    After helping define the sport sedan category, what how does the BMW M3 fit in the segment in 2022? Carlos Lago explores that question in this review of the 2022 BMW M3. We look at the history of the M3 and its modern variants, including the Competition, Competition xDrive, and M4. We also cover the test figures, including 0-60 mph and roll-on acceleration.

    Totally agree on the numbers game. Any performance car nowadays is gonna be fast, gas or electric, but electric is gonna smoke it in the real world. What matters is how the car makes you feel- the experience. That's all I care about anymore. Does it give me a smile? Is it fun and rewarding? That's what really matters.

      Exactly buy what you like, I’m not a fan of electric cars so no go for me no matter how good they are. But more power to those who like them buy it and enjoy it.

      Agree, it’s how it makes you feel, but not sure electric will be faster in anything but a straight line drag race. They’re so much heavier, have limited range, and take ages to charge. They’d definitely lose a rally, or a race on a track that lasted more than, say, an hour.

    The state of this car reminds me of how Cammisa talked about the 991.2 911. A 911 that doesn't have any performance-enhancing options (like rear-wheel steer, adjustable dampers, etc.) ends up being an incredibly satisfying car because it feels more natural and as close to the ethos of the original car as one can get in a modern version. Lap times and raw speed are so overrated compared to getting the driving experience right.

    • @shahaknagiel2845
      @shahaknagiel2845 2 роки тому +8

      Camissa also put out a good video about the history of the M3 -- complements this one nicely, actually -- and has some similar things to say about the purity and fun of older/slower cars (the E30 M3 in that case). And then he get absolutely spanked around the track by Randy Pobst in a G80...good fun.

    I had a 2020 Model 3P. It was fun in the beginning - my first EV and all. It then started to wear on me. Everyone has one it seems. It goes straight great, but that is it. I am not concerned with fuel cost or the environment. If someone does, good for them. I sold it 3 months ago as people are paying insane used car prices for these things, and bought a 2022 M3C. WOW! My drive is now exciting, and taken to a level of fun I could never squeeze out of my Tesla. The sounds, the engagement, the looks. I do not see them everywhere, even in Orange County. I finally enjoy driving again, and love the far better made interior materials, and craftsmanship. Owning the Tesla was like having a mechanical dog, it did a few things great, but without a soul or character, I could not love it.

  • @shahaknagiel2845
    @shahaknagiel2845 2 роки тому +9

    Great and fair overall analysis. For all those complaining about looks or 0-60 times, you're missing the bigger picture of how rapidly this type of vehicle (manual sports sedan) is evaporating from the market, and that we should be thankful BMW still makes it. When we're all driving single-speed EVs in ten years and bragging about -- how quiet the motors are? how good the autonomous mode is? -- I suspect drivers will look back more fondly on the mechanical texture and engagement that comes with a car like this, warts and all. Between the alternatives of a more raw, unrefined Mustang, a lower spec WRX, or a princely yet less practical GT3, the M3 is really the goldilocks in the market. The CT4-BW is likely the closest real competitor, though even it seems a touch smaller and less refined overall, even if the dynamics are top notch.

Price is honestly similar, and even the xDrive can be specced cheaper than the outgoing F8x generation, but if you want those carbon bucket seats or full leather (or the CCBs and exterior carbon pack - neither of those two I personally specced), it does reach over $90k in the US with all the packages checked. But I find that even the outgoing C63S is (or was, since I don’t think mercedes is offering new ones) and similarly specced Audi RS5s are the same. The Guilin QF is depreciating like an absolute boulder, and buying new right now (I hear a nice refresh is coming) you’re buying the tech of what seems to be a 10 year old car.

The new G8x platform demolishes the outgoing QV. Maybe you meant "vehicle character" rather than "capability." Any vehicle with a manual isn't going faster than 3.9 to 60, because the shift to second will always cost it half a second, and there's only so much power a manual transmission car will have anyway. You can spend $40k or $400k, the performance to 60 will top out about the same. Unless you are racing at drags for pinks, you really won't notice any great difference in quarters either

    Let's be real. The first M3 was really the E36 M3; the E30 M3 was unique, which sounds like a compliment, but isn't. It had a raspy, peaky four-cylinder for reasons of homologation which was far less pleasant to actually drive than the smooth, flexible six-cylinder in the 325i, one of which I personally put over 200k miles on. The E36 was a great car, meaning just an all-around great car, and I believe the real attraction of the M3 started there, rather than with the E30, the vast majority of which are now sitting in "collectors'" garages in fear of collecting additional miles.

    • @thekeccles1996
      @thekeccles1996 2 роки тому +3

      M3 originally meant "Motorsport 3-Series" and there's only ever been one generation of that car, the E30. That E30 M3 was only built for homologation reasons (to beat Mercedes in DTM), making it inherently special by default. But when it comes to being a good all-around car, the E30 325i is by far and away the better choice.
      BMW learned that when it came to producing every M3 afterward, making each new M3 a hotted-up, more exciting version of the 3-Series. The M3 has become less of a "Motorsport 3-Series" and more "Fast 3-Series," but that doesn't mean there haven't been some excellent M3s over the years (the E46 especially comes to mind).

    • @thekeccles1996
      @thekeccles1996 2 роки тому +2

      @@GlennC789 Of course it's awful, it's built for racing, not road driving. But it's special both because of its history and its driving experience, even if it's objectively worse on the road compared to other E30s and later M3s.

    I get his argument of appreciating it for what it is, which isn’t something faster than an EV, nor as the best track weapon, but as a great daily driver that’s sporty, BUT it is an $80k+ vehicle. In that sense, it should be fast and good on track. Not the best, but absolutely good enough to put down good times or beat normal vehicles, or else a slow as balls GR86 would be the better car to own, considering it’s under $40k.
    So there has to be some importance to the cars ability to do certain things better than others, considering it’s price tag.

  • @billymania11
    @billymania11 2 роки тому

    The M3 has become a GT cruiser. The ginormous tires keep lap times comparable to the last model but it can't hide the increased size of the vehicle. I cringe watching reviewers flinging the new M3 around the race track. In just a few short years the bushings and suspension bits are gonna give up the ghost because of the increased weight and the car will become loosey goosey. But be that as it may. I'm hanging on to my OG M2.

    EV’s are rarely faster on a track. Too heavy generally. And thats where it matters, thats the everyday driving scale. If its fast around a track, its generally more fun on the everyday twisty normal road.

    This car embodies the modern performance ICEV conundrum. It's slower than an EV in a bench race and on the street. But it's heavier, number and uglier than its predecessors (and even the current regular 3 series). The sport compacts seem more logical to me as they aren't so much subjectively worse than their predecessors, and have performance that's actually accessible on real roads. Just seems like BMW has run out of ideas for performance cars. I'm looking forward to this becoming an EV because then it will at least be something different in a meaningful way.
