HICHAM EL GUERROUJ - MAKING A WORLD RECORD - THE MEN'S MILE

  • Hicham El Guerrouj is the undisputed king of the mile. Currently, he holds the world record for the 1500 meters, the mile, and the 2000 meters, and he has held these records for almost 2 decades.
While this is quite the impressive list of achievements, few are familiar with the training and sacrifice El Guerrouj made to achieve these goals.
In this video, I analyze El Guerouj's training and racing and how it made him the world's best.
    I hope you enjoy!

The second man is Noah Ngeny (2000 Sydney Olympics 1500m gold medalist and 1000m world record holder set in 1999). The pacesetters in this mile race were Robert Kibet of Kenya and William Tanui (1992 Barcelona Olympics 800m champion) also of Kenya.

Kiswahili Kitukuzwe 254 I know , he was great too but not a match for el guerrouj . He beat el guerrouj once in Sydney when el guerrouj wasn’t at his best , most runners that ran good times in elgerrouj’s era it was because of elguerrouj because he pulled them to the finish line . Lagat ran the third fastest 1500m because el guerrouj pulled him to the finish line also , baala of France ran his best being pulled by elguerrouj , cacho of Spain ran the Spanish record because he was pulled by elguerrouj , they could have never done that in races on their own

This really was the perfect mile. Half splits (leader to leader) were 1:51.58 (first half), 1:51.55 (second half), meaning the pacing was just about perfect. Combine this with a genuine race all the way to the finish and it provides psychological pressure to not lose concentration. It will take something truly special to crack this mark.

Spirit of a legend, that doesn’t give up. No matter the circumstances. Hicham has experienced and saw it all. Falling hard in the last lap in Atlanta, losing in Sydney and sickness before Athens. But, he became better and better, instead of bitter. Love the way, he fights his fears by taking a firm decision to take the lead and constantly speeding up in the middle of a Olympic game in Athens and still believing in himself until the end. Absolute astonishing. What can I said more about this character and world record holder? Bravo, just legendary and inspirational.

    • @sympaticoo1

Afir A. He took the lead and ran like he always does because he was well prepared and in his usual amazing shape . he was impossible to beat when in usual great shape . In the beginning of 2004 season he was hit by sickness which disturbed his training but once he was over that around couple months before the Olympics he tackled the training and got in amazing shape . he said in a recent interview with a French tv that in his last training sessions before the Olympics he was sure he was gonna win because of the times he was able to run in training . All the work is done in training , the race is just the confirmation.

El Guerouj's pace setter for his 1,500m world record in 1998 was non other than the young Kenyan, Noah Ngeny, who finished a close second to El G in hjs world record breaking feat in the mile in 1999. However, Noah Ngeny turned the tables on his great friend by snatching the gold in 1,500m at Sydney 2000 Olympics for El G to settle for the silver. The legendary American Bernard Lagat running for Kenya at the time won the bronze and the silver (four years later) behind the gold medalist, El G, at Athens Olympics 2004.

He's 18 btw, and he still has to lop off 6 seconds to get the 1500 record and 40 seconds to get the 5000.

Ive always thought the same. The timing of morceli extending his leg right as El G was sbout to pass him, is highly suspicious.

Producer: How about WAY lowering the pounding bass during voiceless parts? It's much too loud. Even during the spoken parts, where the music is partly muted, thumping sound distracts; that is, it calls for our attention, when the music should be subliminal.
