Young'ins just don't get why this stuff was so amazing. The thought of having only 13 channels and almost all of them going essentially dead after 11:30 EXCEPT for this one guy who kept the night alive and rockin' for us is something you just had to be alive and in the right age group to really appreciate.

I saw this exact episode when it originally aired in 6th grade. On the junky b&w "kid's tv" in my brother's room-just let "b&w" sink in too

In 1978 Detroit we only had three VHF channels plus channel 9 Windsor, Canada. Then we had three UHF channels 62, 56 (PBS) and 20 from Wixom. We only got more channels when basic cable was installed in February 1981. Before that no one had more then the broadcast antenna channels. At 2 AM they played the national anthem, signed off to test pattern or snow like being on an off channel.
Me, my brother and our friend met The Ghoul and got his autograph around that time. He was really great. We used to use our older brother's tape recorder to reenact his skits like Frog Cratchit. Times were much simpler.

I thought that the Ghoul's death on April 1st was a cruel April Fool's day joke, but unfortunately that is not the case.....😢 Ron Sweed the Ghoul will NEVER be forgotten! Long Live GHOUL POWER!!!!!!

I never had a clue that the Ghoul had a tie to Westand, Michigan. I grew up and lived there till I was 42 (59 in two days). I got to meet the Ghoul at a Detroit area convention long ago. Still got his autograph somewhere. Miss you Ron! RiP (Rest in Parma).

The Ghoul taught so many of us young kids in Motown about music back then...I mean Personality Crisis by The New York Dolls! Ron Sweed was a national treasure.

@The mysterious Miss X I can't even express to you how much the Ghoul meant to us kids here in Detroit growing up.
Me and my brother and our cousins and all the neighborhood kids would never miss his show.Ever!
I saw Ron at a local comic book convention here in the 90's doing an autograph signing and you should have seen the crowd around him. I was too nervous to even go up and talk to him.Now of course i wish i would have..

This is WGPR-62 era stuff!!!! 6th grade!!!!!! The end of the line for the Ghoul in Detoilet for the 1970s....gone after half a season and disappeared by March '78 I think. Devastated. I remember the opening of this episode; the Ghoul kicking over the fake camera all pissed by a bad review in a local paper and Dave Ivy saying "the Ghoul sure is mad"

I met Chuck Gugel in Beaumont Tx. in 1980. It was Ironic as we were both from the Detroit area. I NEVER KNEW Chuck met the Ghoul until now! UNREAL! This vid made my day!

Thank you for posting all the clips, particularly this one featuring good ol' Dave Ivey. Dave had the table next to me at a convention in Cleveland a few years back. I was a big fan of Dave's, for all the artwork and cartoons he'd done on The Ghoul show over the years, and was delighted to find myself at his elbow all weekend. Dave and his wife were both warm and funny, and the hours flew. I pulled him into an horror host presentation, and he told store after story of the show's hardscrabble production. So great to see him here in his prime, dry and strange in his humor, like some kind of rust belt Jonathan Winters. Like Ron, he's missed by family, friends and fans. Thanks again for the post.

@@dstoyano That's all available without Sven, he's part and parcel of the entertainment experience. Like Elvira, I would've never seen a lot of great flicks if I hadn't been a horny little kid and so easily drawn in by her look. Then I found out she was also hilarious and just like MST3K I got to see some pretty good flicks while being amused.

@@ursee1 The Ghoul was from Cleveland. He was an intern with Ghoulardi on WJW TV in Cleveland in the 60s and got the blessing from Ghoulardi (Ernie Anderson, ABC announcer in the 70s) to borrow his schtick as "The Ghoul" on WKBF Channel 61 in Cleveland from 1971-75. When WKBF folded, the Ghoul took his show to other locales including Akron and Detroit. The show was also syndicated in other Kaiser markets like Boston and San Francisco. Ron Sweed is a Cleveland native (I think Garfield Hts suburb).
