I think ITZY is primarily going to be catered to the Western market. In fact, I can imagine JYP bringing them to the US for KCON this year. Since this is only a single release, promos will be relatively shorter. There's still quite a bit of time in between now and June/August for ITZY to comeback with a mini-album and go full steam-ahead in their promos. Knowing how much Twice comebacks, it's not that far of a stretch. If ITZY doesn't come this year, definitely next year. Also since JYP is said to have a Japanese group debuting as well, there's no need for him to hit that market with ITZY.
Looooove this debut. The music video is fantastic. The song grew on me more on relistens. I don't like the cutesie gg concepts much so I hope they keep this concept! Visuals that make me question my sexuality. Over all 👌💯

The only people who I felt embodied and projected the concept well were yeji and maybe ryujin. But the concept is weird to me. As someone said, it's more 'teen crush' than girl crush. They seem like they're not quite girl crush, and more an uplifting cross between blackpink, twice, in the vein of nct dream and taking clues or response to stray kids' I am who? and bts 'love yourself.' Maybe I'm just missing something but I was a bit underwhelmed as a fan of jyp. It's probably just not for me Edit: After rewatching the video, I understand it a bit more now. There are lots of colors and each member portrays relatively their own color, concept or vibe. If you look in the chorus, there's a projection of different blocks of colored light on each building where the person dwelling there emits their own energy or color vibe. There is duality to the toughness of being yourself and not caring what others think. And a tenderness of self love, which is the kinder, cheery vibe in the song. The drop kinda shows they are up and coming and about to drop this ideal and different presence onto kpop and the audience's world, or an attitude on themselves. Also, As kpopjunkee said, itzy are the reverse concept counterpart to stray kids. They are on a journey and know exactly who they are. Where stray kids were let off their elevator to a lost world, itzy are let of at an airport terminal on their way to take their crown as idols. They are seem with a gesture at the end placing a crown on themselves. They're on their way to take to take their respective title, which can be whatever their dream may be. Its speaks to people with dreams who want to take their own thrones or independently crowning yourself with your own love. I'm liking it!

Here's an interesting thought: I think ITZY is the f(x) to Twice's SNSD. And before I catch a boatload of flak for making those comparisons, I'm fully aware that both JYP groups have long, LONG ways to go before attaining the kind of status enjoyed by the two SM groups. But the "story arc" is too similar for me to ignore. Two girl groups from the same company debut within a few years of each other; the first group goes on to become the nation's girl group, and the second group is different, not really like anyone else, and more experimental? And on a more superficial level that doesn't really mean anything, both Twice and SNSD have/had 9 members, and both ITZY and f(x) have/had 5 members. Just some fun-to-think-about parallels that occurred to me.

its not just itzy, ive noticed a lot of bands have made this " i love myself" theme since BTS started theirs. LOVE the fact that its becoming a huge theme in music now cause we should all love ourselves ^^

My first time watching the full MV, I seriously wasn`t impressed..I actually expected more but then after watching the MV several times, I began appreciating the song..Now I agree with you David..the beat is indeed catchy. All 5 members are charismatic but Yeji is my favorite member in Itzy so far xD
Maybe because we put too much expectation in ITZY. They are okay but since we put too much high expectation, we are dissapointed. I think it is good that they dissapointing us as if they reach the expectation, people will expect more from them and it will be harder. It is better to make them keep getting better in each era.

I'm loving the entire thing. It's bold, it's positive, and it's wild and yet doesn't strike me as over the top. For me the song has very distinct sections that play well together like an unexpected and fun outifit. And the message is great too! That breakdown/bridge when they were on the cars with the "keep your chin up, we got your back!" really brought it home and felt really awesome. Can't wait to see more from them and I hope they do very well.

I think Itzy is really phenomenal and their live performances really sold me! I’m definitely a stan! It’s hard to believe they’re even rookies bc they’re so good, and the song is so catchy I always replay it. When their videos are on I have to watch it lol. && I’m from North America
Not a twice fan but it’s obvious they’re bringing in most money into JYP Rn- all their songs have over 1M downloads and their albums sell like 2Million each sooo Got7 is one of my favorite boy groups but confusingly and sadly their digitals aren’t doing well. They’re physicals are good but no where near twice.
zynbw btw TWICE has surpassed Got7 since last year. Most of the money Got7 made for JYP were from their tours while TWICE are just about to get into touring which is the crazy part. They’ll be making more in their Tokyo Dome TOUR, SEA tour, and US, tour than Got7’s world tour. TWICE made 35 million USD in Japan alone with just their physical album sales. Without counting their endorsement deals, merch, digitals, and concert sales and again this is just Japan. A lot Got7’s earnings (especially Jackson) were made for themselves than actual shares going to JYP, mostly their solo activities.
If I was you, I would buy, I think they'll be very stable on stage, at least yeji, chaeryeong and ryujin are, let's see Lia and Yuna. Also they are very charismatic and 3 of they can be the main dancer. And don't worry jyp will not stop promoting twice because of jyp 2.0. And jyp will debut more four groups and I think itzy will target international fans.

I really don’t get when people say they just debuted and they have a lot of haters already. Seriously? People need to get a hold of themselves and stop being so personal about it. Some might feel that their debut is a underwhelming or it’s different from what they expect or they’re not into the song, etc. whatever it is, all those are just opinion towards the song itself not to each of the members or the group as a whole. The change reminds me of as if it’s your last by black pink where the beginning is a complete different vibe and then it COMPLETELY changes like the part they advertised in the teaser feels like a whole different song than the chorus and pre chorus.

male fan and i like the music quite a lot. switching in between the bouncy basslines is a really good move it keeps things fresh and gets you moving, i can this in some popular gym playlists. visuals are among top of the industry for sure and 5 members is just the right amount to let this type of girl crush+visual group shines imo.
Zell not with this song...they’re talented but I can tell you this won’t be in favour in the western audience(not including the already Kpop fans). Blackpink are most suitable because of their style of music is a bit more in taste of that demographic. This is a Kpop song in and out.

Also Blackpink is from YG so it makes sense to me that JYP would want an "edgy" western friendly girl group of their own, even if this song was not the right one to debut with.

At first I was like this is alright but now I’m kind of obsessed? Like I didn’t even pay attention at the end because I was busy bopping to Dalla Dalla in the background. The song kinda gives me As If It’s Your Last vibes in the way they mix up the badass and bright sounds. Very smart stuff.
I actually love this girl group! They are very unique and I’m not sure why people have such negative opinions about the song being too “choppy” or “messy” or that the beat changes too much when A LOT of the same sudden beat/genre changes are occuring in the music released by boy groups, especially recently. And these boy groups are being praised for it and their “individuality” towards music. I think they are cute and edgy and definitely live up to their name of being unique. Really excited to hear and see more from them 😊

I do know that a bunch of the solo artists released albums too! not to mention all the interviews and variety show appearances + super intern
Idk if I like this song... but JYP Girls =QUALITY. the song is not what I usually listen to but JYP IS GOAT. Every single female idol debuted by JYP have amazing Dance-Ethics/Dance-Form. Including ITZY. Miss A (Fei, Suzy, Jia, Min), Wonder Girls w/ Hyuna too (legends!), even TWICE like Tzuyu isn't the best dancer but her freaking dance-lines are always on-point. There's quality in JYP girls that aren't always reflected in their songs! And that must be corrected. 💕💕💕💕 Waiting for their next song!
This far exceeded my expectations. The visuals, the dancing, the highly addictive song really knocked me out. I have been waiting all 2019 for that addictive song that you hum all day...this is it. My favorite idol is Taemin who is also releasing a song and music video today. I think it’s very hard to compete with this. His MV and song have a very high water mark today.... I’m interested to see who lands on top in the charts this week. I have to say I love this because K Pop really thrives at moments of intense competition like this!

I did the first listen with My best friend earlier and I didn't like the song, but now with David I enjoyed it more. Maybe it will grow on me! They are anyways extremely cute and talented dancers

I am totally with you on this song and group. I don’t find the song choppy because the transitions are so well done. The bass and electric drum heavy beat is dance friendly. The visual in my opinion is better than CLC. They all have the high class vibe in face and body. Also it is a departure from TWICE in a good way. Debut song is not make or break. It’s the leg (follow ups) that count. To me this GG seems unique than all the BP and TWICE wannabes. If I has JYP stock I’d hold, not sell.

Honestly I love this song! Especially the chorus. I get a similar vibe with some Twice songs where it seems to 'jump' genre. I always need to listen to the songs a few times and then I get completely addicted!
I also think it's such a great positive vibe "I love myself", "keep your head up" which I love especially since the members are all so young (I heard they're all born in the 2000s?!). Hopefully it points towards a new, refreshing take on K pop where there's more self love and acceptance of non conforming people (and appearances hopefully in the future...)

Here's an interesting thought: I think ITZY is the f(x) to Twice's SNSD. And before I catch a boatload of flak for making those comparisons, I'm fully aware that both JYP groups have long, LONG ways to go before attaining the kind of status enjoyed by the two SM groups.
But the "story arc" is too similar for me to ignore. Two girl groups from the same company debut within a few years of each other; the first group goes on to become the nation's girl group, and the second group is different, not really like anyone else, and more experimental? And on a more superficial level that doesn't really mean anything, both Twice and SNSD have/had 9 members, and both ITZY and f(x) have/had 5 members. Just some fun-to-think-about parallels that occurred to me.
Your logic is kinda right though. Just like how MissA was to Wonder Girls. It's like they're both trying to balance each other. A very good kind of contrast.

its not just itzy, ive noticed a lot of bands have made this " i love myself" theme since BTS started theirs. LOVE the fact that its becoming a huge theme in music now cause we should all love ourselves ^^

My first time watching the full MV, I seriously wasn`t impressed..I actually expected more but then after watching the MV several times, I began appreciating the song..Now I agree with you David..the beat is indeed catchy. All 5 members are charismatic but Yeji is my favorite member in Itzy so far xD
Maybe because we put too much expectation in ITZY. They are okay but since we put too much high expectation, we are dissapointed. I think it is good that they dissapointing us as if they reach the expectation, people will expect more from them and it will be harder. It is better to make them keep getting better in each era.

I'm loving the entire thing. It's bold, it's positive, and it's wild and yet doesn't strike me as over the top. For me the song has very distinct sections that play well together like an unexpected and fun outifit. And the message is great too! That breakdown/bridge when they were on the cars with the "keep your chin up, we got your back!" really brought it home and felt really awesome. Can't wait to see more from them and I hope they do very well.

Got7 is one of my favorite boy groups but confusingly and sadly their digitals aren’t doing well. They’re physicals are good but no where near twice.

zynbw btw TWICE has surpassed Got7 since last year. Most of the money Got7 made for JYP were from their tours while TWICE are just about to get into touring which is the crazy part. They’ll be making more in their Tokyo Dome TOUR, SEA tour, and US, tour than Got7’s world tour. TWICE made 35 million USD in Japan alone with just their physical album sales. Without counting their endorsement deals, merch, digitals, and concert sales and again this is just Japan. A lot Got7’s earnings (especially Jackson) were made for themselves than actual shares going to JYP, mostly their solo activities.
If I was you, I would buy, I think they'll be very stable on stage, at least yeji, chaeryeong and ryujin are, let's see Lia and Yuna. Also they are very charismatic and 3 of they can be the main dancer.
And don't worry jyp will not stop promoting twice because of jyp 2.0. And jyp will debut more four groups and I think itzy will target international fans.

I really don’t get when people say they just debuted and they have a lot of haters already. Seriously? People need to get a hold of themselves and stop being so personal about it. Some might feel that their debut is a underwhelming or it’s different from what they expect or they’re not into the song, etc. whatever it is, all those are just opinion towards the song itself not to each of the members or the group as a whole. I think JYP just wants to split up Twice's success for... well... twice lol... because they're releasing this japanese girlgroup as well and the CEO talked about serving separate organization-units for groups to make manufacturing contents faster - and he named Twice being a try on for this system
male fan and i like the music quite a lot. switching in between the bouncy basslines is a really good move it keeps things fresh and gets you moving, i can this in some popular gym playlists. visuals are among top of the industry for sure and 5 members is just the right amount to let this type of girl crush+visual group shines imo.

Zell not with this song...they’re talented but I can tell you this won’t be in favour in the western audience(not including the already Kpop fans). Blackpink are most suitable because of their style of music is a bit more in taste of that demographic. This is a Kpop song in and out.

Also Blackpink is from YG so it makes sense to me that JYP would want an "edgy" western friendly girl group of their own, even if this song was not the right one to debut with.

I actually love this girl group! They are very unique and I’m not sure why people have such negative opinions about the song being too “choppy” or “messy” or that the beat changes too much when A LOT of the same sudden beat/genre changes are occuring in the music released by boy groups, especially recently. And these boy groups are being praised for it and their “individuality” towards music. I think they are cute and edgy and definitely live up to their name of being unique. Really excited to hear and see more from them 😊

Idk if I like this song... but JYP Girls =QUALITY. the song is not what I usually listen to but JYP IS GOAT. Every single female idol debuted by JYP have amazing Dance-Ethics/Dance-Form. Including ITZY. Miss A (Fei, Suzy, Jia, Min), Wonder Girls w/ Hyuna too (legends!), even TWICE like Tzuyu isn't the best dancer but her freaking dance-lines are always on-point. There's quality in JYP girls that aren't always reflected in their songs! And that must be corrected. 💕💕💕💕 Waiting for their next song!
This far exceeded my expectations. The visuals, the dancing, the highly addictive song really knocked me out. I have been waiting all 2019 for that addictive song that you hum all day...this is it. My favorite idol is Taemin who is also releasing a song and music video today. I think it’s very hard to compete with this. His MV and song have a very high water mark today.... I’m interested to see who lands on top in the charts this week. I have to say I love this because K Pop really thrives at moments of intense competition like this!
Everytime I hear the name ITZY all it makes make me think of is DITZY, so I really liked the brief explanation of the groups/song name.

That “messy” is called Fusion Groove genre which mixing various genres in one and many groups have previously tried it

Honestly I love this song! Especially the chorus. I get a similar vibe with some Twice songs where it seems to 'jump' genre. I always need to listen to the songs a few times and then I get completely addicted!
I also think it's such a great positive vibe "I love myself", "keep your head up" which I love especially since the members are all so young (I heard they're all born in the 2000s?!). Hopefully it points towards a new, refreshing take on K pop where there's more self love and acceptance of non conforming people (and appearances hopefully in the future...)
