Without going too much into the spoiler territory....
They are partially possessed by demons that in the lore are very primal/animalistic beings and take over when urges become too strong. Being athletes the compititive drive is enough to trigger them hence when someone actually catch up to him the #1 place drops down and starts running nearly on all four like the demon would.
