- Oh what an event! Many everyday British classics but plenty of American metal, a super-rare Lancia Ardea van, a Datsun Bluebird SSS bought new in Tokyo in 1970 as well as military vehicles, stationary engines, buses and steam! Hellingly Festival of Transport has become a must-see event.
There is a follow-up video coming with more steam, including a circular saw demo, and a fabulous convoy of commercials!

Excellent video !. I grew up going to this show from aged 10 (Now 55). I an now living 250 miles away so this was a great a bit of nostalgia for me.

Nice video Ian. Hit and miss engines use a centrifugal governor to lock the exhaust valve open after a power stroke speeds the engine up so the engine can't create suction and suck in fuel. After a few "miss" cycles the engines slows down and the governor closes the exhaust valve, and fuel is inducted, then ignition occurs causing the 'hit" These made great water pump engines as well as many applications including Maytag washing machines here in the US before electric motors superseded them.
Thank you for the accurate account of the modus operandi of these old things. A stationary engine was on my wish list, does a 1622cc B series engine in a camper with a flat battery count? Today, I shall mostly be giving my Topdon JS 3000 a job to do.😳

I love how two-stroke cars sound. I've always wondered how two-stroke car engines would've evolved in 50+ years to this day.
I have a feeling some engine designers are looking at bringing two stroke engines back but to run on hydrogen gas.

Hi Hubnut. The Chevrolet next to the Cresta is a 1958 car, which was a one year only body. GM had planned to run the body for 3 years, but the Chrysler line's 'Forward Look' styling, introduced in 1957, made GM's 1957 cars look frumpy, and the yet to be released 'new' 1958 bodies looked frumpy as well. GM's rethink of their styling took effect with their 1959 models. On the long snout Transits, in Australia the snout denoted a Falcon 6 cylinder engine. And the Honda N600 was sold in Australia as the Scamp. The 40's, 50's and 60's are the era of car I learned my stuff on, and it's good to see a show featuring plenty such cars. Cheers.
In Australia Honda first sold the N360 as the Scamp and then later introduced the N600 which might have been a Scamp too.
Amazing to me that small car focused UK got the Z600 and not the Z360 which was the only version of the Coupe we got.

The green Routemaster (13:45) was a Green Line coach designed for long cross-London routes. A bit more padding in the seats, and quad headlamps to look impressive. Nice also to see just before that an RML preserved in post-privatisation Metroline livery (though as it's a number 10, it would have been from Potters Bar garage, and they didn't often look that smart 🤭)

I really liked the Lancia van - something I hadn't seen before.
That Tasker tractor looked beautiful, with exactly the right patina. If you ever have the chance to drive one, then take it. They're surprisingly easy on the steering for their era, because of being a lightweight farm vehicle. The Fowler which you showed us earlier is at the other end of the spectrum.55
Lots of vehicles that l never knew existed l did like the Lancia van and the stationary engines so much going on almost hypnotic

Cheers for this one Ian, some great memories, thank you - I've not been since the 2000's when I lived nearby. Always was/is a great show. I remember seeing my first ever Motorcycle Wall of Death there a good many years ago.
I love shows like this. Used to have two many years ago in the Redditch area but sadly the last remaining one disappeared in 2017.
However Statfold Barn Railway do run a show like this in September called Road, Rail and Ale which has all manner of classic vehicles, with fair and they also have the trains running.
Another great video. I used to go to these sort of events but can’t any longer. This was a great substitute. Almost like being there! Many thanks.

30:40 ...Those Commer vans were often used as small tour buses in Australia, with those wheels tucked sooo far under the body you felt like you were in a Star Wars gravity car on tight winding mountain roads.

The Aubrey Dance, (Foxy) Magnette stock car brought back fond memories of the Cross in hand and Arlington Tracks, where I used to watch as a child, he used to win a lot of races and I think he was one of the oldest drivers. Love the P.A. Cresta, my brother had a two blue one.

@ 25.54 you get a quick glimpse of a Triumph Herald 13/60 convertible in Damson Red with a black top. Identical spec to my mum's car when I was a kid. I remember having jump out many times to put the roof up when it started to rain or snow! I have vivid memories of riding with my mum in it from Denmark to Belgium when I was 10.
I love this show and go every year- local one for me. Went on the Monday and didn't see all of these cars as some had already gone by that time (some don't stay all 3 days). Fantastic video as always.
Brilliant video. It is a large show with a lot going on and that's why its one of my favourite events to attend. I did Saturday and Sunday [thinking of doing the Monday as well next year, but on the Monday there's the Bexhill 100 motoring club show, which is another personal favourite.]
When you was filming the Autounion, I was standing in front of the car talking with a couple of people about the engine and how unusual it was. I was wearing a faded blue Ford and Fordson association hat which is barely visible on 10.49.
Hopefully, you will be able to attend again, hopefully I can visit some of the shows you have attended over the years.

Lovely video. What a great selection of so many different vehicle types!
On the Giardiniera; yes, the 'G' is soft when followed by an 'i' or an 'e'. In this form, the 'i' isn't really sounded and is only there to soften the 'g'. See Alfa's 'Giulietta', which is pronounced as 'Julietta' (also my sister's name, so I should know!).
This also works with the 'C', which is hard when followed by 'a', 'o' or 'u' and pronounced as we would 'ch', when followed by 'i', or 'e' but never pronounced like an 's'.
See 'Lancia', which is pronounced like 'Lancha'.
I passed my driving test in a Nissan Bluebird 180B SSS. My driving instructor#s 120Y got wrote off, lesson before my test. So instructor turned up in his own car. first time I had driven a 5 speed car.
I remember the LT single deckers from my childhood and remember when the very modern looking (for then) LS replaced them.
Last week I was working on my farther in laws Austin Westminster with the said Zenith carb, TBH that was the least of its problems as its dynamo decided to catch fire on a 6 mile journey that involved me towing it the last 300 yards.
Then fitted a Dynamator conversion but the bloody positive earth made it a bit less than easy.
This was after working on a 1985 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit a 1998 Rover 45 a 1954 Standard Vanguard and a 1974 Austin 1800 Automatic.
I came back from my "holiday" to have a rest 😂

Nice show, at 30:15, I also had such a Transit camper (with 2L V6) in 2014 for a holiday to the Classic 24H of Le Mans and further through France with a trailer behind it with my motorcycle (Yamaha TDM850 ) and a bicycle.

11:42 Well into the 1980s there were still a good number of old WW2 army lorries converted into recovery vehicles. You'd see them parked at out of the way garages for very occasional use. Scammel Pioneers, AEC Matadors, that sort of thing.
The Scammel recovery brought back some memories, not the fastest to and from a recovery has had to get permission to take on a Motorway, top speed 28 mph if lucky and a pig in London traffic with its sequential gate change crash gearbox but could tow a house, 100 tons.
Ours was an ex REME 1942 one and judging by the amount of sand that occasionally turned up in hidden recesses must have served in N Africa. It was in storage from the early 50's until sold at a Govt. surplus auction in 69 as seen (slightly cannibalised). Today all Military vehicles and aircraft are given a thorough clean before or if brought back to UK when based overseas to keep any soil/plant diseases out.
@@tonys1636 Spike Milligan's Royal Artillery regiment used them in North Africa and Italy, a slightly different body with seats for the gun crew.
More DKW content please! I replaced my rather lovely, murdered by a drunk Dacia Duster driver a year ago tomorrow, Crown mild hybrid, with a 1959 DKW 1000 Universal (the extremely practical estate version) and can confirm that 3 does indeed equal 6 when the engine has been built by one of the UK's very few 2 stroke engine experts. I also bought a lovely Wartburg 353 S at around that time, hooked on "strokers" now, but my 1971 Morris ½ ton Suntor Camper van doesn't mind.
Also intrigued by the PA Cresta, I often fancied one of those but last summer I drove one for the first time and now I need one! Meh, who needs a house anyway?😊

you'd love one of our shows around here in St. Marys. all fulla steam stationaries. then there's Jonathan W's collection of GIANT steamers over here. went to my first show in almost 20 years (!) on US Father's day. absolutely packed. included a 1909 Sears wagon...and a MInor pickup someone SOMEHOW dropped a V6 or V8 in!

Wow, the size of this gathering was topped only by its diversity. Simply incredible. Funnily enough, the vehicles that you find to be commonplace are quite often the very ones that I have never heard of before as I'm located in the States. This is the primary reason that I enjoy your channel as much as I do. I always get a kick out of those old hit 'n miss stationary engines. The pair of Lotus Elites and the featured Datsun Bluebird were perhaps my favorites. The most curious thing of all for me was the "Dodgems". Here in the States they are named Bumper Cars, which strikes me as far more realistic given the behavior of most of those behind the wheel. ;-)
Europe's biggest rally, the Great Dorset Steam Fair, seems to have ended its ~60 year annual run recently, partly as a result of Covid. That event could cover up to about 800 acres, and was 8 days in duration for some years from the late 1980's. Almost every type of road and farm vehicle could be seen there. Numerous GDSF videos are on UA-cam. More recently, it has been replaced by several smaller events around the Dorset / Hampshire area.

With reference to the Routemaster bus, many years ago there was a programme on TV it was called Perpetual Motion and it showed a factory where they refurbished them it was very interesting
MXX 10 is an AEC Regal (known as the RF-class) with Metro-Cammell bodywork. This particular example was new to Merton depot in 1952 and withdrawn at Edgware depot in 1977. It was originally purchased by an angling club before entering preservation in 1979
My kind of "vintage" :) Which reminds me that I've missed the Lincoln Steam and Vintage Rally AGAIN. You must try that Ian, I think you'll enjoy it - the stationary engine section is enormous! Oh, and "giardiniera" is pronounced as "jardiniera" as the g is followed by an i. If there was an h between the g and the i, it would have hardened the g.

8:20 That's a 1958 Chevy. Over where it came from (USA, our side of the pond), this car was a bit of a red haired stepchild. It was a one year only model. It had the misfortune of being a model between the "triple 5's" (1955, 1956, and 1957) Chevrolets that are prized by collectors and hot rodders alike, and another iconic Chevrolet model, the 1959 Impala, which was the car that the legendary automotive designer Harvey Earl chose as his swan song when he retired from General Motors. In the movie Cars, the character Ramone is a 1959 Chevrolet Impala coupe. Here in the USA, the only pop culture reference that I can think of for the 1958 Chevy is that in the hit sitcom "Three's Company", Mr. Roper, the landlord of the apartment that was the central setting of the show, drove one, and thought he would someday make a fortune selling his 1 owner 57 Chevy. It came to light in the last episode with the Ropers (Stanley and his wife) that he had purchased his car in October 1957, and that his car (shown on camera for the only time) was a next to worthless 1958 model 😅
It wouldn't have done Billie Jo Spears's career any good if she sang about "that old 58 Chevrolet".
Another 58 in pop culture you may have forgotten was that in American Graffiti. It was the Ron Howard star car he loaned to his friend and proved to be a chick magnet for his friend who was out of his depth.
Watching the film first off I thought why a 58?
A significant car culture film that was a huge boost to the career of George Lucas.

Well this takes me back to my boyhood. I don't know which gave me a bigger jolt: TWO Lotus Elites side by side (not common off the race track even in their prime--my mad Chemistry teacher replaced his very home made special with an Elite, with an immediate rise in esteem), or a Guy London Transport bus. I'd forgotten they even existed until I saw it in the video, and after a moment it dawned on me it was not inaccurate (unlike the LT bus I saw a while back in Auckland: it was a low bridge model, and the moment I saw it, there flashed through my mind, indignantly, "They never had RLHs on the 38 route." BTW, IIRC, RT serial numbers went up into the four thousands, so many more than the RMs.
Sorry, it obviously took me back, and now I'm in my anecdotage.

I thought that too until you educated me about the radiator placement of the DKW at 9:54 just minutes earlier.

In the early 2000’s I was at high school in Scotland during the firefighter strike we had a spate of kids hitting the fire alarm for fun then all having to line up on the sports field as a Green Godess turned up incase there was an actual fire.
Oddly enough one of the school buses at that time was a Leyand Leopard possibly the last in service.
That 1904 Mercedes is beautiful ,119 yrs old and looks amazing .
how many cars today will last that long ?None methinks , even if they are restored would have rotted away by then .
There was a fireman's strike in the late 70's. I recall a friend of my cousin set fire to his own bedroom because he was desperate to see a green goddess.
