While I was at NBC doing live coverage we had so many people working with us that it makes it easy to just sit there and watch while calling it live but someone is always close by to help you if you ever needed something during the race. But doing a Q&A would be doable 🤔🦋👊
I'm 🤞all the major players stay upright. This way we get to see a true head to head race. The fact that Jonas team this year is not leaps & bounds better should make the race more exciting no doubt. My other hope is UAE or Tadej watch your show & remember to bring enough Coca-cola's & Snicker Bars so he doesn't bonk..... 👍🏻🚵♀️💯🇨🇵
On the money! If Jonas will win it’s because he is the most consistent. You cannot make a mistake against him! And everyone else has been known to make those mistakes. But I still have him off the podium, crazy I know. I just think his injury is gonna impact him more than people think.
Primož tactics: following Pogačar in first half of TDF then Pogi will start to fade and Jonas form will start getting better at the end, so in second half of TDF just try to follow Jonas, who will have time defecit from beginning of TDF as his form will not be 100%
I dont get your criticism of Hindley and Vlasov. In last years Tour Hindley came 7th, but he lost the podium only after he crashed. This year, he came 3rd in the only WT stage race he was Captain (Tirreno). And Vlasov already Top 5ed the Tour and was also in the Top 6 of every stagerace he rode this year, even as support for Roglic (Paris-Nice and Dauphine). So I would strongly disagree: Both have shown, that they can up there until the big 4 will battle it out.
All true and factual, but nowadays most people just believe what they want for no good reason at all and facts just get in the way of their preferred non factual insanity.
I still wonder whether Rog might have won the 2020 TDF if he had not crashed so hard in the Criterium du Dauphine a couple weeks earlier. I think that crash kept him from being in top form at the Tour. Great analysis, as always, Chris.
Well if that's the case, the crash at the Dauphine this year is worrying. It looked like it was impeding his performance in the mountain stages, especially stage 8 but even 6 and 7; at his best he could've easily dropped everyone there long before the finish.
This year I'm divided. I like both slovenians, hope one of them wins. I don't really see Remco fighting even for the podium. Last 3 days are super tough, would be nice to get there with 2-3 riders figthing for the yellow.
Could you also cover some of the minor teams and riders? For example the Yates brothers, Gall, Bilbao, ... They have chances for a podium or a Top 5 and therefore might also influence the race. Despite not being the biggest (your GC-Top 4) names.
TdF win advice for the top contenders. Roglič: Solve 6 obstacles. Tadej: Ride smart, attack when it's possible. Jonas: Show the world you are the strongest!
Not quite. Jonas: show the world you have excellent recovery physiology. He doesn't have to be strongest, just the best at high altitude and good enough at time trials and punchy finishes where bonus times are up for grabs
I don’t understand based on which results is Remco a favourite. Apart from Vuelta win, he had significantly more losses than wins in all stage races but particularly in Grand Tours.🤔
With a formidable line up of competition heading to TDF Primoz has to avoid crashing. Him staying safely atop his saddle does not guarantee the win but would help him increase his chances.
In conclusion as much we like to see roglic winning he got no chances, he doesnt have the legs and the team to at least keep with pogacar, hope im wrong but how times kuss saved him its a conerning sign
I dig our Slovenien man Tadej: whether he wins or not, he no doubt owns the style. Of all the grand contenders, our man from Slovenia has the panache, the flair & the cool factor not only to win , but to win in style. That we haven't seen since I don't know when. Gearing up for Le Grand Départ for Le Tour de France, it's time to pick our favorites. I'm going with Tadej in jaune, the boring Dane second, & Remco third, for what it's worth. Above all, because of his form this spring & his positive disposition, I'm going with Pojacar to take it all in style & finish en jaune.
Sums up Primos Roglic pretty well I’d say. Like I’ve said before my almost complete lack of experience and my near total ignorance of cycling tactics makes me certain there is at least a 50% chance a Slovenian will win this year’s Tour de France.
Loved your discussion of the last point. Wonder who will have the race intelligence and legs to solve the tactics of four titans and two superteams, has there ever been anything like it? Don't see Roglic winning the last time trial outright, but maybe he can stay close enough if he's in yellow. Hope I'm wrong, the other three will get their chances in the future.
In hte Vuelta, I think Jonus did attack his Team Leader and took about half a minute or more. Sepp was stuck behind and lost time through tactics. I think that's what got Rog is that Jonus was allowed to go up the road
You've talked this week about how sprinters aren't treated well by the richer teams. Please, in the remaining five days we've got, give us your opinion as to the chances of Cavendish to get that record of total TdF stage wins. Go back and look at how perfect his old-school teammate of Morkov and their former Quickstep trainer from that four-win TdF a few years back helped the Manx Missile win earlier this month in the Tour of Hungary's Stage 2, to become the male cyclist with the most sprint wins in their career (164).
With big teams not taking sprinters, Cav has a chance but he'll have to stay healthy and high altitude efforts might affect him more now he is both older and has remains of Epstein Barr in his system. The older we get, the slower we recover. Can he recover from mountain stages enough to sprint like he used to? Will he be desperate and push too hard ending up in a bad crash in the last km? He also has old team support who may not recover like they used to. The team car will be a long way back so getting water bottles will take more effort than for teams with a leader in GC.
I think Bora will be fine, weaker than UAE but on the same level as Visma i guess. But I dont think Primoz is strong enough to beat Pog and Jonas (if he is at 100).
I would say the only bad tactic from Jonas would be pulling for pogi on the tormulant stage last year which lead to him getting attacked and dropped but other than that yeah he is pretty good tactically
Any idea why Soudal Quickstep wouldn't bring Kasper Asgreen to the tour? He sounded really disappointed and not very happy when announcing it yesterday.
Like last year, he's a weapon for Pog. He goes, the others have to chase. Pog goes, the others have to chase. The really interesting bet would be UAE getting all three podium steps and all the jerseys
@@cuebj They could get 3 of the 4 jerseys; but the points competition is so heavily weighted towards flat stages, I don't see them pulling green off. No pure sprinters and nobody like WVA on their squad
@@johnhardwicke7285 Not sure what that has to do with anything; I'm not the one saying that he will/could win. Adam could podium; he won't win any jerseys and won't win overall. But it's plausible that Pog wins and takes polka dots, and that Ayuso takes white, which would give them 3 of the 4 jerseys. If Roglic crashes hard and Jonas is far off his best, one could see UAE sweeping the podium but it's far fetched.
Bora wants some flat power help to keep Roglic at the front during the dangerous flat stages. Haller and Denz and then Danny for some position when it gets really tuff. 🤔🦋💪
great post Chris.. I see Jorgensonn as 4 not Remco...I dont think he is quite in the same condition as Jonas and TP...BTW Evanepoel not a serious contender.
I was interested to see that you mentioned Primos's crash near a stage finish when he went from left to right and tried to cut into the grourp of 3 lead by Mads and then crash. He blaimed the others while I always thought it was his fault and a bad decision on his part, something I think he shows too often. Why was he back in the pack on the Tour where he hit a hay bale he didn't see coming. Probably wouldn't have happened if he had been near the front or was paying attention. I know he is very good, but I question his inconsistencies and how he seems to beat himself - witness when he crashed 3 times on the last stage of Paris Nice and choked on the Tour ITT against Tadej. I doubt he'll win this year.
TT as the final stage always stresses me out. 😩 Recipe for disaster and heart break. Imagine losing by a sec after 3 weeks of racing, I'd burn the world to the ground! 😅
I think there's 3 main one's, Remco, I just don't see him at the level of the others, now I've said that, he'll go on and win 🤣Roglic is an amazing natural athlete, but he doesn't have a cycling brain, he'll crash, that's a guarantee, but as long as he only crashes 3 times everyday, he might have a chance. In these races, it's so hard to predict, man for man Pogi, I think edges anyone, but illness, an off day, anything can mar that and then it's a dice throw.
Hry chris. Is there a question about the team that always leads the peloton in the yellow jersey? My friend told me yellow jersey team always lead a peleton, and i said they are not always lead peleton based on the team status they sometimes lead or not. But he said it is not true. So i was curious what is true. 😂
It depends on the team's objectives whether they lake control or let others. Your friend is both right and wrong! For instance, on a flat stage you'd expect the sprinters' teams to take control to ensure a bunch gallop at the end.
One would think that if Roglic has a history of being in crashes a lot (which he does), why would he not TRAIN for this? I know plenty of non-pros who were crash-prone and then spent time working on this (like every other skill one could work on as a cyclist...cornering, descending, climbing, sprinting, etc). It seems strange that this has not been a priority to get figured out for this rider! TOTALLY agree about tactical riding. It's Jonas 100%. And he has a poker face when he races, unlike riders like Remco who wears his feelings on his bike jersey. Also sorry but Remco has NO chance! He can't climb well enough. I am hoping Jorgensen is still on form because I think he could podium!
Not so much that Remco can't climb as he can't function so well at high altitude, meaning he can't climb at high altitude. climbs at low altitude don't seem to be a problem for him
The best studio race coverage would have been Bob Roll, Chris Horner and Christian Vande Velde ala 2 years ago. But NBC Sports has the race coverage wrong.
@ChrisHornerCycling You keep giving an example from last year's Giro (the photo you posted is from stage 16) as his bad moment. That's blatantly false, because he was riding injured at that moment - riding with a 5 cm hole in his thigh after a crash in stage 11 (also not his fault). That's not a bad moment, that's riding within your limitations. You also gave the last stage from this year's Dauphine as an example of his bad moment - also riding injured from 2 crashes. I'm not saying he doesn't have bad moments, you're just giving wrong examples...
The fact of the matter is Primoz, Sepp and Remco are down below Tadej’s level… only a fit Jonas can try, however, the past 2 TDFs has been Visma vs Tadej. This year Tadej has a stronger team to support him
I don't remember a grand tour where Roglic has not crashed, usually multiple times. I would love to see him win, but this year I see him just as crash prone as usual.
Froome was called "Crash Froome" at the start of his career. He even crashed into an official standing right in front of him, think he thought the man would move, but he should have when to one side - must be in 2010
As a caveat, i don't figure Remco in the mix. So if we say we agree on top three i think athlete wise Tadej is the sharpest at this moment followed by Primoz then Jonas. Team wise, I think Bora is good, UAE better and Visma best with Wout and Sepp (good enough to get a not 100% Jonas to the win in Nice). I think Jonas will get better but he does not seem confident and funny enough, I think he was swayed by his responsibility to the team/teammates to join the race. Given that last statement, if Primoz had stayed at Visma, and Jonas bowed out of '24 (even his DS said he is still shook by the crash), Primoz would have this alread won (yeah, if he holds onto his handlebars😂 and made up to Sepp)
I'm really nervous about the first few days of racing with a huge peloton, everyone wanting to ride near the front, riders from curb to curb... please no Allez Omi Opa this year.
JV supported SK at the 2023 Vuelta in the media, and then went after him on the road... and that makes it hard for me to support him. For contrast, consider Froome and Wiggins at the Vuelta and TdF... Roglic has a good chance to come out of the blocks fast... but the 3rd week is always going to be tough for him...
Yes Roglic doesn’t win the Giro in 2023 without Sepp Kuss. Vingegaard was not exactly a choir boy either. He attacked Sepp the day before taking back a minute and he went up the road on the Angliru with Roglic rather than pulling Sepp up to the summit.
Roglic couldn’t beat Pogacar in 2020, and it seems like Roglic’ form hasn’t gotten much better/maybe it’s gotten worse. While Pogacar seems to have gotten better. So I think it will take a bit of luck for Roglic to win the Tour.
I guarantee you that Roglic's biggest obstacles will be the ladies. He's so handsome, he's going to have to fend off the ladies after the finish of every stage.
I'm a huge Roglic fan. I love his riding style, his mindset, and he seems like a generally good dude of character. Idk if he can beat Tadej and Jonas, but I bet he thinks so. I'm rooting for him.
Id also like to add that "No Sepp Kuss" is everyone's problem but Jumbo, not just Roglic.
Chris : n0 1, don't crash!!
Roglic : Hold my beer!!
I wouldn't bet money on him, but I want him to win more than anyone else in this race.

I don't remember a grand tour where Roglic has not crashed, usually multiple times. I would love to see him win, but this year I see him just as crash prone as usual.
Froome was called "Crash Froome" at the start of his career. He even crashed into an official standing right in front of him, think he thought the man would move, but he should have when to one side - must be in 2010
Yeah, Chris got his stupid crashes out of the way early in his career.
Vinegaard to crack early. Rog v pogi for the win
I hope that Jona does not lose confidence in his bike handling skills
Just in:Sepp Kuss misses TDF due covid recovery. 1 easier obstacle now since Bart Lemmen aint Kuss

#7-#100 - tadej 😜
😜🦋👊
Gotta make the “sittin on the chesterfield” merch. Maybe even a Chris Horner special edition from chesterfield. Complete with the red highlights.
"Primoz Roglic" 32x in the first 8 minutes alone.... Am I a part of some weird Primoz Roglic-MK Ultra-experiment or something?
PR’s best hope is 3rd on the GC.
HIs main obstacles is "stay up right." His rival is the "Mother of Luck." And his weakness is "fading at 3rd week."
Yep. And no sepp to save him. Jai and Vlasov have got to be good. 🤞🦋👊
I can't imagien a scenario when P.R. wins
#7. Primoz Roglic.
Jonas Vingegaard is like a boy robot 😅
I'm really nervous about the first few days of racing with a huge peloton, everyone wanting to ride near the front, riders from curb to curb... please no Allez Omi Opa this year.
JV supported SK at the 2023 Vuelta in the media, and then went after him on the road... and that makes it hard for me to support him.
For contrast, consider Froome and Wiggins at the Vuelta and TdF...
Roglic has a good chance to come out of the blocks fast... but the 3rd week is always going to be tough for him...
It got ugly over there at Jumbo that’s for sure the Vuelta. They tried to tell us all it was all good but I didn’t believe any of that talk. 🤪😱🦋
I disagree Chris, i think Vlasov will be a big rider for Primuz, he's finish top 5 at the tdf himself
Let’s hope so. Bora need someone that can deep into the last climb to stay with Roglic. 🤞💪🦋
I’m always hopeful for him to win but I expect Tadej domination
Stage one could already show crack in the GC if anybody is a lot off their best. Let’s hope all four are ready. 🤞💪🦋👊🔥
Generally, it's just nasty to have a TT on the final stage. Given Primoz's history... we might be in for a nail biter!
Right. Certainly no fan is going to be the race is over until it’s really over if Rog has just a minute lead again. 🤪😱😲🤔🦋🔥👊
Greg didn't seem to mind. 🙂
Jonas? I predict he will lose 1m50s at the finish of Stage 1. He will then tell his DS that his pain is severe.
I can’t do it!!😅 For me, anyone other than Pogacar wining it will be a succes.😂
Yes Roglic doesn’t win the Giro in 2023 without Sepp Kuss. Vingegaard was not exactly a choir boy either. He attacked Sepp the day before taking back a minute and he went up the road on the Angliru with Roglic rather than pulling Sepp up to the summit.
Roglic couldn’t beat Pogacar in 2020, and it seems like Roglic’ form hasn’t gotten much better/maybe it’s gotten worse. While Pogacar seems to have gotten better. So I think it will take a bit of luck for Roglic to win the Tour.
Roglic needs luck throughout the TdF to start with. 🍀🦋🤞👊
After all bad luck, we are waiting for some good karma for Rog. ❤
I guarantee you that Roglic's biggest obstacles will be the ladies. He's so handsome, he's going to have to fend off the ladies after the finish of every stage.
I think Pog might suffer the same "fate".
I’m rooting for him, but Roglic would be the second oldest winner ever and the oldest since 1922.
His biggest obstacle including many others will be not getting caught doping so far they've been extremely lucky or smart not to be caught 👍🏻
If there’s a banana peel in the road, he’ll hit it.
Only if Geraint doesn't get there first! 🙂
Too many gravel sectors for primoz not to crash 🥲🥲
😊😊😊
👊🦋
well, noone has Sepp Kuss now, it's only fair lol
Without martinez i don't see him having much chance. Martinez is most likely his best dom.
survey says: dont crash!
Maybe his last chance, but it will go unfulfilled again.
$$$$$ on him.
Second favorite in my book right now. 👊🦋🤞💪
