  • I'm tackling some more questions regarding DOT regulations. Today we will elaborate on the rules surrounding Medical Examiners Certificates (otherwise known as a DOT card). I'll give you the breakdown of the regs, go over what to expect at the exam, and how long your certification is good for. I'll even talk about Farmer exemptions. Let me know if this information is valuable to you and if you would like to see more videos like this one.

    In Canada, if you have a CDL, you are required to get a medical exam periodically based on your age. Less than 45, every 5 years, 45-65 every 3 years, over 65 yearly.

      There is a certain condition where you need a med card when operating a commercial vehicle that does not require a CDL liscence. You will always need a med card when your configuration requires a CDL liscence.

    Farm tags rule vary wildly from state to state the 2 I know for sure. Arizona no health or CDL not matter weight. Okla 54k max weight and all CDL and health card. Texas loves to get half tin trucks pulling car trailers for no health or dot num. Most think I don't need but a standard car trailer has 2 3500 pound axles making them 7k before truck rating pushing vehicle easily over the 10k. Even the cheap car trailers generally have 2500 pound axles and hook that to a truck with 6k rating easy tickets for dot

    Correction: You do not need a med card if you are participating in INTRAstate commerce and based on your configuration do not require a CDL. You absolutely do need a med card when participating in INTERstate commerce. Good roll up info though.

    So under the "general appearance " ruling can I be denied for simply being ugly and having a slight limp??
    I have never had to deal with the DOT stuff but I assumed that certain medications would be a no-go?? I don't take any but so many I have had to take over the years always have warning about sleepiness and driving. Would any of those types of medications keep someone from getting a medical card?? These are very helpful. Thing I am curious about is how the weight works. If I have a 14,000 pound gross trailer and a 8800 pound gross three-quarter ton truck how do they decide whether or not you were overloaded? How do they determine how much weight is to be on the truck on the front or back axle of the trailer, I am also interested in learning about bridge law.

    • @FirewoodattheFurnace
      @FirewoodattheFurnace  5 місяців тому +2

      That is a big topic. I specialized in size and weight and there are alot of variable from state to state regarding weight. You have to comply with gross combination weight which is the total weight of both, axle weights, tire weight ratings, and as you stated inner and outer bridge. Bridge is the distance between the center of a group of axles. It can be just 2 or up to however many you have. You then take the number of axles, and the distance between them and compare it to your states bridge chart. That will tell you the weight allowed over that group of axles.

    Thank you Brad for more clarifications on this. Would you mind elaborating on "for hire". I thought that I read that firewood is an "exempt" commodity. So does this mean that if you deliver firewood you are not technically "for hire"? Also if you are deemed "for hire" do you then need an MC number as well? Thanks again!

    • @FirewoodattheFurnace
      @FirewoodattheFurnace  5 місяців тому +2

      not for hire simply means that you are hauling for yourself, or for no compensation. If you are making money then you are for hire. MC numbers are for haulers traveling across state lines. So it depends, most states don't allow firewood to be transported across state lines unless it is kiln dried.

    Your AG product to the sale site is absolutely covered under the farmers exemption. Now in my case the AG exemption for hire( outside the ownership) is practically useless now because it only covers product that hasn't been processed. After the first process I don't get an AG exemption. According to our safety guys at my company that means potatoes from the field would but if they are washed and sorted on the farm they aren't and for our needs it's just not worth the fight to use an exemption that runs my 70 either way. Now the real fight for people would be the document of hours because well if we logged the whole process like we have to as CDL drivers my hobby looks like a crayon painting from a 2year old.
    Basically the exemptions are set up for an all or nothing method of business not a hobby.

      Here's a question for you... As a professional driver it is virtually to have any side hustle because of HOS. Hobbies are ok... Hunting, fishing ECT... Now how does the hobby farm legal work into that. Everyday chores... End game of making enough to pay off the feed and filling your own freezer. My understanding is .. there's a whole lot of people who don't realize/care what they need to log.

    You also need a UCR for transporting across state lines and if you don't put a name on your doors you can register your vehicle on F350 does not need or a medical card your registered as private use and it's not over $10,005.26 126000 you do not need a CDL you do not need a CDL if you have a 5500 Dodge Ram as long as the trailer and tractor in the weight of the truck is all under 26,000 lbs you do not need a CDL

      If you are over 10,000 pounds and you are in commerce, 390.21 requires you to have your name and DOT number on both sides of the vehicle. Written in a contrasting color and visible from 50 feet. It doesnt matter what weight you register it at, it goes by the Manufacturers Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.
