  • There is no other river like this one ,for wild trout fishing adventures. This is a cold mountain river that can hold some very big trout, both Rainbows and Browns. You need to make sure your fishing knots are strong or you might just lose that trophy Trout you were always going on about. The river was up a wee bit when I went in on this day. I found the fishing to be a little hard however the trout I did hook were full of fight and in great condition ,considering it is the start of the fishing season, here in new Zealand. Enjoy the clip and subscribe to watch me fish my way through the 2017 summer Back country season. If you have a specific question please comment and I will get back to you asap.
    regards Shane

Nice one Shane, looks like a great bit of water. I think I recognise this, is there a major confluence just downstream from here? cheers, Craig

This little piece of water is slightly out of the way. You have to deviate off the path for a few hundred meters over some shitty ground and that stops a few anglers going straight for the best water. because of that, it always holds a fish or two. yes the big main confluence is about 2km downstream. This river starts with a W :)

Good release! Are they spawning now or how do you tell if its a hen or jack?

Hey mate. Na spawning is pretty much over for these guys. That is between April and September, (Winter). A jack, (male) has a hook on its lower jaw, while the Hen, (female) is just rounded.

Just curious, what weight fly rod and tippet were you using? Just wondering if a 5wt rod will hold those big trout you guys are catching/releasing in New Zealand.

Hey man. I used a 5# rod for most of the 2012,13,14 seasons. In the bigger rivers where you can play out a trout or move down stream, it is no problem. However the smaller streams when you have to slow a fish from running or turn its head from running into snags, the 5# can be under gunned. I now use a 6# hardy Zenith, this is a beast of a rod and I would have no issues playing a 10 pound fish with it. The 5# would have been hard work. Here is a video of me playing a 6.5 pound trout with my 5# and I just could not get it to the net. ua-cam.com/video/-aCe3XdIUgA/v-deo.html I use tippet of 6 pounds. I never go less than that. Thanks for the comment bud. What sort of fishing are you into. What size trout do you catch?

      Shane:
This is my 27th year of fly-fishing. I am currently in Nurse Practitioner School (don't ask why I am doing this at the 53 yrs of age), so that takes up most of my time.
I am fishing for wild brown trout (mostly) here in central Pennsylvania. I use a 5 weight G.Loomis GLX Classic Fly Rod with 5x tippet (about 5 lbs). I strictly nymph fish, even in the middle of a caddis or mayfly hatch. Generally fish two bead headed pheasant tails #12 or #14 with one or two small split shots above each. I separate the flies by about 10 inches.
The wild browns here max out at around 18 inches. I may get a 20 inch wild brown once or twice a season. Biggest wild brown I have landed is 24 inches. Not too many wild rainbows around (although they do exist). Our fish are much smaller than the ones you are catching/releasing.
Of course, the Pennsylvania Fish Commission stocks lots of brookies, rainbows and brown trout in some of the streams (even the ones with wild brown trout). Most are in the 12 inch range, but they do dump some large brood trout (24+ inches) in the streams. Personally, I'd rather fish for the wild browns.
Most of the streams I fish are around 15 to 20 feet wide and maybe a foot or two deep, with some deeper pools here and there. Most are limestone spring creeks (at least here in central Pennsylvania).
I don't have any UA-cam videos of me fishing, but here's a link to my Facebook page with pictures of the streams/trout in the local area.

Hey man you are never to old to learn a new profession. Nursing is pretty cool too bro, well done. Yup I get you on the trout. The Loomis would be a great rod in 5#, I have had a flick with the stream-dance, it was nice. That first picture on your page looking down on the Brown, it is pretty thick across the back mate, that would have made the 5# bend. Sounds like you need to make a trip to NZ at some stage bud but in the mean time ill feed you video's of my fishery to make you drool. Be safe in that big country of yours.
