My Mom is a hoarder. She has refused help for years. Her famous quote is "I just need to organize everything" she spends her days sorting and "organizing" her stuff at 81 years old. A lifetime of sorting and organizing. my teenage children have never been able to have a sleep over with their grandmothers bc of "the stuff" . materialistic clutter isn't treasure, its a thief of life and joy.

My Mom is the same way (she is also 81yrs. old), but she doesn't do anything with the stuff. When I have tried to help her, she will follow me & ask me why I am doing that to her because I do complain about it. I have found stuff that my husband & I bought her several Christmas's ago to help her out, but we couldn't find it after the holidays. I now know why, she has a third bedroom that she will pile the stuff in & she forgets about it. I hate it & I know she is depressed because of all the stuff, but she will not let go of anything & because of this I will focus on my home. I don't want to live like that at all. Dawn's videos has help me a lot to stay focus & gain control of my home.

My mom is the same. 77 yrs old. But we can't even come over for dinner any more. I tell her it is stealing her joy. Her excuse is well, I don't have any storage for my stuff. I keep telling her well. If you didn't have so much stuff then you wouldn't have to worry about storing it. I worry about her all the time and all this stuff.

You're absolutely right. Sadly, when your mom is gone, you will be the one having to deal with all her stuff while you dal with your grief. I hope you have loads of siblings to help! Could it possibly be a family project to help Grandma "organize?" Even just clearing the rooms she spends the most tine in (probably kitchen, living room, and bedroom) would help a great deal and make her remaining years safer.

I’ve been a sahm 17 years and have two kids. Shopping addict untill I just couldn’t bear my house anymore. It started last year and I started minimizing- slowly, day by day. Gradually… I’m now recovered shopaholic. And my house is absolutely clutter free . My biggest gain from it is the huge amounts of time I have now! Lots of free time, no anxiety, less labour, and a wonderful sense of detachment from material stuff. It’s truly life changing.

My son just took several things to donate for me to a collection bin. I’m just giving it all away. Maybe others can use it, but I want a more simpler life. Less things in it as much as possible. Still got lots more to do.

I have said for years that the clutter is literally killing me and no one took me seriously! This video validated everything I’ve felt over the years. I know it makes me physically ill and it’s paralyzing. I feel so overwhelmed and I waist so much mental energy on the stuff. I know that it would be easier to cook if I actually knew where things were in my kitchen or at least don’t have to clear a surface just to cook. I have food clutter too. Maybe showing this video to others will help them see where I’m coming from. I’ve even asked “what’s more important? Me or the stuff, because it’s killing me.”

Take a picture of one flat surface. Do one flat surface. It might be good to clean a one foot square on the kitchen counter to start. Take a picture after it is done. Keep that spot clean everyday so you can cook from there.

I started Swedish Death Cleaning in 2018 and embraced minimalism in 2020. I gave my children anything I was not needing that they wanted and then sold, donated, Freecycled or threw out the rest. It’s a never-ending process. I am very cognizant of monitoring how much I use the things I do have and whether or not something new should enter the house.
Keeping clothing, unfinished projects and the like do send negative messages like, “You got fat,” “You are lazy,” and, “You don’t finish what you start.” I got rid of all of those things and my house is a haven to come home to.

Many years ago I managed 4 sets of dishes, one for each season. I had a full china cabinet, overstuffed. One day, in Bible study I think, the lesson was on God meeting our needs. I closed my eyes and remembered all those dishes. I thought, if I were blind ( no disrespect intended here) would it matter which set of dishes I ate off of? No, as a matter of fact a paper plate or bowl would serve me well. I, with joy gave away 3 sets of dishes and kept the plain white ones. They'd serve me fine and I could just get seasonal napkins. Thanks for this video. It's so helpful and a confirmation.

You are lovely, Dawn. There is a reason that for centuries holy men and women have taken vows of poverty: they saw material possessions as distractions from the time they had on earth to become "Perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect." The world is waking up to the need for minimalism. Minimalism is helping me be less attached to my stuff and to store up treasures in heaven, not on earth.

Store pickup makes a huge difference! I save between $20-40 a week with grocery pickup because apparently I'm an impulse shopper. I made the mistake of going into a new grocery store and I spent $60 more than usual. Now I will only do pickup for groceries. I also noticed online I'll buy random items I don't necessarily need to get free shipping. That's something I'm trying to work on. To wait until I have enough items that I actually need and get free shipping, versus looking for inexpensive random items I don't need to hit the threshold. Funny, how they price items so you'll be 3 cents short from free shipping. Last time I checked they don't sell items in that price range. 😆😆

As an older woman with same problem I would like to offer my side of the story ! As we age we have less energy to attend to wading through stuff of the past which is difficult. We are alone with our memories! We look at things and remember! Some of our family have passed away and still grieving. So there is still a lot to deal with. It needs constant help of family to work as a team to help each other. Also may I suggest that instead of gifts we donate that money to people who are in need.

My SIL’s mother died unexpectedly a few months ago. Due to dire financial needs, her dad needed to sell the house asap. Very little sold in the estate sale so they ended up putting most things in a dumpster as thrift stores only accepted a few things like books and furniture. Into the dumpster went journals, photo albums, kitchen things, clothes. Oh my, it was all so heartbreaking because her mother kept everything she ever touched and never culled out the important things. I am trying so hard to declutter down to my most favorite items because I do not want to burden my kids with an overwhelming house full of random stuff. Great video Dawn!!

so true. I started a serious decluttering journey about a month ago. A month in, I'm looking around my home thinking "Why on earth am I hanging on to THAT!. I work from home, I've become such a declutter freak, I have to discipline myself to sit down to work first, get what I need done there, then reward myself with a spurt of decluttering. And Dawn is so right when she says, small chunks make a difference. Last night, I only had time to declutter my utensils drawer, but what a difference it has made. Every day, I truly feel like I'm getting more time back. everything is just easier. The other night, after dinner, I baked a loaf of bread and made a cake. This is something I had stopped doing because I knew my kitchen would be too hard to clean afterwards and the thought of that just made me shudder. Now, I can cook with ease and I've cleaned up before it's out of the oven! Dawn, from the other side of the planet, your channel reached me and you have truly changed my life. Decluttering is SO much more satisfying then shopping!!!!! I said to my son a month ago, "isnt it nice being in a clean house?" he said "yes, but can you keep it this way? THE ANSWER IS YES!

It’s now 2:45 a.m. and I woke up an hour ago (not unusual) and started surfing UA-cam. This video and two others you have made got me out of bed with a ❤ BIG BLACK TRASH BAG ❤
My bedroom floor has been covered with “important” papers that I pulled out at tax time and started sorting. My three cats had unsorted most of the bags and boxes, so it looked worse than when I started LAST SPRING. You get the picture.
I put the iPad on the floor and listened to you and just started filling bag with trash only. Formerly buried books, checkbooks, seriously important/need to keep papers and files went on my bed. Now I am putting them in the shelves where they should live. 😊
I left piles of what-the-hell papers against the far wall because I didn’t need to get distracted.
I am thrilled to report that in under an hour I made major progress, threw out a huge bag of trash, and can now happily go back to bed knowing tomorrow I can finish sorting and tossing the rest of the papers I was afraid to even look at.
All of this in ONE HOUR. I wasn’t going to sleep anyway!

Following a divorce I had to purge tons of stuff. It nearly killed me emotionally because of the attachment of things that I identified with as my life as it was, raising my kids, as a family, as everything I had known. I moved several times after that, each time purging more and realizing I didn't need more stuff. I had just what I needed for the space I had. I can not stand clutter. Even a small pile of papers start stressing me. I am not OCD, just realized how the more simple things are, the less stressed we are. Years ago a Korean friend told me they used neutral colors throughout their home for calmness. I thought I'd try it in my bedroom and sure enough, I always felt calmer when I entered, because the decor was minimal and there were not alot of distracting colors. I eventually re-did my entire home to reflect the same. I came to the realization a long time ago that I may want something, but I might not actually need it. Wow, I’m 4:12 in, and already I’m realizing what my problem was growing up. That study basically answers my questions. All of them. I’ve been sick for years. I never slept well as a kid, I didn’t perform well in school, I didn’t make very many friends, and only as an adult, finally out of my house, did I finally get around to being able to understand the situation around me. I’ve gotten better at reading people than when I was younger and it’s led me to wonder why that is. I felt a disconnect before and now I don’t feel that.
But it all makes sense, because I grew up in a cluttered home. Both my parents became hoarders when I was younger. So it all makes perfect sense! Your videos have helped me gain control. I’m trying out your method. I can’t wait to get rid of stuff finally!

I have been watching your videos for about 3 years now. You have honestly changed my life and my relationship with my house and my stuff. I used to keep a lot “cuz you never know”. Since finding you, Dana and Cass I changed the way I think about stuff. The majority of my “stuff” I didn’t like or need. I take at least 2 trips to the donation center a month.

I can relate so much to when you said after you declutter “ I feel like there are possibilities”. For me, the mental clutter keeps me from being able to be creative, (and not to be dramatic but..) to have hopes and dreams outside of a never ending mental prison of a todo list. My mind has to have space to be free to think of things outside of lists. I was driving home last night and we were talking about something completely unrelated and I said “did I put the lunchables away??!” And my husband said he did but then my daughter said “why were you thinking about lunchables??” And I explained that my Mom brain is always thinking and planning ahead, and it made me realize that the mental to do list you were talking about is always going in my head and the less I have on it, the happier I am and the more freedom I have to do things I can enjoy. 💗

And then all the "things/gifts" we're given and feel obligated to keep them. It's just too much and gave me such panic attacks I'd start to cry and have to leave the rooms I could not deal with. Hello from Arizona! I work at a retirement center, and often see resident's apartments--the clutter, made worse by downsizing without decluttering, produces so much anxiety and causes a fall hazard! These folks are embarrassed by the mess, overwhelmed by piles of stuff on the floor, on every surface, and don't want to trouble their kids with the hassle of decluttering. I can see it is a life long lesson to live with what you can mange at every stage, or it will make life more and more difficult as we age. Thanks for getting out the message--I have learned so much from you, and I suggest watching your videos to my patients and coworkers!

I’m almost 8 months pregnant with our 8th child. We actually sold almost everything about a decade ago and moved into a travel trailer for 4 years while my husband transitioned out of the military. Now, that season was hard for many reasons but NOT because of having less stuff. For me that was SOOOOO liberating! But 6 years ago we moved into a fairly big house and have slowly been accumulating. Hitting this stage in my pregnancy and life and it’s time to do some heavy purging.
My husband is not a hoarder but he is so overwhelmed with life and work that his stuff gets away from him, making much bigger loads of clutter than he can manage. Thankfully it’s mostly confined to his office. But he’s definitely seeing the blessing in decluttering and slowly chopping away.
Since finding these practical and helpful videos I feel so much hope in regaining a sense of control in our home. It’a not even “horrible” but its too much for me. I’ve been slowly going through one space at a time (starting with “low hanging fruit spaces”) and it feels SOOOO good! We have a huge bag to donate, a pule of books, and a handful of bags in the trash. I’m so motivated to keep moving through the house and can’t wait for the final sense of peace that I know will follow.
Best part, too…all of my kids are equally as encouraged and motivated to purge and declutter their own things and spaces 🥰. It’s an all-around win!

Someone once said that procrastination is about not wanting to deal with the feelings that come up with whatever it is that we're putting off...pretty true for me. That and just not always being able to organize my brain in the right groove to mesh with organizing and eliminating "stuff." When the two meet it's great and I get a lot done, but the stars don't align often enough...however, as I eliminate more things this becomes less of a problem over time. Still a long way to go, but focusing on progress and not perfection. 👍

I'm already accumulating all of this good advice for how I want to raise any kids differently than I was raised, and just have so much less crap in the house. Good for you! And starting early/young makes it become a way of life, good habit, without the need to suffer thru the "decluttering 1,000,000 things" part 1st. Stick with it ~ it really IS the best way to live! There will be more things when you have kids, but that's ok & with places for toys & books & such to go at clean-up time, it won't become messy clutter. I taught preschoolers for many years & even 3yr olds can put things where they belong/where they got them from, if it's kept simple & is a daily routine. Adult helping put things away in right place is a good thing (they will copy what you do; try not to let 'em out of helping put toys away).😉 When clean-up is 2nd nature, makes it easier as they get older...more stuff = more to clean-up...less mess = more free time for fun stuff. (My expertise/degree ends about age 6, other than nieces, nephews.) You are off yo a great start!

When l moved from my previous home to my current home l had 12 pieces of furniture, to furnish 2 bedrooms out of 4 and a loungeroom after a massive declutter.
My new home was minimal and l hated it. I found that l need more than functional items to use. I also need items just for the beauty or story it tells, on my walls, book shelves etc.
What makes me peaceful is having sentimental items such as gifts displayed around my home.
It seems to me that the general reason men may appear to be less overwhelmed with belongings, is that 80% of housework and child rearing is still done by the Lady of the house, despite working in full time paid employment.
That is what makes a woman feel depressed, unappreciated and stuck in a rut.

  • @potluck712
    @potluck712 9 місяців тому +1

Its so DEMANDING to have to constantly organize and pull things out and organize again. Especially when you live in a small space and have to move items and organize them to a different space to make room for different items. I have watched a couple episodes of hoarders. As a stay at home mom the past 3 years there were times I wondered why it was so hard for me to make decisions on getting rid of things. It truly was hard & I’d feel guilty. I’ve never had a hoarder home, but once I watched a couple episodes I realized I have some of the same exact emotional responses and issues regarding items. Procrastinate from it being overwhelming, procrastinate out of perfectionism knowing you can’t get it all done with a toddler needing you all day lol, and then life continues and you buy more things that you don’t have room for in a tiny apartment. Still not considered even a level 1 hoarder but I realized if I don’t take charge of my environment and MAKE myself get rid of things we don’t use or wear, I’m never going to feel a sense of peace about our space. I would rather teach my child and bond with my child than have all this stuff yelling at me to tidy and get rid of it!!!

I am 69 year's young. I have spent my life organized and living with not enough stuff at times. But now my health has reached a point that it is difficult for me to even function. But I heard about "the Swedish Death Cleaning.". So I am clearing my own home out. This is my way of gifting my children a legacy of order. The things that are still valuable to me, and bring joy, remain in minimal amounts. My children can throw it all away if they want to. But it's my responsibility to clear out most of it. If you, as an individual, are not clearing out your own home at any age, your life is being owned by your stuff. I can appreciate the trama of grief and cleaning as my 90 year old Mama passed one year ago this month. She had labeled a lot of the stuff to go to specific family members, so it wasn't too bad. So I know what it's like. But for me personally, I need to get a handle on my own stuff, not leave it for someone else. I am rambling, but I am too tired, too sick and too over my "affluenza" to care about keeping my stuff. So do your own houses, and maybe it will influence the younger generation to not be hoarders.

It only took that long because I wanted to take my time and really enjoy the process of prettying it up! So an hour here and an hour there. One day all I did was put batteries in fairy lights and place them. 🙃I enjoyed it so much I've decided to take that slow approach in each room and really just show my home some love. Thanks to you I only have superficial decluttering to do now and giving each room a little refresh is so easy now! I watch a lot of home making channels here on youtube and now when I see someone post their 'new decor haul' from a store I think...better you than me! 😀 My last space to conquer is still the basement but I have made huge progress there that I think I'm ready to hang the new curtains soon! It is time for you to publish a book, bringing your hope to the page and for processing the emotions around stuff. You know exactly how women feel and you speak directly to the heart. Of course, you don’t want to end up as more stuff in people’s homes, but your words would be useful to those on the path toward a simplified home. I keep & share a playlist of my top favorite videos of yours, and it helps so much to move through the stuck-ness when I am dealing with my own clutter. Keep it up! Good job to everyone working on a simplified home.

I would encourage digital format. I listen to these videos as I declutter. "Motivational tapes" LOL.

I believe that this is the most motivational teaching/preaching video ever.
      I need to watch this one daily;
"Tell it Ike it is Dawn"

Your videos always motivate me to get out the black trash bag and start stuffing my stuff! 🤣 I have decluttered so much and miss nothing. But it is continual and I feel like I need to reboot my skills again! The biggest change was decluttering furniture and storage containers! I didn't need more storage or a bigger house. Just less stuff!

I'm only halfway through this video, and I feel like crying and shouting hallelujah! And I'm at work so that is for sure not an option.
I started your videos because I'm doing a long-distance international move, but I should have done this earlier. My stuff is killing me mentally and emotionally. But I just couldn't have. I've dealt with major trauma after major trauma for the last 13 years. I have survived all that though and now I do have the bandwidth to tackle this.
This video is giving me so much energy and life to turn the page in my life. Beautiful, thank you.

Hello. I very rarely comment but here I have to. The sentence "You are worth more than the stuff" made my teared. It is soooo relieving hear that and get the permission to kick the stuff out... (I do not know how to better describe it). I have been watching your videos for a long time now and to be honest, as a full time mom, The Minimal Mum videos are my few minutes of "me time" and recharging time. Thank you

Your speech is a revelation to me. Wow. Suddenly this decluttering concept makes sense to me. Thank you so much.

😢❤Oh Dawn, what would we do without you! This was like a therapeutic conversation with a dear friend or sister. I’m currently going through all of my belongings. It’s a long overdue journey, and fighting all of the messages and memories attached to things is a really difficult but necessary part of it. Thank you for your videos and encouragement!

My mother in law sadly passed away 2 years ago. She was such a hoarder and bought new clothes literally every week. Seeing her life all in bags was so sad . It made me think about all of my stuff and if I was to pass away suddenly what would happen.
My aunt is currently in her last days of life with terminal cancer. She was young and full of fun. She too had a shopping addiction and her house is full to the brim. Her condition has made me declutter my life and make changes.
I am ocd with mess. I am always sorting and tidying. My house is so small but very tidy even though full to the brim. I have a serious addiction to buying online. But in September I promised myself I would think very seriously before any purchase made. I've let go of really expensive items to charity and friends. Even a brand new pair of boots that cost 100s with the labels. I still have a long way to go. But I really do find i have far too much stuff. It really stresses me out. I have 3 daughters, which i homeschool the younger 2 and they have alot of stuff too. I am laying the foundations with them young . We will do a clear out in their toys throughout the days of christmas holidays. Books is and soft teddies is major with them
