- How Led Zeppelin threw this song away is beyond me. Next we break down a classic rock hidden gem Hey Hey What Can I Do which was the B side to the 45 of Immigrant song Written by the world’s biggest rock band Sadly, it never made it onto its intended album, Led Zeppelin 3 or any of the six that followed. And yet it has been hailed as a top-notch tune, living for decades as a holy grail rarity. A status reinforced by the fact that Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham never played it live. It’s a 70s hidden gem for the ages. One that was forgotten to almost everyone aside from avid record collectors and classic rock DJs. Would fans ever get their hands on this incredible track? Find out... NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. So, in the past we featured various versions of a series that we call Hidden Gems. In the past we’ve covered these criminally underplayed songs from the 70s and 80s, focused on different genres, and even featured a bottled lightning hidden gems mash-up. But today, we’re putting a new twist on this old favorite by diving deep into Led Zeppelin’s extensive catalog.
Of course, this monumental band had so many mega-hits in their time that their music has become some of the most instantly recognizable on the planet. I mean, the list of rockers is insanely long. Just try narrowing their hits down to a top 10, best of record. It’s a guaranteed that you’d have enough leftover classic rock staples to fill another couple greatest hits albums. Maybe more.
If you have read any of the top 10, 20, 50 or 75 Zeppelin song lists out there, you know these guys have a wealth of top-tier material... with everyone and their mother arguing which of their landmark songs belong at the summit. After doing some reconnaissance on Spotify, I was not surprised to find Stairway to Heaven at #1 in terms of streams, Immigrant Song at #2, and Whole Lotta Love at #3. Doing a UA-cam search you’ll find a similar cast of characters. Beyond these there are of course so many other Zeppelin favorites, many of which come from
albums I-IV. There are so many perfect songs by this band it’s quite astonishing…
All that being said, for today’s episode we’re going to pull back the curtain a little bit farther and shine some light on a song that deserves to be in more regular rotation in our lives. It’s a bit over looked a bit under appreciated. Hey Hey What Can I DonnnWith two groundbreaking albums under their belt in 1970, Led Zeppelin was the best new thing going in music. But as Robert Plant and Jimmy Page started work on their third record in April, they were in need of a serious breather, far away from the crowds.

Another good one!
Great song!
Great tune!
One of my favourites also
Love that song!
By far, the greatest rock band of all time.
Agreed!
This is my favorite Zeppelin song. Growing up in the 70s & 80s I couldn’t find it. I only would hear it occasionally on the radio. In 1989 I went to college in NYC. On my FIRST evening at College I walked down to Tower Records on 4th and B’Way and FOUND the 45 with this song on the B side. A nearly decade long itch was finally scratched.
There will NEVER EVER be another great band like Led Zeppelin they rule😎, rock on guys
I don't think we even have bands anymore
It is really unearthly how many great songs this band. Their musical diversity is so vast it's like they have a song for everyone, of every kind. It is just impossible to get tired of their timeless music. It always did, does and will sound fantastic. Thank you for doing this video and spreading the love for Led Zeppelin.
While I'm not tired of it I did go through a period in the late 1990s and early 2000s where I had nothing but Zeppelin in my 10 disc car CD changer. I had all the studio albums and The BBC Session (a great 2 disc set of them playing 1970 era Zep live) and then I got How The West Was Won. I listened to nothing but Zeppelin in the car for 2 years. I still love them but don't play them often anymore because I got a little burnt out on it.
I don’t think they ever recorded a bad song.
@@trippmoore I have done the same thing, but when you go back, it sounds even better.
@Sir Norman As a Led Zeppelin fan, I have watched every single one of them.
they sold their soul. There are videos about it ua-cam.com/video/vzQVaPX22tc/v-deo.html
I ABSOLUTELY remember this song! I was a high school student & was a serious student in dance (ballet, tap, jazz, etc since age 4) & it was one of the rock songs that I would sneek & practice my dancing to. I have happy memories of dancing to this! Fun fact: I actually got to see them my last year of HS, at Cobo Arena in Detroit. In one of the WEIRDEST possible ways: it was our Latin teacher (all future pre-med college students were required to take Latin) & she suggested it. She was very old & looked like she had been locked in a time capsel from the 1940s but was actually the hippest teacher at the school. She said to our class: well the school board requires all th "clubs" (Spanish club, French club, German club & Latin club) to have an "event". She said do you want to do th traditional boring thing they ALL do, like sing Christmas caroles up-n-down the Halls at school, followed by a party with the foods traditional to that languages' country; OR do you want to do something cool? We were considered the "NERDS" of the school bcuz of taking Latin (being the ONLY person who actually spoke it was the Pope!) So we all yelled; we wanna do something cool! She then said: ok, you guys translate the title from a Led Zeppelin album into Latin, & I'll arrange for all of us to go see them in concert, (explaining to the school board how Led Zeppelin was Good for Latin club). I kid you not! & she DID. We fund raised money for our tickets, the school provided a bus to transport us there &back. We had EXCELLENT seats & the show was fantastic! So there after when anyone would say: yea Latin is a dead/boring language; I would just smile😊& say: Believe me, it's not boring like you think! & just laugh😉
Loved this story. Teachers touching lives!
Awesome story….that is a helluva memory. I’ll bet your class learned more about Latin - retained it than the others. Your teacher was the perfect example of “never judge a book by its cover!”
Thanks for sharing
Best teacher ever. And at COBO, can't do much better than that.
I think that is the coolest way I have heard of going to a concert.
You rock never stop
Amazing story in the early 1980s my friends and I were massive led zeppelin fans. We knew about this song but it was not available on any available album so it became a mystery and hype. So we heard you could by a 45 with it on it. We drove to record store to record store until we found it - we were so excited and happy when we found
Thank you for covering this, it's my absolute favorite Zeppelin song!!!
Makes you truly wonder about the songs that would have been hailed as classics if their artists released them! Great work man!
There are a bunch of songs out there that would have hit #1 if not for some of these obstacles.
Thanks!
YES! We try covering them on this show!
WMMS, WRQK, and WONE here
Most of them hate their hit songs or the producer tried to stop it. The producer hated Simple Man by Skynyrd and Ronnie nearly beat him up over it and finally turned against him. Cry For The Bad Man was about this producer.
It was a treat when you could catch this on the radio in the 80s...every once in a long while!
I actually found a copy of The New Age of Atlantic at a record store back in the 80s. It's one of my prized possessions! I'm not a record collector, but a huge Led Zeppelin fan. I couldn't believe it. I felt like it was the Holy Grail - the only 12" LP with this fantastic song on it. Love this song!
I bought a copy of that in Germany when it came out. It also had Yes's version of Paul Simon's America, which wasn't available elsewhere. I played that record to death.
In 1987 I was into Death Metal and nothing but. Had a friend who was forcing other music on to me. He said “Hey you want to hear a Led Zeppelin song hardly anyone has heard” I was like OH YEAH. He pulled out a 45 and played Hey Hey What Can I Do. It is still my favorite Zeppelin song. Thank you for making me listen to all music.
As someone born in December 1981, I am 🤯 how you unlocked a memory of this being one of the 1st songs that sticks out that I remember hearing and had completely forgotten about that part of the memory until your story started. I had just always remembered this song from my teenage years washing dishes & listening to Q106FM to pass the time. Thank You for digging a deeper memory out that I had lost for so many years.
Great memories!
Q106. Is that Chattanooga?
@@brookswade5774 Possibly, but I am referring to Lansing.
@@EvaFull Thank you
I was born Dec of '81 too & I have vivid memories of this song & a few other zep tunes. I had a friend who made a mixtape that had a couple from zeppelin, we used to cruise & listened to that tape over & over. The radio stations by us mostly played country.
I love this song.
I never realized it was so rare.
Led Zeppelin's slower, more acoustic songs ie: Ramble On, Going to California, and That's The Way ... are just as good as the heavy metal songs they did, imo.
Classic rock from our younger days....
Awesome !!!!
This song gets so much airplay I never realized it wasn't released on a regular album! But then again, Zeppelin songs have such unusual names I don't know what a lot of them are called!
They’re one of the most creative bands out there.
This is criminal that it took so long for me to hear this song. My brother got me the Led Zeppelin box set for Christmas when it first came out. I was about 14 years old. I fast forwarded the tapes to get to Hey hey what can I do and when I heard it my mouth dropped!!! I could not believe how beautiful the song is. True master piece!!! Still to this day it is one of my favorites ever written.
My sister had the single. For a couple of years after high school, I worked as a weekend DJ at a local radio station, and I borrowed the single from my sister to play on the air during my shows. When I left the station (joined the Navy), I couldn't find the single. Still don't know what happened to it, possibly a fellow DJ took it when he left, I have no actual idea. It did have my sister's initials on it. And, over the next several years after that (late 70's), that single emerged as a rare collector's item, and I was kicking myself for letting it get lost or whatever at that station.
Of course, now it's on CD in the box sets, so the "rare" factor isn't what it once was.
I know the feeling of "losing" records, though thankfully only my own. I brought them to parties because I was the biggest music freak anyone knew. Later with cds, they disappeared around one of my kids, lol.
I’d venture to guess that original vinyl is very much still worth quite a bit. But yes, the reissued box sets made it available for everyone (as it should be).
Buy your sister a copy of Coda to make up for it!
Thanks for this one. This is absolutely one of my favorite Zeppelin songs.
I still have that 45. I received it as a birthday gift in the late 70s from a friend who really knew my taste in music. Thanks for another lesson on a song I know well but didn't know the backstory. My Coda LP does not have this song on it. :)
Me too. I actually framed it and have it in my office.
Ditto......mine is on my studio wall next to Manfred Mann / Dylan's The Mighty Quinn 45.
I just knew Hey Hey What Can I Do was gonna be the focus of this video! One of my absolute favorites from Zep!
Professor, this channel just keeps getting better! Good material from one of the greatest bands!
Much appreciated!
Hey Hey has always been my favorite Zeppelin song. it fully displays all the great aspects of the band and their musicianship
It is a perfect song, for sure.
Immigrant Song is mine.
I grew up hearing “Hey, Hey What Can I Do” on KSHE-95 in Saint Louis and never knew it wasn’t on an LP. It really deserves more praise.
For what it’s worth, KSHE 95 is the oldest rock station in the world, having been founded in 1967 and never changing their format. Their most famous DJ, John Ulett, is the stadium announcer for the Cardinals and his voice is synonymous with the opening of every home game. “Hey Hey…” would have played on KSHE when it was a new single.
How's it going? I have also heard "Hey, Hey What Can I Do" on the radio for decades. (I'm also a long time listener of KSHE) I did not realize for many years that it was never released on any album even though I had all the Zeppelin albums. I just never stopped to think about. One day while hearing the song on the radio I'm thinking
"Hmmmm... what album is this song from?" I decided to do a little investigation and found out that it was never released on any Zep album. I was kind of blown away actually. BTW I'm still a listener of KSHE today. I prefer the KLASSICS HD portion of the KSHE app. Take Care... RIP Ruth Hutchinson.. 🎶 🎸 🎹
WOW! That makes KSHE-FM even older than WMMR 93.3FM (Philadelphia, PA), which started its run on April 29th, 1968 (and their format ALSO remains unchanged)!
Saw Zep in 1975 in STL, Physical Graffiti tour.
@@glennhecker4422 I’m so glad to hear KSHE isn’t the only one. They’ve changed hands a few times but their brand is valuable enough to keep them alive, though it’s pretty corporate now.
They used to claim the world’s oldest DJ, Ruth Hutchinson, who was 87 years old in 1981 and passed away in 1984. She was a good DJ.
must have called Chicago radio stations 100 times in the late 70s early 80s requesting Hey,Hey.
They played it often and i can still sing it word for word til this day. Love it!
*_Hey Hey What Can I Do?_* is THE song that hooked me into recognizing that Zeppelin was my favorite band, and this song is my favorite of theirs' when I heard it on the radio back in 1981-ish.
Thank you for doing this video.
And yes, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin are the ONLY two rock groups that have such diversity in their music that when a radio DJ announces an upcoming song of theirs' . . . you have absolutely no idea of what type of music will be forthcoming. The proverbial - _Box of chocolates._
Well, I think you would also have to add Queen to that list then, in terms of musical diversity and the unpredictability of the nature of their next song release, don't ya think?
Led Zeppelin was my favorite band from high school years, I had all their albums & the Immigrant Song 45 with Hey Hey on the B-Side, I saw Page & Plant on both their tours, on the first Page & Plant tour they played Hey Hey, I still remember Page looking at the crowd to see their reaction as he strummed the first chords, Page & Plant both looked like they really enjoyed playing it. One of my favorite all time concerts, I live in Vancouver BC Canada it was so good the next day I drove 5 hours to the Gorge in Washington State ( East of Seattle ) to see them again!
Everytime I hear any of the songs they played at those 2 concerts it takes me back to that Magical Weekend!
Thanks for the memories Professor
I also saw them play it at The Gorge on May 27, 1995. Great show!
I used to hear this quite frequently on WMMR in Philadelphia. It was frustrating that you could not find a recording though. Led Zeppelin III has always been my favorite by the band. I think it shows the range of their talents. I was always frustrated with folks expecting a band to put out the same album over and over again. It is what plagues the music on the charts today. It is why we all flock to this channel. Loved this one Professor -- great job!
Thank God for MMR!!! Last TRUE radio station around!
"DA DA DA DANT... PHIL-a-delphia." 😄
i can remember hearing this song being played on the radio in the mid 70s every once in a while i loved it but never knew the name of it so i decided to call the radio station and asked them to play street corner girl i thought that was the name of the song so the DJ gave me a bit of an education told me the correct name and that it was only on a 45 and never was on an album i looked and looked to find a copy of it finally i had found a place that special ordered a boot leg copy and managed to finally get a copy i still have it to this day in my collection . it one of there best i think along with Tea for one another one of there songs that was way underrated . im glad i found your channel great work on your documentary thanks
One of Zep's top 10! I was fortunate to grow up in northeast Ohio, where this song somehow got some airplay. I got hooked on it when the 45 came out. Looking back, it amazes me that it never gained greater popularity.
Y103 Youngstown for me!
WSRD and WMMS were my main stations growing up
WMMS!!! Cleveland native here as well. Remember those days very well.
Cincinnati has always played it pretty regularly.
Me too. It sounds like an easy top 10 hit to me!
That was ALWAYS one of my favorite Zeppelin songs. I had the 45 single it was on but no clue now what ever happened to it.
I became a huge Zeppelin fan as a teenager and when their remastered box set debuted around 1990 and I found this song on it it felt like Zeppelin had just released a big hit a decade after their breakup. It was even being played quite a bit on the radio at the time too. Only later did I find out that it was the B side to Immigrant Song. Lol. Zeppelin's "throw aways" would be any other band's gold.
Same here!
Hootie and the blowfish did a great version of Zepps song
As junior high and high school kids, my best friend and I were Zeppelin fans in every sense of the word. (1983-88) When Van Halen toured with Sammy in 85ish they played Black Dog and Rock and Roll. Watching Eddie play Zeppelin was a religious experience. 😂 Nowadays, my favorites are Misty Mountain Hop and Hey Hey. They are truly time capsules to another time.
Well put. I've been saying it for decades.
I found this track 40 years ago and it's been on the top of my Led Zep playlist ever since. One of their absolute best.
I heard that track so many times on the rock radio of my youth. I was never a purchaser of Zeppelin records since they had such a large representation on the radio. So I never knew that this song was NOT on any of their albums. Thank you for this eye opening story of such a masterpiece song being almost lost to time. Great one!
This is a crazy story. I am 37 so I missed all this stuff while it was happening in the 70's and 80's. But I am a classic rock guy. I work at a radio station with a classic rock format, and it is my opinion that Zep is the greatest band of all time. I love all their stuff. "Hey, Hey What Can I Do" is up there as one of my favorites. But I never knew the history behind this song. What a great video!
We covered this song in my band while stationed in Okinawa. We did, both, it and the Immigrant Song. (Back when I could still hit the high notes.) I wish we had video of it but, alas, it's just a fond memory.
Used to play this in college as a DJ. One of my all time zep favs! Great episode
I don't remember hearing this song at the time it was released. It is, indeed, a gem. You referenced Tangerine, which is my favorite Led Zeppelin song. Everybody knows the band but a lot of people are not familiar with this beautiful love song. Thank you, Professor, for another great episode.
Tangerine is one of those songs that makes me think of a specific person every time I hear it. It truly is a beautiful song.
Tangerine is an amazing song indeed.
"Tangerine" was something Page had worked on while with The Yardbirds in 1968. It had completely different lyrics and was called "Knowing that I'm Losing You".
"Hey hey what can I do". Probably the first Zeppelin song i heard. My dad had a cd he burnt with this on it. I used to listen to it when i was little it is one of my favorite songs ever. And still got the cd today.
Good times
Many Robert Plant interview clips have been popping up in my recommendations. I can't seem to skip any of them. Never was a rabid fanatic, but those guys are all just so charming it's hard not to listen when you appreciate their music as I do. They moved the Earth for awhile. If you can get interviews with those guys that would just be phenomenal. The awareness is keen that we will not have them around forever. Those young men are getting old!
Growing up in the 80's, I can remember those rare moments when this would come on the local rock station, as well as Traveling Riverside Blues. It would drive me crazy that I could not find them in the stores!
I was 15 when this released, and it was all over the FM dial. Love Hey Hey. Such a great story song, you nailed it with “the embarrassment of riches.” If this were their 3rd or 4th good song it would have been on the album. But it’s easy to overlook diamonds when you live in a gold mine.
Great idiom there.
Fools gold mine.
First time I saw Zeppelin live, August 8th, 1969 in San Bernardino. Driving home that night, I knew I had witnessed rock history. I saw several more times before Bonham passed in 1980. “Hey, Hey, What Can I Do” is definitely one of my top 5 favorite songs by Zeppelin. I saw Plant & Page in 1995 in San Diego, pretty sure they played the song that evening. Thanks for your video & bringing back all my memories of my teenage years.
Riverside Blues should have been released too. Great episode, Prof! BTW, anyone that plays bass guitar should try the Immigrant song... wicked difficult lines.
I remember "Hey Hey What Can I Do." Had that track on many of my chillout cassette tapes for long road trips. And I totally loved Zep III. I was a fan of the previous two, but 3 kinda sealed the deal for me. Thanks!
I knew instantly which song and group this episode was going to cover. I remember if anyone had this single it was completely bragging rights because it was so rare to have. My theory is that it was a Zep gem that would make other zeppelin fans jealous that you had it, which I didn't, lol. I was always to young to see them live until the In Through the Out Door when I finally could and saved my money to get tickets but sadly this is the tour John Bonham passed and it was canceled and zeppelin was disbanded. I envy anyone that saw them live but I have seen Plant/Page every time they toured. Great episode professor, more Led Zeppelin!! Lol
Same here! As soon as I saw the photo I knew that was the one and only, the great, Robert Plant. A bonafide genius and such an underappreciated gem too! I wish you could have seen them earlier than In Through the Out Door! John Bonham was a phenomenal musician.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I know right! My city was listed on the tour dates and I had a friend's older sister willing to take us but instead we got the terrible news. Anyway at least I can still enjoy their music with the push of a button today
Guessing from the description of yourself you must be 60 this year. I did have the single, but..... I left it on the back seat in my car and came back to find a warped vinyl disc that just kept getting more misshaped the more i tried to save it.

Love the lyrics ! Cool love rock song about chasing a girl - the drums , the vocals , and the guitars - unique Zeppelin signatures - make it a unique gem in their music catalogue
It should have been much bigger than it was. Such a cool song indeed.
It was about his woman being a whore. It's not really a love song.
Had a great FM rock station near me growing up. Was exposted to this song early and often. Great stuff.
I grew up in CT. This song actually got decent play time on the Classic Rock radio stations. It is still one of my favorite songs.
Hey Professor! Big fan of the channel here. Best content on youtube, IMHO.
I was born in 1975 and raised on Led Zeppelin and other classic rock (the best gift my mom ever gave me). My uncle gave me that complete box set for Christmas in 1993. I of course already knew most of the songs but being a kid with no money I didn't own the cds, so it was a fantastic gift. When listening on shuffle, I came across Hey Hey What Can I Do. I already knew the whole song, so my mom or my aunt or uncle must have had it and played it often when I was very young and I totally forgot about it. What a cool feeling to rediscover such an amazing track! 😎🤘🤘🤘
52 years old Zeppelin always will be my favorite band. First heard this in 1989 on the radio. I had what i thought every album or cassette. I was completely blown away with this and travelin riverside blues. And most recently the song The girl i love she's got long black wavy hair. My god. Doesn't get any better. Greatest of all time in my book.
Great song from the greatest rock n roll band ever I played Led Zeppelin to my three kids since they were in the crib and my young son once talking to a grown man about them and listing many of their songs the guy said to him "your mama brought you up right".
I think those of us that bought LPs back in the day heard every song. Long lost discipline. People that just download greatest hits may miss some great songs. I love this one still.
Achilles last Stand is another of theirs that is criminally underplayed and underrated
I remember when zep 3 came out , it had people scratching their heads , immigrant song was played hundreds of times a day on the radio, my favorite on the album was out on the tiles, when I first heard hey hey what can I do , I went through my zep albums thinking how'd I miss this great song, another song that got hidden was traveling riverside blues , another great hidden song by one of the greatest rock bands in history
Traveling Riverside Blues is another gem for sure!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Yes!
Traveling riverside blues is one of their best imo for sure.
Thanks, you did a great job . 👍🙏😊 Presenting the history behind this iconic song.
I remember specifically seeing out this 45 in the 80s at a used record store. So proud to own and so sad when I had to sell most of my record collection about 5 years ago. LOVE this song. Although it was played on local radio, I didn't know it was never played live.
I've been a Zeppelin fan my whole life (I'm 54) and was lucky enough to see them with my parents at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1972.
I reckon their most under rated album was In Through the Out Door, which was recorded at ABBAs studio in Stockholm in 1979. JPG had just spent a fortune on a Yamaha GTX1 3 level synth, and used it to full effect on the album, which arguably kicked off the synth pop/new wave genre.
Carouselorama, a 10 minute long epic song is a work of art, and worthy of your analysis.
live version of "no quarter" from "the song remains the same" is mesmerizing ,its hard to call any zeppelin tune favorite cuz there all spectacularly magnificent in their own way

Man one of my favorites never new this .How Cool .
Another great episode Adam. This has always been one of my favorite hidden gems. I think I love it so much exactly because it doesn't fit into any of the Led Zeppelin molds. I recall hearing this song when a radio station in the Hartford/Boston area played the B-side when I was in high school and heavy into rock radio. The song stuck in my mind and I knew it wasn't available (in general). This is a case where the world of streaming gave me easy access to this song that stuck in my mind for 40+ years. I think the acoustic vibe, the mercurial Robert Plant oscillating vocals between soft and scorching, and the simple but delightful instrumentation. Jimmy certainly knew how to make all 12-strings ring with the sound of perfection. As of today, this is one of my most listened to songs in my "sing along" play lists.
You're exactly right.
Another great video on Zep Professor! Growing up in San Diego, our classic rock station KGB 101.5 FM was playing this song since day 1 and I've always loved it. Other Zep hidden gems are "Ten Years Gone," "In The Light", "That's The Way", "Tangerine." Keep em Zep vids comin' Prof!
One of my favorite songs ever.
The best band in rock history. I knew this song, but not that it's so rare. Great video. Thank you Professor.
There is an actual video for this Song that was made- by whom I know not.
Man, this has always been my favorite zeppelin song. They always played this on the radio when I was a kid, but could never find it on an album.
It's not underplayed up here in Canada. It's been on the radio ever since I can remember. I don't even consider it soft rock. To me it's one of the top songs.
That's cool!
Good for you, Robin!
I agree with Robin, I was born in Montreal and CHOM fm played it all the time. I moved from Montreal some years ago but I also heard it many times on CHEZ fm from Ottawa
"Hey, Hey..." was a staple of rock radio when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s on the US east coast. I've always loved it, and had no idea it was a single B side.
It’s always had plenty of radio airplay in the SF Bay Area also. From the moment I heard from a DJ that it wasn’t on an album I always made a point to focus on it whenever it came on the radio because I knew I couldn’t just listen whenever I wanted. I’ve always been album oriented. I never bought a physical single in my life. I finally did start filling in gaps in my collection by buying songs on iTunes about six years ago. This song was one of the first that I bought.
Fair comment/observation. 👍🏻
I was 28 during 2008, and I was introduced to "Hey Hey What Can I Do" through a borrowed copy of a four-volume Zeppelin compilation. Through my lack of knowledge of their albums, I did not know it was a rarity. Earlier in 2022 when I explored their albums recorded before John Bonham's death, I was a little bit blindsided to discover it wasn't among them. I looked back and discovered it was the B-side to "Immigrant Song". It definitely had its place on *Zeppelin III.*
I'll tell you who I would like to hear an interview with, if you get the chance, Adam. I'd like you to interview JPJ. Despite the fact that Jimmy and Robert are the ones most easily lauded when it comes to Zeppelin's body of work, I think JPJ was the most innately musical out of the four.
Love Zeppelin! I could never choose a favorite song. I am partial to Zep III just a bit more than the rest. I've been blown away by so many songs in my 65 years. I love rock, blues, R&B, singer/songwriter, progressive jazz and alternative. I have a nearly full 300 cd player.
By the 80s, the Immigrant Song 45 was reissued so I was lucky enough to have it.
When I was 20 and in the service, I dated a woman who did cheat on me and I later learned she had worked street corners years before that; and our last weekend together, we attended church on Sunday, so it seemed like that song captured my personal situation. And even though I don’t ever think about that girl (hell, I don’t even remember her name right now), Hey Hey What Can I Do always brings back that memory, if only for a fleeting moment.
Amazing! Sometimes in life there is always that gal or guy we wished we could get but for some reason couldn’t.
My friend had a reissue of Immigrant song, and the b side was celebration day.
The first time I heard this song was when I purchased the 1988 box set. The song blew me away then, and has always been my favorite Led Zeppelin song. It's nice to see it finally get recognized for the truly awesome song that it is.
when a song of this quality doesn’t make an album goes to show how mighty they were 😵💫
Man this is one of those songs I could listen to over and over again. Just love it
Great episode today, professor. This song's story can be classified as the ultimate hidden gem. Normally, when you think of hidden gems, it's either a song from an album which was never released as a single or a song that was released as a single but didn't go very high on the charts. This song was neither. For Led Zeppelin fans, unless they bought The Immigrant Song on 45, they were probably unfamiliar with it. I only discovered the song a few years ago and thought it was great. During that time-frame of the early 70s, I definitely could see that song becoming a big hit had it been released as a single.
I had the 45 in high school.
As soon as you said 'B side', I knew what it was. My favorite Zep song. Thanks for covering it.
Correction to the Professor Of Rock. The song was officially released on the first Led Zeppelin box set in 1990 (not 1993). This song along with Travelling Riverside Blues were equally the rage when they were both heard by most Zep fans for the first time then. I should know as I was one of them. I purchased this right away in my first year of college and those two tracks in particular I couldn't stop listening to
Actually it was released in the 70s on a 45 under Atlantic before they started Swan Song label. It wasn't released on an album until, I think it was the CODA album, that 45 is ultra rare. I know because I had that 45 in the 70s and sold it. Big mistake.
Correction it was not CODA hey hey was on, it was the box set, my bad
Also released as a cassette single in the early 90s
Traveling Riverside Blues is a great song. I think they left that one off because the lyrics are largely the same as The Lemon Song. Love the guitar on that one.
Traveling Riverside Blues. Great song, not on the original early albums when it was made.
Back in the 70s when I was collecting every Zeppelin album(8-track} they produced, I would hear this track on the radio. I wondered🤔
why this awesome song did not exist amongst my repertoire of Zeppelin music? With no "internet" to research this seemingly faux pas, I
would just have to ponder this mystery for a lifetime. Love this tune, thanks for highlighting this tune.👍🏼
As someone who grew up in that Era, I'd always assumed it was a censorship thing. You just didn't sing about 'balling' people back then--at least on the radio. It was shocking enough when Robert sang about lemons!
In my humble opinion "Tea for One" off Presence is another overlooked Zeppelin classic.
This album is a perfect example of the characteristic that has always made me love this band...their versatility.
Starting off with Immigrant song showing their hard rock side. Their bluesy side shows prominently with Since I've Been Loving You. But the acoustic songs on this album really stand out and reflect their time at Bon-Yr-Aur, Tangerine, That's the Way, Friends (a song with a certain feel to it that captivates me). Then the songs that defy categorization, Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp, Gallows Pole, Hats Off to Harper (admittedly my least favorite Zeppelin song). Overall an outstanding album.
So much diversity!!!
You forgot to mention that my old band used to cover Hey Hey, lol. And my pick for the most under appreciated Zep song is Wanton Song, which, next to Achilles, is Bonham’s most ferocious drumming and I’ve never once heard played on the radio.
Love Achilles and Wanton
Great song! I actually love Zeppelin's acoustic songs far better than their rock songs. Ramble on, Thank you.. All beautiful masterpieces!
When I was a teenager I added it onto my CODA cassette. There was just enough blank space at the end of one of the sides to fit it. My parents had a turntable that could record to cassette. I used scotch tape over the hole where the plastic tab is on blank tapes to trick the mechanism that won’t let you record onto commercial recordings. When they put it on the reissue of CODA I felt like a visionary.
One of the things I liked about this album is that the group aimed to recognize the UK's folk music history by including "Gallow's Pole," which is actually a very old folk song. Led Zepplin worked references to UK folk and myth traditions in the third and fourth albums. I was an english teacher, so I guess I appreciate their work in that way.
without even hearing this song I know exactly what song this is, flip side to the" immigrant song" single.
That's my "zeppelin" trivia question to the people that know music trivia. Only one person has ever gotten that correct in 15 years of asking . Great topic as always.
This band will always be the best ever...Theres not a song they did that could be considered just 'ok'....Im so glad to have been able to grow up in that era and bliss out to their complete perfection when it comes to the best of rock n roll ! ! !
They were the best!
@Blue Forest
Right?
I slipped into the zep vortex fifty two years ago, I don't ever wanna find my way back ✌
If you listen to entire catalog you will have a few songs you will pass on but for the most part they are a really good band. Even Plants solo stuff was pretty good.
Thank you, Professor! Why it got to be such a gem on FM radio despite being so rare is beyond me. Not putting it down as it would be on my Top 10 list. I'm guessing it has to do with the adage "We all want what we cannot have!"
👆Hey you won a prize 🎁🎁🎁
Hey Hey What Can I Do is a ZEPPELIN classic, it really shows the bands versatility and what could have been if BONZO didn't pass, RIP John. One ZEPPELIN classic that didn't make it onto an album and I don't think they played it live either is Traveling Riverside Blues. That would be another grate hidden gem show. Thanks for what you do for the historic record of RocknRoll. Peace be safe.
😎✌️
One of my favourites and easily among their best songs. Thanks for this!
Been the world's biggest Zepp fan since my brother brought home LZ II in 1969. Friends introduced me to Hey Hey in the early 1980's. I immediately understood why it wasn't released... Not enough room left on the amazing LZ III ... and LZ IV was a different theme. LZ have SO many DIFFERENT and AMAZING sounds to them! #1 Band of ALL TIME!
They could have binned Hats Off To Harper. The only Zeppelin song I dislike.
@lyndoncmp5751 I agree I didn't care for that, seem like filler material!!!
Thanks Mr. Professor! I remember the first time hearing this song. It was on the radio, in 1987. I was in the Air Force, and worked in the office of an automotive shop. I walked out of the office one day, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear that song blasting from a boom box!
"Encomium" is one of the best tribute albums ever! Right up there with "Stone Free" and "If I Were A Carpenter".
Yup!
Thanks for the recommendation(s). I'm gonna check 'em all out!
Tribute to The Doors.. "Stoned Immaculate " is pretty good also..
*"Boogie with Stu"* is an under-played favorite of mine.
I remember buying this song by purchasing the Japanese import. I had to go to New York City. (Luckily, it was just a train ride for me.) Went to some store in Greenwich Village that sold bootlegs, and got the Japanese import with that picture of Plant, Page, Bonham, and Jones on the cover, along with some writing in Japanese that I didn’t understand. But this rare purchase put me in the elite-that rare group who had the luxury of being able to put this 45 on the turntable and listen to this gem whenever I wanted. I did so often. And it always put a broad smile on my face.
Konichiwa!
Do you remember how horrible the translation for Immigrant Song was? "Our only goal is to reach a rest, and show".
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I too went to lengths to get this track, only to be easily purchased via the box set years later.
I also bought it on the Japanese 45, but made my purchase while on liberty from my US Navy ship in Japan.
Yeah man, as a teen, I bought some boots @ a place called Bleaker Street Jazz... thanks for the memories!
I think "ball" was old-time blues slang for getting drunk, as in "having a ball", but the double entendre certainly adds to the fun. Sex may well be the primary meaning here, since he also says she wants to stay drunk all the time. I taped this off the radio back when it was new, enjoyed listening to it many times.
