This musical number is good and catchy I’ll admit that. But the lyrics and gaslight and misleading. I know it’s not Corney Collin’s fault as he’s a nice guy. It’s the fault of Amber and her mother who run the show but are mean and prejudice based on race and looks.

I agree strongly, with the exception of your poor take on No Country For Old Men, widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, and incredibly deep for the portrayal of a villain who seems to appear as an unstoppable portent of death whilst also being innately fair, in the form of Anton Chigurr. Hairspray is pretty rad, though.
@@LadyoftheLab poor take? Nope. NCfoM is a masterpiece but it doesn't have the poignancy that Hairspray overall achieves in themes, scope and ambition. NCfoM is introvert and Hairspray is extrovert, let's say. Therefore, Hairspray's ambitions are to reach as much people as they can with their message, while NCfoM is basically reflective and therefore one has to dig into it. Obviously I think Hairspray is the most important film out of both (and actually the best, as it is also an instant genre landmark)
@@cifratv It is worth acknowledging my own biases here - I much prefer NCFOM, which is obviously obvious. I disagree that having to read deeper into the film makes it inherently worse than Hairspray, because they talk about very different issues - Hairspray tells an obvious-in-hindsight point about segregation and bigotry, which, while undeniably important issues to speak about, and done in a landmark fashion, are still sort of common issues to speak of (the idea of speaking about them isn't groundbreaking in and of itself, and no racist is going to watch Hairspray and come out not still being a racist). NCFOM's depth exists because the film isn't just the surface-level narrative. It asks questions, and is food for a great deal of thought. It asks you, the audience member, about the nature of evil - Hairspray does not ask, it tells you the nature of its key evils. Whilst it does achieve the stated goal (reaching as many people as it can with the message it has), it won't be remembered for its message as much as it will be remembered for being a great time to watch. It's true, however, that cinema does not need to be challenging or revolutionary, and indeed Hairspray is one of the greatest musicals of all time. But to claim, as you did earlier, that it is 'deeper' than NCFOM, is a complete mistake. There is no depth in Hairspray - it tells you exactly what it wants you to hear. There is no "deeper" to go.
+vanillefantaa 1.0 She's actuaully right. Not by calling Tyra a stupid bitch but the girl is obviously black and the show is obviously racist. As a black woman myself I would only watch the show after it had been integrated and the theme song had been rewritten.
Have you people forgotten the end to the movie?! It gets blacks people on it and obviously they rewrite the song. I think what Tura means shed watch the show because it changed at the end of the movie. Yeesh people it's not nice to call people "bitches".
Greta No one's forgotten but that is why they were calling her out of her name. Which is why I said I would only watch if AFTER it had been integrated.
I always had this thought: How did Link, Amber and all the kids who were in the show get to the station early, if they were in the same class as Tracy?
All of the episodes were live, one of the girls even said so when Tracey went to audition, it's a line in "Miss Baltimore Crabs" "are you scared we're on live?" "No I'm sure I can cope" "Well this show isn't broadcast in cinema scope!" They got to leave early, there's a scene at the end of "I can hear the bells" that shows all the Nicest Kids getting on a bus while Tracey looks from her last class

It also makes sense for the fact that, at least in the version of the play that I did in high school (I played Corny Collins btw), Brenda had to take and "unexpected leave of abscence" for, take a guess, it's 9 months. Gee, I wonder what that could mean. Brenda's voice definitely sounds like the kind of character who would do that.

And I'm the man who keeps it spinnin' round Mr. Corny Collins With the latest, greatest Baltimore sound! So every afternoon Drop everything (Bop-bee-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba, bee-ba) Who needs to read and write When you can dance and sing? So, if every night you're shaking As you lie in bed (Mony-mony, ooh, mony-mony) And the bass and drums Are pounding in your head (Mony-mony, ooh, mony-mony) Who cares about sleep When you can snooze in School? They'll never get to college But they sure look cool Don't need a cap and a gown 'Cause they're the nicest Kids in town They're the nicest, nicest They're the nicest, nicest They're the sugar 'n spicest The nicest kids in... Really? I thought John Travolta might be a bit too old to play Link.
Why couldn’t they just get an actual female I don’t understand
Raven Smallwood its tradition for the role to be played by a man in drag
@@jeroencusters4463 Wow, really? That's super cool!
lost it at "tryin to ourn here"
'Tryin' to iron here.'
Sorry if you knew that, I just couldn't resist.
i deliberately misspelled it
Oh, alright. Ignore me.
Veronica Bennie 🤦🏻♀️
Veronica Bennie dumbass
3:20 I'm in love 😍
3:20 Corny dancing better than all the teenagers!!! James Marsden kills it!!! Who would think X-Men's Cyclops could dance and sing
Have you not seen enchanted. He sings in that 😊
@@ashleigh20_04 yes I have. He is amazing
Fabio Vaz yes he is. That’s the movie I fell in love in with him. His too good 💗
James’ voice is everything. 😭💯♥️
So true! We teen girls never ever missed the daily American Bandstand show so we could learn all the new dances from the "regulars." Great times.
And im... (Insane hand movements) LINK!
I died at this😂
MAH BOI
3:13 SHAKE IT BABY
This is song is just dripping with satire, but disguised as a jumpy tune. Love it.
3:20 I’m obsessed with this dance move
james marsden is such a babe
Thank you
Finally someone talked about James
"My mom says I'm not allowed to perspire" lol poor abused penny!
***** sweat
It means she can't be healthy😦you need sweat once and a while to be healthy
I love Hairspray, but I'm mainly here for James Marsden/Corny Collins. My intention was to watch it once, but ended up watching it seven or eight times...
Ok but “Brenda” is a different bread. Her voice just 😂
b r e n d a
He is brazilian.
Lyrics 🤣
Hey there, teenage Baltimore!
Don't change that channel!
'Cause it's time for the Corny Collins Show!
Brought to you by
Ultra Clutch Hairspray!
Oh
Every afternoon
When the clock strikes four
(Bop-bee-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba, bee-ba)
A crazy bunch of kids
Crash through that door yeah
(Bop-bee-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba, bee-ba)
They throw off their coats
And leave the squares behind
And then they shake it, shake it, shake it
Like they're losing their mind
You'll never see them frown
'Cause they're the nicest kids in town
Every afternoon
You turn your T.V. on
(Na, na, na, na, na, na-na-na-na)
And we know you turn the sound up
When your parents are gone yeah
(Na, na, na, na, na, na-na-na-na)
And then you twist and shout
For your favorite star
And once you've practiced every step
That's in your repertoire
You better come on down
And meet the nicest kids in town
Nice white kids
Who like to lead the way
And once a month
We have our "Negro day!"
And I'm the man who keeps it spinnin' round
Mr. Corny Collins
With the latest, greatest Baltimore sound!
So every afternoon
Drop everything
(Bop-bee-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba, bee-ba)
Who needs to read and write
When you can dance and sing?
(bop-bee-ba, ba-ba-ba-ba, bee-ba)
Forget about your algebra
And calculus
You can always do your homework
On the morning bus
Can't tell a verb from a noun
They're the nicest kids in town
Roll call!
I'm Amber!
Brad!
Tammy!
Fender!
Brenda!
Sketch!
Shelley!
I.Q.!
Lou Ann!
Joey!
Mickey!
Becky!
Jesse!
Carla!
Polly!
Maureen!
Doreen!
And I'm...Link!
So, if every night you're shaking
As you lie in bed
(Mony-mony, ooh, mony-mony)
And the bass and drums
Are pounding in your head
(Mony-mony, ooh, mony-mony)
Who cares about sleep
When you can snooze in
School?
They'll never get to college
But they sure look cool
Don't need a cap and a gown
'Cause they're the nicest
Kids in town
They're the nicest, nicest
They're the nicest, nicest
They're the sugar 'n spicest
The nicest kids in...
Kids in town

Marsden's Corny is never appreciated for how good it was.
I'd rush home from school to watch this show too if James Marsden was the host. I love this movie and I love when he says "shake it baby" lol.
3:06 zac killed that move!!!!
"My mom says I'm not allowed to perspire." LOL I just love those lines you can easily miss. Oh Penny/Amanda! :)

I remember specifically memorizing all the names in the roll call scene, and THAT'S IT. I memorized the beat, the way each one said it, and their little action. I'll never forget how obsessed I was lmfaooo 💀
Watched it three times- addictive enthusiasm, tune, lyrics, choreography and JAMES!
I love how Zac Efron was supposed to be the teenage heartthrob, but it is CLEAR from the comments that everyone is in love with James Marsden MYSELF INCLUDED
It's great to see you're enjoying a clip from "Hairspray"! That movie is such a vibrant and energetic celebration of music, dance, and the spirit of the 60s. It's always inspiring to see how art and entertainment can bring joy and spread positive messages. Keep enjoying those catchy tunes and uplifting scenes! 😊🎶🕺💃
Thanks chatgpt
“They must think my ears are garbage cans… WILL YOU TURN THAT RACKET DOWN!? I’m tryina iron here” loved her entrance 😂
James Marsden is one of the best singers in this movie and that’s just facts
Zac Efron looks like he’s really enjoying himself, he should do more musicals.
