How to Convert .MTS (AVCHD) to MP4 with HandBrake (Easy Step-by-Step Guide)

- In this video, I show you how to convert .mts (AVCHD) to MP4 with HandBrake. Some camcorders (like Sony and Canon) record in .mts, which is not suitable for UA-cam. MP4 is a universal format that is good for UA-cam and video editing programs. HandBrake will also compress your video into a smaller file size, so you can upload it to UA-cam faster.

UPDATES. In case my annotations went by too quickly in the video, here are some things I wanted to add.
--Check the box for "Large File Size" if your video is 4GB or higher. If your video is long, HD, and/or shot with a DSLR, you'll probably need to do this.
--If your video is "interlaced," like recorded in 1080i, you need to go to the "Video Filters" tab. Next to "Decomb," select "Default," from the drop-down menu. Decomb works better than regular Deinterlace.
You do NOT need to do this if your video is "progressive," like 1080p.
--UA-cam recommended bitrates:
8000 kbps for 1080p
5000 kbps for 720p
2500 kbps for 480p
--Audio sample rate can be 48 khz.
Working on some corporate work and this converted the files perfectly!

I've edited my own videos very easily but when my new camera was recording avchd, it made it extremely hard to edit. Now that I was able to compress the file down a bit, it edited like a charm. Hi, you can convert the AVCHD to MP4 if you want but I generally simply upload the 1080/50p or 1080/60p + AC3 files to the youtube and it happily converts it for me.

Thanks Marcus, this was eye-opening to me:) I'll probably go through this again a couple of times. Normally, when filming with my Nikon camera the films ended up as Avi files which I could edit on the PC. Then I bought this camcorder and instead of AVI I ended up with these MTS files which I could not get to work on the PC only on the camcorder itself.. Untill now!

really comprehensive tutorial, thank you. Can I ask you a question? When I want to add the source file, Handbrake doesn't see any files in the folder, even though they are there. Why is so? The files are in AVCHD Video (.MTS) format. Did you change your .mts files extension to something else to make Handbrake to recognize them? thank you...

I'm not an apple person but, just recently bought an iPad2 and a 7th gen iPod nano... Any chance you would know how to convert AVCHD formats to run in their correct aspect while still compressing them enough to keep small file sizes but retain respectable audio & video quality?

Thanks for the excellent video...HOWEVER I have downloaded the 64bit Handbrake to my windows 8 computer and am trying to convert Sony video MTS files...the destination box won't automatically fill nor can I type a destination in...is there a fix?
About the blank and un-browsable and un-typable problem..I put the destination elsewhere on the computer and lo and behold this area is accepted

...no idea why but if you can't use one folder - try making another one randomly elsewhere
Im using Mac with Maverick . I have No Audio. I saved a preset and selected all the proper AUDIO settings as you suggested. When I drag in an MTS file the settings for Audio say " NONE". When I select "ADD TRACK" nothing happens. Im not able to change anything Got a solution? Thx

When I open this in Windows movie maker, it lags. I tried to convert it thru another program called mpeg streamclip and it shows a black screen. Please help.

I edited the handbrake converted file in windows movie maker, which reconverted the file and compressed it into a wmv file which, when I tried to upload stated that it would STILL take about 400 minutes to upload. I've been doing this converting stuff all day, there has got to be an easier way. So I thought now I'll use handbrake again to re convert it to an mp4 to see if that speeds up the upload process. Why is it that my videos look full HD on my viewfinder but speckled and terrible quality after they've gone through handbrake? Also, why does the 'keep aspect ratio' change my output to 1920x1072 instead of keeping it at the source file ratio of 1920x1080?

hey marcus - what are the best settings to use if you want to convert .mts to .mp4 without losing any quality? I would like to keep the original quality for my editing in fcp or ae. when I apply the default settings i go from approx 290 mb file to 90 mb file - think that means there is a lot of loss
Hi Leon, you're right, this process will compress your videos so you can upload to UA-cam faster.
Hmm. I did a Google search for "HandBrake Constant Quality" and looked at the documentation. When you go to the "Video" tab, under "Quality" check the radio button for "Constant Quality." If you move the slider to RF 0, that should be lossless. But you might get a file that's bigger than the original video. I've read RF 16-20 is okay. I'm guessing. Good luck.
