Hey there! If you are new around here my name is Hannah Martin and I am currently a full time professional ballet dancer. On this channel I love to share my journey, the tips and tricks I've learnt along the way, and help motivate you all on your path towards your dreams! If you enjoyed this video I really hope you would consider liking this video and clicking that subscribe button to become part of our motivating community! :)
And most importantly,
Dream Big,
Make it Happen!
Please realize that recovery from something like this is not just physical, there is definitely a mental health component in the healing!
She’s been through this exact surgery before already and spoken on this exact topic during her last recovery.
Very very true! Thank you :)
Yes, I feel the two surgeries have been mentally challenging in such different ways. My experience this time feels like a whole different story to my last.
Last September I was hit by a car and spent a couple weeks in the hospital and a few more learning to walk again. I think the biggest turning point in my recovery is when I decided that I wasn't injured anymore. Don't get me wrong, things still hurt. But I decided that I was no longer going to allow my accident to have any power over me. I would no longer use it as an excuse, and I wouldn't allow any thoughts of self-pity to creep in. What a huge difference that made! I finally retook ownership over my body and felt much more in control of my recovery. I am so happy that you have made a similar decision.
It is difficult, but you (we) will both get back again!
I have had a similar experience. There is that moment where you have to realise that you are not trying to get back to your old body, but rather embrace the new one that you have and make it work to the best you are able to at that time.
As an ex pro athlete, I feel you! There's NOTHING restful about being off with an injury. It's just loaded with stress and worry, not to mention how much you miss being able to move your body properly and express yourself to music. It's something we learn that releases stress in our lives!
For me, when I stepped out onto the ice, I'd just leave my life worries behind and be in the moment. When we don't have it, the stresses just build up on us, and there's nothing to do but sit and think (and worry about the injury), even when we try not to.
I hope you're turning the corner now, and that things start to improve quickly for you.
I'm thinking of you! 💖💖🏴⛸️
This is really true and a great point. Dancing or ice skating is kind of like going into a different world for a while. What is crazy is sometimes when I'm in it, all I want is a short break, but then when I am not there all I want is to be back! Navigating life and emotions is a whole challenge that we face every single day! A constant learning experience!
I am so proud of you! I am not a dancer. I have zero talent. I watch you because you inspire me in other areas of my life. You are a strong person. Thank you for your honesty and transparency. Because of you, I know that I am able to push through.
thank you! that means a lot!
I admire your determination Hannah! I know you will heal stronger than ever! Thank you for sharing your journey!😊🫢
Thank you so much!!
If you're weight bearing in pain, it's too soon! Looking at your MRI, your Os Trigonum was connected to the talus, so it was much more traumatic operation than the one one the left where the OT was in fragments. There will be much more inflammation this time, and any fluid in such small joint spaces will give you pain and a dysfunctional ankle, foot and all the way up the kinetic chain, hence the knee problem. Ice with elevation, nose above toes! You need to have a week in the sun to recover. Sorry to nag again, but having gone through a very similar procedure, the body has it's own timetable of recovery and won't be rushed. Unlike me (70) you are you are young and a little extra time will pay dividends in the long run. After six months and eventually listening to my body I am back in the studio and happily pirouetting and very cautiously jumping, so take heart you will get better but listen to your body, it knows best.
She’s very well taken care of by her doctors and medical team. I’m sure she’s doing exactly what she’s being told and is in touch regularly with her medical team.
@@gloriouslyimperfectIt would be physio and occupational therapy and even like a mental health therapist who are more important during this recovery period rather than her surgeon or GP though. Wonder if a proper sports medicine doctor is involved?
I can’t imagine her physio is advising her to do frequent high rep exercises at this point which are causing significant pain since that would cause more inflammation and possibly even an overuse injury of the foot that is injured.
Agreed. She isn't really handling this situation well at all. Very negative self talk, very negative about healing.
This looks like a recipe for disaster
Thank you so much for your advice. I honestly found it helpful to remember that my body has had surgery. Sometimes I just think its an injury and forget that the way you deal with surgery is very different because your whole body is effected in a very specific way. I am so inspired by your story, I know that I will be back on the pointe shoes very soon :)
Wishing you the best! Don't forget that when it comes to feeling down, it can be for "no reason" other than the neurofeedback of not getting the same amount of exercise you used to. Your body had to majorly adjust to changes in endorphins, adrenaline, etc. And athletes have different mitochondria makeup that is expecting a higher amount of exertion. Literally your brain has been depressed without all those regular chemicals flooding in, and you've had to create other pathways to create dopamine and positivity. Of course you're mentally drained!
Sending love. xo
This is really relevant for me. I use exercise to de stress a lot of the time and not having this physical release really does effect the way I feel mentally. It is crazy how our bodies work!!
"Sometimes being back feels so far away and it is hard to accept the limits you body sets on you each day." So, so true! I'm not a professional, but I also am a ballerina going through injury recovery. I did not have to have surgery, but there was a point when I couldn't walk normally and was in a large amount of pain. I am technically "back" now, (today, actually!!!🤭) but definitely still healing. Being back floated like a phantom in front of me and there were times (there still are) that I couldn't help wondering if I would ever be better. You will get back, Hannah, and you will look over this whole experience and see how you came through stronger than you were before.
I don't think that people who haven't gone through something like this can understand how mentally hard it is! I really appreciate your videos, Hannah. Thank you for being so open and honest and real. Not that I would wish injury on anyone, but it is SO reassuring that other people feel like I felt/feel.
Ecclesiastes 3:11- He has made everything beautiful in its time.🙏🙏
Hannah, your so strong. Your going to get through this. And once your done with this surgery journey you’ll look back and realize it made you stronger.
Lots of love from Sweden❤
Thank you so much :)
Thank you for sharing your recovery journey. I have been in the same situation so many times as a dancer and it is extremely relatable. The mental aspect of recovery is definitely way harder than the physical in my opinion. Good luck on the rest of your recovery and your transition back into dancing ❤️
Thank you for sharing! Recovery I think is definitely more mentally challenging then physically!
Is my uni. psychology lectures, they would me tion the importance of feeling the emotions. When we ”don’t feel our emotions”, we push them ahead of us, and creating a longer process of pain and discomfort (emotions don’t go away because we actively try to avoid them. Instead it will raise up our cortisol levels (the stress hormon), the more we do that the more it travels and becomes physical (injuries, health issues internally and so on).
It can in a way be compared to slapping a plaster on a wound but never clean the wound, so the wound never closes and will become infected. Had it been cleaned out, it would have healed within a week.
Not feeling will make it tougher even if it might feel scary to feel emotional pain and frustration. Often times people feel it’s not as tough to experience their emotional pain, as it is to avoid it and fear the pain and build it up to be bigger than it it.
Crying is not a weakness. When else are we suppose to cry, if we tell ourselves to hold it in even when there is a struggle?
Please be gentle to yourself❤
This comment was such a comfort to me. Thank you so much for sharing it :)
Hi Hannah! 💕 you are so strong remember that!!!! I got knee surgery that took me out of dance for 8 months and I can relate to everything u said!!! Every 100% looks different depending on the day!💕 Mental health is the same as physical health, I never thought I should go to therapy with these struggles but then I made this choice and everything was much easier - many psychologists take care of athletes (sport psychology therapists) - as dance is an art form that connects body and soul 💕 Saying that I want to say to remember that you are not alone 💕!!!!!!
SENDING SO MUCH LOVE! YOU GOT THIS 💕
Consistency is the key, not speed. But you know that of course. I've had a few physical set backs in my life: the value I gained was always emotional, mental and spiritual fortitude. I also think gratitude and some degree of humility has helped me to put things in perspective. I had a spinal chord injury 2 years ago. I'm ok but nothing is completely the same afterwards. Physically I have become a lot more aware of my limits and vulnerabilities but mentally I have become tougher and more patient. Your brave example on how you handle challenges and recovery is an inspiration to all of us! I know you will come out the other side an even more remarkable dancer. Thank you 💖
Thank you so much for sharing your words of wisdom! It is amazing how when our physical ability is taken away how much we have to grow mentally :)
I am not a ballerina but I have had 3 major foot surgeries and had to learn how to work. Physical therapy is soooo hard. I spent so much time in tears. I am praying for you as you recover and get back where you would like to be. God is good and is with you.
thank you so much. Recovery is tough but God is so good, you are right! His mercies endure forever! :)
1. Persistent pain is exhausting.
2. Recovery is not a strait path. You will improve slowly and incrementally.
3. Hang in there, soon you will be back and better❤
thank you so much for these important reminders :)
🫢 Great video! Thanks for the update. I'm glad your ankle is coming along and I'm glad you're not pushing yourself too much.
I’m so happy my daughter and I found your channel. She is 11 and a 2 time gymnastics state champion and regional champion. She is transitioning into ballet. There aren’t enough hours in the day for both, not anymore. She still does gymnastics 2x / week but concentrates on ballet 4x / week. Thank you for your content, you inspire us both to be better.
Thank you! Wishing your daughter so much strength on her transition and journey in ballet :)
I am not a ballerina but I have had 3 major foot surgeries and had to learn how to walk each time. It took so long. Physical therapy is soooo hard. I spent so much time in tears. I was absolutely exhausted. All the “rest” in the world following surgery is actually exhausting. I am praying for you as you recover and get back where you would like to be. God is good and is with you.
Hang in there. You have that athletic mindset engraved in your brain that will help motivate you through the hardest parts of recovery. You will pull through and be glad you did it so well. ABBA is our strength when you have none left. ❤
Thank you, and amen! I need to always remember that He is ultimately in control!
Nobody who takes time off work for sickness or injury comes back feeling rested especially if they're not completely better yet so that's normal! Also I can't even imagine doing that many calf raises but I'm not a pro dancer 😅 Good luck, stay motivated, you're smashing it ❤
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for sharing your surgery experience. I also dance ballet and had surgery a week ago. My current experience is really painful both physically and mentally. But I also want to try to get back where I left off. I am a little worried that I might not be able to dance the way I did before. But seeing you going through something similar makes me feel less alone and right now that really means a lot to me. I wish you good luck on your journey with recovery and hope you will have a nice year 2025!
We are in this together! Surgery is so tough, one of the hardest things to go through as a dancer in my opinion, but once we get to the other side we have a whole new appreciation for our bodies and what they can do :)
@HannahMartinRG thank you! ❤
Hannah you are amazing and an inspiration to many! Happy new year ❤

🫢 Love you, Hannah. You're such an inspiration, especially in the hard things. Merry Christmas and happy new year to you and all your family and friends 🧡 Thank you for all the wonderful content xoxo

Hi I'm new here. Love your videos❤️ I just want to thank you for sharing your experience. Although I'm not a dancer, so I can't fully understand, but I definitely understand how difficult it is to come back after a break. I missed school because of health problems. Coming back was a lot harder than I thought. But I'm just trying to be patient and take it one step at a time. This video makes me feel less alone. Small steps a still progress. It's not the speed that matters, it's the love you give to yourself on the way there. You may not be were you want to be but you are closer then you were yesterday. Celebrate every bit of your progress. You doing amazing and I'm so proud of you. Sending you all my love, my support, the best vibes and the warmest virtual hug 🫂💗
thank you so much! also for sharing your own experience. We can do this!
So glad you're feeling more positive. Is there a sports psychologist at BRB? Situational depression is real, and therapy definitely helps. I hope you had a lovely Christmas! And remember, healing/recovery isn't linear, so while you had a great day before heading home, don't be discouraged if (when) setbacks occur! Your body is your instrument, and your vessel in this life--make sure you listen to it, and give it rest when it asks for it. Best wishes for your continued recovery! 🤭😯
Thank you so much Ivy! I totally agree that the mental side is way harder than even the physical. I work with an injury mentor called Frances Collier, she is amazing! I really couldn't have done this without her :)
Girl, I know it doesn't always feel like it, but you are seriously doing so amazing. You should be proud of all the work you are putting in. Doing PT and retraining your strength back is honestly so boring and such an ego blow at times. But you should be so proud of yourself for continuing on. Keep at it,you got this 💪.
Also, it's totally fine and understandable that you feel tired and emotional. It's a long, tiring process. ❤
thank you so much for you support, it means a lot :)
🫢 great to know that things are looking up for you, both mentally and physically. I am sure 2025 will be amazing, with your attitude (no ballet pun intended 😄). Thanks for sharing another vlog 🥰
thank you so much :)
Be good, kind, and patient with yourself, sister. I know that can be hard to do and I need to take my own advice. I just found your channel today, definitely a new subscriber.
thank you so much :) and welcome! thank you for joining the motivating community!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Hannah!! Morning by morning new mercies you see. All things are possible to those who believe. We love you and God loves you. 💕✝️🌟
Happy new year!! and Amen!
Well done. Happy new year. Keep dreaming big. I'm not recovering from surgery but also think I share the struggle of staying focused and motivated during the winter months. I can't remember if your last surgery was at the same time of year but definitely think longer days will help us all to get back to being more driven and positive. Roll on springtime.
It was actually! I had my surgery one month earlier in the year, but it certainly is cold and that's hard when you aren't able to move as much. Bring on the summer!
Thoughts as I was watching…I was wondering if part of the sadness/grief is from losing your buddy Reagan. Glad to hear you have a new flatmate. I was going to suggest getting something to take care of like a cat, but I don’t know if that’s even allowed. Also, I’m just curious if they offer a medical physical? I’m wondering what your bloodwork looks like. Make sure to hydrate and treat yourself to a “Hannah açaí bowl”. Good job on worshiping and being thankful! Have you heard of dry brushing? That could help with any swelling.?We are all SO proud of you! You will get through this. Keep dreaming big!!! Happy New year Hannah. Praying for you. 🤭
Thank you so much! Yes, we had our bloods done at the company earlier in the year and also quite recently. we should receive the results soon. Regan leaving has definitely taken an emotional toll. We still message each other almost every day :)
People often say "I shoudl not complain" and yes there are always someone who might have it worse, or good things to be greatful for. But I think its important to let yourself fell what you feel and not hit yourself in the head for it. Yes dont let youself be consumed by all the bad, but allow yourself to feel it.
Good luck with everything, and lots of love from Denmark🥰 (going through rehab and such myself due to knee injury)
thank you so much. Sending so much strength for your rehab :)
🤭keep going Hannah! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Thank you! You too!
🤭Looking forward to the Christmas vlog! You are doing great with your process!! And no pressure to answer fast, I honestly wonder where you find the time to answer :):) Take care!! I really enjoyed it and will pick some exercises when the time of my own rehab comes!
Thank you so much!!

thank you!
@ Younare very welcome…How are you feeling?

Great progress, well done, Hannah 💖
Thanks so much! 😊
I am a 5th year adult student and this past summer I turned 40 and I must tell you. I workout 3 to 4 days a week in the gym and take 4 to 5 dance classes a week and I must say as I get older it does take me longer to recover.
It is true, even 2 years on from my last surgery my body feels more of the wear and tear. It just reminds me that I need to respect it.
🤭 I know how hard it is to be injured and having to take so much time to return to dancing. I broke a bone in my foot while training for amateur salsa competitions. It was completely devastating but I can say that was one of the biggest growth periods of my entire life. And the rehab process inspired me to pursue a new career in what I had learned. It felt like eons to heal and come back but I'm so glad I took more than the recommended time to fully return.

I actually think you are doing very well. Not necessarily what you want to hear but every surgery is different and it seems to me you are definitely progressing. You are still so young and want things to happen now. That’s often not how it works and as you grow older you will look back and realize it happened quicker than you thought in the moment. You are doing amazing and need to just listen to your body. You will be back but on your body’s timeline not your mind’s. Wishing you all the best. ❤
So true! Thank you for this reminder to be patient and appreciate everything that my body is giving me each day - even if it's not quite everything that I want it to be able to do.
Hannah, you are such a beautiful person inside and out. I love how you incorporate God in every aspect of your life. You spread positivity, self-love, kindness, and joy each time you post your videos.
Your dancing talent is absolutely gorgeous! I love your channel because you don't just focus on your dancing, you allow your audience to see your real life and everything that happens in between. Keep being amazing Hannah!

I am going through a similar process with my shoulder after shoulder surgery. I am wondering how are you recovering do you ever feel better?
Its funny how you can feel the same after taking a long hideous from dance and ballet. As dancers we are so in tune with what our bodies can achieve that when they don't do everything we expect it feels like a problem, like your are not yourself and to feel let down. Keep being understanding and patient with yourself, you are doing so well. Days of rest are just as productive as days filled with recovery training.
@@alia3784 thank you so much for sharing this 🙏
It's great to see your progress post-surgery. I'm wondering, does BRB have a training staff like a professional sports team, or do you wrap your own ankle? (I think you call them physios over there in the UK, we call them trainers in the U.S.) Do you also feel like you're experiencing DOMS after some increased training and PT as you work your way back to dance form? I know I feel that way when I try to pick back up my yoga practice after several weeks off, and I feel sore while I'm carrying mail for the USPS.
🤫
@@ericvansickle4305 yes! I have a physio I work with at the company! She is lovely.
And yes yes yes to DOMS they were really bad in the first few weeks back into training!
I think your mentality was worse this time around because you had to do this once before, and I imagine that the holiday season made your mindset worse because you know the schedule they are facing this time of year. I notice when I face the same things over and over again, my mindset does get worse because I know what to expect, so taking the pressure off yourself will help but also do some journaling if you need to let go of things but you don't want to forget them, sometimes it is best to just get it off our chest. I hope your recovery continues to go well!
@@jennifersnell3488 it’s so true that facing this a second time round makes it easier in some ways but actually a lot harder in others. I’ve tried not to compare as much as I did at the beginning of recovery. I found myself saying “but last time….” Way too many times! Now I’m just like- this is where I am and approaching it like it was a new situation but with the privilege of experience.
These days because surgery is done as a day case. We minimise it. An anaesthetic has an after life. You've had surgery it takes time to heal both physically and mentally. Muscles forget really quickly. Keep at it, I listen to podcasts and music

I don't know if any of these apply to you but I wanted to mention this!
General FYI about medications including painkillers, muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety, anti-depressants, and sleeping pills:
Common side effects may include:
1. Mental fog (inability to concentrate, memory problems, less creativity for people who are used to having lots of creativity).
2. Digestive upsets including nausea, diarrhea, constipation.
3. Sleep problems.
4. Skin problems. This is one that is not often listed but when our normal body functions have been disrupted, all of our systems go haywire. The resulting stress can cause a variety of skin problems like acne, rashes, psoriasis, etc. Most of these are fairly easily treated but they are yet another challenge we did not need!
(Check each medication's list of side effects available from the pharmacy or online.)
Hope this helps!! 🙏🫢🤩🫶💪
Thank you so much for this! I was on quite a high dosage of anti inflammatories for 6 weeks post surgery. It took me about 2 weeks to actually feel the difference in my energy levels, but I definitely feel much more energised now that I am off of them!
@@HannahMartinRG i'm so glad that this information was helpful!
Another one that is unlikely to affect you if you just have meds for a short time and are otherwise healthy - but it applies to people who take daily medication which has the side effect "dry mouth." This is a very common side effect.
My dentist told me that (sorry as this may sound gross) but our "teeth should be bathed in saliva."
When they aren't, this leads to rapid decay. The last thing anybody needs is time in the dentist's chair and big dentist bills!
Flossing and brushing after eating or drinking anything other than water are very important but this can be a real challenge for people who are physically challenged and/or become easily nauseated.
I use an extra strength fluoride toothpaste (Prevident) for which I have to ask the pharmacist. There are also other means of dealing with dry mouth like extra strength fluoride mouthwash and even fluoride gel + trays.
What's worrisome is that I've never met another chronic pain patient whose dentist has told them about dry mouth!
I had written another comment on this video but it is not showing up. Let me try it again!
@@HannahMartinRG your video really helped me a lot!
Thank you very much for having the courage to articulate what it's like to be in pain.
It helped me a lot to be reminded how the effects affect every aspect of life.
It's also a very helpful description for people without this experience to understand your ordeal.
It goes sooooooo far beyond the physical.
Trying to maintain a good mood or any kind of positive outlook is a constant struggle.
I was so proud of you when you said you had woken up with pain but YOU DECIDED that it was going to be a good day!!
The negative thoughts we have at times like these are, to a large extent, because our brain chemistry isn't working properly. Negative thoughts are very good at creating more negative thoughts and thus we end up in a vicious cycle.
"Physical pain and depression have a deeper biological connection than simple cause and effect; the neurotransmitters that influence both pain and mood are serotonin and norepinephrine. Dysregulation of these transmitters is linked to both depression and pain."
So do we have to accept these negative thoughts?
Do we have to take them seriously?
Are they an accurate reflection of what is going on?
No, no, no!
I choose to reject the thoughts that "dysregulation of these transmitters" are giving me! You can choose this, too!
Remember:
1. "Night changes many thoughts." -Aragorn, "Lord of the Rings"
2. An empty stomach breeds imagination." -PG Wodehouse, "Piccadilly Jim"
3. The list of cognitive distortions!
Thank you very much for your efforts in continuing the vlogging despite your many challenges! 🫢

Another thing you can be grateful for is that you have the money to afford a proper surgery to fix your ankles! How much more beautiful and joyful will you be when your dancing is uninhibited! Taking your time is the right way and you’re putting in the time and the right kind of work and it’s gonna be so great! 😊💖🩰 after a mission trip to Haiti a few years back, I am so much more grateful for my living situation here in the US.. one of the peasants, I may be, but I have hot showers pumped into my home instead of hauling a cold bucket of water to the shower and using a cup to cleanse… I have a machine that washes my clothes for me and another that dries them if only I remember to switch over the load! It’s not going to be the same as it was prior to injury. It’s going to take a lot of rehabilitation and time to restore full range of movement and it may now always have certain weaknesses which no matter how hard you try you can’t do anything about, but that doesn’t mean you should give up.
