I love the Alex Morgan of the 2019 World Cup team. Today's version is but a shell of the 2019 version. She has lost more than a step and has not been the same. I think it's time for other younger players to get a shot.
I think you are 100% wrong about this! just look at recent World Cup with Spain, Alexia Putellas was coming out of injury and maybe at 50% and only play very limited time! however she is in Spain World Cup Team becasue the youngster need somebody to look up to and control the emotion of the game! Morgan might not be anywhere near her peak, but surely US can spare 1 spot out of 18 to have somebody who can lead as a captain/icon!

Two reasons not to include Morgan: One, Smith is a much better "out and out" 9 at this point. Yes, Smith can play more than the 9, but that is a plus, not a negative. Two, Morgan is just not on form at this time - she has struggled with health, and she has struggled to score; in fact, she hasn't scored yet in the NWSL. 2 years ago, Morgan was on fire in the NWSL, last season she cooled off a lot, and this season, she is just cold. She hasn't looked dangerous in a long time.
She’s a set piece threat now. She’s not a threat to score in the run of play or really in the final third because she can’t get to balls fast enough. She’s not beating center backs. At this point she’s an aerial threat on set pieces.
With Smith you are looking at a red card at any moment and early byebye to Olympic! USA need a mentally stable player and not a nut case!

Yes, Alex is a pure number 9. But what a 9 should do? Score goals. And she doesn't do that for some time now.
This is USA. She is a legend and deserves to be on the team as long as she still is lacing boots at a high level. How many stars do we have without Alex Morgan? As dominant and talented as US always have been.
If they going to do that they should leave Lindsay horan of the roster abd Shaw of the roster and se it thet could win a tournament win the tournament without both if those players in sync they need her to bring gold to USA.

it’s not “letting her slip away” it’s knowing she’s young and it isn’t her time yet. she clearly favors the US and there is no rush to tie her to the team.
I think she’s kinda favoring us, but we don’t know that for sure. Also, this can very well be her time. She was outstanding in Champions League, so we know the stage isn’t too big for her. It would be great to see.

@@jackied962 in the limited time that you stepped on the field, she passed the ball with absolute accuracy and then scores a goal. How can you say that she was not great in her outing? She is the future for soccer here in the USA. You look at Jaden Shaw and also add Bethune, and the USA will win the next World Cup. These are fast, skilled, and physical players. It's what we've been needing for quite some time.

Morgan isn't even in the top ten best US forwards at this moment. If you have watched her play this year you can just see something is off. Like she has an underlying issue or injury that she is not taking seriously and thinking she can get over it. She has been declining since before the '23 world cup.
With her last game against Spirit, I think she should give the slot to younger players.

Heck no. She was useless in the WC. Our style of play has changed and she has never been good on the ball. She excelled with her speed and ability to finish at elite level. Since she lost a step, she tries to play back to goal but lacks the quality of touch/pass. She tries to be a "one-touch maestro" because she knows she can't control the ball. I bet her pass completion % is lowest on the squad. Macario and Smith are better in that role.

yes this .she plays hot potato with the ball because she isn't good with her feet. if there isn't an outlet pass that is obvious she will turn the ball over under minimal pressure.
Hardly any of them performed at the World Cup. No cohesion because of the inconsistency, definitely not her finest. But I wouldn’t make that a deciding factor
Taking Morgan is an interesting question (I say no), but perhaps even more interesting is whether Sonnett is a lock. I'd take Staab instead. Sonnett's best case is that she can also play the 6 role, but with Coffey set there now, I'd take Sonnett as an alternate this time.
I'm also guessing either Albert or Yohannes is likely to make it.
Sonnett might need to go as an insurance policy for Coffey who is currently out with injury. She should recover in time but Emma has to be considering that
Morgan was easily one of the best players in the Gold Cup.
We go for the gold or bust.....that being said.....this is to prepare us for next World Cup period. The great Sauerbrunn is once again that Morgan needs to follow. Its time. Let that young, fearless, explosive front line do their thing. They have got to learn now, not at the next WC.

id be surprised if alex accepted an alternate role. it would just be weird too since alternates aren't supposed to be involved with media or the public facing aspect of the team, and she is by far the most famous one so they would want to talk to her over players actually on the roster. alternate spots should be for younger players. take her or leave her off completely.
with the level of injuries in women's soccer if the USWNT journey lasts beyond 3 group games the alternates are very much part of the conversation

Disagree, a lot of Americans don’t want her going. Which is sad considering what she does provide. People forget there’s other things to provide other than scoring goals. Alex at her prime was the best striker in the world !! But in the last two years she has not really reached her best level. I think we’re going to have to bite the bullet and ask Alex to hang up her jersey! I know will miss her but she knows the team comes first. We have a whole new generation of some of the best players in the world they need to be developed. So for that reason Alex should retire from the National team, but not club.

I think it’s a big mistake not to include Alex Morgan, she is a big support for the new scorers and that is a mager gap because she pass the boll so they can score, she is active but not agressief.

Emma will mostly use 2 forwards. Only need 4 pure forwards. She doesn’t use a 9. You need to be versatile with Emma. Morgan doesn’t have the game legs still.

Horan s/b an Alternate But Emma being new, may keep Horan.
Dunn stays at MF or Back. With small rosters, you need a few versatile players to help cover for injuries.

Lavelle has been looking really good lately . Horan was looking great at Lyon, who would you bring in the midfield I’m curious? My guess is Coffey maybe? I would never bring the one you put down. She’s too young, she has no place of Lavelle or Horan. World Cup roster she probably would go, the Olympics, absolutely not.
Alex Morgan (She will be 35 years-old on Tuesday July 2nd, 2024), one of the most decorated players in U.S. women's soccer history, was left off the American roster headed to the Olympics in France, the team announced Wednesday. Morgan was the most notable absence of the 18 players named to the squad of first-year coach Emma Hayes, who is seeking to return the Americans to their long-accustomed elite levels. The USWNT crashed out of last year's World Cup in the round of 16 and managed only a bronze at the Tokyo Olympics.
Leadership is being overrated, the leadership and experience was off the charts for the WC and that didn't produce the required goals. I also would replace Dunn for Lily as Dunn is versatile but she is a step to slow in every one of those positions.
Morgan is no leader. Look at what happened when she was the experienced vet on the pitch in 2023. At the same age, Pinoe (19) and Lloyd (15) helped lift us to victory. Morgan is overrated. Other than Thailand she rarely scores in Olympic or World Cup games post-2012. Her stats are really bad, 2 goals in 17 wc starts besides Thailand.
I know they are taking Sophia Smith, but Smith is really fragile. She only broke out in the latter stages of SheBelieves and let’s not mention her sophomoric behavior on the sidelines during a recent game with Portland Thorns resulted in a second yellow which ejected her and brought an automatic red card.
Big wake up call for Smith.
It’s great the top 3 move fast but are they accurate and precise? Mal is the only one that is consistent between the three.
We need to be careful here saying the second coming has happened with Smith, Swanson, and Rodman at top.
There’s definitely a few players I’d call fragile before her if we’re looking at health.
She didn’t break out for SheBelieves. She has a whole USWNT player of year award for 2022. That’s when she broke out. She had a quiet 2023 and wasn’t in form to start 2024. While everyone was overreacting it was clear she just needed to get into form to start the year. Since then she has 21 goal contributions in 21 games for club and country. She’s the least of our worries lol. People don’t realize that even with her slow start she’s only one goal behind Jaedyn for the national team

She only just got into the safe area because Mia is injured and Alex is not a scorer and limited to the number 9 only.
Let’s be honest about the facts. She is a talented player, but she is still very young and she is not the most seasoned.
She will grow with Hayes but like Rodman, they need to be more precise and take their chances with ultimate precision.
Her and Rodman need to play a couple seasons in Europe.

I think will Morgan will be taken to the Olympics. Hayes has stressed the significance of having veterans in the locker room on numerous occasions. There’s a lot of youth on the team which is fantastic but there needs to be a balance and also a true 9 which is Morgan. When she does come in she draws fouls and it’s we have been able to capitalize on some. She does contribute to build up play and can hold the ball. Build up play recently shown with crystal Dunns goal against South Korea. She’s not in the best form but she adds value to significant value team outside of leadership. She did come in with the gold cup and performed well she won’t start but i don’t see Hayes leaving her out.
I can't see US winning an Elite tournament without Alex Morgan. US would not beat Spain with Alexia, Aitana, Hermoso.... without Morgan.
Morgan has never played a good game against Spain lol. This is such an absurd comment. When is the last time she scored a meaningful run of play goal on this team? 2019? And she only scored one non-Thailand goal in that tournament too. She has been falling off for years

She should be taken to the Olympics there’s other qualities that she brings to this team I’m not going to bring up the leadership aspect of that.
She scored against Brazil back in 2023 and she’s helped set up other players score by her movement off the ball. most recently she part of the link up with Crystal Dunn’s goal.
I’m sure you would know there is more than scoring for a player that’s in a 9 position.
She’s not gonna be a starter for this team. Absolutely crazy, to think that they’re gonna leave off of her caliber her experience of this Olympic roster. She won’t do that. Johannes should be taken as an alternate to show her that the US is committed to her development. Because of her youth, I don't think she deserves a primary spot, but I believe that taking her would help solidify her decision to roster with the US since she also has the option to play for the Netherlands.

This is Emma Team yes but she is not going to obliterate the overall look just coming into her job. I do believe after the Olympics a lot of women we are used to seeing we will not see on roster anymore. This 18 is not what Emma wants she is making do with what she has in just a short period of time before the games.
Alex Morgan is still very deadly on the ball. She is a threat when on the pitch and defender will adjust just because she is still very fast. Alex Morgan is not being left off this roster.
Lily Yohaness is not going to make the Olympic roster. ( Lily coped an attitude after getting her second yellow early in the match which kept her out of the second quarterfinal match against Chelsea at Champions League. She decided she did not want to play and was eventually taken out a few minutes into the second half that was on the big stage.) She needs to grow up still. Korbin Albert will make this team she will fill if Coffey is unavailable.

You know nothing about soccer (where I was born is football and where I was raised is futbol) if you think you dont need Alex Morgan. Besides Horan you got no leadership on this team. The perfect example was the game against Colombia last March. Morgan took the lead when the game became dirty. He did everything before that penalty kick that took forever. Who is going to do that? Swanson? LaBelle? Smith?

Dunn over Morgan is insane to me. I get leaving Morgan off, but to then include Dunn is bonkers. Dunn can't even get on the pitch at club level, she's not at USWNT Olympics level right now.
Dunn can play at the back, wingback and forward. Has scored more run of play goals than AM this year lol. Much better choice than Morgan and allows flexibility bc of her versatility on small roster
Alex will have one more moment with USA she deserves to have that opportunity after all she has done for the USWNT and USA. But if we don’t include her how will she make her mark on yet another tournament victory.
She hasn’t deserved her spot on the USWNT since the last Olympics based on her performances. She deserves nothing more . She’s already been over promoted and propped up for too long.
I’m a bit tired of the “leadership” argument to keep Morgan. Leadership is also a skill that needs to be passed on to younger players, and can blossom when older players move on.

they should try horan as a target 9 honestly. she's better on the ball than morgan and has a better shot, better in the air. they are both slow, but horan can play others in with her passing range. gets horan out of the midfield where she is too slow against top teams to play as an 8.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Here's why not. She had her chance at the World Cup... Many times. And she failed miserably. Others make her look good. There are other players to lead this team. And other players that actually score consistently. It's time for new players. Please move on Morgan. Be the respectful player like Ellen White and Carli Lloyd and others who realized it was time to move on.
Carly Lloyd played as long as she could. She went to the Olympics and didn’t play it all really. She was not in the best form either. People in the number nine position do more than scoring goals, if you want to use the World Cup performance to evaluate her overall then.. there should be some players on this roster who don’t go. She’s very valuable to team. She actually makes others look with her movement off the ball, which allows other players to open up and score. Happens a lot, people don’t pay attention and all they really focus on her ability to score.
@@andreadecinto1630 seems like a backhanded slight at the end. I coach soccer, do you? Next, Forwards, especially a number 9 is supposed to score occasionally. She has yet to score consistently. I think she scored one goal this season in the NWSL. She did not score in the WC. She took Mia Fishel's position and got lucky scoring a bit. Other players can do the movement on the ball and allow other players to open up or they can actually score. It happens a lot, some people don't see what a true Forward is supposed to be doing...score goals. If we wanted ball movement, then we look to excellent mids.
I love the USWNT but they will be lucky to get out of their group. The team has been avg for the past 5 years so unless this new coach is a genius nothing will change. That being said Morgan isn’t the same player as she was 7-8 years ago and even then she needed others to create her opportunities.
