Transitioned to film late last year. I got my scans in July after having the unprocessed rolls sit in my fridge during the early covid months. They're shit photos, not even worth sharing on social media. But I found myself thinking back to those moments when I shot the images. I have stories now which I normally wouldn't have had I shot with my digital.
Shooting film is my favourite, but all of this can be applied to digital aswell. In fact shooting digital like I shoot film - slow, methodical made me appreciate shooting digital more.
A good hack to really make this more apparent is by using a small SD card like 2/4 GB. Then shoot only in RAW and dont delete any shots. Shoot manual. For a full frame 24MP camera shooting RAW, your 2GB should take just about 24 shots. Which is what a standard 35 mm film would provide. 1) Shooting this way forces you to slow down and think about your shots. 2) The limited number of shots(and no deleting) forces you to properly critique and review ALL your shots at home, good and bad. 3) Shooting in RAW prevents any compression that might otherwise soften any mistakes you make.
film changed completely my approach on life. it makes you notice the beauty in the world, even in things that are not necessarily appealing to the eye. it makes you wait for the right moment, or the right light, the right perspective. I started to appreciate things more, and even though I suck at it, I'll forever be grateful to film photography. love Willem's photography and loved this video.
there's just something nostalgic about that of shooting film that you get the results in a significant time later and it's always a shot in the dark. it's like creating a baby but the whole time you wouldn't know how good looking the child will be
Came here for some casual film content but this is so moving that it brought me to tears I HAVE BEEN BAMBOOZLED in the best way possible. Thank you, Moment and Willem.
When I got my first DSLR, I practiced the 'take all the pictures' approach. Then checked it at the end of the day, the photos were crap and I didn't improve for months, even though I'm learning stuff like DOF, shutter speeds, ISO, and lenses. Then I got into Lomography and started shooting film. My first few set came out like shit, because I had to manually expose them, so all my pictures were under or over exposed. The composition was all wrong. Every time I had my films processed I learn what was fundamentally wrong with my pictures. shooting on film has taught me to slow down, think, and composed the shot before taking the photo. To properly expose the shot and even learning the sunny 16 rule. My photography improved greatly after shooting film for a few months.
Willem is such a master at his craft. He can make an amazing image from any camera. Not only that, but he does it with his own style. Awesome video, and awesome work Willem.
The pacing and the mood of this video was incredible. Really fit the topic of the video and put on a kind of documentary vibe. Apart from that you could really tell that Willem's appreciation for the medium has grown even more, since I started watching his videos. Great stuff!
if someone talks to you about something like willem is talking about photography, with him remembering what gives him joy and his eyes glaring because he loves photography so much. Listen to them and let them have it.
YOU ARE SOOOOO RIGHT. today I shot some film and i love it. Juste the fact that you have to wait fore perfect moment perfect frame. Film is not dead. by the way I subscribed.
Love this dude and the way he enjoys what he does. The cinematography on this piece is ON POINT. The grading film-like colors and contrast fits perfectly. Would love to know the camera and lenses choice also. Great job Moment!
I agree wholeheartedly with your point. I shot street with a friend this weekend and took only my film camera. On other outings I would come home with 100s of digital images but found myself struggling to fill a 24 shot roll with content that I'll have to wait a week to see what I even got and I have no problem with that one bit.
Yes! Excellent! I believe those of us who studied and learned photography before the digital era, instinctively know this. Even the act of using a hand held light meter helps to instill a slower and more deliberate process in image creation. Thanks so much for sharing.
Just the reason I want to shoot more film and why I started just taking more pictures again and enjoying it, after feeling burned out with digital photography.
GREAT!!! Really enjoyed watching this. Connection with others in similar thought process is sometimes overlooked. Refreshing to be able to connect at times.
well I'm doing the same thing with my current digital camera. Not as "slow" (because you still get to see your picture afterwards) but I still use the same process to set up the shot and everything. At least it doesn't cost me tons in film rolls and developing fees.
Absolutely! Shoot more of these films. So tired of camera reviews. God bless Matti-but can't watch his stuff anymore. Rather see inspiration. Rather see WHY?!!!! Rather see how another artist sees the world differently.
I Shoot film because it's familiar to me growing up in the early 90s most photos were film. I was given my dad's Pentax k1000. I also have some of the more affordable film cameras with manual controls. Tumi film photos if they expose correctly look perfectly excellent.
Very emotional video! For all those who are wondering, the two amazing songs are: - "Luna" by Tony Anderson - "August" by Philip Daniel A big hug to you all over the world, be kind to each other! 🤗
I think I had an unfair distaste for Willem's channel when I first saw it. Maybe because I was tired of hearing about film, or maybe because his style didn't resonate with me much at the time. However, I've come to really appreciate how down to earth he is and that he is unapologetically passionate about what he's doing. While it's fair to say all of the principles he's mentioning are applicable on digital cameras, it's nevertheless cool to see someone popular on youtube just telling people to slow down and enjoy the process. It's good advice for photos, art, and life in general. It's great that he's found a way to do his thing with a process that feels good for him. I've also really started to appreciate the looser feeling some of his photo's have. It's not an approach I usually consider when I go out and shoot, but it was actually really interesting to see being done well, and I think it made me expand my compositional vocabulary a bit. Great video!
I give up film recently due to the ridiculous price of cameras and declining film stocks. Always regret selling my RZ though and love shooting it. Just wish someone would bring out a new medium format camera.
Things take as long as they take. Lighting, composition and button-pushing take exactly the same time-either film or digital. Where I live I can get color developed within three hourss. B&W takes overnight. Although I was born before WW2, today I live in a digital world-using my iPhone I can have photos online immediately. Video take a little longer. Both film and digital cameras are so last century 8-)
If you can see pictures you can see pictures. Film removes the anxiety of the outcome in this seemingly anxiety ridden world for the younger generation submerged within a digital world. If digital shooting makes you anxious because of the immediacy of the result, shoot film and learn how to judge yourself less harshly, because film will give you the space.
Why hasn't a modern day company released a new film camera... I hate seeing prices out the roof for anything half decent these days.. Fantastic video btw
If you want it slow, shoot slow! I am a child of the analogue age and now i shoot digital exactly the way i shot on film. It is you, not the medium. And the real creative process is the post production. Same as it ever was. Don't romanticize shooting on film! It was very expensive back in the days and it still is and you had to wait for developing. I hated it! Now i got my results immediately and i spend a lot of time on retouching, sometimes hours for just one picture. Nothing has changed to get a good picture. And you still need talent...
I like shooting medium format film too that sometimes change the mood to photograph out of digital world for a rest. What's RF camera you use? hassleblad 67?
Because I started with film in 1962 ans prefer grain to little squares. I shoot digital, but my love is film. Besides, a Hasselblad 500 CM is far Sevier than anything digital? LOL!
Love the moment items but Shipping to the Uk breaks the bank D: Will you ever have a warehouse in the Uk or ship for free depending on the amount you’ve spent?
Main reasons: 1. To say "I shoot film" or "I'm film photographer"; 2. To worship cameras and hold yourself back in Photography Art; 3. It's actually dope (but no, it's not "better" than anything); 4. To get poor fast (specially if you're in an underdeveloped country and have no friends). Follow me for more film photography tips!
Should we make more videos like this?
Yeah mane
Yes 👍🏽
yes we want these type of content❤
Yes!!!
Yes pleasssee
This came together so beautifully in the edit. Thank you Moment
Thanks for inspiring so many :)
Willem you worded this perfectly and Moment you shot this incredibly. I want to go outside and shoot some pictures, that's for sure.
Funny how the weakness of film being so slow becomes it’s greatest strength because it adds intention and patience to photography
100%

100% bullshitt. If you can't have the discipline to do that on your own then maybe you should look for another Hobby.
♥️♥️
@@kenh.5903 Or maybe you should stop gatekeeping film photography and let people have their opinion on it and just enjoy it.

love Willem's photography and loved this video.
I love his philosophy of a camera being a tool to appreciate life and your environment more. So magical
I think it's not just nostalgia. It's also the tactile sensation of using a physical oibject and not just using computers and such
Moment made me cry with a Willem video. Ok.
same
there's just something nostalgic about that of shooting film that you get the results in a significant time later and it's always a shot in the dark.
it's like creating a baby but the whole time you wouldn't know how good looking the child will be
This gave me goosebumps. My day has been made before 8 a.m. Thank you for your excellence in storytelling.

Beautifully put, Willem. My perspective on the world has changed significantly since i started doing photography.
100% relate to this

Everyone who loves photography should watch this video, and understand why film and the process behind it stands out so much from the digital. ♥️
I'm totally agree with you. I'm a film shooter as well. It has been 4 yrs shooting with film and I love it!
This video gives one of the best explanations as to why photography is so stimulating and interesting. I love it
The pacing and the mood of this video was incredible. Really fit the topic of the video and put on a kind of documentary vibe. Apart from that you could really tell that Willem's appreciation for the medium has grown even more, since I started watching his videos. Great stuff!

This video is a perfect description of the photographic process, beautifully done

Brilliant commentary from Willem. His work is so inspiring.

probably the blackmagic camera they talked about before
shot on canon c200 and sigma 18-35 :)

I like shooting film because of the high cost and inconvenience.
This completely resonates with me 🤣
Accurate lol
Just the reason I want to shoot more film and why I started just taking more pictures again and enjoying it, after feeling burned out with digital photography.
Beautiful beautiful film, captured everything it needed to and felt close to the heart, man I got emotional watching such a simple video, well done.
Wow. This rocked my world.
Willem has become one of my faves for film photography, very consistent and great content
So nice to learn about his 'why' after watching the challenge
this is stunning. also the red sweatshirt is ICONIC
So damn good. Fantastic work guys 🙏🏼

This is great. Beautifully shot too !!
Beautiful video, looks amazing and very well put together. Great job! 🙌
this is beautiful 🥺
Can we just give an Oscar to who ever made this video ?
I agree this was bloody beautiful !
This was so wonderful, wow
Best explanation ever...amazing editing. Top
So beautiful. The next video should be Why We Should Shoot in Film & not only just photographers.
Wow, amazing.... Everything you said is also applicableto digital photography.
Great sound design. I didn't like the abrupt end but the whole video was something I would like to download and watch it everyday.
GREAT!!! Really enjoyed watching this. Connection with others in similar thought process is sometimes overlooked. Refreshing to be able to connect at times.
So beautiful. Well done, Niles.

that's beautiful... and true... and magic
Gorgeous work guys
I totally get this! Film preferred as well 🎞🎞
Very nice. That exactly what I feel like when I pick up my film bodies. Wait, you guys were in Half Moon Bay? I recognize some of the places.
I Shoot film because it's familiar to me growing up in the early 90s most photos were film. I was given my dad's Pentax k1000. I also have some of the more affordable film cameras with manual controls. Tumi film photos if they expose correctly look perfectly excellent.
thank you for the willem content!
Love this dude
Very emotional video!
For all those who are wondering, the two amazing songs are:
- "Luna" by Tony Anderson
- "August" by Philip Daniel
A big hug to you all over the world, be kind to each other! 🤗
Beautifully shot @Niles❤️
Loved this! Very poetic + nostalgic

Very enticing video. Also, Willem is Moment’s Tom Brady of Film Shots. 📹
So good!
Lol I’m in tears :)

I think the biggest reason I like shooting film is that it curates for me.

This is perfect 👌🏻
This is amazing guys
To be a true stud photographer you need to shoot film. Not only that but develop yourself in a dark room
I like your style to tell a story good job bro do you self shoot?
If you want it slow, shoot slow!
I am a child of the analogue age and now i shoot digital exactly the way i shot on film. It is you, not the medium. And the real creative process is the post production. Same as it ever was.

Nice video editing here
Do you also teach shooting with Flash in this online course?
I take a little bit of LSD and listen to this video over and over, while not the intended use its very soothing ❤😭
Because I started with film in 1962 ans prefer grain to little squares. I shoot digital, but my love is film. Besides, a Hasselblad 500 CM is far Sevier than anything digital? LOL!
good video short
Is that a Fuji GA645?
Can I please get the name or artist of this fantastic music
Love the moment items but Shipping to the Uk breaks the bank D:
Will you ever have a warehouse in the Uk or ship for free depending on the amount you’ve spent?
Amazing..
I drive a tractor trailer for my job and sometimes i see something and say to myself how can i get that shot
get it!
Moment i try every chance i get ✌️
Does he have a youtube channel??
viewers: How many rings is enough ring
Willem: Yes
next up is "why I still record on Hi-8"
Main reasons:
1. To say "I shoot film" or "I'm film photographer";
2. To worship cameras and hold yourself back in Photography Art;
3. It's actually dope (but no, it's not "better" than anything);
4. To get poor fast (specially if you're in an underdeveloped country and have no friends).
