    Doug. On the CNC. Use a sheet of MDF then level it off with a large bit. Just hit it with a 1/16" pass.... Oh. Table is way off. You should shim the aluminum table and get that as flat as possible before the waste board goes on. Then you will get much better results and waste board will last much longer.

    What you should do is get a piece of MDF as a subplate. I don't know how much Z travel your router has, but what you could do is get a piece of MDF as a subplate and put 2 pins in adjacent corners (top left, lower right). Then what you could do is actually make production fixtures. You would build top plates for each piece you're making that have the pin holes in them. Drop the top plate on to the sub plate and the pins locate it perfectly each time. Then when you write your programs, program them all from a similar X0,Y0 home position. That way you never need to set your home position. Just drop your top plate on, tape your material down, load the program and go. The same can be done for your Z0. Set it at the top of your fixture plate. What this does is even if you cut all the way through your part, it will be in the same exact spot every single time, eliminating the need to ever change out the top plate fixture. This will also eliminate the fluctuation in your Z height breaking through the part, because once you get everything dialed in, it will make your setup times so much faster, which of course makes you more money. Which you can then put into things like, I don't know, the Mule. Or the T-bird. Or taking Rafa's mom out to a fancy dinner so she'll stop complaining about having to eat at Taco Bell all the god damn time.

    Doug that is part of the standard procedure when installing a new spoilboard. You need to fly cut the whole thing so it is perpendicular to the spindle. Also you should be zeroing your Z axis for every cut routine.

    Doug you are gonna have fun trying to pry that board off of the tape man. Nice solution is drill some holes in several spots in the middle of the board get t-nuts for the t-slots on your aluminum bed and screw down your board with socket head cap screws. Tighten down the board from the middle out to the edges for perfect flatness.

    Doug, looking at it, your table is bent! I think all those times you have stood on it has bent it right in the middle. Look underneath how it's supported in the middle. It bounces up and down every time you shuffle across it to the beat.

    Put the Double sided tape on there like you did in the video, then put something heavy like Rafa's mom on there to ensure that the board is firmly pressed down onto the Tape.
    Also if you are going to be doing leveling cuts on your spoil board often you may look into getting a larger fly cutter, or a Face Mill cutter. Finding one that would fit the chuck on the router would be the only issue. Try a company called MSC, they are a supplier for machine shop equipment. Or try any local machine shop supply to see if they can find you a larger Face Mill/Fly Cutter.

    Use MDF for your spoilboard, I buy a 4x8 sheet of 3/4 MDF and then run a surfacing pass on it to make it level to the machine. No reason to use melamine since you are just going to cut it up anyway.

  • @bobbybarnes2609
    @bobbybarnes2609 7 років тому

    I would think that the best way to level the board would be to flat cut it with the CNC itself since it would be zeroed by the cutting head itself. I'm not sure what the price is on them, but if your table was flat, you could use a planer to flatten them. You could have a replacement, swap them out and run them through as needed. Would reduce some time since you wouldn't have to run a full levelling program before a production run.

  • @m88231
    @m88231 7 років тому +1

    Looks like your table may not level. The wood may be crappy but if the base isn't good it will make it worse. Raise the one corner that didn't cut to make it more level. It may even be the floor. I know you set it pretty good but I would double check it. This will save you time on replacing that board with fewer leveling passes.

    Dude. When you were standing on the CNC machine i could see the deflection in the table. I am not familiar with how that machine operates but it looks like you would benefit from adding some supports in the middle of the table to take out some of the sag. You could take some steel bar and slide it through the clamp channels on the table that might reinforce it enough.

    Doug. You may want to get a planer to cut the MDF to a uniform thickness before making your parts. That would help with accuracy. Just my .02

  • @michaelcamp4921
    @michaelcamp4921 7 років тому

    If you can use thinner material to start with for making the parts, then buy thicker spoil board, screw the melamine, use MDF for spoil board. Then....when the spoil board is all spoiled up, take it off and use it for material to make parts out of!!!

  • @rickcperry

    Surface the spoil board when you install it, also zero the Z on the spoil board and then manually add the thickness to your Z axis. EX: after you zero the Z, enter Z=+0.250"for cutting 1/4" MDF.

  • @ChrisMeirose
    @ChrisMeirose 7 років тому

    Why do you need a solid board for your sacrifice board? You should be able to rip a board and run in through a planer to a consistent thickness and then put it down in intervals of your choosing. If you had an inch or two gap you're unlikely to have enough deflection of the board above you want to cut that it would impact the final product. If you think it will deflect, then you just butt the boards up against each other. A planer was designed for this leveling work. Not sure what impact the additional cycles will have on your mill however. Plus, by doing as I'm suggesting you can just replace one segment that wears out rather than the whole thing if only one is getting too cut up.

    Is the floor level? Is the table frame tight, square, true? Is the travel of the tram true? Plexiglass is a hard sacrificial board, won't kill the bit- but would last way longer than that Chinese dog food poison. Q: Why is the bezel a separate piece? After all (plunge) cutting is done- would a simple bit and separate program bevel (chamfer) the bezel? Or- chamfer THEN plunge cut the iPad pocket? Then- build a jig- that holds the pockets upright, and router the interface socket holes? Minimal fine sanding, primer, then a color or raw, suede backing installed or not (price varies with completion). A "paint booth" with "drying area". I worked in a few factories, and have seen automation first hand. A metal mold, mold release spray, and fiberglass with a UV room might be better than MDF and routing. The mold is sometimes big money.
