I may be wrong but I feel that one thing that always stuck out to me about the shows designs were the lack of jewels or stones in the costumes. In the source material jewels are mentioned often in descriptions. I feel the shows costumes were more minimalist or nuanced with their inclusion of stones.
Thanks so much for your comment Martin. Yes, there was a definite lack of jewels. I might understand this is the North, but it was odd that we didn't see this is other parts of Westeros and Essos. Thank you so much for commenting!
You are exactly right with these. Sometimes I feel like Michelle Clapton tried a little too hard to be "realistic" and not too fantastical with her costumes, that in the end it felt a little too plain. Especially the lack of jewels, decorative armor, house colors and other finery. For example, my point with Daenerys was that you couldn't distinguish her in a crowd, apart form her white hair, when she is a literal queen. That's why I felt that armor would be appropriate, and even could work with the story they had going on (evoking not only protection but also regality). Thank you very much for featuring my comment, take care!
Daenerys’ crown was described *so* beautifully, I would have loved to have seen it... & the costumes Sansa wore at the Eyrie. (I also would have liked to have seen Sansa’s Vale storyline, too) ‘They made such a huge fuss about Jon’s heritage in S8?’ We wish!
When we first see Margaery in the books from Sansa's perspective, she rides up on her horse, splendid in green with a cloak of autumn flowers. I just think that would have been so beautiful, with Joff riding beside her in his gilded armour. I tend to agree with everything in this video, especially the dragons in their armor, and Dany's Tokars. I also would have loved to have seen Sansa's wedding dress, which is also beautiful in the show. Unrelated, but have you seen Hollywood on Netflix? The late 1940s costumes are so beautiful.
I'm surprised Robb's crown wasn't mentioned. I can forgive them toning down the costumes to make them more realistic, but that was the one thing I wanted to see.
Sorry Estrellastar that I didn't include it. I'm not a book reader so I was going on the series or what other book readers requested. Maybe a follow up? There were other things that came up after the fact that I could explore. 😁
I would have loved to have seen Dany in red❤️And she definitely earned a crow!! Euron and Bloodraven seemed lazily done. No eyepacthes, birthmark, red eye. Drove me crazy!! Pei is a great designer. I loved seeing pictures of the costumes. Cersei. So much beautiful embroidery, but the show used whatever filter they use. I would have loved to see her in more greens😁💚👏👏
I missed seeing the fantastic armor we saw multiple characters wearing in the early Game of Thrones seasons that steadily became less and less as the seasons went on.
For the most part, I think the show costumes were better than the ones described in the books. I think a lot of the outfits that GRRM described would have looked like Halloween costumes in real life and would have seriously hurt the immersive realism that made the show so interesting. That isn't to say that there weren't problem costumes. Euron never really lived up to his book counterpart, the less we say about the Sand Snake armor the better, and the complete lack of color in the later seasons combined with an apparent lighting shortage resulted in a lot of the costumes being nearly invisible. I wish we had gotten to see Daenerys in full Targaryen Queen garb. I liked her black and red outfits from the later seasons, but they were all traveling outfits. We never got to see her in full court garb. Maybe I just wish that the show hadn't thrown her character under the bus and had actually given her a satisfying ending.
I wanted to see all of the Tyrells in green! I have no idea why they changed the colour palette to a light blue, since green would have been an even bigger contrast to the Lannister red. I was also kind of disappointed that the filters they used made the costumes seem really plain and muted. Clapton did an amazing job overall and I would’ve loved to see the pieces in more detail, especially since Carragher did all this beautiful embroidery.
Yeah, I have speculated about this in another video. I don't recall where, but I read that the Tyrells toned down the green in order to be less threatening. I could see going for softer shades, but most of Margaery's dresses are blue. The other thought that I came up with is the use of blues for Tyrells and reds for Lannisters is to emulate the colours of the Capulets and the Montagues from Romeo and Juliet.
Lyanna's tournament dress, gorgeous! Daenerys red colour outfits... YES! I would like to see a video of you on how should the outfits on the prequel, specially the Targ Queens should be
@@Costume_CO yes, I would loved too... I can help find art work that is credited and from the Fire and Blood books there's actually a drawing of Visenya/Aegon/Rhaenys that is amazing how they look
I loved this! Thank you so very much for putting so much hard work in creating these wonderful videos. They are one of the first places I look when I attempt to make a doll version of the characters.
Missed your videos! Saw those sketches on Michele's instagram and was wondering what a crown on Dany would look like in her unused designs. Sad we got those early Renly & Margaery outfits before the costume design really hit the best era.
I would love a Pulp Fiction costume video , that would be awesome! ❤ Also, would love a Guardians of the Galaxy one or Alice in Wonderland instead 😍 I love your videos, I have just found you and I am so excited about whatˋs coming next! ⭐
Awesome video 💚 you're so great!! I love the costumes people picked. They could have done so much more with Sansa🐺💙✌️I haven't quite finished. Running errands. I'm sure I'll be adding more comment 😁
Honestly, I think the reason why the show was such a success was the realistic world which was created early on. Even though it was a fantastical show, it didn't seem like we were watching a World of Warcraft series. It appealed to fantasy lovers AND history lovers since anyone who appreciates history can see the inspirations. Had they went by the book descriptions for the costumes and characters' looks, many people, myself included wouldn't have made it past the pilot episode. The show was already also complicated enough with tons of characters, adding bizarre traits to them would have just made it messy and weird. I remember starting to read 'A Game of Thrones' in the summer of 2000 and I ended up putting it down, I may eventually revisit but the high fantasy elements are a huge turn off. I think the costume designers did an impeccable job, with a few blunders here and there but overall it all worked. The only actual complaint I have is them not letting Cersei's hair grow back!
@@Costume_CO I know people say it hadn't been long enough for it to grow back but from the time it was cut to her death was at least a few years I think...regardless, there are dragons and dead ice people, she could have had hair. It was just offputting to have that short hair but with the crown it just made it look ridiculous.
@@saymyname2417 I love opulence! That being said, I still like the way it was done. I think, opulent or not, they wanted it to be simple and gritty. Huge disparities in opulence would be a little distracting. All of the nobility wear similar fabrics and styles of ornamentation (for the most part) which I guess...is a bit weird since you can tell its the same team designing all of it and the same embroiderer for the entire world lol... I did love Quarth or wherever that had those big bug brooches though! I wish we coulda saw more of that. I think more color on Dany in Mereen would have been nice. Like wear those dragonscale dresses in green, red, marigold, etc... Jewel tones instead of the monochromatic pale looks. Thats what made it a little too 'fantasy' for me also I guesss. ALSO I do guess that some gemstone jewels would have helped. Theres not very much of that is there? Just the poison necklace. IDK seeing some more personal items would have helped make it seem real. Im not sure we ever saw a signet ring...
of course dany "deserved" a crown when comparing her actions to other rulers who did wear a crown, but SHE didn't think she had that right yet. her endgame was always the iron throne, and everything else was just a step towards it. she was probably saving crown wearing for the moment of her coronation over westeros.
I wanted Euron to be dressed like a real danger. In the book, there is a reason to be afraid of this man. In the show, it was such a disappointment. I also wanted to see Lady Stoneheart so bad. How wonderfully scary, yet sad she would have looked. A woman who became the embodiment of revenge.
Very thankful they didn't do most of this stuff. One thing I hate more than anything is blue roses. I'm not sure why, I've always detested them since childhood. I wanted to see more medieval inspired simple costumes, cotehardies and the like and just more embroidery.
If the Tokar is based on the saree, Dany just has this attitude because she’s not used to it. Plenty of women in India do housework while wearing sarees.
I'm a simple bitch. I see a new Costume Co video, I fall ass backwards trying to click on it fast enough. 😆😆😆😆😆 Btw, I'm surprised you didn't ask me for my own designs to put here. I've designed armor for Dany and Cersei, a red dress for Dany, even a Tourney at Harrenhal dress for Lyanna. And I'm thinking of doing more. But either way, it's a great video. I would've added better costumes for the Tarly women (which I also designed). 😁😁
