When the window is in place, attach the suction handles to the inside of the window. Attach bungee cords to the suction handles and fix the other end of the bungee cord to the opposite wall. This will keep tension on the window as the adhesive goes off.
At 17:04, you really gotta have a lot of faith in those sucker handles! And just before, yes you really were 'bloody lucky' indeed with the mastic running out just at the last possible moment, wow!
I could here the panic in your voice when racing against the weather, still much easier than the old way of fitting the rubber around the hole, getting the glass into the rubber, and then sliding the lock-in rubber into the lock groove using a piece of string, I did 4 of them on a camper back in 1971, it was a nightmare.I think you were brave to film this....and no swearing🤔 Looking good Mel, I watch all your videos,I would love the freedom of a camper, just me, the wife and the dog, into the sunset,I can dream.
@Keith Barrat I think your slightly confused. The pull cord is for factory rubber without the locking bead. A diamond shaped wire tool is used for the locking bead after a peculiar S shaped hook has levered the glass into the rubber I used to fit both types back in the early 80s. And would happily do them now. They were great for finishing inside with just carpet or vinyl. Bonded Windows have always scared the crap out of me but watching this has calmed all my worries Thanks Mel Also the tip to remove the jigsaw foot is brilliant I used to cover the cutting area with card. I want to have a go at bonded Windows now. Anybody got a van I can practice on??
I’ve been waiting for a weather window to cut the windows and roof vents in my van and this weekend is due to be nice... hence why I’m watching UA-cam!
At 6:50, & in many other of your vids also, it always reminds me of that brilliant Steve Martin film ' The Man With Two Brains', like when he's doing surgery in the operating theatre (perfecting the 'screw top method' , fab stuff), and the cat wanders in 'Get that cat outa here'!
Hi Mel Nice job . Next job would fit high security locks on the van. Because you some body nicking your bog roll which was in shot at the end of the video. 😂😂😂
You’re absolutely welcome just take your time and do one at a time try keeping your work area clear and free from clutter but most of all measures twice cut once good luck 👍👍
Big tip to all potential window fitters .apply your rubber around window first inside van . I done my own windows the the sealant squeezed into van & hardened . Big problem now the rubber U TRIM WILL NOT PUSH INTO PLACE . Had loads of folk say trim it . But this is an impossible job if you ask me the stuff hardens like concrete & also you could easily damage glass with blade or similar tool .
17:06 If it were me, The wind would have blown the tape onto the other side and ruin the perfect sealant bead. Then I'd be forced to toss the whole window onto the pavement...
I did my first window last week, got two more plus a blank window to do possibly this weekend. Good fun 😳.. If anyone is doing this job I have a tip. Before placing the window on the van I opened both front door windows first. Then once the new window is in place I can open either of the two front windows and close them without the air pressure blowing the new window out. Then on my van a continuous press of the remote lock button will wind the windows up.
Hi Mel, just wanted to say thank you for making this tutorial on fitting bonded windows. Just got done fitting the sliding door on my Sprinter conversion.
Mel, I was scared to death about doing this. But as usual your super clear demo and explanation has given me the confidence to do it. Your a star! Just need to get a sprinter now! 😆
@@BigVanSmallWorld on The high risk list so in the house working from home for at lest the next 12 weeks. You are a diamond who always cheers me up. Keep safe Mate
Hi Mel I would always put the u seal on before fitting the window if the sealers to thin or press the window to hard you can struggle to fit after the windows in
Hi Mel thats the only thing i didn't do myself on the van, was a bit scared to cut a big hole in the side because you only get 1 chance. I'm looking forward to watching the vid 👍
Hi, Mel, this might help on taking your next windows out of the box, instead of lifting them out upwards and struggling just cut down the sides on the front and fold the cardboard down like a flap and then just pull them out from the front... Enjoying the build, nice one...
Great channel with lots of fun and acknowledged mistakes which really help. (I haven't had time to read 342 comments but) what is the black line that mysteriously appeared around the cut out at approx 14.20 mins?
I think the mysterious black line is primer that you have added to the van cut out. I have just fitted 2 windows (first time) to my sprinter in 4 1/2 hours - most satisfying - I hope they're still on in the morning 🙂 (if not it's all your fault). Jigsaw footplate tip works great - mine has 4 settings for amount of reciprication - set to zero (but make sure you have plenty of spare blades). Any tips for of the week?
job well done Mel,although i sat here worried for your glass as it sat there overhanging the trestles on the one side,i thought any minute now your going to step away from the van and knock it over, looking good though
Did you step on a bullfrog at the end of the video? Either that or you have a pet duck LOL. Laughed so much I nearly wet myself. Great video especially when the cat did the death from above dive.
I know how you feel I was nervous watching the guy fit all my windows and skylight. I’ll be too scared to do it my self. Looking really good Mel :) been thinking maybe a few years after using my lwb I might get a mwb as a second camper :)
Mel, the van is looking Great! The window makes a huge improvement, letting in light and air. I have solid windows in my sliders, I wonder how costly it is to have glass cut to put in a small openable? Stay Healthy!

Hi Mel, im sure you have mentioned this in one of your videos, im about to cut a hole in my van to install a window, Im sure I've seen you take the bottom plate off your jigsaw before you cut the hole, is there a reason for this as if it makes things easier I will give it a try...also does the wheels near the blade not scratch the paint surface?...cheers pal
100% take it off and use the little roller don’t worry if it scratches the paint as it’s so close to the cut it will be covered by the glue and the glass good luck 👍🤓👍
When the window is in place, attach the suction handles to the inside of the window. Attach bungee cords to the suction handles and fix the other end of the bungee cord to the opposite wall. This will keep tension on the window as the adhesive goes off.
