I remember this show that was on when I was a kid, wonder how many of you in here remember. It was called junkyard wars. They'd think up some crazy plan, like an amphibious prius lol. Take a bunch of random junk, slap it together and make it function. You and cleetus should start up your own version of junk yard wars. Call it something like The Florida Man Trials or something. T.F.M.T for short lol. Every once in a while you guys could team up to go against a guest on the channel and their crew. Loved the video! Can wait to see what's next for the aqua prius! Congrats on 200,000!!!!
I have built one with the pivot points higher up. It gives a wider platform for stability and allows the pontoons to store on top of the car, so it is not too wide. Works great and gets the entire car out of the water. Good to see more guys having a blast being creative. Wish I could post a pic here.
I'd say mount the pontoon rotator about waistline to the Prius, then you can mount the pontoons on stanchions so they fold up on top of the roof. Instead of a pneumatic cylinder, use a winch motor and gear/pulley system. Prius is pretty much it's own generator. Lift-kit the Prius for some more clearance when getting into/out of the lake. Weld some plate to the bottom of the Prius to fair it up a bit for (marginally) better hydrodynamics
Who don't love a good "Let's do it for science " moment? Next time , don't forget the lab coats, goggles and clip boards to make it legit. Congrats Justin on the mini milestone, great video and content, This is a proud moment for every red-necked brother out there. This is even better than the invention of Duct tape. Prius Amphibious sounds too much like a fancy Roman name, I'd pay an omage to another famous UA-camr and call it "The Whistilin' Crawdad".
Watched this video and instantly subscribed , and the fact that I get to see Cleetus in some videos is a HUGE BONUS ! 🔥🔥 both this and the lawn mower race were hilarious and great content ! I’m very impressed with this amphibious proud as well.
That was some boys! I would suggest the Pontoons lift and descend Vertically, not on an outward arc. That way the vehicle is not as wide while going down the road, the lifting forces are lessened, and the vehicle is completely out of the water. Also, it would be cool if you could connect a driveline up to a prop that's driven by the prius and ditch the outboard all together. I love the "helm" setup and some simple linkage could be developed to have remote control of the car's throttle and steering could be accomplished by dual-retractable rudders. Then, you could back the vehicle in at launch and activate the pontoons and simply drive straight out. All the whole keeping the prop in the deepest part of the water.

Cool video, but why not build a *lightweight aluminum single car trailer with side-mounted pontoons and outboard engine* ? An easy quick-lock system for your car wheels. Hydaulic controlled pontoons to be lifted/lowered from top of the trailer to the sides. Then you can drive your car onshore at your distination, and then again drag the trailer onshore with your car if you want a roadtrip to go somewhere else. Amphibious multi-use car trailer would be awesome! Please build one..
The Amphiprius is an absolute unit. You know you both built a badass rig when your best friend Cleeter is jealous. This is an awesome video to have 200k subs watch.
You were successful on your launch now you get to take it home and come up with better improvements but all's I can say is that was badass congrats you guys
In 1987 when I was a junior in high school my friends helped me do the same thing with my 68 Volkswagen bug . we welded six 55 gallon drums into two pontoons but we ran a propeller straight off the back of the motor.. We had a lot of fun that summer. The bug eventually found the bottom of the lake and that’s probably where it sits today.
All that is left is to put huge mudder wheels and paddle tires on the outside of the fenders to raise the Prius and so the pontoons can be down when you drive into the water.
Here's a thought you know how amphibious planes have wheels built into the pontoons? That way you could coast closer to ramp. Also paddle wheels on back with centrifugal clutch, would need a rudder but would work better.
Nice concept, now make the cylinders hydro not air and the toons go strait down not fold. make everything out of aluminum to keep the weight down. Awesome job! (congrats on 200k)
