Thank you for this video. I have been looking for a way to utilize my DPS-750RB without any luck. You are the first one that provided the correct resistor value (470ohms) to allow my units to operate properly. Keep up the good work.

I didn't mention it in the video, but the auto-start modification works by using the 5V standby line (pin 32) to charge te 100uF cap via the 470ohm resistor. This provides the necessary time delay before the charge is sufficient to tun on the NPN transistor and the supply.

I have been modding the supplies for a long time and I've never heard anything about this time delay requirement??? There is also nothing in the official datasheet about this. I'm not sure where OP got his info but this isn't the correct way to power on this unit. The normal 470ohm resistor between pin 1 and 4 is also not spec, but works okay for some models.
The proper, manufacturer designed method is:
1: Tie pin 1 (left-most pin on top side) to ground.
2: Connect pin 4 to +12v through a 21k resistor (the 200mA +12v standby is always on with power cable attached. Probe the top pins to locate it). You can also add a power switch in that line if you need one.
3: That's all! Output is a steady 12.23V on every one I've used and it will not drop much, if any with heavy load! This is one of the most well regulated, and highest performance 12v supply I know of. I make heavy use of these for all kinds of things including my 24/7 high power servers for which they were originally designed.
NOTE: I like to add an LED from pin 3 to 1 that will light when output is activated.
Also, these units get very hot at high loads (or even no load) because the fan runs at near silent most all the time. They are designed to run inside a server with 6x 200CFM Delta fans blasting air into them. To fix this, you can mod the internals in various ways or, what I am working on right now, connect over I2C to the PMBUS interface and send commands as needed to monitor/set the speeds/temps. Ill be posting a guide online once I get time
UPDATE: I have two different types of the official breakout boards for these supplies. Both are designed differently, both wrong according to official datasheet, yet both work. However, I have noticed the onboard fan speed control acts differently between all these methods. My method (the official one) has a very smooth/fast increase in fan speed as needed in relation to internal heat. The others seem slow to respond and on some versions of this PSU, the fan never changes even at full load. Because of this, I strongly suggest using only this official method and avoid the breakout boards on eBay/Amazon as they use VERY poor designs (direct shorting of many unreated pins. Insufficient copper to handle full loading)

21K resistor but what watt? I have noticed that a lot people list resistors and leave off the watts. Do you have a video of your method? Thanks, Todd.

    • @EricDenny
      @EricDenny 5 років тому

no video, sorry. It's on my long to-do list tho. The official datasheet doesn't specify watts of the 21k. Probably because it's very minimal with no real current passing through this sense line. I just use whatever 20k-22k resisters I can find in my scrap pile and it works.

I have a question, when you plug the device into the outlet, does the fan turn on immediately, or only when you connect the resistor. Because mine turns on immediately, and when I insert the resistor, 12 volts appears on the terminals and the fan turns on at a much higher speed. Also my power supply doesn't need the whole transistor thing, the soldered resistor works and it's the exact same model

when i did my power supply, i just adjusted the internal regulator , after breaking the over voltage pin on the circuit, but soldering it i ended up cutting my soldering iron tip to a flathead like shape , Then as i was heating the plate up i noticed the soldering wouldnt stick , i had to sit there and heat it up generously in one spot until i got a part of the soldering to stick, then SLOWLY work my way down the line , Also dont touch near the edges, last thing you need is a soldering short, i had to heat mine up , and scrape it with a razorknife.

Excellent video and spot on. Tried it out on a HSTNS-PL11 1200w version and it works fine using the components listed.
For a second iteration used pin 30 for the capacitor ground, which is the 12v sb return.
Interestingly pin 32 is the SCL @5volts which powers the base of the TIP41.
The time delay is caused by the capacitor charging up through the resistor and then hitting the voltage threshold to trigger the TIP41.
Next is putting on a very board with a switch.

Q1: Can you list some model #s of (cost effective) server PS's you prefer?
Q2: Any thoughts on extending the housing to protect the components which project out the back?
(Guess RC (Radio Control) guys might have some info on making the PS portable.)
    Q3: Does HP 490594-001 438203-001, aka HSTNS-PL11 use a regular
(standard) PC cord? Or is the end that connects to unit different?
    EDIT
A: HSTNS-PL11 uses regular PC cord.

    # Scroll to end to see my end result that appears to be working for me.
I know this is old, but I figured I'd post here in case your still reading or if anyone else sees it.
I have the HP HSTNS-PL11 PSU, trying to just have it come on when I plug it in to use for a lipo charger for radio control use. I found a blog/site that said to use a 750ohm resistor from pin 33 to 36. That didn't work, then I found a site that said use lower resistance, so I put 2 of those in parallel. Then it seemed to work. I ran through a charge cycle pulling 30A out of it and it was fine. However, I try to use it today and the power light flickers on/off/on/off and the 12V output cuts in and out to match. Then it was suggested you could just put a switch between 33 and 36, plug the psu in, then flick the switch and it would come on. That works, but it powers off after 30 seconds. Well, the 12v output drops to 0v and the fan keeps spinning until I unplug it.
Now I'm going to try your way.
I also have a DPS-1200FB. Similar instructions for it. I have 2 of the 750ohm resistors in parallel on it and it stays up after plugging it in for about 20 minutes, then it shut off when under a 15A load.
I also bought a pre-modified pair of dells which I'm trying to replace because the fans in it sound like a 747 taking off until there's at least a 3A load on it, then they calm down. Would be fine, but I use my chargers to discharge to storage as well, since the chargers only discharge at 80w, it takes a couple hours to drain my packs down to storage. That's a long time with no load to listen to the fans in my office.
    Getting frustrating.
    EDIT 08/29/2020:
Running a test now with your setup, although my resistor is only 1/4 watt. Just ordered some 2W in case the 1/4 watt dies. Not sure it matters, but with mine, I can't unplug it and plug it in as quick as you or the green led blinks. I have to leave it unplugged for about a minute, then it turns back on when I plug it in.
    EDIT 08/29/2020 B:
Didn't work. Seemed to work fine until I unplugged it, waited a long time, then plugged it back in. The power LED flashes and output voltage is intermittent.
    EDIT 08/30/2020:
currently only using 150ohm from 33->36 and this appears to be working fine. I've charged packs off it at 15A using a revolectrix GT500 charger 3 times, discharged once, storage charged 4 times. It has stayed on the entire time without issue and now turns on/off with a power strip I have it plugged into.

I have that question, too. Makes perfect sense because these server PSUs are much higher quality than the regular PC supplies that fail unpredictably. I'm actually a bit surprised people only mod it for mining (or battery charger!!). In fact, it's an excellent solution for an inexpensive server. Because server stuff prices have +00 even for a lousy bracket. So you don't wanna pay that much for a really small-scale solution. But if you want it to run 24/7, then you better use server parts.

Hello, can the voltage be raised to 14 volts

could hook a little relay in the mix there powered from a 12v atx psu molex cable to act as a remote turn on. which connection do you think would be the best to break and insert the relay/switch? and in that case the delay would not be optimal? i may do that. thanks for the tut.
    edit:
i wonder. if there was a power outage and you had this hooked up with in conjunction with an atx psu for gpu mining,, would the delay of the atx startup be enough of a delay to omit the transistor and capacitor. ill try and see i guess. wish there was more info on this type of thing. the knowledge is so scattered over many forums.
if anyone can recommend sites that shares this type of tinkering for mining, please leave links.
    thanks

Why can't you just short pin 1 to 4. That is what I did, seems to power up and work no-issue? I only use it to power a lipo charger though

    • @MrBooMY3

That works fine until you unplug the power supply and plug it back in. It will power on with just a jumper but if you leave it connected and then lose power or plug and unplug it will stay off.

I have never seen the turn on mod like this, this is unnecessary. Just put a 150-300 ohm resistor on 33 and 36. Also this is not how to adjust the voltage. You must locate the over voltage protection and add a resistor to it. I believe on the pl11 it is on the circuit board facing the metal wall meaning you must remove the whole board to get to it. This is a poor tutorial

Yup, this is the case with every video I've watched...Though, the resistor ohm rating is all over the place.

is someone in the room with you?? or is your house haunted? a couple of times I heard what sounded like a young child if you tell me no one was there then i'll give you the times i heard the voice sounds like a young girl i think. - one good example is she said WHY at 12:10 listen its actually 2 seconds later but goto 12:10 listen straight away - oh and omg listen at 14:24 girl laughing! - remember you are using electricity which may be electrifying the air! spirits use that energy to speak/manifest
