I watched another video wherin the ladies wrapped a string a few times around the base of a large barrel cactus, lifted it out of its pot, replaced the soil, and lowered the barrel cactus back into the pot or placed it into a largerl soil filled pot. That was a technique that I myself had used.
Another useful technique that could accompany the foam block technique is the use of 2-3 chopsticks to suspend the cactus centered and at the proper soil line. Chopsticks span crisscross across pot rim and contact the cactus just under the spines at the root/stem planting depth. This is most helpful for holding a round spike-ball in place without hands. This allows one to scoop in the soil evenly and poke it down. Just ask my softball sized Gymnocalycium schickendantzii! Happy planting!
This is a really good question! Personally, I would avoid using foam with prickly pear. When it comes to glochids, I prefer using cardboard, heavy card stock (like all those ad mailers we get), or I imagine a thick stack of newspaper would work too. Or tongs.
Great idea
I have been wondering how to handle my spiny cacti when the come due for repotting

Ohh that's a great technique! Thank you so much for sharing. Maybe I'll use it when I try to ground a ferocactus this fall.
I use foam for everything and then I use it for repacking later again! It is handy and inexpensive!
Ha! Love this! Real recycling at its best
The foam boards are a really good an easy method to avoid those spines.❤🎉😊
Yess! Our hands thank us!
Great idea! I will have to get some foam to add to my cactus repotting tools including chopsticks, metal tongs, towels and newspapers!😍❤🌵🥢
Ha! I have the same group of tools with some added cardboard to the mix 😁

You're welcome!
Beautiful catus if you like grafted but a great idea
Saving hands across the world 😁
Does this work for prickly pear cacti? Do the glochid spines get embedded in the foam?

Absolute necessity when handling cactus!
I just use gloves and cooking tongs.. works great for me
Yeah! So many different ways to handle spiny plants. Cardboard works well in some situations too.
