I clear off my phone photos every week - I ask myself “will this photo matter to me in 5 years” if it won’t, I cull it.
I have literally just finished scanning all of my physical photos (lots as I’m almost 60yo) and culling/sorting my digital photos. I sorted by year, month & event - it has taken me 7 years by setting myself a daily limit so I didn’t get burnt out and broke the task down into small chunks. I now have all photos backed up to a SSD hard drive and uploaded to Google Drive so that my kids have access whenever they like. A huge job but so well worth the small chunks of time :)

@@sherylriehl1334 I set myself small limits of 15mins per day. You could easily set aside 30-60mins per day. The more you get into it, the quicker it goes because you recognise your systems. Don’t tackle every photo individually at first- I started by sorting into year folders, then month and so on. It might seem overwhelming (it did with me at first) but you’ll be surprised how quickly it all starts to take shape.

@@shanlao7301 I used a scanner for my photos - it was on my desk already setup, so was an easy option for me to sit down and use it. However I also used an app called PhotoScan for some 12x12 scrapbooking layouts (also digitised all of my scrapbooking layouts) and that worked well also :)

I’m so thrilled you interviewed Miss Freddy on this topic! I love her! Not only have I used her methods to organize and store my photos, but she has also supported my home based quilting business. So thankful for her. Now I am focused on annual maintenance of my photos. I spend a few hours once per year to do a quick tidy and I’m good to go for another year. I still need to delete some junk but I know that all the good pics and videos are safe.

I have 7 grandkids that I am doing scrapbooks for. They will get their scrapbook when they graduate from high school. I am retired now but when I worked outside the home, I got 6 years behind….on all 7 grandkids😬. Now I am playing ‘catch up’. They don’t live in the same town as I so I have to rely on their moms mainly to text me the pics. I do not do digital books. I do it the old way with regular paper and embellishments. If there is an event that involves the whole family, like a camping trip for example, I will do one layout and then make copies for the other kids. This saves me time and money. Where I live every picture I get developed costs .35 cents. So it really adds up. In December and January I spent over $100.00 just in picture development, copies, and plastic page protectors. No embellishments. I don’t regret any of it because this is my legacy to my grandkids. My albums just so you know is the 8x8 size and each grandchild will have 2 of these by the time they graduate. For Christmas or birthdays, I have the moms stage the gifts in front of the child and take 1 picture of everything they got. There is no reason to take a picture of them opening every present. I’m sorry this got so long…it’s just something I’m passionate about😊.

I do not understand the benefit of favoriting photos if that status is lost when you upload. It serves us well when sending photos from our phones, but there is no benefit once those photos are uploaded since we then have to comb through all photos again to choose those same favorites. Someone please explain to me how you all are retaining favorite status upon upload.

    • @OnlyOneName
      @OnlyOneName 2 місяці тому

@@susanshuffield8628not only you don't retain this status, but also the original date of photo taken is being replaced by the date of upload/download to/from Google drive.
What you can do is try downloading your favourite photos only as a separate folder. When you favour photos on Google drive the Favourite folder is created in the Library.
      Would that help?

I do not have children so my reality is different BUT I've been an aunt hero for 28 years. Keeping photos organized has been important to me for years. I have NOTHING stored in the Cloud. I took photo albums and CDs to our local library several afternoons in a room a couple months ago. My 27 year-old niece just visited a few days ago. She left with a flash drive I created for her of categorized and labeled photos dating back to her grandparents' wedding in 1969. She was ecstatic!!! These photos are also stored on a hard drive stored in our safe

My first post-retirement project was to scan all the photos in my photo albums. I had 2-1/2 shelves of albums, such were reduced to four shoebox-sized boxes taking up only 1/2 a shelf. Fortunately, I was always anal about dating and labeling, often down to the negative number. I’m old and don’t trust that a given digital photo will last as long as a printed photo (can’t tell you how many old discs and CDs I tossed as no longer easily readable), so I won’t ever get rid of the hard copy, just in case. Still, as attached as I am to the hard copy, I enjoy the photos - I also scanned ephemera like museum and train tickets - so much more when I can quickly find them in my computer, and share them with friends and family. But it did take a huge chunk of time that I didnt really have until I retired.

      1. Our kids want digital photos not photos in scrapbooks, so spend time labeling the photos instead of physically scrapbooking. 2. Our kids want just a few photos from each year - their friends, them and their pet, action shot of doing their activities, their school class picture, annual family photo. 3. If physically scrapbooking, document a long time period in each book (birth to age 5, 6 to 13, high school) to set a space/container limit, and include report cards, event programs, 1 sample of writing or artwork per year.

I agree with the advice about favouriting the favourite ones,
still to me it made a huge difference to delete over 20k photos from my phone.
Just the thought of having to look through 1000 junk photos to find the best ones, is still overwhelming. Not to mention that it still takes storage from your phone.
The other problem I had was that I started favouriting very deliberately, every 10th picture starting becoming a favourite...

Every year I delete 95% of my photos, but will mostly do that once a week or month.
The ones I truly love, I print out and put in a photo album.
And to make space in that photo album, I will declutter old photos.
The plan? 6 photos a year [18x6] of my child growing up and my 3 favourite yearly card/drawing/letter [18x3].
So maybe 164-ish photos in the end.
    Into 1 x A4 photo album.
And then as he continues to grow, it'll be another photo album of him and maybe grandkids.
    Same for the 2nd kid.
Plus some of the old photos from 2016 and before. Maybe one or two a year for myself and sibling. Maybe the same for my parents and maybe a few even more curated ones of my aunts, uncles, grandparents and maybe great grandparent.
Nothing online or in the cloud.
    That is it.
As for videos, I gather every few months and edit them into a long video that I store on UA-cam. Never to be lost until UA-cam dies.
I know without asking or pressuring or telling or pointing or blaming or encouraging or whatever, that the other family members will have dozens or hundreds or maybe thousands of photos of my child to look through.

My husband passed away unexpectedly in January and I'm going through his phone bit by bit (starting with deleting obvious unwanted), there are so many wonderful photos of him and our young kiddos that I hadn't even seen! The timing is perfect. I’m right in the middle of organizing 30 years of physical photos from different albums. So much work, but so fun seeing the forgotten photos. I tossed out duplicates and most of the photos of buildings, flowers, animals because I can always download better ones. The local library has a good enough scanner for me to scan and organize those into digital albums. Decluttering photos has been my favorite category!
Question for those who have done this, how do you store photos in photo boxes instead of albums - is storing them in transparent inserts the way to go? Photo Albums are so bulky.

Is there a digital solution, that is almost like a flip book, where the pictures are inserted, but there is room to write. I want to make it easy to see the words next to the picture. And I don't care about a fancy layout. Ultimately I'd love these books to be on a flash drive, not even printed.
