There's an emphasis put on flies and equipment because those things make money! It's hard to sell someone a drag-free drift, so guides keep that part secret.
This is the type of dude I’ve always hoped to run into on the water. Guys like this have spent SO much time on the water accruing a lifetime’s worth of knowledge that they’re just waiting for someone to show some interest so they can pass that knowledge on. My plan is to casually strike up a conversation while passing by a gentleman that has that unmistakeable fly-fishing-PhD aura... After some friendly chatting, I’ll ask for a few tips to stoke the fire... Then, I’ll casually mention how “my whole life, I have had to struggle through this all on my own, because I never had any fish-savvy friends or family growing up”... To which he will surely reply “Aw man, that’s too bad”..... I slowly, VERY slowly, pick my head up, and I try to recall the scene from Lion King where Simba is searching for Mufasa after he plummeted to his death (to muster up a single, clutch tear). I look him straight in the eyes, and with a tone that is precariously teetering between unrelenting determination and crippling desperation, I say, “TEACH ME... EVERYTHING.” ... And from that point forward, I have a Fly Fishing Jedi Master mentor, and I catch hella fishes.
TomBrooklyn good question, I usually walk Upstream to make the way back easier but walking with the glare on your side might help on a clear day. But you also have to the the first half of he day might be the best because it’s morning so walking downstream would spook the Fish below in some spots
