For a character that didn't get a lot of time I loved Myrcella's Dorne costumes, such a shame her character was wasted on the ludicrous Sand Snake arch
I have to say it was also partly due to Pedro Pascal's acting. Not only he's naturally eye candy, but he also has manners, a way of speaking and walking, that make him ooze sexiness and class at every step and word. And yes, as someone else said, there's definitely something Moorish in his outfit. Plus I think the Dorne scenes were filmed at the Alcázar of Seville for a good reason. This palace is a gem.
Dorne is my absolute favorite place in westeros and I love house Martell. I am so in love with their outfits except for some armours abviously. Tristane and Doran look absolutely amazing in their costumes and like all fans I'm super pissed at d&d on how the dornish are portrayed.. Fantastic video btw. keep up the good work!
Olenna's fancy hats and jackets always reminded me of what the old ladies wear at an old-fashioned church I used to go to. Her personality would probably leave a lot of their jaws on the floor though. I hope to be that sassy when I'm her age.
I think the Tarly costumes might have been intentionally awful, in order to emphasize that the head of the house is a domineering, misogynistic jerk. All of his attention is on his son and on manly pursuits, so I think the ladies of the house might have a hard time of getting money from him for proper and nice fabrics befitting of their stations so maybe they have to improvise sometimes (maybe using leftover materials from curtains and bedspreads, because it's either fabric for those or for dresses, but not both), for hiring seamstresses so they have to make their own gowns, and maybe Talla's gown was ill fitting, because she is still growing and she just doesn't have enough clothes to accommodate it (she might make a gown intentionally bigger, so she can wear it for a longer time). Really, you can read so much into this. :)
It's probably part of their payment, so they get less salary (if any) but they are outfitted relatively well. Also, I think the house servants' are the responsibility of Lady Tarly, who I guess is described as a nice person. She makes sure to care for everyone as best as she can. Also, I think the range of fabrics available to her (or the budget for fabric) is limited, so she can get a lot of cheap linen and wool fabrics, and some more expensive fabrics, but she has to improvise because she is still a lady and she just can't dress like a servant, so she has to make do with the fabrics that they get for furnishing the household. (And on a side note: Lord Tarly looks just like the kind of guy, who would only treat his dogs, horses and servants well, but not his wife and daughter.)
I think the Tarly costumes were intentional too. I wondered if they were meant to reflect Sam - not quite up to date on style, don't spend much on frivolous things, and don't look the most attractive but at their core good, kind, caring people. Because other his dad, that's how they come across on the show. I think it makes more sense to see their dresses as intentional given the level of detail in the show.
I'm biased , cause a) I'm Indian, b) while reading the books, I always felt that Dorne was more India and less Spain (contrary to what GRRM said) and c) I love Myrcella. I'd definitely steal her wardrobe!
I didn't know that's what George said. Interesting! But you have it right. Michele definitely based Dorne upon India clothing and armour. She said she had the fabric all imported from India. And not just for Dorne, by the by. Many of the costumes are made from Varanasi silk brocade, the finest in the world. Even many of the gorgeous kimono robes and Kingslanding gowns are made from saree silk.
Yes, and BTW I've been there, to Varanasi :) The region was formerly called Benares, and that is the reason why we usually call it Benarasi silk. Trystane's outfits are closest to Indian culture, followed by Oberyn, though I must add that Joffrey's outfit definitely had me like "Woah! Baby Justin Bieber Baratheon wearing Benarasi brocade!" I find it extremely amusing how the traditional colour palette of red and gold (these being the sacred hues of Hindus) have been improvised to make the Lannister colours. It's quite expensive in our country, and only reserved for extremely, EXTREMELY special occasions.
+Sritama Sen My husband has been to Varanasi but sadly I haven't been. Joffrey's one jacket is actually plum, and my understanding is that the dye department dyed most of the Indian silk themselves for use in Dorne.
Geez! You all should have seen Jaime's reaction when he saw Mace Tyrell coming in on the horse in that affected solemn manner and that flowery armour. I laughed my ass off!!! Olenna was so right about her son Mace. He was only fit to lay a siege to the banquet table. I think he wore that same armour even when he attacked the food on the banquet table.
You are so right about the Tarlys! I didn't mind so much watching the show, but now that I am reading the books and realizing how influential the family really is, I would expect more. "Girly" is good, cheap "curtains"...not so much.
I loved everything Oberyn wore but I was far less fond of Ellaria's costumes. The spiky shoulders just didn't do it for me and I thought that dress she wore for the purple wedding was awful. She's a Sand but she's also the daughter of a Dornish lord. She wouldn't show up so bare-chested like that to a Westeros event. And, why cover the actress' beautiful hair with that Joan of Arc-looking headdress? Meanwhile, I didn't mind the gowns of the Tarly's. I mean, when the ill-fitting aspects are pointed out, I can see them now, but I didn't think anything of them, at the time. I was more impressed with how Sam's mother and sister stayed such warm people when they had to live with the brute that is Sam's father.
I agree. I felt none of her outfits made much sense style-wise. The shoulders reminded me of Jafar, so every time I saw Ellaria onscreen I called her Jafaria.
Hahaha love the cheeky bits about the casting and facial expressions! I agree with you haha! Once again, thanks so much for the upload and hard work!! Truly beautiful work, I always wish we got to see more embroidery and detail of the costumes/character pieces on the show
Really love your work! These are so detailed and you can really see the time invested in each. I loved the comparison between Dany and her brother, so neat! And I also think there could be a lot of symbolism with her and the Mongol-style outfit, and their conquest of most of Asia and their almost Dothraki-style fighting. I also loved the snark in this video, haha! Glad I wasn't the only one who disliked the Tarly outfits!
I am not sure about the mongol-dothraki comparaison. Specially on fighting style. Mongol were mounted archer and I ve yet to see a dothraki with a bow ( There weapon are inspired by bronze age egyptian Kopesh ). In fact, with no armor, no shield and no range weapon, it is hard to imagine what a dothraki horde could do against a fortified city with proper defense... Maybe the dothraki are more inspired by people like the cuman, the tatar, the petchenegs, the avars, the khazar and/or other turkish and non turkish people from this area. Physicly they also have more to do with them that with the mongol. It's just speculation, but amongst all the horselords conqueror type of people there is, I don't see the mongols as a prime suspect for the dothraki inspiration...
ShamanCore23 Yes, I see what you're saying and I realize I probably phrased my statement wrong. I meant more of how she has a horde of amazing warriors and is preparing to basically conquer a continent. Mongol horde, dothraki horde. Asia, Westeros. That sort of thing! So I totally agree the fighting styles and more are very different! I was going for more of a big picture comparison :)
I get it. At the end, they were the conquerors (the mongol were). But still I am really curious about real world inspiration for the dothraki style of clothing.
Actually, Sandsnakes armors aren't practical at all, unless they're looking for sun burns. Same problem with Dothraki costumes, especially on pale-skinned Dany.
Thank you so much for your videos...I never really noticed all the details on the costumes, especially not the beautiful embroidery. So thank you for opening my eyes, I will definitely pay more attention to details while watching the show :)
thank you for such interesting videos! as a fan of everything GOT, it's getting harder to find original material being discussed. this is whole new take on the show and I appreciate you.
Between the architecture of Horn Hill and the costumes worn by the Tarly ladies, I felt like Sam and Gilly had accidentally landed in a Romeo and Juliet movie. I half expected the guys to be strutting around in tights.
Horn Hill is really close to Highgarden so you'd expect House Tarly's costumes to at least slightly resemble the graceful and ostentatious costumes of the Tyrell's....
I think they were an intentional design. Possibly to show his mother and sister are more like Sam - good, caring people that are a bit behind style-wise because they don't really care to have the most up-to-date dress.
@@Lynsey17 Fair point but House Tarly isn't actually that poor either. Their costumes looked like they came from a mall. That's not something one would expect for Game of Thrones. I feel sorry for Samantha Spiro & Rebecca Benson getting stuck looking terribly provincial playing members of a Reach House. If their costumes weren't a ghastly floral print and just solid colors minus puff sleeves I might pardon it.
@@einezcrespo2107 I mean, we are certainly not required to agree about costume designs so please don't take this as me arguing your opinion is wrong. From my point of view, I did kind of think the decisions were intentional, not as a reflection of economic status but, again, because I think they were showing that Sam's mother and sister are like him- they care about people, not status. They welcomed him home, they welcomed Gilly, they weren't conceited or self-important. They were just sweet people. Especially in comparison to his dad. So I thought the costumes fit the way they were portrayed.
I just discovered your channel and finished binge-watching your GOT videos yesterday and was excited to see this new one pop up! In the books, Catelyn notices that Renly has the money to make his sigils and such look gold, whereas Stannis could only afford a cheap yellow. You can kind of catch it in the show.
If you get the chance, do read the books. They talk about costumes a bit. The audiobooks are a good option for busy people. :) Daenerys keeps wearing this lion pelt, it is so symbolic and awesome!
I got the distinct impression that they aren't as well off as other families in Westeros, OR that their head of house is a penny-pincher and the women had to make do with what they had. Either way they aren't a particularly powerful or ambitious family. They felt a bit...lost in time, isolated.
I hate how every time something to do with Dorne comes up, people have to mention how much the Sand Snakes sucked. Its done. Get over it. And Myrcella is a sweet, innocent person who actually had some subtle sass. The vacant look suited her. Pity she is dead. My opinion: I didn't like that they didn't get to have Doran make that awesome Targaryen speech. Perhaps they just wanted to piggyback on Oberyn's awesomeness or rush through details, show Dorne made the father and son look a bit like Tommen, which is not Dornish at all. If only they added that little bit there, it would have changed the look of the Dorne plot a whole lot despite the notable absence of Arianne Martell. But I liked the Dornish costumes the best in the show, second to Dany's black costumes Season 5 onwards. Perhaps it is because I am Indian or perhaps simply because I can compartmentalize things but I loved the outfits. The only bit that bugged me a bit was the yellow armour in Dornish heat. It seemed alright in King's Landing. I prefer lightweight leathers like Oberyn's much more.
+Udita Chakrabarti If you are not abook reader, which I am not (save for the first one) we have to take it as a stand alone effort. Therefore, the fault lies squarely at Dave and Dan's feet. It is their show, and I don't blame Michele for her part. She was just doing her job. The costumes will always be dragged down in a rotten bit of story telling.
That work of research you do about costumes is amazing! I definitely should pay more attention to the tiny details everywhere on the costumes. Maybe Selyse's messy hair is meant to make her look neglected and half-demented. She was indeed a very damaged woman, just like Lysa Arryn. Why the seven hells don't you have more subscribers? You do a tremendously good work.
Wow, Selyse's Baratheon Stag ring would catch on EVERYTHING! Would drive me nuts!!! Shireen's Jacket - that you described as having a subtle texture - is, I'm pretty sure, a knitted felt. I think it's a cable-knit, about 6-ply, then lightly felted (maybe medium felt, definitely not a heavy felting, as that would be really stiff). Have a look at it close up, I'd be interested in what you think. Dany's chain is glorious, to me it looks like tail vertebrae (vertebrae without facet joints). Additionally, the dragon pin that holds it up looks very much like the three-headed dragon pins she wore in the first series (on the 'viewing dress', and the wedding dress). Note about Dany's costumes - might be an idea to include 'Targaryen' in the video title... Interestingly - what you call 'sunburst' pleating, in Australia, is called 'Sunray pleating'. Also, if anyone in Australia needs pleating, Specialty Pleaters in Melbourne have been around forever and are really good (www.specialtypleaters.com.au) Also, what you call 'Dupioni' silk, here, is called 'Dupion' (no 'i' on the end)! Oberyn Martell's coat is amazing - although when I first saw it I thought it looked a bit like a silk bathrobe! I am wondering whether the embroidered sigils are hand embroidered or machine? I think they look machine-done, but wondered what you thought? The cross-armour on the sand-snakes is interesting - I wonder whether it's worn in lieu of a bra, since wearing a bra in those see-through dresses would be unflattering. I wonder whether Ayine (sp?) and her Mum have the cross-armour because they are bigger-busted than the other girls and need it? One thing I noticed with Myrcella, which has annoyed me with other characters before is that the hairdressers seem to brush this incredibly long hair over amazing embroidery!!! There's literally MONTHS of embroidery and they cover it with 'I just undid my plaits' hair!!!! OMG!!! The padded leather armour for Dorne would have been so damned hot in the Croatian sun - I don't know how they stood it! Wow, those costumes must have stunk to high heaven by the end of a few days shooting!!! That's it for my comments for this vid!! lol
+asyoz Thank you so much for your comments. I think I left Targaryen out because I ran out of room. You must be a knitter! I couldn't get a very good shot of Shireen's sweater but it does appear to be slightly felted. We also call it sunray pleating in Canada. I think I mentioned that in my Dany vid a while back. Thanks for recommending a pleater back home. I agree I think that Oberyn's robe looks machine embroidered, although Michele probably designed it that way. Also, good point about Myrcella's hair covering the embroidery. Hair and wardrobe are two different departments in film/TV so they're not always on the same page. Yes, Dany's "chain of intent" is very much like her pennanular brooches from season one but I think they are made by different suppliers.
I am a knitter ;) Well, I *was*, but arthritis in my hands has stopped me knitting in the last few years. I have, however, done quite a bit of felted knitting, so I recognised it immediately. Dany's penannular brooches from season one were spectacular. I loved them. We picked up a pretty good imitation of one on ETSY for Steph's Dany wedding dress costume. We originally tried making them in Fimo but it was a bit of a disaster! Just didn't look right. Off to ETSY it was.
+asyoz PS I didn't hit all your points here. On my phone. Also, I got your email late last night. I'll have a better look at it today and get back to you with some recommendations. I forgot you are in Australia. :)
Please, people, just tell me: am I the only one who feels Dany's costumes in this season looked a bit like Joffrey's? I'm not talking about the collar of course, but the long hanging sleeves and the cloak on her shoulder reminded me a bit of what Joffrey used to wear, especially during the Purple Wedding.
Does anyone role you you are awesome? I always liked looking at the costumes in GoT, but your vid arę just mesmerising and my view of this little pieces of clothes is totally new. Keep it going! You got yoursef a new subscriber
I agree with you, I am also disappointed on how the way Dorne is portrayed in the show. They have such an amazing role in the books, and Arianne is a POV character. I guess the show is just biased.
Dorne "armor" visually looks more like the battle dress of Persian (Achaemenian) Immortals circa 500 BC, color choice and light design suitable for desert warfare.
I've always been interested on the costumes of the brides of Dracula in van helsing do u think u could make a video about them, I would really appreciate it thank you 😊
Agree about the Tarly look. It seems, dare I say, lazy in comparison to other houses. Perhaps it's because they would only be featured for one episode and were therefore a lower priority.
Hello My Soup Too cold. Yes, there are lots of influences for sure! I'm actually planning a dedicated video to Olenna so I can dig in a bit more. Thanks for commenting.
a channel with +20min videos about costumes, heaven is real also it's probably no coincidence that they chose the german burgonet as inspiration for the baratheon soldiers, as i read that the stormlands are fashioned after germany - i don't know if it's true though, i got that from a map floating around somewhere that assigns real countries to westeros
+visorah Yes, I had read that as well, I think in a Quora post. The Lannister helm is also based upon the German Sallet, although it also has a Samurai loom about it.
Geez! You should have seen Jaime's reaction when he saw Mace Tyrell coming in on the horse in that affected solemn manner and that flowery armour. I laughed my ass off!!! Olenna was so right about her son Mace. He was only fit to lay a siege to the banquet table. I think he wore that same armour even when he attacked the food on the banquet table.
I have the strange feeling you didn't like the actress of Myrcella....:D :D awesome video as always can't wait for your weekly reviews :) by the way your background music is really nice :)
even though the dothraki are supposedly based on the mongolians, they do not dress like them at all, therefore danny’s look looking like the mongolians has nothing to do with the dothraki
While I'm not a fan of the Dornish costumes either, I actually like the metal sigil-embellished velvet of the Dornish armor. It would be amazing on a leather motorcycle jacket.
the costumes of ellaria martell with the strong shoulders remind me of burka (caucasus), worn by men in Caucasus (duh). I really had to search the name of it, as I only knew how it looked. What do you think? What could be other historical influences on such structured and sharp shoulders? Or is it a more contemporery fashion influence?
The Tarly Women have these clothes, because their house is all about fighting, battle and hunt. Their words are "first in battle" if i remember correctly. Their house only cares to advance their battle skills, not their fashion.
I’m not sure how invested in video games you are but that would be awesome! I would love to hear your knowledge and opinions from things like final fantasy or definitely Skyrim or other TES games armor and costumes.
Hmm yeah the tarly costumes look pretty dumb... but actually i think ellaria's dorne coats look really good on her but i guess it might also due to the actress. But anyways, thank you for all the great effort you make for your videos! It is so interesting to know more about the designs for game of thrones especially region related. Amazing designs and amazing videos on your part. Greetings 😉
Hi again Elsa! I've come around to Ellaria's costumes, especially this season. I was more put off by the Sand Snakes but I don't think it was so much Michele Clpton's fault. I think she did a really solid job with Dorne, I just didn't like the writing.
Do you mean the armour itself? If so, I'm not sure because it is based upon the original Indian armour. There might be something to it but I don't think that it relates to Dorne in any way except looking exotic.
Okay, I see what you mean. That tunic is similar in shape it's just that they photographed it with the sleeves sticking straight out... But in reality they would have fallen down over the arms. I will see if I can find you the link to the original piece. 😊
When I see the Tarly costumes I also hate them, that weird 19 century silhouettes just dont fit in the Game of Thrones world! But then I started thinking that maybe they wanted to show a "Ahead of Time" feeling like they do in the Bravos costumes or in the renacentist atmosphere of the Citadel, that for economic , religious, or intelectual reasons are a little more "advance" ,just like happened in Euroupe fashion in the protestant countries. What do you think?
I'd like to think that there is some method to this thinking, but I don't believe that there is. Michele Clapton, who loves to steep her costumes in symbolism, wasn't the designer for most of season 6. It was actually April Ferry. I do love that gorgeous velvet gown she came up with for Sansa, however. You know, the one with the direwolf? Thanks for your imput! I always love to hear everyone's perspectives.
My god you do a lot of research. Super impressive. Why were people disappointed about the Dorne story line? I haven't read the books, so maybe I'm missing something? Can you put the quotes up on screen by any chance? Sometimes I can't tell when the quote ends and it's your opinion? Otherwise perfection!
Sorry, I haven't done the closed captioning yet. I will try to get it done today - it will show the quotes. Also, I realise I didn't change my tone for them...I recorded very late at nigh and I was tired. Thanks for the feedback.
There are a lot of things that the show chopped off from the books, and most of them are all from Dorne. Rather than showing/casting Arianne Martell, the heir to Dorne and also a POV character, the showrunners rather gave more importance to the Sand Snakes(which really had minor roles). Plus, in the books, Doran is alive. Its sort of complicated to explain here but what I can tell you is the showrunners messed up and are more likely very biased in terms of Great Houses.
Yikes I can imagine that's a hassle. I just meant like big quotes to one side of the screen (obviously not covering the clothes), but closed captions works too! No worries :) thanks for the video
+luhole I've done the closed captioning already with the added bonus of watching it with the sound off if you prefer! I'll look at adding the quotes for future videos. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@Costume_CO I haven't seen these episodes and the gold and black dress doesn't look regency at all, but...the little rectangular shawls, the tone-on-tone stripe, and puff sleeves say "I've been watching a lot of P&P 1995." But yeah, the princess seams/fitted waists are wrong. :)
i think they made the tarley gowns so awful just so you could call them awful plus we viewers of game of thrones had to know that we were entering the world sam got out of and that his papa is a jerk lol in one word a CLUMSY world
I agree that the Tarly costumes were hideous but, you know, I think even they played their part in the story of Westeros. I kind loved how the Tarly family dinner was so much like Masterpiece Theater and didn't match the tone of the rest of the series, felt like comic relief and the Disney princess costumes added to that feeling. It also helps you understand why Samwell Tarly is so soft, showing him coming directly from Castle Black to the land of puffed sleeves. For all Samwell's father talks about being a real man etc, the Tarlys are quite removed from the strife of Westeros.
Please PLEASE never say décolletage EVER again!! I know it sounds french but it is not. The correct word, and make my ears BLEED like in crimpson peak. The real french word is décolleté. :) otherwise please continue!! Your videos are very interesting!! The details you give are really amazing, and I love the reference break down, It's so obvious once you say where it comes from, and you explain it so well! thank you !
I thought the dresses worn by the women of House Tarley were intentionally made to look unattractive and ill-fitting, as if to denote the character of the household. If not, I amazed they were approved for the scenes.
I loved what you said about Oberyns attire. Sometimes, you can wear an attire and it makes you feel like very different person. This is particularly true for uniforms, be it military or civil. It works on a subconscious level to the point that e.g. extras aggregate to similarly dressed ones even without knowing each other. Then there are attires that make you feel really awkward and that feeling is often asymmetric: Men have much more issues donning more feminine attires, even if those are period pieces that are 100% historically accurate (more dress like, colourful...). Women on the other hand rarely have issues dressing up like men. Similarly, we expect foreigners to dress like us, but would feel terribly awkward in their attire, even if we lived there for an extended period of time.... Then there are attires that represent a lifestyle, thus dressing up as a rocker, punk or goth may look terribly off on you, if you don't ressonate with it. PS: I was so annoyed about modern _raincoats_ that I searched long and hard to get myself a 1920s attire of gaiters, long, water-resistant coat and feodora. It works so much better and feels very different, but it took me quite some time to get used of standing out... Similarly, my mother once visited me, but didn't expect such cold weather and she had nothing to wear on her head and thus I improvised a turban for her, which was really funny, especially considering that she's not too fond of muslims...
Hi edi, I did a exploration on classic raincoats in my Bladerunner videos. The ones that the majority of the actors in noir cinema wore Aquascutum. You can still buy them today: www.aquascutum.com/
I find it extremely disturbing that they 1) use real fur and 2) use so insanely much of it. The costume designer said she "tried" fake fur but it just didn't look right.... I'm sorry, but it's a freaking TV show. It is not worth thousands (yes, apparently 40,000 per season) of animal lives just to make some costumes for a TV show look SLIGHTLY more realistic on some people's HDTVs.
Not defending their choices at all. I know that she used IKEA rugs for many boys in black and then vintage pelts. What is probably more egregious is the amount of leather used in not just this series, but others like Reign where all of the men wear leather pants.
Oh yeah of course, I didn't think you were - sorry if it came across like that. I just meant disturbing of the show. I'm glad to hear she has used some vintage pelts at least. And the IKEA rugs are fake? (Do IKEA ever use real fur?) Yeah you're completely right, people always forget about leather because they think it's a byproduct. Surely she could use pleather... considering firstly that it's a lot harder to spot as fake, especially if it's high quality, and secondly that it's not like the pants will need to last for ages or survive years of wear. Grrrrrr. Anyway, that's just my personal internal conflict with watching this show haha.
+luhole Sorry, I should have clarified - the rugs were sheep skin I think. You didn't come across that way at all. I totally agree with you. Both my niece's are vegan and fans of the show. :)
Oh damn, well that's not much better. Though the vintage pelts definitely are. I can imagine it would be pretty hard to find enough to suit the needs of the show though. Again, fake seems like it would have been the best option. Oh good, phew :) thank you for saying so. Awww that's so good to know!! Hahaha I was sure I couldn't be the only conflicted person watching the show... Lovely that you have empathy for your niece's views too, that's awesome! I mean I'm sure you'd feel that way about the fur anyway, it's just nice to hear a non vegan talk about vegan family members with respect for their views, so thank you for that - definitely a big fan of yours :)
@@Costume_CO You're welcome. I saw your channel just now and am enjoying it. I'm a convention veteran and love looking at cosplayers. There was a S7 Stark family in one I went to furs and all! I'm a fan of the Masterpiece PBS series Victoria. Love the costumes They reenacted 2costume balls Queen Victoria threw in her reign including the Medieval themed Bal Costume and a Georgian one.
+Catherine Martin I know! Haha! Some of my favourite creators get thumbs down on awesome content and I always wonder who those people are. My Reign video is my most hated video. I don't really mind, it actually makes things a bit more interesting.
For a character that didn't get a lot of time I loved Myrcella's Dorne costumes, such a shame her character was wasted on the ludicrous Sand Snake arch
Yes, her costumes were beautiful.
House Martell. Also known as "How to make a man in an orange silk kimono style coat look amazingly masculine."
(Although your video is teaching me it's more of a Turkish tunic or Iranian entari, but my point stands)
It is very kimono like, but a bit more fitted I think. All Asian inspired. :)
when are you gonna do across the universe
I was going to say it's very moorish. Very similar to Palestinian robes or even modern Pakistani sherwanis.
The rubies on Dany's dress could be in homage to her brother Rhaegar, who's armor was decorated with rubies.
+RMS Titanic 1912-2017 Oh, yes for sure.
Thanks Jasmin!
+Dunadi Then why are the servants costumes well made?
+e batdorf I love you guys! Witty barbs all around!
Truly beautiful work, I always wish we got to see more embroidery and detail of the costumes/character pieces on the show
+Wackyy Cat Yes, me too. Im hoping Michele Carragher's shares more on her site soon
:)
Thanks Gabrielle! I plan on doing a video on Essos so I hope to get into the Dothraki, Mongol style once I get there!
Yes, absolutely. :)
If actual flames can't burn Dany I don't see how she can get a sunburn lol.
Yes, very good point!
Thank you so much for your videos...I never really noticed all the details on the costumes, especially not the beautiful embroidery. So thank you for opening my eyes, I will definitely pay more attention to details while watching the show :)
+Lizzi Thanks Lizzi!
thank you for such interesting videos! as a fan of everything GOT, it's getting harder to find original material being discussed. this is whole new take on the show and I appreciate you.
+Trinbago27 Thank you so much! I watch only a few channels myself. I find that Charlie at Emergency Awesome is always on point.
Between the architecture of Horn Hill and the costumes worn by the Tarly ladies, I felt like Sam and Gilly had accidentally landed in a Romeo and Juliet movie. I half expected the guys to be strutting around in tights.
+Kirsten Paff Haha! I didn't notice the architecture, I'll have to look at that again.
Thanks for putting up such a spectacular video. It's a feast for the eyes as well as a treat for the mind.
Horn Hill is really close to Highgarden so you'd expect House Tarly's costumes to at least slightly resemble the graceful and ostentatious costumes of the Tyrell's....
+Ben Gurney Yes! Apparently there is some animosity there.
+e batdorf Thanks for pointing that out! I wonder why there's a difference in their income?
The Tyrells. ;)
If you get the chance, do read the books. They talk about costumes a bit. The audiobooks are a good option for busy people. :) Daenerys keeps wearing this lion pelt, it is so symbolic and awesome!
2:25 I don't think many viewers were thinking too much about Stannis' armor during THAT scene.
Y'know, I used that image because it's a high res shot, but in doing so, I didn't realise the significance of the scene. Thanks for pointing that out!
Costume CO Oh, I didn't mean to criticize your use of that image. Just rembering the horror of watching that scene.......
+Sybille Stahl I know! I was just teasing, but honestly I didn't realise it was from that scene. I was focusing on the clothes.
Thank you for these super informative costume discussions. I love how we get both lessons in costume design and history!
I'm learning right along with you. :)
Stannis has one of th best costumes in the entire series IMO
He has the best armour IMHO. 😀
@@Costume_CO For real, but I got admire that blue grayish tunic and black cape he wears over the armor
Thank you. You are doing fantastic work nobody else online is [ to make a bad pun] covering.
+Peglegpete 1 Haha! Thank you!
Very cool! Although I'm really not into costuming at all...you have a great eye! Very keen to spot all of this stuff!
+Jay Malone Haha! Yes, it's a very specific audience!
Totally agree about the Tarley costumes. They do not seem to fit into Westeros at all!.
I wish that thr sand snakes were more developed. They have colorful personality that makes them awesome
Great Job. I really enjoy all your videos.
Thanks so much!
Absolutely fantastic as always!
It is worth noting that the helmets of Tyrell men are made to resemble roses. ;-)
+François-Marie de Vimeur Thanks! Oh, did I not mention that?
I don't believe so, but everything else was spot-on!
+François-Marie de Vimeur Thank you souch for pointing that out! I sometimes have things in my head but forget to add them to the script!
You do a tremendously good work.
hi!! love your videos, been watching them all day lol could u please do for the series mad men? Their costume work is impecable and super accurate imo
I've only seen season 1 but I'll see if I can add it to my list. :)
I just subscribed, this is really quality content ;) Keep up the good work !!
+Aude B Thanks Aude!
AMAZING VIDEO! I am so hyped for the next season!
So your reviews will be about the costumes or the episode itself?
+alvaricomg Yes!
Also, if anyone in Australia needs pleating, Specialty Pleaters in Melbourne have been around forever and are really good (www.specialtypleaters.com.au)
Also, what you call 'Dupioni' silk, here, is called 'Dupion' (no 'i' on the end)!
I am a knitter ;)
Well, I *was*, but arthritis in my hands has stopped me knitting in the last few years.
Hey! Love the concept of this videos! You should do some of these type for the series The White Queen and/or The White Princess!!!
+Eugenia Davyt Thanks for the comment. I'm planning a Network Queens series. :)
Can't wait to see it!! I've been loving ur channel, just recently found it, luckily!! Great job!
+Eugenia Davyt Thank you! Just one more sleep to go!
Awe I actually liked the Tarly costumes, especially their hair
Does anyone role you you are awesome? I always liked looking at the costumes in GoT, but your vid arę just mesmerising and my view of this little pieces of clothes is totally new. Keep it going! You got yoursef a new subscriber
+Justyna Thank you so much!
I've always been interested on the costumes of the brides of Dracula in van helsing do u think u could make a video about them, I would really appreciate it thank you 😊
+Nocturnal Siren Have you seen my Bram Stoker's Dracula video? Or do you mean the movie with Hugh Jackman?
Costume Cinematografico The movie with Hugh Jackman yes 😊 thanks for responding.
+Nocturnal Siren I will have to watch again. It's been a while. ;)
Costume Cinematografico Yay thank you so much! 😊
Agree about the Tarly look. It seems, dare I say, lazy in comparison to other houses. Perhaps it's because they would only be featured for one episode and were therefore a lower priority.
+Glamazon 617 Yeah, I think so and I was thinking it's likely we won't go there again.
Costume Cinematografico I don't think we'll see the ladies again but I don't think we're done with Papa Tarly. ;-)
+Glamazon 617 No definitely not! As I mentioned in my previous video, I suspect that he will side with House Lannister in the siege of Highgarden.
My opinion; Olenna tyrell also has a persian noble woman look to her with how she is dressed up and down.
Hello My Soup Too cold. Yes, there are lots of influences for sure! I'm actually planning a dedicated video to Olenna so I can dig in a bit more. Thanks for commenting.
Liked it before even the video starts.
Your videos are really good❤️
+MinnaMe01 Thank you!
What about Varys and Littlefinger?!! Please do one about their costumes before going to Essos!
+Carla Lussini I know, I have to get to them.
Great! I found your channel yesterday and have already watched all the GoT ones, is so addictive! I love it, THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge.
a channel with +20min videos about costumes, heaven is real
also it's probably no coincidence that they chose the german burgonet as inspiration for the baratheon soldiers, as i read that the stormlands are fashioned after germany - i don't know if it's true though, i got that from a map floating around somewhere that assigns real countries to westeros
+visorah Yes, I had read that as well, I think in a Quora post. The Lannister helm is also based upon the German Sallet, although it also has a Samurai loom about it.
I don't care what anyone says, I think Mace Tyrell's armor looks great. It not as awesome as Loras' armor, but still very impressive.
Yeah, Redwolf said as much on Saturday's livestream. We're going to work on GOTs best armour.
@@Costume_CO I look forward to that video.
Hopefully have that done in a few more weeks. 😁
Geez! You should have seen Jaime's reaction when he saw Mace Tyrell coming in on the horse in that affected solemn manner and that flowery armour. I laughed my ass off!!! Olenna was so right about her son Mace. He was only fit to lay a siege to the banquet table. I think he wore that same armour even when he attacked the food on the banquet table.

thank you for this good video.
It's my pleasure!
I have the strange feeling you didn't like the actress of Myrcella....:D :D awesome video as always can't wait for your weekly reviews :) by the way your background music is really nice :)
+bumblelini Haha! No, wasn't crazy about her. The music is domain free here on UA-cam. :)
Love these videos! You should do Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette!!
+anna-lea mullins Yes, I have it on my list!
even though the dothraki are supposedly based on the mongolians, they do not dress like them at all, therefore danny’s look looking like the mongolians has nothing to do with the dothraki
Can't remember what I said but this video is a few years old now.
I love your videos!!
Thanks Corinthia!
While I'm not a fan of the Dornish costumes either, I actually like the metal sigil-embellished velvet of the Dornish armor. It would be amazing on a leather motorcycle jacket.
Y'nkow, I can't remember what it looked like. I take a closer peek.
Would you ever do The Tudors? A big series I know!
I'm going to do the Queens in an upcoming Network Queens series.
the costumes of ellaria martell with the strong shoulders remind me of burka (caucasus), worn by men in Caucasus (duh). I really had to search the name of it, as I only knew how it looked. What do you think? What could be other historical influences on such structured and sharp shoulders? Or is it a more contemporery fashion influence?
+susiimwunderland Hi there, I will have a look! I thought it was a viper reference, although that is not the shape.
The Tarly Women have these clothes, because their house is all about fighting, battle and hunt. Their words are "first in battle" if i remember correctly. Their house only cares to advance their battle skills, not their fashion.
It looks like you didn't link the London Bead Company in the description (or I am very, very blind). Great video!
I've added it now. Worked late last night. :)
I’m not sure how invested in video games you are but that would be awesome! I would love to hear your knowledge and opinions from things like final fantasy or definitely Skyrim or other TES games armor and costumes.
Hi there, I'm not into video games. My kids are an both have gaming channels.
Can you make a Victoria Grayson costumes video?
The style of Arya's jacket top in season 8 looks a lot like the Mongolian style coat.
Which Mongolian jacket?
I'm sorry if I'm forgetting something, but have you done a segment dedicated to Varys' costumes?
No, I haven't! I still want to do dedicated videos to Varys, Brienne, Tyrion, etc...
Some of the Dornish dresses look like cotton candy.
35:58 It looks like a bird. Is that on purpose or just a side effect?
Which part Ross?
@@Costume_CO It has a tail and wings
Do you mean the armour itself? If so, I'm not sure because it is based upon the original Indian armour. There might be something to it but I don't think that it relates to Dorne in any way except looking exotic.
@@Costume_CO Oh, I put the wrong time stamp. 36:54 the tunic, sorry
+Marianne Cuevas I haven't read the books beyond the first one, but it really is a shame.
Thanks for the suggestion.
your videos are just amazing. please make a patreon account so I can support your work! You clearly work very hard on each video
+Natalie B Thanks so much Natalie! I've put one together but I haven't quite figured it out. I'll find the link for you. ;)
Looks like she was going for a Regency look with Melessa and Talla, tbh.
I thought that at first, but it's not the correct silhouette.
awesome
i think they made the tarley gowns so awful just so you could call them awful plus we viewers of game of thrones had to know that we were entering the world sam got out of and that his papa is a jerk lol in one word a CLUMSY world
I agree that the Tarly costumes were hideous but, you know, I think even they played their part in the story of Westeros.
+Walrus Latte Thanks, as always for your input. Still, could have been well designed, well made.
Please PLEASE never say décolletage EVER again!! I know it sounds french but it is not. The correct word, and make my ears BLEED like in crimpson peak. The real french word is décolleté. :) otherwise please continue!! Your videos are very interesting!! The details you give are really amazing, and I love the reference break down, It's so obvious once you say where it comes from, and you explain it so well! thank you !
+Magnelan1 Haha! Okay, I won't say it. Thanks for the lovely comment. :)
Sams full name ist "Samwell" not "Samuel"
Thanks for the correction.
The Tyrell shields are hungarian shields
Oh yeah? How so?
It's funny to see this kimono style everywhere:
Kontusz (Poland, Cumans, Tatars)
Entari (Iran, India)
? China
? Korea
Kimono, Gi, ... (Japan)
Yes, many of these Eastern countries have inspired one another greatly!
Then there are attires that make you feel really awkward and that feeling is often asymmetric:
Men have much more issues donning more feminine attires, even if those are period pieces that are 100% historically accurate (more dress like, colourful...).
I will look into it. Thank you!
+luhole Apparently, some of the cast, including Peter Dinklage (Tyrion) are vegan so they use pleather/faux furs for those cast members.
India
Totally agree with House Tarly's ladies. It's awful.
Thanks EC. Glad someone is on my side about this. 😁
Did you get pictures? I'd love to see them. 😊
@@Costume_CO Hi sorry for the very late reply. Yes I did get the Starks at the con. Not sure where to post them for you.
Do you want to email me? My address is heidi@costumeco.ca.
Who the hell disliked?!
+Catherine Martin I know! Haha! Some of my favourite creators get thumbs down on awesome content and I always wonder who those people are. My Reign video is my most hated video. I don't really mind, it actually makes things a bit more interesting.
