You can sure tell the operator has good control over the plow at the headlands. He keeps the ends even as the plow sequentially pulls out of the ground and back in at the same line at the ends. Great video! It would be exciting to run this rig for a few days or weeks!
I got lucky growing up the guys that farmed behind my house as a kid plowed everything old versatile tractors and 2 ih 12 bottoms 1 ih 10 bottom in the same field I miss being a kid watching that.glad to see some guys still plowing
I appreciate the added information Mike on why these farmers use this type of plow. I've always wondered why some farmers do this and others don't. Now I know. Keep up the good work. Love your videos.
Great video. The quality of your videos is superb, top shelf stuff. I really appreciate being able to watch them. Good wholesome viewing of the clean life. Thanks so much
That's still a great tillage tool, especially with today's heavy stalks of GMO/BT corn. And yes, if a person is plowing 10 inches deep, and continually spraying that 10 inches, in theory, that level might eventually run out of weed seeds, and bury the deeper weed seeds. Plowing makes a fabulous seed-bed, while expediting the break-down of stalks into humus. Also, at some point, it may be possible to use less herbicide and that might mean that some of the earth worms return. Very few people think about how important earth worms are to soil health. Good job, Mike. This is another great video.
Mike, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate the extra effort you are putting in these videos by including sound clips for the drone shots instead of music. I know it's a lot more work but it really adds to the video and now I have no problem sitting through the entire video without skipping the music. :)
It's a little more work but nothing terrible to do. I know I get complaints on the music being used during the drone shots and even though I'm using sound effects from Imovie it seems like someone is alway trying to report you for using copyrighted music. Now that I figured out how to get the engine noise into the drone shots that's the route I'll be going from now on.

Terrific video! I like that sound track. That Versy tractor is a monster, and pulling a monster plow. Very impressive. Now, if I could only find a versatile dealer close by......
Moldboard plowing still gives the best yields in our heavy black clay soils of the Red River Valley in northwestern Minnesota. However, very few farmers use them these days because of concerns about wind erosion during the winter. Also, ever since soybeans came into our area, the goal is completely level fields to facilitate harvest.
As you say in most areas the moldboard plow is a thing of the past but I think all farmers still like driving them if they have the chance and watching is cool too
That sure beats the daylights out of Dads '49 Oliver 88 and 3 bottom plow that I grew up with. Put many an hour each spring in the seat plowing. I had to even us granddads '39 Oliver 70 and a 2 bottom plow one year as the 88 had the second gear go out. In '67 I got to run an uncles '65 Oliver 1850 Gas with a 6 bottom semi mount plow for a day with his Dad on a '67 Oliver 1850 and the same plow. That was fun.
My dad talks about when he was in high school my grandpa bought a Mineapolis Moline Jetstar tractor and a 3 bottom John Deere rollover plow. That tractor is still on the farm but the plow was gone long before I went on the farm payroll back in the 80's

I always loved plowing the fields in the fall. The smell of the freshly turned soil, the brisk cool air made a person feel alive. How are these fields prepped for plowing in order to keep the corn stalks from plugging the plow bottoms?
@@tooez90 Ya, that's what I would do ahead of the plow but still got the plugs until I invested in a high clearance plow and rarely plugged up after that. Great investment.
I see a few rollover plows in the US. A dealer I call on in New York state has a 10 bottom Kverneland rollover plow in stock. I think these are more on the vegetable growing areas.
I was just being sarcastic. I watch a lot of UA-cam videos of two-way plows in England. In my 63 years of living in northwestern Minnesota though, I have never seen any there.
jacky bruckers Yes there are roll over plows used In the United States, generally the largest are 8-10 bottoms a side and are hooked up to the 3 point Hitch. Mostly used in the Western U.S. because the fields out here are generally smaller which is more efficient to laser level and irrigate.
I can't remember did you say that these are built at the same factory as the case? It would be a monster to maneuver in the corners an gate ways but boy you could turn some dirt
Using no coulters I see.Very much added wear on the shins and thus why the furrow is so sloppy. Also why I see few spots where the tractor pulled out and drove across plowed ground, probably to dislodge a plug of stalks. I do like the way he broke off 2 headlands, plowed each together and then having one middle land to plow apart, leaving only 1 dead furrow. The fine art of moldboard plowing is about lost, what i'd give if this farmer would call me and I could go up for a few weeks in late fall and take my 550 hp 4 wheel drive and plow with him!! That would be better than x-mas anyday!
I think you said the bottoms were width-adjustable. I do recall you saying he was cutting a swath of 28 feet. That would mean the plow bottoms were set at cutting 24". Is that right? They do not look that wide? Also, I think you said he was plowing 10" deep. From these shots, it looks more lik 6-7" deep. Is 10" right? Why no use of rolling coulters?
I stepped off about 28 feet for what that is worth. According to Salfords spec 10"' is max depth and he told me he was going max. Standing in the furrow myself it was around 10'' I'd say.
Thanks. I grew up with 3-16" MM moldboard plow - logged many hours at 3.0-3.5mph. The magnitude of this plowing is so far beyond my imagination, 7X width, 2X faster. Oh, ... so much has changed! Thanks for another great video.
28 foot is almost 9 meters wide. This is with each pass. If you had a heavy disk you wouldn't be able to cover as much ground as this plow does with the same quality of work done. And that is at 7.5 miles per hour minimum. So I think plowing is the way to go..
Lol no there is a few people that like the other colors better. I know one guy that was going to paint his grill black over the yellow. Hopefully I'll get back to that tractor for a video. Maybe the black grill will be enough to put you over the edge.
I am struggling here - you said 26' per pass but that would be 24" bottoms. I have not heard of nor do these bottoms look over 18". Big difference because 14 18" bottoms would equal 21 feet not 28.
