I like bottom watering, but I don’t totally submerged my plants. I just sit them in the water for 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the plants. But I only have 30+ plants. I tend to over water, so this helps, because the plant only sucks in what it needs.
Hi Lucia, I wanted to start bottom watering to reduce fungus gnats but not if my plants will suffer. They are all doing well but I thought if I bottom watered it will be dry near the top where they like to lay their eggs. For the longest time I have used neem oil in my watering to keep the gnats at bay but it is sooo expensive here in Australia, I just can't afford it anymore. I also thought I might try Ant Rid to sit on the top of the soil. Apparently gnats hate it. Can you give me some advice? Deborah from Melbourne Australia.
I have some plants that just don't absorb water from the bottom..they sit in water all night and day and are bone dry . Why us this? I prefer to bottom water for many many reasons, one us to avoid fungus gnats .

Cool method! I've been setting my plants in deep saucers of water and letting them drink their fill before draining, but not watering from above in order to discourage fungus gnats. It takes awhile though! Do you ever use a moisture meter? It would be great to know what setting you consider dry/wet, since that can be kind of subjective.
Hi! I haven’t used a moisture meter yet. I usually try to find the right feeling with my plants. But you are right, I’ll try learning how to use it so I can give you guys more precise measure 🙂✨
@@PlantsandLucia That would be so cool! I'd be curious to see if you think the meters are reliable. They are nice to use for larger plants, but I'm never sure quite where to measure or if I'm letting the plant dry out too much. Thanks for the great content!

What I did when working in a plantshop is I put the whole pot underwater and waited till it stops bubbling. Then just wait a couple extra minutes, let it drain and put it back where it lives. If the soil is super dry though it may float partially or as a one big piece so you have to be ready to catch it (was a running gag with herbs). Upd: Lucia liked this, so I'm assuming I was right, yeeeah
Hmm I wouldn’t recommend them as cacti usually like the soil to dry completely in between waterings, so we don’t want to keep it moist with a watering spike
You can! Just make sure to take out the water after you are done to prevent your plant standing in water and overwatering :-), and also that the plant gets the light it needs !
@@lzshow Hi! I would not recommend that, as many plants don't like to stand in water for long periods of time (this can cause root rot or overwatering). You generally want to maintain the soil moist but not super wet. It also depends on the plant, there are three types: (1) like the soil to dry completely in between wterings (i.e. many succulents and cacti), (2) like the soil to partially dry in between waterings (i.e. most tropical plants), (3) like the soil to stay moist (but not wet!) at all times. I recommend you see which platns you have and water them according to their needs :-) But this is a great question! Thank you so much for sharing here

I also will use a chopstick to reach the bottom of plants that need to be totally dried or cactus that are too prickly to get to close to 👍🏽

I think moisture meters are not accurate, in my opinion they hold no credibility. Don't waste your money.

My pots have drainage holes but bottom up method never works :( the water won't go up through the dirt and idk what to do

do the terracotta spikes work for cacti?
