I heard this tune regularly played on a community radio station based at Bathurst, NSW around 1986 when I was doing field work near Oberon. Such a gorgeous song!
They say that music elicits memories and emotions long forgotten. This song takes me back to my Halcyon days in Chch in the early '80's, great bands, great friends, both crazy and sane, and of course, the wonderful women that made it all worthwhile...Arohanui.
@@GaryPeters-nv8pj Oh I’m sorry that I have the audacity to go to a place in public, exist as a woman and expect to be treated like a human being who deserves respect.
A guilty pleasure I kept secret about liking at the time of its release for some reason. Beautiful melody and I like cats too. What's not to like about this.
I first heard this great tune at the Toitu Otago Settler's Museum in Dunedin, NZ, the hometown of this group. A fine, catchy tune. There's a lot of good talent in New Zealand, too bad great stuff like this never made it Canada or The States like Split Enz or Crowded House did.
Lol, I had this song on a flying nun comp, back in the early 90s, in KS, USA. It was out there, I just got lucky to fall in love w The Clean, & sought out all the FN stuff I could find.
I have this cassette, sadly both it and my hearing have deteriorated. I wish women all the best in these days when ii's an uphill battle with no signs of victory since the 60's.
Fion, we never had a chance to meet but we are connected with this song. You introduced me with this amazing song and named our friendship, our weird bond on this song... like we had back then. Just remember, I'll never forget us cz we r our Cactus Cats. Always Love you Fion, you're my Cactus cat. Thank you so much for all the moments we shared. Be happy and sassy. Hisss 🐈
Cats are strongly psychic..some cacti can increase psychic abilities in humans.. anymore questions? oh, yes they were a band comprised solely of women, how strange... And I still love them...
I have the cassette still... and it makes me happy to this day. Classic Dunedin sound, classic Kiwi music.

A very young Robert Scott on the beach 🤩 love the video

@@FlyingNunRecords Yeah, I love The Bats!!!
I lived in Dunedin from 87 to …? sometime- rediscovering this music such a time travel!
Hadn't heard of this group until yesterday. Beautiful song.
I so love the Dunedin Sound and Flying Nun records. It's all so fantastic. New Zealand rules.
My fondest memories of chch in the 80's. Driving from Colombo st to Lincoln College in our Morris Oxford firing up LBGP on the tape deck.

still as good as it was 30 years ago
what a nice song!
I recently began using talking about my cats as a defense against unwanted advances at bars. I guess that would be my cactus cat.
Wouldn't have worked for me :) I could talk about cats for years !
Wouldnt work with me either, I ❤ cats 😻
Are you still alone?
Just maybe you could also have tried not being in bars in the first place.
@@GaryPeters-nv8pj Oh I’m sorry that I have the audacity to go to a place in public, exist as a woman and expect to be treated like a human being who deserves respect.
I would say that this is the Internet's single best cat video!
Empire Tavern, Dunedin..saw these amazing women perform..awesomeness
Revisited this song today. Was listening to this cool Kiwi band in the 80's loved it then love it now makes me feel so young again!
every time I hear '...she's my best friend' I want to cry it's so cute
This is the 1st time I've heard this group/song.. And this was 1986! 👍
It's a gorgeous song
Dunedin Bands set up a some of the most enjoyable music 🎶 and Videos 📹 that reflects a timeless passage for people to enjoy.
I feel like some American indie bands of the early 90's like Unrest, Juliana Hatfield, Velocity Girl, etc. were influenced by these bands.
Dunedin was a Founding Base of some many garage bands, Students letting rip in the Oldest University in Aotearoa.
Love This Song So Much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fuck Yes! love this.....Everything, gats, the bass, vocals wohhhhhooooooo the song
Still have the EP on rotation all these years later.
Real and raw. Great Stuff!!! Hard to find in modern-day music. New music often sound like "plastic". Very unreal.
Love seeing Signal hill in the video!
wow this is great song !!
Walked into Waterfront Records in Sydney and heard this. One of the best days ever!
A guilty pleasure I kept secret about liking at the time of its release for some reason. Beautiful melody and I like cats too. What's not to like about this.
Purrrrrfect
Love this
Played a couple of gigs with this lot when I was in Bros Gorgonzola. They were hard case. Great song.
This is great!
haha, Bob Scott playing with a beachball
great song -a favourite from this era of Dunedin music.
Gorgeous stuff
Had this recorded on my VHS off radio with pictures
Love this song.. such a happy sound..
you go girls. great song
The first cat I owned after leaving home and flinging myself into the world at 16 was called captain cactus. Then this song came out.....perfect.
Blissful.
Pure joy.
very nice ...so beautiful voices!
was born in NZ one year after this. Somehow never heard it. It sounds like it could have been made by a modern indy band, pretty cool.
Still love this. Great song and video for kids actually. They should sing this song at Primary schools, especially in Dunedin.
what a band, they're remind me of alot of c86 indie pop bands in the UK of that time.
Kathy Bull and Lesley Paris and the others rule my musical world
Yay, St Kilda beach
love it.
We need more songs about cats!
Part of my soundtrack : )
Too pefect for words 💜
I cannot believe I have never heard of them before now! Thank you John Connolly on ABC to XTC on 2XM.
It's impossible to not like this song.
Well, sorry to say but I dislike this song AND your comment.

Same place I heard it first myself, late February, 2017. Played it lots of times since.
Same here. First heard this at the Toitu as well, back in 2015. I miss Dunedin every single second of my life.

80's are gone.
Anton used to play this on hid Dead TV love to all the gang
80's Bad hair, but a great song. I never suffered from such bad hair myself back then.
I kinda like the fact that they clearly had the fashion sense of a deranged kindergarten teacher.
a band of school teachers was my first thought.
I have this cassette, sadly both it and my hearing have deteriorated. I wish women all the best in these days when ii's an uphill battle with no signs of victory since the 60's.
top tune + dog at 2.36 is a dead ringer for mine
❤
Lost 80s treasure found.....
The only thing better than cats is... songs about cats....
classic
Cool
Moved to Tucson this year. Still lookin for the cactus cat...
last words of aleister crowley "i am perplexed" me too
I think that the american band Unrest toke the guitar riff from this song for "So So Sick"
Most definitely!! They're practically a Flying Nun & Factory cover band (in the best way)
anyway all of them was great bands
Bliss
almost 30 years on and this song still makes me sing

This song is such an ear worm
Think this is what John squire was listening to when he was writing sally cinnamon then
no one's been here for 3 years.still ok.
Bring back 80’s pop and 90’s grunge... missing both music of these decades
Fuck this is cute
Looks like Robert Scott appearing in the video

reminds me of anway-era magnetic fields, sort of
Cactus coat too
And off back to 99.4fm we go....
does anyone have the tabs?
Is there an instrumental version?
+hey gwynne. Why not try using bars as a defence against unwanted cats,.
Wasn't the drummer romantically involved with the drummer for The Verlaines?
Dig it
so sad :(

LBGP(EP2) says "gender has got nothing to do with it." refreshing wisdom from 1986 at 3.56
Loose Tooth sound a lot like LBGP.
Who's here because of TV1 breakfast show?
Very girly, but decent.
The kiwi breeders….
Love between human and cat is an abomination before god.
