Despite the books titles, they don't rely on bathroom humor as their main source of humor, and can actually be pretty self aware. For example, in the second book, one of the boys suggests that they create a giant urinal called the urinator to combat the talking toilets, and the other points out that they could never get away with that in a kids book and that they were already on thin ice

This actually does feel like a it was a pet project or labor of love from Dreamworks. Of all the things...it took Captain Underpants for them to find something you can tell they actually enjoyed. That is so...random.

      Mathmachine Labor of love?
More like a puerile, sophomoric vanity project appealing to the lowest of any common denominators. The books weren’t exactly any great shakes, but THIS?!?
The art style is fugly with a capital F and as for the “writing”, if you can call it that . . . the less said, the better.

    • @TuckyBlue
      @TuckyBlue 6 років тому +64

Rgoid, I respect your opinion, but you need to understand that first off, they tried to make the art style a 3d version of Dav's art style. Secondly, they did a really good job not resorting to potty humor, especially considering the villain of the story was named PROFFESER P. POOPYPANTS! And last but not least, *HE DIDN'T SELL OUT!* what I mean by this l is that it is more like something he would make as a different first book, and not some thing that a money-hungry corporation would make. Like I said before, I respect your opinion, but others really like it.

What sets this movie apart for me from other potty-humor centered kid's movies is the fact that this one really does have heart. Dav Pilkey was repeatedly shot down and outcasted as a child for having a dream to see his comics brought to life, but in wanting to keep his dream alive he persevered. In the art book for the movie he makes note of this and is extremely honored to have CU on the screen. While most poop and butt jokes come from what 'the charts' say kids like, this movie is just sticking to a source material that came from a creator who really loved what he made.

The makers of TTG just didn't care, they always just insert terrible jokes and then proceed to mock people who hate what said makers put in. The makers of Captain Underpants put in their jokes carefully and found how to have the jokes make sense in the context of the movies and characters, and even when they never laugh at some of the jokes, they never mock them for not laughing.

My favorite part of this movie had to be the “Flip-O-Rama” scene, where it not only brought back one of the main features of the books, but also demonstrated its biggest flaw: the page ripping. In preparation for the movie, I re-read all the books. Frankly, they're better than I remember them. There is a lot of humour that kids just won't get. 4:12 That one's actually debatable. Yes, Professor Poopypants's flashback only showed adults laughing at his name, but I think it's likely that the incident was so traumatic that Poopypants grew to dislike ANYONE who dared to laugh at him, adults and children alike, which is why he decided to get rid of literally ALL laughter on Earth.

Like when George and Harold are saying Professor P's name is cool, they start giving examples of names THEY would want, and those names just happen to be the same ones in the book when Professor P starts giving everyone ridiculous names (I'm pretty sure he briefly took over the world, so he made a rule that everyone had to change their names)

UndyingWladeslaus agreed. I fondly remember back in 97/98 when I first read the books and thought they were hysterical. The thing that made this movie stand out for me was the attempt to write in plenty of more adult humor for the old fans, and not just the odd sex joke. The scenes where the secretary was on hold, the truly absurdly austere state of Krupp’s house and the odd reference and so on all gave me a laugh. They moved through their humor pretty effortlessly with snappy timing and even when they threw in the odd fart joke it wasn’t overdone or stupid. The characters were likable too and the writers did a good job of portraying them as they were in the books
I was very pleasantly surprised and I hope the setup at the end of the movie with the talking toilets (which were probably my favorite villains from the series) actually comes to fruition with a sequel!

You didn't mention it in your review, but this is actually the first Dreamworks film to be outsourced to another studio. It was actually made on a budget of 38 million and it's so cheap due to them having locked down the story and script earlier than most animated films, having it made in Canada (where there dollar is dropping), and the stylization of the animation.

  • @aidanchilders9043

Captain Underpants had the best fourth wall humor in any children's series, ever, and Dav Pilkey really knows how to delay the punchline of a joke so the payoff has maximum impact. There's a moment in one of the books, I forget which one, where the narrator tells the audience that if they're offended by the extreme violence in the story (which is already a good joke on its own), they should immediately run screaming to the nearest shoe store, and then ask the employees to make you a cheeseburger.
Something like a dozen chapters later, when Mr. Krupp shows up late to a conflict, Harold asks him "Where were you back in the previous chapter when we needed you?" and Mr. Krupp responds "I was at the shoe store ordering a cheeseburger." That's like fifteen levels of setup worth of jokes in two lines of dialogue.

I think the reason this movie got so much hype was because of how many read the books as a kid, myself included. Naturally I got my money's worth, the movie met every expectation, but if it could impress someone like yourself who doesn't know the appeal, then the staff did their jobs right.

The thing about this movie is that it’s animation isn’t trying to have Pixar quality, it’s really cartoonish and i love that.
The voice actors are, as you said, actually acting. Dreamworks didn’t just search a celebrity with a similiar voice then (let’s say.. in the series/books), they actually found someone who could ACT.
This movie gets a 11/10 from me, a dutch, idiotic 11 year old :)

Landon Legate Agreed! They should do a collab review for "The Emoji Movie". BTW, here's a good analogy for AniMat and CellSpex on their least favorite animation studios: AniMat is to Sony Pictures Animation as Illumination Entertainment is to CellSpex. I wouldn't say that CellSpex HATES Illumination; she just has a love-hate relationship with it and I kinda feel the same way with Illumination. Plus, I don't really see her hate on Sony Pictures Animation as much AniMat, just like how I hardly see the latter (AniMat) hate on Illumination. So, yeah, Illumination and Sony Pictures Animation are my least favorite animation studios, too, but I think Sony Pictures Animation is worse, though.

I grew up reading these books, and the movie was very true to the books. My favorite part was the "and it's not an egg salad sandwich" part, because in the first comic that George and Harold drew, they had the usual "it's a bird! It's a plane!" Superhero stuff, but there was also a subtle dog saying "it's an egg salad sandwich," which I couldn't help but smile at because it was such a minor, but funny, detail.

Sometimes, even when you are doing a film/TV adaptation of children's books, you can write your own new story elements when you don't use a specific book title. I read all 12 Captain Underpants books, and they never actually did a story about Harold and George telling Mr. Krupp in his Captain Underpants identity that he has to pose as a principal as his secret identity. Plus, they never had Melvin team up with Pippy Poopypants and the Turbo Toilet 2000 to fight Harold and George. June 25, 2019, 9:18pm

Just finished watching this movie. As someone who has read the books, this was a really well done adaptation of the books. Covers the first 4 novels while mixing up the elements on what made them stood out the most.
This movie knew what it was, a light hearted comedic kids movie. It nailed the characters right to the core. It's a movie that doesn't take itself seriously (clearly especially from the title.) It was just very well done and I applaud Dream Works for actually making a great adaptation.

Great review, CellSpex. This was one of the best animated films of 2017, with "The LEGO Batman Movie". This movie blew me away! One of the best animated movies to come from DreamWorks in a while. The animation is expressive, the voice actors do a good job of bringing their characters to life, the comedy is well-executed, and the movie uses different styles of animation, like hand-drawn animation and SOCK PUPPETS! The sock puppet scene was an unexpected surprise for me! The friendship and chemistry between George and Harold is genuine and heartwarming, with Kevin Hart being funny, but still subdued as George, and Thomas Middleditch playing off of each other well. The talented and funny Ed Helms (from "The Hangover", one of my favorite comedy movies and movies in general) has a blast playing the gruff Mr. Krupp and the dimwitted but cheerful Captain Underpants, and so does Nick Kroll as Professor Poopypants. Plus, Jordan Peele (director of the great "Get Out") is unrecognizable as Melvin. So, all in all, an enjoyable little animated flick by DreamWorks.

Something that really made this movie work was also the animation. I can't stop praising movies like Hotel Transylvania, The Incredibles and such that manage to translate qualities of 2D animation into 3D to make it UNIQUE. And this movie really works it well, especialy with the slapstick.

Cars 3 comes out before Despicable Me 3 so maybe the joke should been about that.

I first read captain underpants in the 2nd grade when we were being forced to watch the live action yogi bear. The book series stuck with me all throughout school and when i heard this movie was coming out i literally told everyone in my contacts list how exited I was. My friend offered me to go see it with him even though he never read any of the books. And there I was... A fourteen year old in a theater full of kids and babies. I honestly loved the movie as much I thought I would, and I recommended it to all my friends who read the books alongside me, and they were not disappointing either!

I grew up with the books and used to never be tired of reading them, and I still don't (CellSpex haters pull gun at me and wish I bloodily died and liked it). I was also excited unlike the majority, so we disliked your comments!

And as for Weird Al in the book series, Mr. Krupp mentioned in book 1 that one of George and Harold's pranks over the years involved them rigging the intercoms to play Weird Al's music on FULL BLAST for six hours straight.

This is my son's FAVOURITE movie. He loves all of the Dav Pilkey books. (Would love to see a Dogman movie) he's desperate for a sequel to this. It really is underrated

In case you're wondering, this movie basically has combines elements of the first four books, like the origin story of the first book, the Tyrannical Toilet from the second, the zombies from the third, and the villain from the fourth.

Jonathan Awot (it's because children don't do good voice acting work in lead roles.)

Jonathan Awot I mean, a lot of shows do this. Not just western either. I can't remember the last time a Japanese cartoon had a child voice a child character.

High 5 and thank you! I put this movie on my "I'll watch if I am near a theater and bored" movie list after watching your review. Today was that day - I even had the theater to my self and I enjoyed every minuet of it. I will watch it again when it is released on DVD. Also I think the writers watched Phineas and Ferb. Lastly I didn't know about the comic books until you mentioned this movie.
