Wow I'm so glad I found this! I have an 86 Chaparral 21ft with Mercruiser Alpha 1, 2nd gen (I believe) that I've been wanting to replace the worn gimbal ring for at least 5 yrs....been dry-docked in my yard until I could muster the courage to tackle this--and I think this video series will do it. I haven't watched it all yet but hope to soon. I subscribed to your channel because I also keep "old stuff" going (or attempt to).
Hey man! I appreciate you saying that. Old stuff! Right on. 86 Chaparral... take a look at the Mercruiser identification video I have to make sure you have a Gen 2 rather than Gen 1 although the process should be very similar. Be sure to let me know how you are coming along on your project. 1986 21' Chap is worth saving!!!!!
I just wanted to thank you for all your detailed videos this summer I’m taking on a bad gimbal ring on my 2002 rinker 192 captiva alpha one gen 2 that I picked up last fall . Your videos have given me the strength to take on this job my self. Pulling the motor this week. Much appreciated you did a great job from the motor rebuild, outdrive and trailer thank you my new boat will come back to life at a affordable cost.😊
You can do it! Lots of work that will earn you lots of experience. If you get hung up in any way, reach out to me in the comments on any video. I will see it. Thank you for the kind comment!!

Your description says replacement..... You never even took the damn thing out. You should show these people how to pull the top out it's the most important part-
Man after watching all that I think I’m just going to punch out the top of the gimbal housing to get to that swivel shaft nut. I have a broken gimbal ring and I think the swivel shaft seal is leaking
Ya I know a lot of people do it that way. For me it all needed fixing and the engine was out so no big deal but there are definitely other options that work. Thanks for watching and commenting either way and good luck with your project! 👍
Because that should have been done about 5 seasons ago by the precot owner. If you ring is wallowed out and you over tighten it, the ring will break. There was way too much play to just tighten the bolts.
But if the previous owner would have been tightening the bolts each season as described in my video about the topic, then I wouldn't have needed to replace the worn out gimbal ring. Maintenance is key.
No there are alternative methods that involve drilling the side of the transom housing and tightening the nut or replacing the arm or shaft. But I find removing the engine is easier.
I’ve got a similar issue, there’s 3.5” of play in the back of outdrive with 7.72 degrees of play. I have issues with my boat riding on it’s side and even worse steering at no wake speeds. All around bad steering. Does that sound like the gimbal ring? Would you mind looking at couple videos that show the play in the outdrive and play in the gimbal (on the sides of the outdrive)? I don’t plan on doing the work but I’m trying to fully understand the issue I have.
That does sound like the problem. If you slop the outdrive back and forth out of the water it shouldn't move too much. A little is normal but once it gets excessive it's hard to drive.
@@605BOLT Yup, it’s a single step hull boat too. It rides high on the driver side and low on the passenger. Prop torque is most likely engaging the slop. It’s very difficult to drive, has to be fixed… because it’s incredibly difficult to enjoy while driving.
@@605BOLT My sentiments exactly… it’s hard to hit top speed while going sideways down the lake too lol. So you think it’s the gimbal ring as well? I just didn’t want to spend 3k on it and I really can’t be doing the work on it myself.
@@Dwq47 it's hard to say without laying eyes on it. If the steering is all worn out it's usually right the swivel shaft to the gimbal ring that is worn out or the steering arm to the swivel shaft. Google a diagram so you can see or watch the further videos I have where I rebuild this. Shows all the pieces and where it can be loose or worn out.
Bell housing has two side pins that you unscrew. That's what hold it til the gimbal ring. I'm thinking that's what you're asking about but not positive.
Mines older I guess it doesn't work like that it has two pin that look like they pull out not screw out any it has two smaller pins that keep the larger pins from coming out I can't get none of them out

What year is that sterndrive?
I assume it is a 1995 due to the boat being a 1995. But all alpha gen 2 are the same.
Do i have to remove my engine to replace this???
No there are alternative methods that involve drilling the side of the transom housing and tightening the nut or replacing the arm or shaft. But I find removing the engine is easier.
would the gimbal rings make the steering hard?
Could if it's binding up. Might be metal on metal if it's worn out.
new steering cable will fix that
