    Thank you Ron. Great video as always. Very informative and very detailed. You saved me a crap load of $$$. I had to re-apply 4 guards in the last 2 months. I always leave the end of the guard an 1/8" back from the end and add a 45 degree chamfer so it doesn't catch on anything. Still peels back. No sense in complaining. Just watched your video and fixed it. Also learned that I could re-use a guard before replacing it. The new Festool splinter guards don't stay on very well and are always peeling back (very common problem according to online forums. Love Festool but this change from the old splinter guards really irked me. I do like the opaque better than the black also. Thanks again Ron.

    Hey Ron. Your tracks are older tan mine, when , I rejuvenated my splinter guard there was no Turner’s tape. I happen to have acetone in my shop as I use it it to clean joints on Cedar before gluing. Simply cleaned the track, and actually stuck it on with the original adhesive on the tape, and rolled it down.
    I can certainly see the wisdom of using the Fastcap tape as an insurance policy.
    By the way, I have the Festool T55 cordless, it’s an absolute must have in my shop.

    Great advice. Thanks. Just saved $50! I had the Fastcap tape in my cabinet and I just cleaned everything off and reused the old chip guard. By the was Goo-gone works better than alcohol, acetone and lacquer thinner.

    Great. I was attached to the idea the guard had to be butted to the raised bit. I have a festool plunge saw bit picked up a cheap plunge saw second hand for $50. The track for the cheap saw was only a little more then the price of the SPINTER GUARD of the festool and is compatible. The Festool may be better, but not 10x better! My point is that Festool parts are outrageously expensive. I’m looking forward to applying your recycle technique. Thanks!

    I ran out of turner tape, but had some Kraftex Carpet tape and used that when building a guide for my circular saw. It worked amazingly well when attaching aluminum to slick surfaces. Test it first, it was fairly thin and it has stronger adhesion than I would have expected. Just throwing that out there. Your mileage may vary.

    When I bought my TS75 and 2 5' tracks maybe 20 years ago, ( I think those were the only sizes back then) the splinter guards were black. When I replaced them they were the opake ones, which I do like better. I didn't have any acetone either so I used KrudKutter general purpose cleaner and they've held on great. I also bought the bulk box and was floored at how much they cost. Then again, everything Festool is stupid expensive.

    A hair dryer is the best way I have found to remove the splinter gaurd residue. Simply heat track a bit then easily rub it off with your thumb. Took me 5 mintures for a 55" track.

    My go to adhesive residue remover on non-porous surfaces is coconut oil. Massage a little bit on the residue. Wait a few minutes, scrape it with a fingernail if needed, and then wipe it off. Follow with a soap and water rinse. Not as fast as acetone or lacquer thinner, but much safer and healthier.

    The Festool splinter guards on all tracks have fallen off at some point near each ends-- probably due to the heat in my Paulk like construction trailer. I've use the fastcap tape or (in a pinch) some p2-10 glue. I recently used Ron's technique to reattach one it's whole length with the dbl side tape, but I didn't notice the thicker edge Ron mentioned-- I hope I did it correctly (50/50). Thanks.

    • @aldenpines
      @aldenpines 9 місяців тому

      I'm sure that "thicker edge" is simply a result of the material melting slightly as a hot saw blade passes through it at high rpm. Some of us won't necessarily have it depending on how much we use our track saws. Ron probably uses his more than any of us watching his videos.

      Once I started using the battery saw, my corded saw never got used. I finally sold my cored saw and haven't missed it once. I also prefer the dust bag over the vac hose. It is a much more productive and useful tool being untethered.

      @@TheSmartWoodshop I'm curious if you are seeing less fine dust collected using the bag over a vacuum? Yes, I bought the Makita cordless tracksaw, and have not used the corded version since. Of course here in Scotland I've got the 110v saw which requires a heavy transformer. I couldn't find a decent dust bag from Makita, but found a good alternative in the Triton. Works a treat if you empty it regularly. So much better than lugging a vacuum and transformer around!👍

      What kind of projects do you think you want to do or at least start with Jr Gt? A few initial thoughts. If furniture making with solid wood, stick with hand tools, just a basic kit. If more DIY home projects with plywood, then invest in a very basic power kit. I like Ron’s focus on mobile tools. It really opens up options. Opt for Makita track saw (it’s a really good one step down option and just as good or better in some features) and a compact router. That will take you pretty far. If you start milling your own stock, things get much more involved. So consider sticking with options that don’t require milling,

    I can't use a track saw (or any easy to cut straight saw. Table saw. Bandsaw. Etc.) Because I only have use of my right arm. So I use a Makita circular saw (XSH03Z) with an adapter, and it's horribly sloppy. So I annihilate splinter guards all the time.
    I really wish a good left blade track saw would come out. I used to be a lefty, and now I'm obviously a righty, and you just don't know what you're missing.
    It really blows my mind seeing righties twist, stretch, cross arms, and even climb upon their workpieces with their track saws.
    I mean, just the ability to use the track saw on the side of your body where your dominant hand is, is life changing.
    If you ever see a lefty using a track saw, watch how easy it is to use a right blade.
    At this point, I'd pay $1500 for a left blade TS 75. And so would thousands of other righties.
    So many years, and Festool refuses to even consider a left blade. (Then again, they're yet to reply to me personally after 3 years of emails.)
    It's already hard being a one arm/legged woodworker... but when it takes 20-40 minutes to set up and make a single rip, it starts to break your soul.
    So Mr Paulk, I know it will fall upon deaf ears, but I'd love for anyone just to actually question the advantages of a Blade Left for righties. But people refuse to even consider it, or hear anything on the matter.
    (FYI: 1 company makes a left blade track saw, and it (like all of their items) us made horribly. I wasted a lot of money on them already. Great in theory, but horribly built.)

    • @TheSmartWoodshop
      @TheSmartWoodshop  2 роки тому +1

      Hey there. I haven't personally had to deal with a disability like you describe so it is hard to come up with a solution. It seems that having a left hand need would not be uncommon. I know for framing I can't use a side winder so a worm style is the the only option for me. For finish the left blade with track works the best, but I am right handed and setting the track on the mark is the most accurate and works very efficiently. When I am working on my next project, I will try setting up and cutting with my left only to understand your dilemma . As for the big tool manufactures , my guess is that it comes down to cost to produce and the market for it. Thanks for taking the time to bring it to my attention. We are moving so it will be a bit before I am set up for the next project, but when I do I will bring this to my viewers attention and see if others with this issue has a solution that has worked. Keep charging a head, there has to be a way. Ron 😎🤙

      @@TheSmartWoodshop I'm not going to lie Ron, I was more "venting into the void of internet anonymity and didn't expect anyone to reply. Lol.
      I'm amazed by your kindness and I appreciate it. But the reality is, that while a left blade benefits me, it also benefits all righties.
      Next time your near your worm gear saw, just set it on a table to your right. Then just imagine a track there, with the splinter guard on the left, facing you.
      It's pretty much just moving down the track in reverse.
      I use the Makita XSH03Z with their "track adapter". Its a 6-½" 18v left blade saw. (And it would be great for what I'd consider a left blade starter saw for a woodworker.) It's the best option of the thousands of wasted $'s I've put into getting straight cuts.
      I am making a face plate to cover the exposed part of the blade, but I can't figure out a way to make it "plunge" one-handed. That would take a hefty feat of engineering on my part.
      Now with that said, Many tool brands already have left blade 6-½" saws. And they have the track saws in place. So they have ability to get there.
      But that comes down to one thing I've experienced almost every time I bring it up ... the constant "It's always been this way." , "I use it just fine with a right blade, so it's for righties already." responses. And it's fair... few have never really considered it since they only had one way to do it the entire time.
      So, just know how great it is for me just to see someone really consider the concept if a left blade track saw. Divergent thought is rare for people in my experience... even for myself lol.

      Before losing my left, I never really realized how right-handed people must struggle. But like us all, we adapt. But it can always be better. So thank you again just for responding to me, and being genuinely curious.
      Apologies for writing you.a Novella here. And thank you again just for pondering it.

      Kreg?

    • @carterscustomrods
      @carterscustomrods Рік тому +1

      @J Frost I went through a nightmare with the Kreg saw.
      Long story short, It's Kreg. Expecting them to make a quality tool, let alone their only power tool, was my fault.
      They have an issue with the blade spindle. It's not aligned properly and makes the blade off by 2-3° in one direction or or the other. This makes the blade wobble and cut a thicker Kerf... which I assume most ppl don't notice due to the riving knife or lack of experience. I went through 9 of these saws, and they all had the same problem. (I bought 1, noticed it, and returned it for another. That one had the same issue returned it. This time, the Woodcraft manager and I went through every one they had in stock. They all had the same issue. I got my money back.
      Then, when a 2nd batch came out, I got a call from the Mgr saying the problem we addressed was not fixed. But Kreg claimed it was within tolerance levels.
      In reality, WEN makes a more functional saw, and it's not the same price as the Makita.
