Thank you for the video. When I left school and my Aberdeenshire home I did some lambing work in Wester Ross. The farmers dog would only respond to Gaelic, so I had to learn quick

You should do a follow up with
More commands cuz this was great & I can’t find the right commands (shocking cuz they’re the most common), in irish gaelic anywhere - there’s like one other video but it’s go commands like ‘go to the bathroom’ lol & I’m like wait, what about come, place, off, stay, shake, let go.. Like, so many they miss! & other than that one yours is the only one I found.
I’m an American (never been to Ireland but I’d love to..) & everyone here trains with German commands a) cuz their simple consonant emphasized commands are easy for dogs to learn & don’t get confused with your home language in conversation but also
    B) just cuz everyone thinks it’s cool to train their German Shepards & other ‘German’ dogs in the dogs home language as that what our military & police do & obviously since they usually have German Shepard s, b/c the dogs usually come from Germany & were already trained in German, they figure it’s easier for officers to learn a few German words than to re train the dogs in English. But like I said, all the ppl with uber cool well trained working dogs here seem to use German words in training, my trainer told me to pick some terms I liked in whatever language (also they say then only you command your dog…? Lol I guess if you never run into any other bilingual ppl), & well, a lab being a Canadian dog really could only be tied to English or I guess French. French is kind of a pain in the a** for quick concise training commands so I wasn’t very excited about that & when I was looking into what else I should use I came across that video & yours actually teaching in Gaelic & I was like, h*llss yes. 🙌🏻 maybe my dog isn’t irish heritage but I am & that’s cool. No one here speaks that language, I’ve heard hardly any irish speak in Gaelic anymore (not sure if that’s true, you should tell me if that’s wrong), & from what I could tell the commands sound just as good for that kind of thing as the German ones so why not? But like I said I can’t find hardly any pronunciations! Would love to learn more gaelic & especially more of the most commonly used training commands. Def think about posting another video! && if anyone has any links or advice to share lmk. Thx!

Thank you!!! I just told my husband yesterday that I want to get a golden retriever, name him Lad, and teach him commands in Gaelic! Got to love UA-cam. My parents immigrated from Scotland to Florida in the 1950's. You can take a girl out of Scotland but you can't take Scotland out of a girl.

Love the video. I have a German Shepard pup I am training, and didn't want to train her in English. No, not German either as EVERYONE seems to do it. Being of Scott/Irish ancestry I wanted to learn some Gaelic, and train the dog with it. Huuggee help man. I appreciate it and will be watching your videos to help me train her!

I already give similar commands in Gaelic to my dog Rudolf (but your video has helped me with some more)....and people look at me in wonder and bemusement when I do,....but then they look at me in wonder and bemusement anyway as I also always wear a kilt too when out walking Rudolf !!! You should too with your great videos.

I am trying this with my pit bull and I have only been using suidh and trobhad for two days and already she is understanding and obeying better, she's just over 2 years old. She is also a rescue and we do not know much of her past other than she os used to doing what she wants, when she wants. So, we some old habits to break, and she is doing well so far. I just hope I am pronouncing everything correctly! Thanks for the videos they are a great help!

I'm training a service dog called isla and wanted to train her in Gaelic so if people called her or told her to do something she wouldn't have a clue what their saying. I often say "Caileag mhath" to my dog - in English I would say 'Good girl' as a release from a command, or a prelude to getting the treat for a command. We had a discussion online today as to whether this was correct usage. Would you say "caileag mhath" as a short cut for "you are a good girl"?

"Come here" would be helpful if you don't mind. Also "watch the door". Thank you. I should know this being from Westmeath, but I moved to the states at 7. My Father is probable rolling in his grave.

    • @FPSIreland2
      @FPSIreland2 2 роки тому

Sorry for the late reply, you’ve probably already found out but if it means anything:
      Come here - Gabh/Tar i leith
Watch the door - Féach ar an dhoras
      Pronunciation:
Gabh i leith - gow i le (“i” as in “in”, “le” as in the french “le”)
Féach ar an dhoras - “fae-ock air on guris”

“Sit” is pronounced the same as in Scottish (but spelled slightly differently). and “good dog” is the same (again different spellings but same pronunciation)...but cú in Irish is very old fashioned, it more means “hound” rather than “dog”, a “dog” in Irish is madra (pronounced mod-ra), so madra mhaith would be used

Who said it was? Over here in Britain and Ireland, the Irish call their language, you'll never guess, "IRISH", so 'Gaelic' generally means Scottish Gaelic. I.e. _Gàidhlig_ ( _na h-Alba_ ) rather than _Gaelige_ .
