True, the soul chooses the body and it's parents. In fact, how the next life is going to be will be shown to the soul and the soul agrees to it, all for the sake of the soul's development. If we all can accept whatever happens in our lives is for our own good, there's a reason behind everything, sometimes it's a blessing in disguise,you will only have happiness. The members of our family, relatives, friends, good or bad, they are there for us to learn our lessons in life. Don't take it literally at human level but if you look at it at soul level, you will understand that they are there to make you realize the faults, the good, the good and bad qualities in you. Don't judge others, always concentrate on yourself and make the change for better. Don't expect love but give love. Love is the only way to reach GOD.
