You missed the two most useful features of the paint tool - clone and scratch removal. Clone works very well as a basic way to hide objects in frame - for example you have a GoPro hidden amongst some grass - clone a spot nearby and feather it a bit, works perfectly well. Same with any imperfections in set backgrounds or to do a quick and dirty job of painting out a camera person from a background etc. Scratch removal is very useful as a way to freeze a section of the frame in place while the rest of the frame keeps moving. Example - Your frame starts off clean but at some point a camera person edges in to the right side of the frame. Rather than add another video layer and apply an animatte where the frame is clean, just draw a shape over the area where the camera op pokes in then set the mode to scratch removal and the method to be "from start" and Avid will take the frame as it is at the start of the clip where there is no cameraperson and maintain that throughout the whole shot. On a locked off shot that has saved you time and additional layers.
Dude that's really awesome info! You know it's funny I told my wife today about this vid that I'm running out of ideas here (I made 99 of these things) and now I'm posting videos about effects I have barely used and know anything about...sigh...only a lot of high alcohol beers will help me through this!
Good lawd I had to do this so much to remove camera guys in shot, set monitors, tons of random shit that wasn't supposed to be there on a recent project. Tracker really helps too. Of course there's a limit to where AE is the only tool that will work for complex cloning and roto.
Good question man! No, that's actually for a on-air media reel for someone I worked with at Maury. We still have 6 weeks of post and then we'll see if NBC has other spots to shuffle us into!
I use the paint effect all the time to yellow highlight words and sentences in documents. Use Darken Only, change the color to yellow, set the box to the area you want to highlight and viola. On that note Here is a question, is there a way to change how an effect launches by default? Can I change the default paint effect to come up Yellow, Darken Only instead of Red, Solid?
Very good use for the paint effect. I don't know how to make that default but I would definitely save a effect with the yellow darken only box in my effects bin and then next time I want to use it at least I have that starting point. Saves a few steps to have more time to drink.
