We bought a home on 2 acres that was previously owned by an elderly couple that had eventually passed away because of old age… The owned the house for like 20 years… Soooo many medicinal herbs are all over the yard. The yard is overgrown for the last 10 years so each season from now on, I get a new supply and surprise here and there. This spring I am determined to get all of the original gardens weeded, all the poison ivy out, and back to their original glory.

How wonderful for you. My husband and I moved onto a property where the elderly couple had tried to eradicate all extra plant life. 😢 Just had trees and grass. I'm putting in the medicinal garden as well as vegetables and flowers. I'm happy to do it though! Enjoy your bounty!!!!
We were taught to plant catnip around the borders of our gardens, to prevent cats from bothering any of our food/medicinal/edible flowers.
Sage is great for steaming. I steam my whole house during cold and flu season.
Hi, do you pit the sage in a pot of boiling water or do you fill a steamer to let the sage 'sweat'?
@@mclovin8739 I didn't think of it that way,I sweat it if Im putting a towel over my head to steam myself and just in a pot to steam the whole house. Winter it gets so dry inside. It's drying to the sinuses
Yes Nettle is one of the most nutritious plants on the planet!
At a time of flu season Mullein is good to have around for keeping mucus out of your lungs!
Mullein leaf is great herb for allergies, asthma, bronchitis, etc. Good plant/ herb. & Marshmallow root & immune boosting properties. 😊😁👍👍👍👍
I really love tulsi basil. To me it tastes like a mix of basil and mint
Strawberry Mint is wonderful. It is delicious added to smoothies, lemonaid and as a tea.
You're my role model as i start homesteading and gardening ny myself at age 69. I struggle wirh the work but next year for sure i need to get these herbs into the ground plus vegies and more fruit trees as the pear tree hasnt done anything but grow leaves and get taller. Ive also been getting canning supplies as the food pantries and highrises and kids lunch programs throw away tons of food on a daily basis. I compost alot of it but want to get a freezer. I just found a second dehydrator. You're lucky you have support. Thanks for the herbal peptalk. I'm in Pittsburgh city but have half an acre.
Are you sure your pear tree is actually a fruiting pear? My sister bought one for my dad and it's not a fruiting tree

thank you for your info,herbs are a dying art. my biggest mistake in life was not going to The Old Man of the woods in my younger years.he knew about most wild erbs in Wv.

Also yarrow when you drink it is one of few things that will go where it's needed in the body to stop bleeding rather than the whole body equally.

The elder berry plant is amazing!! I did not treat my starts very nice prior to putting the in the ground last fall! And guess what!! Their first spring they have many blossoms!!! ❤❤

Great video aqnd so much info! I live in South Africa and we have gazillion mosquitos in summer and they just love me. So I read that a Lavender tea, cooled in a spray bottle, spray all over exposed skin and keeps them away. Well wow, it works like a charm, and I also spray it lightly on my bedding so they stay away from me at night. Sometimes we put some of this tea over a tea candle and the lovely fumes waft through the house. I have read that adding Rosemary also works but just the Lavender tea alone is a great mozzie repellant. I also like that it is not a chemical spray to keep mozzies away but something natural and also reaxing and soothing, so double whammy :-D
does the lavender tea stain your skin or clothing?

Yarrow and marshmallow grows wild in my yard. I'm growing lavender, sage and rosemary and violets.

Folks, believe her, if she say to plant Peppermints in Pots! I was planting Peppermint on my fruit trees and in my herb spiral. I have now peppermint everywhere in my Garden. When i use the lawn mover, its even a pain in the eyes, but smells gorgeous :-)

I 2nd Nasturtium. I would also add Calendula and Plaintains (although these are easily foraged almost everywhere).
Calendula is an absolute must I think. Amazing for skin care!

I just made a new bottle of yarrow tincture a few days ago for my medical kit. I have cut myself more times than I care to admit and I can attest to the fact that it stops bleeding and quickly! Everything looks great, I just bought The Family garden plan and it’s an EXCELLENT read! 👍🏻👌🏻
Have you grown blue spice basil? I’m growing it for the first time this year and it’s a keeper! It tastes like bubblegum and chai, it’s yummy 😀

Thanks for the info! A couple new ones to me. I have feverfew growing as well and wondered what your preferred method of using it is? Do you dry or tincture it? Also, will you dry or tincture your marshmallow root?
This year my neighbor blessed me with starts from her licorice, horseradish, motherwort, mugwort, figwort, wormwood, chives, comfrey, elecampane, valerian, borage, spicy oregano, feverfew, and black currants! 😍 So thankful to be part of the herbal community!
I'm drying the feverfew and do the same with marshmallow. I'll make tinctute from the dried matter later if needed
I have a black lace elderberry and a lemon elderberry can you use them as well. Ty for all the good information.

@@monkeyprince5480 awesome, as a side note if you have a sore throat eat a piece of crystalized ginger 3x a day. It gives immediate relief and is antibacterial and great for the body. I have 4 kids and when they get sick that's the first thing they ask for lol

I grow feverfew and find it deters bees. So I have it in pots that I keep away from most other plants that need pollinators.

I am finally growing my beloved herbs and vegetables, after five years living on our our little piece of heaven, here in North Texas. I have many of the herbs you mentioned (including four varieties of large elderberry plants). I have seeds for what I haven’t actually planted this year. They WILL get planted in the Spring! I have struggled with where to plant the “invasive” herbs, and I think you gave me an idea when you talked about your Lemon Balm and Horehound (both of which are currently in my herb garden), although I did worry about them taking over. We have a 80 foot gravel driveway, with a patch of green down the middle. I’m thinking I might run the rototiller down the middle, dig in some compost and plant the mint, Lemon Balm and Horehound In the middle of the driveway, (20 feet apart) and let them grow. If they grow into the gravel, or even into the grass 4 feet away - so what! Like you said, they will just get cut off by the lawn mower. The driveway is close enough to the garden, that I can water the plants there, when I water the garden. =D

I also add white cedar, rosemary or lavender when making smudge sticks..I sleep much better after smudging and feel better generally if I do so on a regular basis..

Good luck containing the lemon balm. I planted one small plant and it has spread over 200 feet away! Nice to have lots but it is everywhere.
My favorite weeds as potential medicinals-
Ribwort Plantain (all Plantains) especially for spider bites), Dandelions (liver and digestion), Horse Tail (used for a month and then take a couple months off for silica for cell strength). False Lettuce (pain relief).

Awesome video. Your lavender is so beautiful! You would love Missouri, elderberry grows wild here and is actually a little bit invasive in my backyard garden. My plants get about 15 feet tall and wide.
Same in Tennessee. I have 3 large clumps that are rapidly expanding. Hoping for a bumper harvest this year, if I can beat the birds to them.
May I ask what part of Missouri you live in? I live in St. Louis. Up until the storms a couple of days ago, we had two BIG Elderberry bushes that are beginning to ripen. Now we have one. I intend to watch Melissa's video on harvesting and processing the berries for jellies, and depending on the process and time, maybe some wine...
@@bettyh3845 that storm was something else, I am in central MO. The one that came down will come up next year unless the root ball was removed. Some say to prune them to the ground in the late fall to winter but the winds will take them down if I do that so I prune them 4 to 5 feet so they have better support.

I've planted a few things among my vegetables but I would like to make a more permanent set up. Do you have any suggestions on books as far as growing/companion planting and medicinal uses? I know we have the internet and thats where I get all of my info but I would like to have a hard copy on hand. Thank you so much. 😊😊
For medicinal uses, try anything by Rosemary Gladstar. Her books are full of information and recipes.

Sage is also so very calming and cleansing when smudged or burned dry....the native tribes used it in most ceremonies and daily to cleanse thier areas...js

I'm surprised you keep the 2 varieties of mint in the same container. The taste of them tend to start blending when planted close together like that. I was rooting some mint in a jar of water on my windowsill and decided to throw in a couple of sprigs of basil to root. I ended up with mint that smelled like basil and had a hint of basil taste, too! I crossed my spearmint with chocolate mint somewhere along the line!!
New to this and trying to learn. When you harvest, how long can you preserve the "harvest"? I guess what would you consider the shelf life?
I planted Holy Basil for the first time this year and I LOVE the fragrance-very different than I expected. I guess because it's actually in the mint family.

Nettle grows wild here but I don't want it in my flower beds and mullein is going in this year 😊

@@Fritz0616 not so much on the west side of the cascades where we grow, I'm sure there are patches somewhere, but none on our land or surrounding areas. It grows all over the east side of the state.

I grew most from seed, with the exception of valerian from a friend and the elderberry from Raintree Nursery
I'm just learning about using herbs for medicinal use. I would like to learn how to harvest them. Does your class cover that?
It depends on each herb, some are roots some are the flower/leaf but I will have a harvesting video coming out in a few weeks.
