    I always liked that oxblood red outfit that Jamie wore in season 7. It reminds me of an extremely expensive John Varvatos jacket in terms of color and quality. If I had any sewing skills, I would cosplay in that particular outfit. It’s something that could be worn in modern times and it would not look too out of place.

    @tatianamelendez490 5 років тому +25

    Huh, I didn't think you could fill 20 mins with just Jaime's costumes. Obviously, I was wrong.
    Looking at it more closely with this, I really do love Jaime's evolution. The tan in his initial coats could be a substitute for the Lannister gold symbolizing his pride and arrogance. Then the switch to dark reds, unlike Cersei who wore red like armor, could signify the weight of his guilt at his actions bearing heavily upon him. Throughout the series, we see him steadily shedding the ornate superficiality of his house. He never really looks comfortable when he wears the Kingsguard or the Lannister armor in later seasons, because that's not his anymore. Really, his armor in season 8 is the most comfortable I've seen him in awhile because he had accepted who he truly is.

      yessssss! Great analysis! I agree. Also, I always thought his sheared hair was to show his change as a character as well, as it is cut after he comes back to King's Landing after his journey with Brienne and doesn't grow it out.

    Excellent video! My favorite is Jaime's red "Swashbuckling" coat. I also liked the lion faces on the shoulder's of the Lannister armor, they always seemed so menacing but also a little opulent and tacky for armor. The Dorne costume on Jaime and Bronn has always made me laugh because they look so out of place. I totally get why there are no helmets; why would you want to cover Nikolaj Coster-Waldau's beautiful face? hehe. I also love all the added historical information and references you put into every video.

    wow, so much detail. Thank you for this video, excellent as usual. At first I thought that the helmets of the Barbutes Helms were like those of the Knights of the Vale, but actually the Knights of the Vale have an open face (not sure why I immediately thought Knights of the Vale, maybe something about the shape of the helmets).
    Just want to say that all the work that you put into these videos are greatly appreciated. Seriously I don't understand why your videos don't all have a million views by all the Game of Thrones fans like me. (well I guess not yet at least, but soon) . Maybe a good follow up to this video is on the Dothraki and the Unsullied, but maybe there isn't so much to work with there and I think you already did the Unsullied in one of your costumes of Essos videos. Also, there will be so much material for you coming in the last 3 videos coming up on GOT.

    The Lannister armours are some of my favorites, as they would be mostly functional, though I don´t like their helmets. The helmets aren´t really practical and especially the three combed version would put your spine at risk! Helmets can ironically increase the risk of head and spine injuries, especially when falling from horses (due to adding weight). The last thing you want to do is to increase the lever that someone can put on your neck by striking the top of the helmet.
    The armour itself offers a lot of protection where it is needed the most, but is designed such that it offers much mobility. The gaps at the arm-torso junction would be hard to hit, but you could patch them with a bit of mail (or you could use articulated plates, but that increases the weight cost and decreases the mobility).
    The further down you go, the less relevant armour becomes in general (priority should be: head>breast>back>forearms>upper legs>face>throat>upper arms>>>lower legs). You see this, especially in late armour. There are two main reasons for protecting the lower legs:
    1) you´re on horseback, in which case the shins are the easiest target for enemy footsoldiers
    2) you get too close to a downed opponent, who is still armed (for that thick leather boots or thick puttees could already be significant protection)
    Using scale armour on the upper arms and legs makes a lot of sense, as you don´t expect any upwards thrusts there and generally need no full plate protection.

    It did always kind of confuse me why Lancel was wearing a coat that was similar to the one that Jaime wore in season 1. Because that leather coat is the gambeson all kingsguard wear under their armor, as part of their uniform. First I mistook it for a Lannister coat. But we see later in season 2 that he wears a nearly identical coat under his Lannister armor, but in Black and Red.

    • @Costume_CO
      @Costume_CO  5 років тому +1

      Hi Joey and Jason, they use real metal but also plastic. The principal cast will get the real think along with the stunt doubles, but background players may not. Also they use modern techniques so its not created in an authentic way. They would try to make the armour as light as possible for the actors.

      Haha! Yes, I gave him an entire section of leather. Did you see?

  • @edi9892
    @edi9892 5 років тому +1

    Regarding the leather-coats under the armour: AFAIK, in Europe Gambesons prevailed, though at the time of the Conquistadors, the Cromwell new model army etc. leather became prevalent. I always wondered why. I can´t really tell what would have been more costly back then, but I can say that the gambeson is far more protective, both for blunt force but also cuts and to some degree even thrusts and arrows. However, Gambeson are quite stiff, get very hot and they soak up a lot of sweat (and get even heavier than they normally are).
    Armour grade leather is still very heavy and can be made in various levels of stiffness. The softest would mostly protect from abrasion, whereas something like a biker jacket can already take most of the damage from e.g. a machete swing. Shoe-grade leather will stop most blades (unless you put it into a vice like Coldsteel does), but won´t protect from thrusts or shots.
    Harder leather can pretty much only be used in scales, as it would get destroyed on impact, but it can offer some protection against thrusts and shots.
    In the east, they used multiple layers of linen and occasionally silk, but without padding. They were far less protective, but more comfortable to wear. They still gave some protection against cuts and obviously protected the wearer from abrasion and pressure related injuries of wearing their armour.
