    It sounds good but if I was to guess it was running lean that's why the choke helped at wot. It would also explain why when closing the throttle plate a little it will pull more vacuum and suck more fuel. I would try one jet richer it won't hurt and make sure and squeeze the bulb while it's cutting out to rule out the fuel pump. Keep up the good work I enjoy your adventures even when things don't work out 😅

      THIS OLD OUTBOARD I believe we are but different ears hear different things and to me it sounded like the ignition was floating . I have had issues with the vacuum cutoff switch in that to much vacuum tells the engine to stop spark to one cylinder and only runs on one until the vacuum decreases . It just seamed to me you might be asking for an opinion but if your not then I’m sorry about putting my 2 cents worth in the pot .

  • @fleetwin1
    @fleetwin1 5 років тому

    Well, that could be either fuel or ignition related....But, if partially closing the choke helps than it would appear to be fuel related...Did you remove the high speed jet from the bowl when you cleaned the carb? Get some of those felt pipe cleaners. Then, disconnect the fuel and pull the carb drain plug....Now, pass the pipe cleaner deep into the bowl thru the high speed jet and pull it out....You will probably notice some crud on the pipe cleaner when you remove it... Before reinstalling the bowl drain plug, reconnect the fuel line and pump the bowl forcing fuel out of the bowl, which might expel any debris in the bowl...You might try having an assistant or yourself pump the fuel line while it is misbehaving. Indexing the plugs is a procedure for the direct injected OMCs, really won't have any benefit on this engine...If messing with the throttle cable helps, then one of your sync adjustments is way off..With the engine off, remove the throttle cable, and the shift in forward gear, have an assistant hold the throttle arm (where the cable connects) all the way in the wide open position while you have a look inside the carb throat. Is the butterfly fully opened? That "economizer linkage" adjustment is very tricky to get right, especially with only one person making the adjustment... Again, if messing with the throttle cable seems to help, this is only a band aid for sync adjusments that are way off....Again, the economizer linkage adjustment is a tricky one...If the adjustment is too advanced, the butterfly will open fully way to soon, and probably prevent the mag plate from reaching full advance because the linkage jams when the butterfly hits its WOT stop on the carb....If the linkage is retarded, the butterfly will never reach the WOT position....Be sure the throttle cam pick up adjustment is set properly first, that is step on...Messing with the cam pick up adjustment after making economizer linkage adjustment will throw off economizer linkage adjustments slightly. I know it is hard to understand what I am trying to explain with my written words, hopefully you have the correct manual for this engine....Finally, please don't use hotter plugs than OMC recommends for this engine.....

      kramden do you think he’s not running low tension points on that motor ? I don’t remember if they still had the vacuum kill switch on that year , I know the earlier ones did .

    • @fleetwin1
      @fleetwin1 5 років тому

      @@davekimbler2308 Unfortunately, that engine does have the much hated "low tension" ignition...That 40hp has the vacuum cut out switch also....
      Audio quality on these videos can fool you, what I heard could be either fuel or ignition related....He says that tapping the choke helped solve the problem so it seems like it is fuel related. Then, when he messed with the throttle cable, he claimed the issue went away. I am thinking he does not have the sync right....That economizer linkage adjustment is confusing, hard for me to explain it to him using the written word....

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  5 років тому +1

      @@fleetwin1 Hey. Let me try and straighten this out. Unfortunately, due to computer problems, I lost a lot of video that explained things better and how I approached the situation.. Anyway if you guys remember all the crap I went through with the 89 25hp Evinrude and the wah-wah-wah sound it was making (off and on) and everyone was trying to help figure out what was happening. "Its the Rev Limiter", " Its the Reed Valves", "Its Cavitation", its this, its that, and so on. I Did everything, if you remember, I even put that stupid whale tail thing on it. Hahaha. Anyway. After it was all said and done I realized what was really happening. It was me! I was throwing everything off by adjusting the remote throttle cable and messing up my sync. It didn't really make sense but it did. Kramden, if you remember, (hahaha I know we all have a bad case of CRS) back on the 25, when I said, It was happening when I would bear down on the throttle at WOT and I thought I was pushing the butterfly past its limit, it would wah-wah-wah, but you said that cant be the case because there is a throttle stop on that carburetor, which is true (and the same on the 40). So, first real run on the 40 and Wah-wah-wah, then it hit me, here we go again, Been There Done That ! Now, first let me say I've always been a Tiller man, and I've put a lot of outboards back in the water. This is my first rodeo using a remote and cables. So this time I took the idle stop screw out of the equation and set my sync and WOT setting with just using the throttle cable (but that video didnt survive). Then took it for a run, it bucked just a couple times. Slightly adjusted the cable (twice) and it smoothed out (that video did survive). Then I gently added back the idle stop screw and double checked everything. Top speed is a solid 23 and bumping 24 on the GPS and running good now (that vid didn't make it either). One more thing I'd like to add, the throttle linkage control gears at the lever have the typical play/slop for a 45 year old outboard, and vibration at running would "land" them where they wanted to land, and throwing things off. So, end up with two different settings, one running and one not. I'd have my roller/follower set on the cam and crank it up and it would be in a totally different place from where I set it. Hahaha drive me frikkin crazy ! But I got through it. Now, still trying to fix my computer after that last microsoft update, still having trouble playing/editing videos. HELP COMPUTER GODS ! Hahaha Thanks again Guys. Stay tuned !

    • @fleetwin1
      @fleetwin1 5 років тому

      @@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 I hear what you are saying buddy, but adjusting the throttle cable trunnion will have no effect on running quality of the engine. If the trunnion is advanced too far, the engine will never come all the way back down to idle. If the trunnion is cranked in too far, the linkage may not reach the WOT position. Neither one of these conditions will affect runnning quality. Wish I could do face time with you because I realize that the written word is tough to translate into the actual procedures...I get that. I will look for a manual for this engine when I get home, perhaps I can copy the pages and email them to you, then we can go over it together.....D
      You mentioned this engine does NOT have a WOT stop for the carb butterfly, is this true? I thought the older engines had a long roll pin through the throttle shaft that hit a boss on the carb body when the butterfly is opened fully. The newer models, like your 25hp just had a short roll pin through the throttle shaft allowing the butterfly to go right past WOT position and start to close again....
      But, it is like I always say, "never argue with success"....So, if it is running right now, leave it alone and enjoy it....

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  5 років тому +1

      Hey. No I said/wrote "because there is a throttle stop on that carburetor, which is true (and the same on the 40)." I have access to a manual, ever seen this site, www.boatinfo.no , check it out. Anyway like l said, first two Remote Outboards both did the same thing and never ever have I encountered that type of problem before. Actually come to think of it. It happened in one of the first videos on the 89 25. One of the first run videos, Started out wah-wah-wah, stopped adjusted the cable and it was gone. Adjusted the cable again and it was back. I'll have to go back and look for it ! thx again. Stay tuned !

    I have a 1984 Evanrude Super40. I believe it is identical to the 84 Norsemen. Sold to another part of the world and name something different.
    Is it possible to take a electric start system from a 84 Evan rude and adapted over to the 84 super40.
    My problem is that you damn near have to be the Incredible Hulk to pull start this motor and if you're not paying attention it will pull you right back into it.
    So I'm hope is that I can take the electric start setup off of the 84 Evinrude 40 and it will fit onto the 1984 Evan rude super 40.
    Thankyou. 🙏🙏

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  Рік тому

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Are you sure the Norseman is an 84. It's best to look up both outboards model numbers, probably find them on marineengine.com and see if the starter motor brackets are the same. If not you can probably find a good used bracket on ebay but you'll need the part number from marineengine.com. The starter motor should fit the bracket and use the solenoid/wiring you have. I would double check the starter fitment just to be sure. Ebay has cheap starters too. Thanks again & I hope it works out for you.

    • @craigtimmons3468

      Might not be in a service manual but it will have an effect on the flame front and how combustion happens, generally indexing is used on high performance enginge. On stock engines the manufacturer isn't worried about extracting every ounce of horsepower out of their engines, their only interested in making their engines operate within certain parameters while meeting emission requirements.

      in order to index a plug the ground electrode would have to be welded on in a certain spot in relation to the thread AND that would have to be indexed with the threads in the cylinder heads for each cylinder.
