  • So, I realized after I edited this that I got Kat's question slightly wrong in the video, but I honestly don't have time to re-film and re-edit this video and I still think I made some good points, so I'm leaving this up. Hope you all enjoy!

      Mazza Munchkin Actually, thank you a lot for saying that. There are definitely people out there who don't get that lol, so it's encouraging that you do. I'm probably going to do a lot more that's not related to Tourette's here (not that the education about Tourette's will stop because that's incredibly important, it's just never been everything I want to do on UA-cam).

    I have Tourettes and really bad OCD. I was researching other people's tics and experiences and came across this channel, now I'm a subscriber.
    And you're really cute by the way

    I'm so happy you made a playlist for us to be able to educate ourselves.
    You really didn't have to do that.

    Hi Julissa my name is John, I stumbled upon you and some others that have Tourette syndrome related UA-cam channels. I myself have Tourette syndrome with ADHD and some of the other little things. Just want to say thank you for being part of the creation of a small community, it really does mean a lot and it is very encouraging so keep up the good work. also this was a very good video. don't be afraid to share your political opinions. you're always going to have people who disagree ,you're always going to have haters so just ignore the haters and have good discussions with the people who politely disagree.

    Also I agree that you can't understand other people's realities so it would make sense full intersectionality could be conflicted.

    Definitely agree with you - and that's kind of what makes the world an interesting place, I feel like. If we all knew exactly what everyone else in all dimensions was going through, it would be a little boring! The diversity in culture, life experiences, etc, makes us all the unique individuals we are - that's not to say we shouldn't try to understand what someone else is going through or at least be understanding of that person, but it does mean there's no way we can actually, physically experience the things that person has dealt with. Thanks for the thoughts!

    Please continue to think about deep things. That just means you're going beyond your Tourette's and delineating your individuality as a person. I happen to like philosophy and deep things too, it makes me satisfied to delve in the deep. Superficial people tend to irritate me.

    Really thoughtful dialogue. I know these kinds of conversations can be challenging because people don't always respect the complexity and sensitivity of some of these subjects. I wish I had time to sit down and hash out all of my thoughts on topics like this--maybe I'll swing back by this video when I have a little time! I did want to encourage you that I think you're doing a great job of communicating your thoughts with kindness and respect. You have a wonderfully genuine and kind disposition that I think could help put people at ease. So don't be afraid to enter the conversation! :)

    I have no idea how I found this video but I am so thrilled to see a burgeoning philosopher that I subscribed just as a show of support. It's such a rewarding (though often thankless) pursuit. Most aren't made for it. But if you are then go go go and keep going.

      Hi! I don't have Tourette's but an ex of mine does. At the time, most of his tics were motor and his vocal tic was mostly along the lines of snorting and breath holding. He had face scrunching and widening, which can be surprising at first, but most people stop noticing. He did have a tic where he kicks backwards, and he's a foot taller than me...I have disabilities myself that affect vision and mobility...I learned not to walk behind him lol. He did tic while driving, but I trust that man with my life. I could see me worrying if he dealt with coprolalia or copropraxia, but I could get over it. After all, I get stared at enough on my own!

    • @snappleandcats8045
      @snappleandcats8045  7 років тому +1

      Calvin Knaide It's probably more controversial than you realize. I'm guessing that there are a lot of people who disagree with the definition I use of intersectionality or disagree with me about how much knowledge someone needs to talk about something. A lot of more conservatives I know have problems with intersectionality in general. And I guess all those different perspectives are cool with me. I just didn't want the controversy to get in the way of discussion, which it seems like it hasn't yet :)

    A couple helpful thoughts to consider-
    1. Relegating people down into groups is regressive by nature. Martin Luther King said it right in his "I Have a Dream" speech- the most moral and progressive thing one can do is to judge another based upon the content of their character, and nothing else.
    This is where I, like a lot of people, take issue with "intersectionality" and so called "Social Justice". Intersectionality defines people by the particular groups they belong to and where they intersect. It takes the focus off of the individual, and rather describes you based upon the combination of groups you belong to (some of which are not necessarily of your choice). Just because someone is a "white" straight female, or a "minority" male, does not and can not describe who that person is. To say that the combination of group(s) you belong to even begins to describe who you are is really no different than the racist stereotypes that are evil and wrong (because there is so much more to you than these labels!). This thought process of grouping is antithetical and a direct contradiction to MLK's vision of the future.
    Why does everything have to come down to race, religion, orientation, or whatever class a person belongs to? How about people just focus on being decent human beings to each other? If everyone in the world did that, God's promise of Heaven on Earth would be that much closer.
    2. To say that you cannot comment or have an opinion on something merely because you have not experienced it is not necessarily true. For instance, I have never had cancer, but I can have a valid opinion that I wouldn't want to have it. I haven't jumped in a pond with a bunch of alligators either- pretty sure I don't need to do that in order to have an opinion on cuddling with gators.
    We should all have our own opinions (which is a byproduct of thinking!), but we must also be willing and able to change them when presented with reason and evidence. Unfortunately too many people fail at both of these.

    • @snappleandcats8045
      @snappleandcats8045  7 років тому +1

      JustaGuyNamedB On your first point, I actually don't have as many disagreements with you as you would think (I have no idea what others would say, I don't speak for anyone else). My entire point whenever I personally speak about being a disabled woman with Tourette's in public is that I DON'T want to be judged solely by these things because I am judged by these things. On a daily basis. I don't mean to say they're all of who I am, but saying these don't drastically impact my every day life would be incredibly dishonest.

    • @snappleandcats8045
      @snappleandcats8045  7 років тому +2

      As for your second point, I don't entirely disagree with you there either. I just think there's a balance there. Frankly, I think we all automatically develop opinions about something when we first hear about it even if we don't know anything about it, whether we like it or not. All I'm really saying is, if you don't experience the problem (or actually, even if you do), do a lot of research before spouting your opinion about it and be willing to change it. You have no idea how many people confidently talk about Tourette's like it's a swearing disease because they don't know anything about it.

    That's considerate and thinking ahead- and wise. This is not to bait you BUT I have a feeling that of the folks following your channel, most are younger and ITCHING to hear what you have to speak to the issues of homosexuality, transgenderism and the like. The media has so put it in the forefront of this generation and young people who have been drawn into these lifestyles are looking for affirmation. Depending upon your positions, you stand to potentially....."tic" off a lot of people.........

      Glenn Porter Well, if I HAD to choose a political "box", I think I'd mostly be libertarian, however, I disagree with most libertarians a lot at the same time. Some of my views are really right leaning, some are very left leaning, some things I'm not educated enough to have an opinion on yet. I'm just all over the place. If I were to just say all my views somehow, I'd probably upset and/or disagree with someone in every political position lol.
