I'm glad to hear somebody finally talking about the importance of impressions. No impressions = no views; YT and YT ALONE is in charge of impressions. I wish there was more rhyme or reason to why one thumbnail (video) is surfaced for 100,000 people and your next thumbnail (video) is only surfaced to 25,000. As a small creator, it often seems like YT is deliberately trying to keep us from being successful.

For me, I think it's mostly the thumbnail that got me going. I started with 23 subscribers about a little over 2 weeks ago, and I only created 4 or so videos since then, really focused on designing my thumbnail. The metrics showed that I got 972 subs over the past 2 weeks. The topic of the video comes second. I just think that youtube algorithm likes you enough to organically promote your video if your thumbnail gets high impressions, and then if your topic is good enough, which gets lot of likes, then the algorithms likes you more to promote better.

Great discussion guys, not sure I'd agree on impressions at No1, unless i'm missing something there is nothing you can do to directly impact impressions. CTR is king and is driven by your title and thumbnail, then if the audience likes your content the average view duration will be high.
Impressions are voodoo, they seem to be impacted by CTR and view duration but also the random whim of the algorithm.

4 or 5 months ago i hit the jackpot on youtube. For a channel with around 300 subs, i used to get over 1k views on every video, with 2 of them having 30k and 47k views. Biggest mistake i did was taking a 3 months break because i was extremely bored with the game i was covering (i'm doing build videos in Elden Ring). After i started again, my views and impressions dropped drastically, only having 1 vid over 1k views, the rest around 300-700 views. My advice would be DON'T STOP, keep creating, especially if you feel you are close to success!

It needs to be a meritocracy. If people are putting in a lot of work to UA-cam UA-cam needs to be rewarding then and if that creator needs a lot of coaching than UA-cam needs to be feeding them that coaching through the algorithm, which they seem to do a little bit but not quite enough.

You could do a series where are you interview creators about their PROCESS of learning to make videos (and sort of pick their brains for us)
How do people set up videos for live streams marks like of a series of clips to go through and how do you know what clubs are safe to go through and which ones aren’t on your channel?

Fantastic topic. And this is something that has always confused me the most. So not really bothered whether a video does good or bad but moreso curious as to what metrics the algorithm uses to show it to people to generate those impressions. Coz yeah there's videos where the impressions are high some where they are low etc so I've always been curious as to where that comes from. Especially in cases where for example i may have a two year old video suddenly blow up and get more impressions but I can never pinpoint what suddenly triggered that interaction and engagement after two years as an example. Is it just random luck? Or maybe the algorithm finally found an audience for the video? Or something else.
Keep up the great work and coverage as always 👊🏿

I had the algorithm notice me like last month and it made one of my videos go kind of viral, which I was really happy about
The problem is it's that only one. All the others have like 200-300ish views compared to 94k of that one particular video. And that kind of confuses and worries me. Was it because I monetized my content? Was it cause of a negative reception of another video? No idea
And I upload pretty consistently, so I'm kinda stuck. My plan for now is just continue on what I'm doing and go with the flow. Even if 100 people out of 3000 still like my content, that's still something.

When I talk about the algorithm, not being people, algorithm doesn’t comprehend how much emotional effort goes into making videos. Obviously not everyone is going to be a dynamic person and makes amazing videos, but UA-cam needs to be utilizing people in the background to make sure that contact creators who are going out of their way to try to learn how to make quality content. Have a good shot at being encouraged and going forward. It’s so hard to hit that record button. It’s so hard to hit the upload button. I try to be at no lower than 4 out of 10, my last video was 2 out of 10....what I noticed is if you make every video good as well as a good title, editing, and thumbnail it usually tends to do pretty well. Also proper tags and seo will make youtube recommend it through other videos similar to your niche.

The thing I still do not understand is when the algorithm suggests my wifes videos (which are talking head history / story of why places are haunted etc) and her audience demographics are closer to middle aged men or ladies and the video suggesting it is "Lazypink TikTok Ahegao Compilation" which is absolutely nothing to do with paranormal / ghost stories and history. 135 impressions from only that video, 0.2% CTR and 7 seconds viewed becuse it is utterly wrong. That makes her video get pretty much squashed.
Anyone else have similar issues with suggested videos?

from what I gathered from my other channels I have a hard time ranking anything on this as you should strive to have them all balanced as possible, as if one was way higher, then I know I did something wrong with that video. Like if my watch time is SUPER high, then I am probably not doing a good job on the thumbnail/title, if my clickthru rate is super high but retention is low, then my videos need work. Its important to keep everything rounded and if not then you know what you need to work on. :)

21:06 watch time is king. I watched your entire video because it was good and had the content I was looking for.
If everyone clicks through and stops watching within 5 seconds, UA-cam will kill your video.

I haven't put much into the ranking of my videos but looking at the current list there are some that do a lot better then others and it can be by a large gap of views. As a human I like seeing good numbers but after years of retail work they are just numbers to me, there will always be a 10th ranked video and there will always be a 1st ranked video. All I can do is enjoy what I'm doing and keep track of what actually works.

I talk about videogame music (adding basic music theory with it) on my channel and I cover some videogame themes acoustically. It takes an astonishing amount of time to analyse and decompose everything to make it understandable and fun. So Watchtime and retention are the things I really look at (and it's kinda stressful).
Thanks for sharing what you feel about analytics, I can relate to that even if I am a really small creator for now

is it good idea to post our shorts as video on COMMUNITY POST? does it got the same view / metric calculation as regular shorts view?
because my shorts is 7-10 seconds, people can just scroll and find my community post and watch the shorts till the end without SOUND on, which is a bad experience, because sound is the soul. also they will just scroll again, because there's no like and comment button for the video when i put it on community post. any tips?

I also made it a how to clean your vape pens video. There’s a great video to watch any time of year and is a huge issue in dealing with the pads but it’s already been pushed to the back burner so that it almost never gets views, even though it’s a super good video and the numbers from the first few days so that how do we get UA-cam to pay attention to those videos that might still be Evergreen. The algorithm doesn’t push forward anymore even though they were Evergreen contact from the start and still are.

Love hearing UA-cam pros saying that the "10/10" makes them feel down or doubt themselves because yep, that's me every time too! But it also changes so it's really not that useful of a tool, I tend to look at long term views / comments / overall engagement to figure out where things really fall. Wouldn't mind having the option to hide that X/10 ranking, honestly.

  • @DanOttawaPOGO

CTR is the most important for me in the first 1-3 hours because that tells me how a video will do. Same sort of statistics:
Over 20%, it's going to be a top ranked video
15%, it's going to be an average video
    10% or below, I'm screwed.

When I get a 1/10, I leave and return to that Dashboard page on my desktop multiple times just to see the confetti party that comes with each view… especially now that those 1s come less and less frequently. 10/10 just renews my decision to back away from YT because apparently nobody but my hard-core viewers gives a 💩 about anything I do. I’m sure that’s seeping into my overall mindset as I continue to try (but with an increasing sense of “why am I even bothering?”). As a result, I’ve cut way back on my publishing schedule to see if I can recapture my sense of having fun, but may just walk away altogether.

Honestly as a small and growing channel I view anything below a 4 out of 10 as a bad videoo because I expect myself to always be competeing with, and outdoing my previous content.
