some small way help.
Thank you for the time you take to make these video's. Believe it or not you are keeping many Americans sane.
"My hope for you, as a viewer..." Oh man, you got me with that one.
Headstock breaks are my favorite repair to watch, so I hope they never change their headstock design purely for my own selfish reasons.
'Gibsons have to go home early, they have an important meeting in the morning' LMAO!
I find the people complain about Gibson are the people who don't own one. I have many guitars and my LP Custom is by far the best guitar I've ever played (thanks to Ted as well!)
Better and better man!
“Harley Benson they got him out on the chopper but some important parts of him were left behind in Nam”
The insight into pschological manipulation was erudite dude.
Avoiding brittle materials would help. And custard is very non-brittle.
You're meditation on influence was refreshing and very well put
I watch your videos because I enjoy watching your work and enjoy your narration. I comment because I want you to know you are appreciated and if it helps you make a buck or two, that's even better.
I like your idea for the headstock machine-heads holder. Always a good to be organized on parts you remove.
The med ray in those mahogany ribs is incredible. So on the quarter!
Absolutely love their 335 copy with splittable coils.
unbelievably beautiful green Harley benton
I love that little tuner keeper, that’s awesome!
I admire your talent, your mastery of jigs and hand tools, thank you for sharing!
Jokes on you, there's not an enter button on my phone just a little blue arrow thingy
Amen
I love the sound of that acoustic!
Love your videos so much! You always include so many tiny details and things that I appreciate so much thank you!!!
This channel and a cup of coffee is the greatest way to start my day!
The mounting jig for the K&K pickup is a clever idea. It sounds noticeably better than the original pickup.
Lovely finish; "Just a little green, like the color when the spring is born....". Joni Mitchell. Or alternately, " it ain't easy being green!". Kermit
Excellent diversions and superb blather.
Feels pretty good, actually, to be manipulated into leaving a comment. It also feels pretty good to hear (again) a light explanation on how marketing and propaganda trick people into doing things they don't really need to, or should do.
Dear Ted, thank you very much for the wise words starting at 9:23. I was totally taken aback. Certainly felt a bit "caught". For sure, I'll keep this in mind, especially the part about "feeling desperate to comment". Such good advice.
And, yes, I felt desperate to leave a comment just to give this video and your channel a little push. ;-) Thanks again.
I also enjoy your great craftsmanship, the calm diligence, the love of detail. Beautiful.
