Anyone who thinks Yohannes should not make the Olympic team should watch, "Lily Yohannes - 16 year old Ajax midfield magician wonderkid" I know highlight videos can be misleading, but c'mon, we don't have anyone who plays like her. Who cares if she is young, she plays like she is 26. The passes she makes in that highlight video are literally perfect for the front 3 of Swanson, Smith and Rodman
@@locuus7 true, but I do not think she would choose the Netherlands over the USA. I watched her interview on Mewis's podcast and she says at the end she was rooting for the USA when they played the Nehterlands in the World cup.
Interesting discussion. It seemed like it had come a long way from the way US thought about football when Emma Hayes was appointed, still looking back and not seeing the way the game had changed tactically at international level. I hope Emma will be brave and pick the talented young players who will learn to play her way and not worry about winning gold this time. I am not saying do not try, but it would be better to try with players that will learn most.
From all indications, the Olympic team has not been decided yet. After all there are still two more friendly games to play. Firstly, lets hope going forward until the Olympics, it would be injury free for all. Next, it is imperative that the team should be near ready at this moment. However, Alyssa Naeher is yet to be fully game ready. Game ready means better that her performances with the NWSL recently. So, that brings up the next topic. Even though she is a goalie, she is still considered a part of the team and not ready. So, in my opinion, is a player that is not ready or injured actually better than another player that is ready? To me Croix Bethume and Lily Johannes are both ready and a good discussion about both deserves some attention. In my mind, the front of Trinity Rodman, Jaedyn Shaw, Sophia Smith, and Mallory Swanson should be the pick. The alternates should be Macario, and Alex Morgan. Alex Morgan, though fit, has regressed considerably upfront. For some that state her leadership, that is earned, and she has not. Mallory Swanson, Crystal Dunn - the teams Swiss Army knife, or Smith could easily fill that role. Macario is still not quite ready yet in confidence level after watching her Chelsea and USWNT games. Croix Bethume is far better than both from an attacking midfield role. Minimum, she should split the midfield role with Lavelle. It has been a while since Lavelle actually played to her full potential, and does appear that her availability can be turned on and off at her choosing. So, based on their longevity and caps, both Morgan, and Lavelle should be head and shoulders above the younger ones, and not competing with them on the same level right now. With Morgan having multiple outside interests to contend with also. Unfortunately that is what we have now. Johannes needs to be secured promptly, and Bethume needs to be brought in also for this Olympics and the distant future that would include Smith, Shaw and Swanson.
I have always liked this podcast. I don’t care about sets or how it looks. These people have always been awesome. I’m with Darian with her picks for who’s going on the plane. Kasey will be on the plane as well. Go USA!!!
the gotham midfield of martin ryan and lavelle is the best in the league due to coaching. not the biggest names especially at 6 but they choke out teams so well
Just curious - I really thought Ashley Sanchez was a future star for the USWNT, but haven’t seen much of her in recent rosters. I feel she has play well for the courage this season. Do you think she has any chance or future with the USWNT under Emma Hayes?
Alex Morgan should be an alternate. She can only play one position, which would be fine if she was in excellent form. But she hasn’t been playing well for a while now. She has ZERO goals in league play this season. In her last 24 games with the USWNT she has just 4 goals. She is a legend, but she can’t do what she used to do. That’s OK. Let’s thank her and pass the torch.
The two ladies on the show are too short sighted. Lily is worth far more than the 2024 Olympics. Also, Lily's season was far better the Albert's. 19 for 19 in pass completions, seem like Lily fits in just fine, now. Losing her to another country isn't worth the risk.
What we didn't hear in the Alex Morgan debate is whom she would bump off the 18. That's critical. I'm a long-time Morgan fan, but the USWNT is so deep at forward and attacking mid, my opinion is to invest an "extra" player in the back line or the midfield. I agree with most of the other selections except I'd bring in Staab maybe in place of Sonnett. That's really a toss up for me. They're both terrific. I'm also a big Yohannes fan, but I'm not sure she's quite ready to bump one of the other midfielders except maybe Albert. Another toss up. I don't envy Emma Hayes these decisions!
Very disappointed with the lack of objectivity of the "experts". The discussion surrounding AM was very disheartening as we kept hearing the reasons the "experts" had doubts about AM being included in the 18 (Emma's alleged style preferences). Have you guys watched SD over the weekend? AM got 85 minutes in a situation where she knew she needed to look good. But, for 85 minutes, she produced zilch, turned the ball over repeatedly, failed in her main current objective (holding the ball). She has now degenerated to zero quickness and was easily dispossessed by the average defenders she was facing (none of them of the caliber of Ashley Lawrence or Mbok Baty). If AM doesn't make the 18, it would be because she's no longer able to function physically (on a scale of 1 to 10, she's between 1 and 2 currently). Furthermore, this state of affairs is not new: AM has been finished physically since the Tokyo OG. Despite the evidence, you collectively decided to dance around the issue because AM is a legend. It would be a lot more useful for this pod to show more objectivity and honesty. We don't need a marketing amplifier, if you're scared of the heat, don't stay n the kitchen. Finally, if AM does make the 18, it would be a clear signal that the sponsors have a big say in who gets chosen for these tournaments and that would confirm to those of us who care that making money is more important to US Soccer than winning trophies.
@@WilliamSpieth you can't equate NWSL level defenders with international level defenders. Also, while I don't have the numbers, I seem to remember that AM's goals in 2022 included a number of penalties. Either way, we're in 2024 and the discussion should be moot.
I wouldn't worry too much about old versus new. I am sure the new coach is looking past the Olympics and toward developing the young ladies for the next World Cup. That doesnt mean shes written off the Olympics, it just means her priority is development at this time. She will allow leadership to develop, knowing new leaders will arise.

Yes, it would have been ideal if Lily had been in more camps. But her season is over, so right now she has plenty of time to study film and prepare. Then we have a three week camp to integrate her into the team. Just about everyone else who is going has lots and lots of reps together. It’s OK to bring one wild card.
@@petergodwin9189 Rose Lavelle showed at the 2019 World Cup why she's one of the best at that position. DeMelo looked lost out there. Vlatko was foolish to take her. Then you see players like Corbin Albert, Coffey, and even Horan doing a better job at it. And there's other mids that can do well with the position. Sanchez was never given the chance.
