It was often known as "road racing" in those days, partly because a lot of races took place on circuits which included public roads. Le Mans, for example, is nearly all public road. This doesn't sound terribly important but back then the differences were quite pronounced. Public roads often had high crowns and groves worn into them by traffic, not to mention the fact that they were not always repaired with ground effect and rock hard suspension in mind.
Proud to say I stood right on the fence, two consecutive years in Sebring, FL and watched these cars in their heyday, 86-87. Still have the Calsonic Nissan pit banner.
That was epic and rates with me as one of the best group C film clips I have ever seen , The in cab with the Merc was most reviling and almost put you behind the wheel . Thanks for posting this MPZ
the memories of my chlidhood, the best race cars in the world ever made almost 400 Km/h only for pilots with big balls !!! thanks MPZ for this video The sound of the Porsches 2.65/3.2 liters biturbo flats 6 clylinders and the big bangers V8 5.4 liters biturbo of the Mercedes, are the sound of the God's Cars
What a great blast from the past. I used to be a freelance photographer back in the 1980s, motorsports being my specialty. And it was this type of racing I enjoyed covering the most. That C11 is a torquey bastard, ain't it?
B0SSNINE The Porsche 962 was identical to the 956, except the cockpit was shifted slightly back to meet IMSA regulations in the US. The C11 was an even faster version of the earlier C9. Neither were tuned down from earlier versions.
+BOSSINE Actually, they're running about the same power as they did then. In race trim it put out about 720-730 hp and maybe 820 in practice (as qualifying was known then). But the trouble is that the only thing anyone seems to talk about with the C11 is how much power it made. It wasn't really that much more powerful than the others. The Nissan, for example made the same, if not more power. The C11 was great because of a combination of factors. According to the drivers, it had phenomenal grip. Martin Brundle, who was racing for Jaguar at the time, reckoned it had the most downforce of any Group C car. It also had a very even spread of torque, the curve being almost lineally flat between 3,000 and 6,000 rpm. Ultimately it deserves to be remembered for the championships it and the C9 won.
I'd love to finally and completely lose my mind listening to these beautitipically beautiful super brutes while sitting a quarter of the way on the Mulsanne straight at leMans at full revs for over a minute.....the only appropriate last thing you'd want to recall hearing, nuthin like it gear heads. this is truly thee formula for ultimate speed and performance. love group c forever!
The onboard footage makes the difference in greenhouse size and visibility quite obvious in comparison to the current LMP1 designs. Great footage and sound, thank you!
I don't know how you guys do it, you get the best footage and sound I've seen on youtube. Definitely my favorite channel on youtube at the moment, thanks for the videos!! Also, major respect to these drivers. They make pushing these cars look easy. I've driven the 962 and Sauber C11 in sims and concentrating on the line lap after lap for that long in that much of a car takes ridiculous amounts of focus. 1 mistake or a late brake and you're done. Cajones!
Love this. This is pure automotive racing. I like how every so often a driver f's up and spins the car. You don't see that anymore with traction control systems. You also don't see mis-shifts since everything is sequential now. Sad to say, but racing these days is pretty boring. There's no more excitement. Whereas in this you see the drivers fighting themselves, the track, the car and each other. So many elements critical to a podium finish.
Great vids from Spa! Finally somebody who understands how to create a good car montage. I saw a few cars from the classic races at the museum. But seeing them in action is the real deal.
amen to that! :) Not to mention, when they opened that 26b. It had very little wear. And experts estimated that it could probably have done another 24hrs without major issues. Respect is surely deserved.
Just when i was thinking the only thing that could make this video better would be some on-board camera you cut to the drivers POV of the Sauber C11. Great video
I love it at 5:35 where you can see the gearshift (white knob on the right) moving, when he steps on the throttle. Absolutely fascinating, you don't see this today in racing cars without manual gearbox.
Great video!, I do the graphics on a number of these cars but rarely get to see them out on track, this video shows them at their best, brilliant. I did the stickers on the Calsonic Nissan, the Jagermeister Porsche, the Blaupunkt Porsche, the YHP Nissan and a couple of others. Great Vid.
Sadly my friend wasn't there this year with their two Porsche 956 New Man and JDavid. But you can see them at Solitude Revival this year on 22.-24. of July.
I never watched Group C (didn't know about it until GT3/GT4), but this makes me wish I had seen these beasts in their glory days. Safety mandates have really taken the balls out of motorsports in recent years…
4:15 you can see how much turbo-power this cars had: The car oversteers a little bit turning into the start/finish-straight, accerlates and spins the reartyres just before upshifting when the full turbo hits in ! This cars were really the best ever to see and hear at Le Mans; Group C rules ... still !!!
@xXYALE70Xx They have been keeping the sister car to the 787B that one Le Mans at Laguna Seca Raceway, its been there the last few months, along with one of the RX-792s.
I can assure you that's the case. The yamaha sounds different to some degree because it's under more lax emissions regulations, so it comes equipped with longtube headers that are much longer per unit displacement than any v8, thus changing the tone. The oversquare design of the R1 also has a dramatic effect on tonal depth. Also, a V8 does have two of these 4-cylinders, out of phase by 360 degrees, so it has a "Phase" effect.
Best era in sports car racing.
The monsters of the golden age of road racing.
Förehead Jönes you mean circuit racing?
It was often known as "road racing" in those days, partly because a lot of races took place on circuits which included public roads. Le Mans, for example, is nearly all public road. This doesn't sound terribly important but back then the differences were quite pronounced. Public roads often had high crowns and groves worn into them by traffic, not to mention the fact that they were not always repaired with ground effect and rock hard suspension in mind.
Now sure we are talking about race cars.
Best intro!
Proud to say I stood right on the fence, two consecutive years in Sebring, FL and watched these cars in their heyday, 86-87. Still have the Calsonic Nissan pit banner.
Love the mechanical whine on the #2Mercedes car when accelerating...really wicked! And the in-cockpit cam...wow!
09:30, not easy when Sauber come to mirror. There are so cool, one of greatest racing car.
Group C , the masterpiece of motorsports.... nothing will ever become as greatest
Except group b
What awesome cars!
Gotta love those 956 Porsches
Group C... Best Sport Cars Ever!!!
great video, the C11 is just insane...
Zubatec I prefer the c9

C11 best sounding car of all time, and I will die on that hill.
Friends, I think, thats my absolute favorite MPZ-Video...
Amazing cars of a glorious past.
History in 1080p what more could you want... magic video.

The most amazing racing so glad that I was around to see it
man that c11! I swear I could hear it bellowing from a mile away!
That was epic and rates with me as one of the best group C film clips I have ever seen , The in cab with the Merc was most reviling and almost put you behind the wheel . Thanks for posting this MPZ
Nice job! No mindless chatter, just cars going fast.
The Sauber onboard was the most amazing footage @ spa i have ever seen !
Oh man, that C11 V8 biturbo sound is saweet!
And the inboard shots are incredible, thank you for uploading!
WOW. The onboard of the Sauber is mind-blowing - looks like such hard work! Imagine a few stints of that at night-time!!
I enjoyed this video.
the memories of my chlidhood, the best race cars in the world ever made
almost 400 Km/h only for pilots with big balls !!!
thanks MPZ for this video

What an incredible meeting with these cars! Amazing sounds!! Those Saubers sounded brutal!! That in-car footage is simply brilliant!
Thank you for blessing us with this video...
What a great blast from the past. I used to be a freelance photographer back in the 1980s, motorsports being my specialty. And it was this type of racing I enjoyed covering the most. That C11 is a torquey bastard, ain't it?
fav series of race cars, of all time
This video is incredible. Really appreciate it, must have been something to see in person. Thanks.
The C11 are again at the Spa Classic - link to the straterlist in the description above.
Yes, it was UNBELIEVEABLE
Most awesome era of racing. Thanks for posting, in HD no less! Gonna port this over to my 60" Panasonic GT50 and have an eye/eargasm.
We rightly marvel at the technology behind current LMP1 cars but you have to have full respect for the drivers here. That Sauber onboard is stunning
Porsche 962 is the legend to me. But that c11 is a monster. They all are but I just wish modern lmp1 would become competitive like this era
Crazy to think how both of those are tuned-down (tuned WAY down) versions of their predecessors!!
B0SSNINE The Porsche 962 was identical to the 956, except the cockpit was shifted slightly back to meet IMSA regulations in the US. The C11 was an even faster version of the earlier C9. Neither were tuned down from earlier versions.

A
Aaa
I'd rather watch Group C than Formula 1 nowadays.
+creatyve Yep, anything is better than F1. It isn't racing, it's just tow-the-line...
F1...what is that ? Have you seen those demo car derbys At Emmen in the Netherlands?
Same here
Seriously, f1 nowadays is bullshit
Omg I love this vid some of the best sports car racing sounds you will ever hear. especially that sauber c11 merc sounds like a muscle car.
nah more like a bear from hell
That C11 brings a tear to my eye, thank you for uploading such glorious footage.
oh my word the power and torque of that big merc v8 is unbelievable
It actually made less power than the Nissan and Toyota and less torque than the Jaguar.
I'd love to finally and completely lose my mind listening to these beautitipically beautiful super brutes while sitting a quarter of the way on the Mulsanne straight at leMans at full revs for over a minute.....the only appropriate last thing you'd want to recall hearing, nuthin like it gear heads. this is truly thee formula for ultimate speed and performance. love group c forever!
onboard in the Sauber was fantastic! love Group C
Wonderful sounds.
Sons fantásticos.
The onboard footage makes the difference in greenhouse size and visibility quite obvious in comparison to the current LMP1 designs. Great footage and sound, thank you!
Very nice video & beautiful cars
The Le Mans winning 787B is currently owned by Mazda itself, it's a museum piece. All of the cars in this video are privately owned.
Wow, that is truly impressive!! Bob Berridge, Suaber C11 - average speed 192.336km/h. Great stuff, thanks a span for the upload.
Incredible cars! Saw them last year in Montmelo (Catalonia GP) and they were the most spectacular cars all arround.
Respect from JAPAN
Atsushi Interactive Thank you...I appreciate this...
Hey, Japan built probably the greatest group C car in the Mazda 787b. We should be thanking you 😊
I don't know how you guys do it, you get the best footage and sound I've seen on youtube. Definitely my favorite channel on youtube at the moment, thanks for the videos!!

Mother of motor heavens! that Sauber sounds glorious!
Mpzracevideo, I cannot thank you enough for satisfying my voracious appetite for HIGH QUALITY videos of the most over engineered cars ever produced. I
I almost cried. So beautiful...
I love it, there is nothing better then that.
amen to that! :) Not to mention, when they opened that 26b. It had very little wear. And experts estimated that it could probably have done another 24hrs without major issues. Respect is surely deserved.

Impeccable quality, thanks for sharing!

all that was missing is 4-rotary.787B :P
Hopefully next year :D
I love it at 5:35 where you can see the gearshift (white knob on the right) moving, when he steps on the throttle. Absolutely fascinating, you don't see this today in racing cars without manual gearbox.
Yup, subtle differences are the flutes and scoop in the front apron section - very similar cars though!
DAT SAUBER C SOUND!!!
Yes, great...
I love the way he flew through the uphill S curve!
Sorry MPZ, forgot to say that this is a wonderful video, thank you.

magníficos vehículos, el video muy bien, no cabe duda estos carros son maravilla de la tecnología. saludos amigos
With a topspeed of 253 mph (407 km/t), the Sauber Mercedes C11 was one of the fastest cars in racing, at it´s time... Beautiful :)
4:20 - what a beast
Music to my ears! :D
Great Vid.

I never watched Group C (didn't know about it until GT3/GT4), but this makes me wish I had seen these beasts in their glory days. Safety mandates have really taken the balls out of motorsports in recent years…
absolutely awesome sound and video!
4:15
you can see how much turbo-power this cars had:

This cars were really the best ever to see and hear at Le Mans; Group C rules ... still !!!

Love this cars, have one time seen on "Oldtimere Grand Prix" on Nuerburgring
The Sauber Mercedes sounds like an American Muscle car! Great video, thanks for posting.
@xXYALE70Xx
They have been keeping the sister car to the 787B that one Le Mans at Laguna Seca Raceway, its been there the last few months, along with one of the RX-792s.
@scotty554 they are, the 956 driven by stefan b still holds the lap record at the nurburgring.
Galaxy, thanks for post " great sound record Pro "
This video is amazing and heartbreaking at the same time since I know I will never drive any of those phenomenal cars
as you see in this awesome video nothing beats a V8 or V12 engine sound.the benz sounds like a angry Lion.awesome Car.
I can assure you that's the case. The yamaha sounds different to some degree because it's under more lax emissions regulations, so it comes equipped with longtube headers that are much longer per unit displacement than any v8, thus changing the tone. Beautiful! thanks for this great video.
Simply Intoxicating.
Wow! very nice machines! thanks for the video!
