Without any doubt, this channel is so underrated and yet one of the best youtube channels out there. Immensely enjoyed the video with coffee, snacks, beef jerky and some more coffee lol. Time and time again, 10mm proves itself to be the best mm out there and this video clearly demonstrates that simple truth. Of course they're all deadly calibers as even 22LR kills, but hitting a charging bear with 10mm will ruin its day real fast.
@@AlaskanBallistics Yes, will definitely try to do some more sharing and recommendations when I comment on other channels. If more people knew what an amazing channel and incredibly informative and educational channel you're running they'd be flocking here in queuing lines.
Great video, congratulations! I am a police officer in Brazil and I always walk with my .40 s & w in the waist, here are few like the agencies of police of use to 9mm being more used by the departments of bureaucratic police, those that work more inside an office with papers, I know that at 9mm Your benefits but at the moment I would not change my .40 s & w by 9mm. Returning to the video I think it was missing 357 SIG for the comparison I consider an excellent goat. Thank you and sorry for my poor english!
Maycon tudo bem?
You got that right the funny thing is those crazy 9mm guys will tell you that the super modern day advanced 9mm ammo will do better than that, and will not put any energy ( shock ) into a human body . 😂😂 they are so funny.
The "bullet jacket" material you pointed out is actually aluminum that was picked up from the the griddle when the SOLID COPPER XP bullets passed through it.
Another great test, very enlightening. These rounds are designed to cause damage from the cavitation created by the cutouts in the sides of the bullet. Gel tests I've seen show some good size wound channels for these rounds, but the 10mm is, as you said, the King. The wound channels from the 10 are pretty impressive. These are deep penetrators, so you need to be very aware of your surroundings, especially innocent bystanders! Thanks again for your valuable efforts. Much appreciated!
I love Underwood ammo so I really enjoyed seeing it in different calibers. I use Extreme Defender as my carry ammo. As a disabled senior 9mm and 380 are it for me and the Underwood Extreme Defender helps me get the most from smaller calibers. I do want to get some Extreme Penetrators for some woods use but use their Hard Cast ammo right now. Not too helpful if I run into the black bear in this area but I'd give it a try, the 9mm is what I carry in the woods.
@@AlaskanBallistics shot placement? Same reason I trust the data on why 9mm Xtreme Penetrators would work just well against bears. Easier to train with, cheaper to shoot, follow-up shots on target, etc. Bigger calibers are inherently harder to shoot are they not? Same goes for ammo price, availability of ammo, accurate follow up shots, accurate first shot off (especially revolvers, heavier triggers), etc. 9mm is just easier to master, I would say, simply because you can shoot more of it at a time *edit* and not be fatigued or develop a heavy flinch reflex. I've put 3000 rounds through mine and with the correct ammo, I trust my follow up shot ability more over a higher recoiling, harder to accurately place first shot without the flinch reflex affecting accuracy (my trigger control needs a lot of work), and just harder to acquire ammo for. I honestly wish 10mm was cheaper and more accessible so it could be my default answer to the bear defense question. Great video btw, especially the data sheet
Underwood loaded ammo is my favorite too. The extreme series from Lehigh or Gold Dots/Nosler/Golden Saber are all projectiles that definitely perform better with a little hotter velocities.
@@AlaskanBallistics I think they look like a Black Talon round in gel, like a star.. I saw a video, but don't remember the caliber. Mine are 174gr 1050fps, the extremes are120gr 1420fps. I edc a G 21 (use to own the G 30 though) w/ 1 extra mag of extreme, 1 of maximum. Would like to see a comparison vid though.
@@TheRealZJE313 all of these helpers suffer due to short barrels, the difference is .45 is already such a fat and slow round that it is very hard to encourage it enough to keep up, diameter isn’t everything
This was a really cool test, actually doing this research to figure out what would be the best carry caliber out of my current available options for when I go to Alaska in a few months 🤣🤣 exactly the test I was looking for thanks for the work
Thanks for the video. It just confirmed my decision to ALWAYS carry my 10mm when in the woods or back country. My personal choice is the Springfield Armory XDm.
Thank you for doing this detailed side-by-side comparison with the kind of stock, semi-automatic pistols that most of us actually own/carry. May I make a suggestion? Throughout the video, you are scientifically rigorous (e.g. multiple chronographed shots out of similar barrel lengths), methodical (e.g. laying out each and every round and each and every firearm prior to testing), and your attention-to-detail is simply phenomenal (e.g. calculating the standard deviation , which I've never seen before out of hundreds of ballistics videos). But then at the very end, you guesstimate penetration, which is by far the most imprecise part of this evaluation. Perhaps it would be possible to repeat the study with a different bullet backstop?
Chuck, aside from ejecting and feeding, the spring set up will not do anything to improve or diminish the capabilies of a cartridge. The combustion is the same regardless of what springs you use. Ref: @5.04. Edited to show that I'm actually wrong making this statement. A better lockup created by a stronger spring creates better ignition and more speed as Chuck explains below.
I know it's 3 years later but just a tip- "du01" on the Caldwell means "1st duplicate", as in the velocity is the same as the previous round, because otherwise you wouldn't see the number change and think the shot didn't register. "du02" would mean the 3rd consecutive identical reading, etc. Got one myself last year and had Xtreme Defender +P 65gr 9mm clocking at 1800fps out of my P320 carry length. I'd reckon squeezing every bit of velocity out is even more important with these fluted bullets
Great test! I have carried Federal HST 230 grain + P in my full frame Sig Sauer P 220 for years. 7 of us here in SLC, UT now carry the Underwood Extreme Defender 120 grain 45 caliber round. Five (including myself) have a full frame, and two carry a Compact 45 caliber pistol. It would be great to see a Paul Harrell type "meat test".
I've got to try the xtreme defender. I bought some bullets for handloading and we're going to load those 120gr xtreme defenders into .45 Super and .460 Rowland.
Extreme Defenders are the s*it as they are better suited for bipedal predators - as opposed to wild animals lol! 10 mm will be great....someday if you could do 120gr 45 cal that would be FANTASTIC! Anyway thanks for any Defender instead of the Penetrator.....
That is a good ammo for penetration. It’s my choice in my Glock 42 .380 but my .380 is only a backup gun. I like Federal HST for 9mm (124) and .45ACP (230) defensive carry ammo.
You're welcome. I love my g40. I've done several videos with the g40 and xtreme penetrators and even have a verses .45 super xtreme penetrators coming up.
Brother, I know this vid is months old now, but watching this one and reading the comments is what got me to finally get off my butt and join Patreon. For your channel. Keep on keeping it real for us.
You act surprised that the .45 acp is much slower...really? That`s what makes the .45 acp superior, it`s a huge piece of lead, going at a much slower speed, so it doesn`t over penetrate or pass thru-and thru. It expends ALL it`s energy in the target.
Don't know where you got that from, I wasn't surprised at all by the results are exactly what I expected. I still thought it would have gone deeper than and did, but now I know
Nice to see the 40cal had better pentration the the 9mm and the 45.rite now my cc is a ruger sr40 and recently bought a box of the extreme defender in hopes that they'll be my go to carry round.plan on doing my own test very soon just debating on whether or not I want to buy some level 2 body armor to see if the 40cal round can defeat the armor like the 9mm+p+ round can.
Or Chuke got bear blood and drool all over that old batch of XPs, where it dried up and caused extra friction in your G29 barrel. Why, I'm surprised it fed and fired at all!
interesting how underwood (and everyone else too) puts out +p for the 9 and 45 but only a medium load for the 40. could be pushing 1500 without going +p. and that shows how even the 10 was loaded low too
@@AlaskanBallistics ive been reloading 40 for about 25 years and never had any pressure or gun issues. those problems are typically glock related. i have a cz and there are no issues. if the weapon cannot handle saami spec loads then it is a faulty and bad weapon. 35k psi in a 40 is just like 35k psi in a 9
@@AlaskanBallistics dont know what to tell you. factory ammo? sounds like multiple gun failures, though not impossible to get a bad factory load. reloads? stay away from whoever is making them. none of the 20+ people i shoot with have ever seen a kb irl. either way its not the caliber, its a faulty weapon or a bad load
The 45 auto was pretty underwhelming for an Underwood +P loading. It kind of defeats the point of using the Xtreme Penetrator in the 45 auto. By the way, what's the difference in barrel lengths between the Shield and the P239? The difference in velocity between those two is fairly significant.
Just picked up a box of the 10mm because I'm heading out to some empty areas in TX. glad to know that should I run into hogzilla this will do well to keep me safe.
Interesting, but I'm not sure what the take-away of this is, since the relative depth of penetration was right where you'd expect. Unless you're comparing these to comparable JHP and/or FMJs of the same caliber, there's no point, since IMHO there's no common benchmark by which to measure performance. And I really like the Underwood Xtreme ammo (other than its price).
You don't understand? If you're up in the air on say which caliber S&W Shield Plus to pick up, where you had your mind made up to carry loaded with this ammo for bear protection while hiking/camping but wasn't sure how each caliber DIRECTLY compared. He actually did an excellent job varifying the real world questions I have honestly had asked of me and heard of many many people ask at our local firearm retailers. My own long term take aways; Americans we love our .45 but I've gained huge respect for the 9mm which is now my personal choice in the shield plus performance center, ported 3 1/8 barrel. God forbid if that time ever comes for any of us, the most important factor is the actual ability to accurately and consistently hit the target, say a bear charging you. With my 9 I figure atleast 8-9 hits from my 13+1 mag. Even massive brown bear cannot live thru that (many real cases of browns being stopped dead with 9's) Ammo choice is almost as important. These extreme penetrators have genuinely saved many lives over the years. I choose these, along with buffalo bore +P 147gr outdoorsman flat nose hard cast
Thanks for the video Brother! 10mm is definitely the KING!!! Now if CZ would wake up and make a 97B in 10mm and a Scorpion evo jn 10mm, I would have to take out a loan!!!😁😎 Stay Safe Brother! 🙏🇺🇸
You ought to test the Winchester USA Ready 45 ACP 230 grain FMJ Flat points against other other penetrators. In slightly moist reams of paper and moist books it out penetrated Underwoods 255 grain hard cast bullet. That hard media deformed the Underwood and Winchester noses but the 230 grain out penetrated the 255 hard cast bullet. Results might be different in softer media. Testing this bullet in softer media it went through two sheets of plywood and 6 gallon jugs in straight line penetration and kept going. I wish I would have added a few more jugs. It has a little smaller meplat than the 255 grain and seems optimum for penetration. However the meplat is large enough to do more damage than a RN and it tracked straight in both media tests. The Underwood windage is different from my other loads therefore it was not ideal to be changing windage between loads. The Winchester shoots very close to my regular loads. It is target grade ammo and would be my bear defense load in a 45 ACP. If I could find these bullets as components I would load my own.
@@AlaskanBallistics Yes they do but I cannot find any flat point FMJs anywhere right now. The Winchesters shoot accurately for factory ammo. I run them through a Lee Factory crimp and it tightens the brass lip so they feed really slick now.
@@AlaskanBallistics Setting up a Lee Factory crimp die to optimally feed in your pistol allows you to uniform even factory loads for your particular gun. This increases functional reliability in defense situations.
Is that really the lightest Underwood Extreme Penetrator .45 round they make? To be truly competitive in this test they would need to produce a .45 more like a 165gr @ 1300fps I just discovered that they make a 120gr x 1320fps .45 - that might have been better for your test. - That 10mm - WOW, nearly 700lbs energy - I like!
I totally agree, but that's the lightest and only xtreme penetrator they make in .45. In a few weeks I have 10mm vs. 45 super xtreme penetrators coming up. As you can imagine, same problem, though typically 10mm gets stomped by .45 super.
I load my own Lehigh, Makers t-rex for rifles. I'm going to load some 85 gn .308 in my 7.62X25 for my Tokarev M-57 Yogosavian M-57 copy. I hope to get 1600 FPS I hope I don't crack the slide I'm. Going to work up loads from the slowest and up from there I will do a video of it.. happy Shooting
Loved the video no B S and straight to the point. The couple thumbs down are from butt hurt 9mm fans who keep saying a 9 is as powerful as the 40 just as the 10 isn't as good as a 44 mag. which isn't as powerful as a 460. I shoot them all and it's just the way it is.
Where did you buy the ammo? I searched in Anchorage and no one had any of the fluted style and most ammo retailers didn't even know what I was asking for! It was totally frustrating.
The Glock 21 would've done better for obvious reasons! My edc is a Glock 30 that's .45 super capable but the barrel is too short honestly to get the most out of .45 super rounds! Great video 👍!
@@AlaskanBallistics I just bought a new gen 4 Glock 21 and an alpha Wolf 6.6" barrel two weeks ago! I'm building a PCC/PDW... can't wait to get it finished! Your videos are very informative...many thanks!

So I guess you just want him dead Dead, and not dead Dead DEAD! "As coroner, I must aver I thoroughly examined her And she's not only merely dead-- She's really most sincerely dead!"
ACTUALLY NO! 22 CALIBER IS NOT SUFFICIENT ENOUGH TO STOP ANYONE! UNLESS? YOU SHOOT THEM CENTER IN THE HEAD! 22 CALIBER WOULD NEVER MAKE IT THROUGH CLOTHING, MUSCLE, BONE, AND INTO A BODY ORGAN FAST OR HARD ENOUGH TO MAKE THAT PERSON FULL OF ADRENALINE STOP BEFORE HURTING YOU OR SOMEONE YOU LOVE! ATLEAST A 38+P CALIBER. BUT FOR ALL THE EXPENSE OF THAT? YOU WOULD BE MUCH BETTER OFF WITH A GREAT 9mm HANDGUN LIKE THE GLOCK 45. WHICH IS A MAGICAL 9mm WITH A 17+1 STANDARD MAGAZINE CAPACITY!!!! AND ALSO, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SHOOT TO KILL ANYONE! YOU CAN VERY EFFECTIVELY STOP ANYONE WITH WELL PLACED SHOTS TO EITHER OR BOTH SHOULDERS!! THAT WILL SEVERELY DAMAGE THE ROTATOR CUFF AND DISABLE THE USE OF THEIR ARMS! ( NO ARMS? NO ATTACK! ) OR YOU CAN SHOOT DIRECT IN EITHER OR BOTH OF THE KNEES!! THIS WILL INSTANTLY DROP ANYONE! ( BUT THEY STILL MIGHT BE ABLE TO USE THEIR HANDS AND TRY TO USE A GUN ON YOU! MOST OF THE TIME THEY WOULD BE IN TOO MUCH PAIN TO TRY THOUGH, BUT YOU NEED TO BE AWARE OF THAT JUST IN CASE ) OR, YOU CAN SHOOT EITHER OR BOTH SHINS WITH OR WITHOUT SHOOTING THE KNEES! AND THAT WILL ALSO DROP ANYONE INSTANTLY! *** NOTE!!! IF YOU SHOT THESE SHOTS TO THESE PLACES I AM TELLING YOU ABOUT WITH A 22 CALIBER BULLET? EVEN SEVERAL OF THOSE BULLETS TO THESE AREAS MIGHT NOT STOP THE ATTACKER! BUT ANY CALIBER OF 9mm OR ABOVE WILL! 38+p CALIBERS WILL TOO. BUT!! WITH THE 38 YOU HAVE TO GET A REVOLVER, WITH ONLY 6-7 ROUND CAPACITY!! AND THE PLUS P AMMO, AND FOR ALL THAT EXPENSE?? YOU WILL BE FAR BETTER SERVED AND PROTECTED, WITH A GLOCK 9mm! BUT YOU MUST PRACTICE ALSO!
Very cool test I’ve become a big fan of the underwood ammo loaded with xtreme defenders it’s in my edc 9mm I carry the 90gr +p. Good stuff and very accurate and consistent. Curious since the two 49’s you tested you had 75 fps difference between only a half inch more barrel length I wonder if 9mm is effected that much with barrel length between my shield with a 3.1” and my p30sk with 3.27” barrel. Probably not enough to matter lol. But still you had an interesting data point here with the 40’s! The 43 you tested I think has a slightly longer barrel than my shorty 9mm’s. I bet that stuff would be cookin out of my scorpion.
How about doing a updated video of 40 S&W Winchester white box 180 grain JHP'S ( bonded and not bonded ) in some jell blocks , meat and different barriers just to show that the 40 and it's ammo is reliable and not going anywhere.. 👍.
I plan on doing it but i don't have a long barreled .40s&w or a long enough barrel 9mm. I've got a 6.5" kkm barrel in my g40 and a 6.61" barrel in my g21. I've got a video with those with 10mm vs. .45 super.
I wonder how my 1911 10mm would like these... The price has always scared me from buying a test box. I know any lead cast rounds get jammed up on the ramp, and certain FMJ with "extra blunt" noses do, as well.
Might be better off fitting another barrel then. Good also to check the magazine springs. Many times they're not fast enough for the faster moving slide.
The 45's performance was disappointing. I was hoping it would do better, if only to justify to myself, putting off the purchase of a new woods gun a bit longer. My wife's going to be saddling me with an Garmin Inreach mini, so the new handgun purchase is being put off a bit longer. A couple weeks ago though, a little fall into a river had me reflecting on what woods gun I'd actually be getting. I've always just assumed 10MM, however, my dumbass slipping, and falling into a river of spring runoff, and the ensuing magazine AND handgun cleaning afterwords, has me considering a revolver over an autoloader. Within 5 days, I already had rust starting to form on the magazine springs. I suppose I should have taken them apart the same day i took a seat in a river. Another thing with a revolver is no bullet set back. Hardcast ammo can be hard to come by, and It's like I'm slowly bleeding ammo due to bullet set back. Not a problem with a revolver, but the big con to a revolver is 6 shots and a slow ass reload.
Revolvers can jump crimp. Glocks are pretty good, as far as rust. Better than most. They are easy to completely disassemble and in a pinch you can just blast them with Ballistol, until you can get a more serious cleaning in. When training some military guys, Chuck Taylor purposely left his Glock on the bottom of the ocean and retrieved it 6 mos later, none worse for wear. All that, and revolvers still rust too, and they're harder too get to the inside.
It would probably work if flat nose and bonded. The penetration still isn't as good as similar designed 10mm. I like my .45 Super conversion on my g21. Big heavy brown bears the .45 even with 230gr would under penetrate. If all I had was a .45 auto, i'd use the 200gr bonded tmj +p loading from the speer lawman line.
@@AlaskanBallistics thank you for the info. I have a .40 also with flat nose 180 grain FMJ but not sure how that would do against bears if need be. I know its more fps so would it be better then the .45?
It could possibly be better than a 45 depending on the speed out of your length of barrel. If you have like a glock 35 the kkm barrel that is 6 in, then yeah it would probably be better than a 45. But I think the 200 grain bonded flat nose from Speer Lawman plus P loaded in 45 would be better than most 40s

@@AlaskanBallistics all good brother. Ypu got tje G40 or the G40 MOS? I was thinking from what everyone complains about tje 40MOS i wanted to get a regular G40 with nigjt sights and habe it milled for a MOS. I do like the aftermarket support for the Glocks. I guess the real appeal to m of the Glock 40 over my xdm5.25 is the longer barrel and the ease of putting a even longer barrel with a comp. Justmàu be me but i great up loving long slides. Question for you guys, why does changing the recoil spring increase velocity? I own a G29 and put a 21lbs Wolff spring in it because it’s been recommended by so many, including ammo manufacturers, but I don’t understand why it helps.
I run the same ammo in my G20 and put a 22 lb ISMI flat wire spring in it. Those higher pressure rounds will slam that slide back and risk damaging the frame without a heavier spring. It cycles my XP's just fine and probably the heavy Buffalo Bore rounds too.

Late comment, but I'll stick with the 45. For bear nothing less than a 44 mag in my hands. Very good video. If you soak the paper in warm water for a bit the results may be different. Just a thought. I'd love to visit Alaska in summer. South Wisconsin is too dam cold for me in winter let alone 70-100 below where you are! Lol. DB
Because it's an all copper and you don't get ft lbs and penetration if you don't push it very fast. Bullet weight is trivial compared to bullet construction.
Also lead is more dense than copper. Same size bullets, lead will weigh more. Also copper is more solid and doesnt deform like lead does so in a sense its stronger than regular old jacketed lead bullets.
9mm's only niche is the balance between recoil and enough power to do the job on flesh, not barriers tho lol. That is why cops use 40 sw before because they need that barrier penetration and also capacity and gun size. 40sw has near capacity as 9mm, fits in 9mm size guns. The only real with the round is the recoil is not as easy as the 9mm so more people are able to shoot better with a 9mm than 40sw. But if you have the strength, training, and poise the 40sw's recoil is no issue and would be the superior round to 9mm for ccw. 10mm is king but not ideal for ccw for most, that is why the 40sw was created.
If you live in the lower 48 go on Underwood's website and turn on their notifications for when they are back in stock. Good luck. Thanks for watching and the comment.
Would you prefer 9mm or .40 for black bear protection? I used to carry.40 but with all the 9mm ammo now I've been carrying it. I have a 10mm I carry most of the time but my friend is thinking of getting something he hikes alot
I have actually carried much better than lesson 2.0 5" 9 mm in the woods For bear with 147 grains must be Buffalo bore hardcast in it and ran into a black bear. I carried it in my 12 gauge shotgun as we were duck hunting is a cunning and walking a trail back to a lake. It was dark on the way out and I carried that gun specifically because it was the only gun in holster combo I have that accommodatied a light at the time
Ammo makers do make different loads, which can vary in their usefulness for different applications, and 10mm is no different in that regard. Defensive loads tend to be optimized for short-to-mid sized barrels, while hunting loads tend to be optimized for standard-to-long barrels. Some loads burn fast in short barrels without receiving much or even any benefit from long barrels, which indicates the powder burned fast and there's not enough powder charge to keep accelerating the projectile down the entire length of the long barrels. Other loads give off huge flashes as the bullet leaves the muzzle, and show significantly faster velocities from long barrels, indicating that there was still unburnt powder being wasted when the bullet left the short barrel.
Standard Glock 30 isn't ready to take 45 SMC or 45 super but I'll definitely do some out of my g21 that I've converted. do you know where I can find the ammo in Alaska?
Alaskan Ballistics hey Chuck, I thought maybe the boys at AK ammo would have that, it’s a Double Tap product. According to one UA-camr I’ve been watching, the guns just have to be rated for +P ammo. I’ve seen him shoot 450 SMC out of a CMMG BANSHEE, and a standard Glock 21. So his UA-cam handle is Harlywood. Somebody in town sells Double Tap, besides Sportsman’s Warehouse, I’m sure.
@Ozark Yeoman most of the time we can order online without paying almost double the cost of ammo in shipping for Next Day Air, otherwise it has to go ground and that means going to exporter who charges shipping fee in Seattle to ship it up here by boat
We've learned a great deal about .40 ammunition since I purchased my first one, a G35, for IPSC comps back in 2005. It's crazy how the .40 is pushing up on the 10mm with modern, off the shelf ammo.
Obviously, the 10mm 🏆 wins hands down. But if you're looking for extreme penitration, it's because you're thinking about killing something very big. With that in mind, I want a large caliber revolver for reliability. 41mag 44mag 45LC 454cas 500 Okay, some people can't afford another gun, & better ammunition will be helpful. But as terrific as autos are, you can only count on the one in the chamber. & besides, you only typically only get one or two shots anyway.
@@AlaskanBallistics I've put up a couple videos ..I have a better camera now I'm learning to use so more videos in the future!! The military arms channel did I review on them quite a while back gel tests pretty Awesome bullets
@@AlaskanBallistics I think many people carry and advocate for .45s because they just think they should, ballistically it's a dog, it was designed in a time where a big FMJ hole was better than a small FMJ hole. 1911s are great guns, but if I was carrying something that big and heavy I would carry a Magnum revolver with similar capacity and MUCH more power.
Great video glad you do the comparison. Just curious why didn’t you throw the 357 sig. in the mix? And if you did later what fire and did you use and what did you get for velocities? Thank you for your time and effort with these great videos very informative
I wouldn't be surprised to see some departments switch back to .40 in a few years. 9mm is great, but the switch was partly politically motivated. As in PC.
@@rob10ring The 40cal was honestly a mistake/failed experiment and just wasted taxpayer money. Dont get me wrong I own one and love it but I understand why law enforcement would move back to the 9mm.
They are switching to 9mm because shooting stats havnt shown any improvement in lethality with the 40. With any pistol caliber it's shot placement not caliber. Pistol rounds just don't do the damage if you don't hit a vital organ

Maycon tudo bem?

I love Underwood ammo so I really enjoyed seeing it in different calibers. I use Extreme Defender as my carry ammo. As a disabled senior 9mm and 380 are it for me and the Underwood Extreme Defender helps me get the most from smaller calibers. I do want to get some Extreme Penetrators for some woods use but use their Hard Cast ammo right now. Not too helpful if I run into the black bear in this area but I'd give it a try, the 9mm is what I carry in the woods.
It'll work with good shot placement
Bears aren't bulletproof.
No but they're much more tough than you think. I've seen one still be alive after taking a .338 win mag to the mouth

Good choice in Caliber. I'm glad the XDM works for you! Godspeed
Eventually I plan on doing ballistics gel version of this. So, great suggestion. Also plan on doing a longer barrel version of this.
As an Alaskan I love your channel. These rounds are epic!!!
Thank you. They work well.
Sometimes it keeps the lock up tighter and longer so you don't lose as much pressure or the back of the cartridge
@@AlaskanBallistics Wow ! I ididn't realize that. Thank you for the info, it makes perfect sense !

You act surprised that the .45 acp is much slower...really? That`s what makes the .45 acp superior, it`s a huge piece of lead, going at a much slower speed, so it doesn`t over penetrate or pass thru-and thru. It expends ALL it`s energy in the target.

The 45 auto was pretty underwhelming for an Underwood +P loading. It kind of defeats the point of using the Xtreme Penetrator in the 45 auto. By the way, what's the difference in barrel lengths between the Shield and the P239? The difference in velocity between those two is fairly significant.
Agreed on the .45! The sig239 is a 3.6" and 3.1" for the shield gen1 40

2:37 you said the ammo is expensive, I’m sure that statement was relative at the time. Considering the current ammogeddon.
Actually i found the 10mm the other day cheaper in a store.
But yeah i get what you mean.
Even massive brown bear cannot live thru that (many real cases of browns being stopped dead with 9's)
Ammo choice is almost as important. These extreme penetrators have genuinely saved many lives over the years. I choose these, along with buffalo bore +P 147gr outdoorsman flat nose hard cast
Hard to beat that 147gr buffalo bore

Speer made bonded flat point 200 and 230 gr TMJ at one point. Sounds similar
@@AlaskanBallistics Yes they do but I cannot find any flat point FMJs anywhere right now. The Winchesters shoot accurately for factory ammo. I run them through a Lee Factory crimp and it tightens the brass lip so they feed really slick now.

Is that really the lightest Underwood Extreme Penetrator .45 round they make? To be truly competitive in this test they would need to produce a .45 more like a 165gr @ 1300fps
I just discovered that they make a 120gr x 1320fps .45 - that might have been better for your test.
They do make an xtreme defender in those bullet weights.

If only Walther would make a 10mm PPQ. In my opinion the PPQ is the most beautiful striker fire option. Just not a fan of 40 or 45.
Agreed 👍 👍
Loved the video no B S and straight to the point. The couple thumbs down are from butt hurt 9mm fans who keep saying a 9 is as powerful as the 40 just as the 10 isn't as good as a 44 mag. which isn't as powerful as a 460. I shoot them all and it's just the way it is.
Thanks for watching. I like each caliber for their nitch as well. God Bless friend
Glock 29 killed it 10 did amazing and so did the 40 right behind the 10
Where did you buy the ammo? I searched in Anchorage and no one had any of the fluted style and most ammo retailers didn't even know what I was asking for! It was totally frustrating.
Alaskan Ammo, in Anchorage.
The Glock 21 would've done better for obvious reasons! My edc is a Glock 30 that's .45 super capable but the barrel is too short honestly to get the most out of .45 super rounds! Great video 👍!
Yeah my glock 21 has the 6.61 inch line wolf barrel for .45 super. I like it's velocities.

@@texasbeast239 that's why I have the 45-70 loaded for home defense

I'm going to have to do a 9mm barrel length test with it
That's a nice collection of pistols
How about doing a updated video of 40 S&W Winchester white box 180 grain JHP'S ( bonded and not bonded ) in some jell blocks , meat and different barriers just to show that the 40 and it's ammo is reliable and not going anywhere.. 👍.
I'll get to it ASAP
@@AlaskanBallistics thanks man 👍.
I feel like you need longer barrels to really get any (+p) effect out of these rounds. Idk I'd love to see this test with longer barrels.
I plan on doing it but i don't have a long barreled .40s&w or a long enough barrel 9mm.
I've got a 6.5" kkm barrel in my g40 and a 6.61" barrel in my g21.
I've got a video with those with 10mm vs. .45 super.
@@AlaskanBallistics ya I'm with you man. You can only do what you can do
I wonder how my 1911 10mm would like these... The price has always scared me from buying a test box. I know any lead cast rounds get jammed up on the ramp, and certain FMJ with "extra blunt" noses do, as well.
Sounds like you need a qualified Smith to polish that feed ramp.
It's been polished already. That was the first thing I read about "not-$1500" 1911 10mm.
Might be better off fitting another barrel then. Good also to check the magazine springs. Many times they're not fast enough for the faster moving slide.
What brand is it?
Rock Island. I've ready upgraded mags. Barrel is kinda hard to upgrade, it's already a bull barrel, non-standard type (no takedown bushing)
Are you concerned about the pressure shooting Underwood ammo?
Nope if anything is been lighter lately
I love the underwood ammo, I carry it in 9mm, .357 and the big boy 45colt maximum expansion for the judge. Goes bang every time
I've actually had a bad primer in one round. But typically yes it's very reliable
I carry a snubby 44 mag and a .45 super
Revolvers can jump crimp. Glocks are pretty good, as far as rust. Better than most. They are easy to completely disassemble and in a pinch you can just blast them with Ballistol, until you can get a more serious cleaning in. When training some military guys, Chuck Taylor purposely left his Glock on the bottom of the ocean and retrieved it 6 mos later, none worse for wear. All that, and revolvers still rust too, and they're harder too get to the inside.
If you reload the lee factory crimp die is the ticket. Your days of bullet setback will be over.
This is not the perfect science to compare each calibers.
@@rob10ring And to think I've been religiously cleaning my Glocks for 30 years. i could have just blown them off and kept on trucking 😂
Another awesome ammo test Sir !!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks ! Good Test !
I love the extreme penetrators not for shooting, but to be used in a pinch when there’s no Phillips head screwdriver nearby.
Very true
10mm rules all but would a 45 with 230 grain FMJ be good for bears?

Thank you for the comments and for watching!
Question for you guys, why does changing the recoil spring increase velocity?
I own a G29 and put a 21lbs Wolff spring in it because it’s been recommended by so many, including ammo manufacturers, but I don’t understand why it helps.
Only thing I can think is that the stiffer spring slows the tilting of the barrel which allows the bullet to leave the barrel with less resistance.
So yes it's about dwell time. The longer the gun stays in full battery, the less pressure comes out the back of the chamber.
I run the same ammo in my G20 and put a 22 lb ISMI flat wire spring in it. Those higher pressure rounds will slam that slide back and risk damaging the frame without a heavier spring. It cycles my XP's just fine and probably the heavy Buffalo Bore rounds too.

Cool video, I sew you wearing a VOLS jacket, are you a VOLS fan in Alaska?

@@AlaskanBallistics AWESOME ME TOO, I'M FROM CHATTANOOGA TN.
Why such a light ran weight in the 10mm. Usually a 10mm is 180 or 200 and sometimes 220 grain.
Agreed... still carry my glock 29 mostly though
I wanna get some 140 grain extream penatraters for my glock 22

Would you prefer 9mm or .40 for black bear protection? I used to carry.40 but with all the 9mm ammo now I've been carrying it. I have a 10mm I carry most of the time but my friend is thinking of getting something he hikes alot
Neither 10mm. But with the right ammo either would work. Whichever one has the longest barrel for the most velocity. That YOU can shoot the best
@@AlaskanBallistics . Thanks that's what I was telling him. I mostly carry my 10mm he was debating on 9 or 40
I have actually carried much better than lesson 2.0 5" 9 mm in the woods For bear with 147 grains must be Buffalo bore hardcast in it and ran into a black bear. I carried it in my 12 gauge shotgun as we were duck hunting is a cunning and walking a trail back to a lake. It was dark on the way out and I carried that gun specifically because it was the only gun in holster combo I have that accommodatied a light at the time
10mm is supposed to be shot with 5" barrel or most of the powder is just flash
I generally do i have a 6.5" barrel in my g40. But this is a back up gun that is still getting nearly 700 ft lbs of energy.
Okay Soravia, then how did it get almost 700 foot pounds of energy in the test? The video itself makes your comment look silly.
Such a windy day, but it was fun, babe!
Everyday is fun for you
Only with you!
Cool comparisons. I would love to see you shoot some comparisons, using the 450 SMC 230 FMJ-FP, from Double Tap, out of that .45.
@Ozark Yeoman you know of a site that doesn't charge an arm and leg if they even shipped to Alaska?
@Ozark Yeoman most of the time we can order online without paying almost double the cost of ammo in shipping for Next Day Air, otherwise it has to go ground and that means going to exporter who charges shipping fee in Seattle to ship it up here by boat

We've learned a great deal about .40 ammunition since I purchased my first one, a G35, for IPSC comps back in 2005. It's crazy how the .40 is pushing up on the 10mm with modern, off the shelf ammo.
Not really.... 10mm in a 3.7 in barrel still gets more than .40s&w in a 6.5" barrel. Go see my specific 10mm vs. 40 video
Great video!
Thank you!
Obviously, the 10mm 🏆 wins hands down. But if you're looking for extreme penitration, it's because you're thinking about killing something very big. With that in mind, I want a large caliber revolver for reliability. 41mag 44mag 45LC 454cas 500
Okay, some people can't afford another gun, & better ammunition will be helpful. But as terrific as autos are, you can only count on the one in the chamber. & besides, you only typically only get one or two shots anyway.
If you're looking for big game penetration, then you carry a .45-70. Everything else is just back up.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some departments switch back to .40 in a few years. 9mm is great, but the switch was partly politically motivated. As in PC.
@@rob10ring I agree, If you follow what the govt does you'll be all over the place. There's no common sense in there at all.
This is why I can never figure out why some folks are in love with 40SW because its not all that much powerful than 9mm or 45acp.
