I have deep respect for this kind of content. I been working in the industry for a decade and dream on owning a shop. All the details and thoughts you expose here, are the exact same concerns the industry meets in a Danish context. Attracting and training talents is the key for loyal costumers but difficult due to low returns of investment on products due to online retailers. The only real ROI is on the fish itself.
But for attraction talents it’s vital for shops to be curious and invite young loyal costumers inside on trials to potential recruitment. Which has been proven in at least my shop to be the key to upskill potential and loyal employees.
    Thanks for this content

Aquarim shop should set up their display tank with different method of aquarim keeping. From the spectrum of High tech with EI dosing to filter less aquarium with only light and heater plug in then they can have a few more in between. Because I takes my stress out friend to an aquarium shop and introduce him to planted aquarium. He likes it and want to try a 10g tank. I'm suprise how the shop only have one method for their planted tank. Aquasoil sand cap + CO2 with HOB and light. About 20 of their show tank are like that while their fish selling tank use sponge filter. Come on the old school cheap method is the trick that get people into the hobby. Most people doesn't want to shell out 200-300 bucks for a 10g tank. Even with my help to set up a thick substrate tank my friend still spend close to 200 buck and we don't even set up CO2 or liquid fert.

I'm mean sure, but the real problem is desease, pests and parasites. Maybe it's different in Australia? In North America, you can't find a pet store that doesn't have something bad in their water. Every fish, invert and coral has been exposed.

That is why a reef shop is different from a generic freshwater shops. If you see a shop that has a healthy reef that means they know what they are doing and reefing is not easy. unlike freshwater shops like the big box stores. They employ unknowledgable employees when it comes to the aquarium trade. Look for a LFS and see for yourself if they have dead fish every where. That means its a red flag.
