Building a classic walnut serving tray

  • I recently built this serving tray to give to someone as a birthday gift. I designed it myself, inspired by the simplicity and elegance of classic shaker furniture.
The tray is constructed of solid walnut, with a walnut veneered plywood bottom. The corners are mitered with maple splines, and the handle holes are cut out with a homemade template to achieve consistent, crisp lines. All exposed corners and edges are rounded over with a 1/8" roundover bit to make handling the tray more comfortable.
The build went smoothly, taking only one weekend. To edit this video, I switched to a new (more advanced) editing software, and have been slowly learning how to use it. The editing process took much longer than the building process, but I'm very happy with how it turned out. I am interested to see what you all think of the slightly different video style.

Great job mate, on the build and the edit. The serving tray looks fantastic, definitely simple but elegant. I edit for a living and would be happy with this if I cut it myself. It flowed well and was simple yet elegant like the tray. :) keep up the good work.

By the way I love what you did with the letters. Must took awhile with the keyframes haha

Haha yeah keyframes were my life for a solid 4 hours on this video. Not so bad with the easy ones (like the gripper wiping out the letters on the table saw fence), but an enormous pain for less smooth movement (like the intro). Thanks!

Fantastic design! I'm going to make one myself - what is the thickness of the plywood for the base?

Thanks, Tom! I believe the base is 8th inch, or perhaps 3/16th.

How the fuck are you only at 6.4k? The vids (instructional aspect and videography itself) are outstanding.

Hah thanks for the kind words! I'm doing the best I can, it's just a slow grind to get new subscribers. Been at it for just about 2 years now! Tell your friends :)
