    thanks for this review style...long have had my mind set on getting a 261 - I have no need for a saw, mind you, but i'm in California and in not too long a time getting a useful powerhead may not be an option. was at my local ace this morning, which has a stihl section, and saw the 271 and almost bought it just based on price and thinking "can't be that big a difference" but as you show, i think it's a big enough difference for me that the 261 will be the choice

      Right, I think it's likely that 2 cycle engines won't be around for too much longer. I've read Husqvarna is reducing their gas offerings to focus on electric power tools, so possibly just a matter of time before others do the same.
      Some of the cordless chainsaws are quite good in the homeowner space, but to my knowledge, no one offers anything close to a mid-sized or larger professional saw that would come close to a MS261 or similar. Not a bad idea to buy a highly durable gas saw while their still available.

      It's a good point; I didn't touch on fuel efficiency. I haven't noticed a difference between the 261 and 271, but both are much more fuel efficient than my old 46cc Craftsman chainsaw made by MTD. I believe the added efficiency comes from higher compression and the stratified engine design. Interesting topic for future video.

    I run saws everyday for a living and I've ran both of these saw for a very long time . In my experience the 271 can be fussy to start at times . Not saying every one has that issue but its happened to me more then a few times . But when ur in a tree or in a bucket it pisses u off when u gotta throttle start ur saw over and over again. The 261 I've never had an issue . That being said if ur just cutting firewood or need a good homeowners saw 271 is definitely a good choice but it isn't the 50cc saw I would recommend tho. That would be the husqvarna 550xp mark ii or 545 xp they are around the same price and prob the best 50cc saws made Imo. And I'm a Stihl guy so it pains me to say it.

    Best comparison video I've seen for these two saws. I've been on the fence, trying to decide which of them to buy. I have an older 026 that is my go to for firewood cutting, (heat both my house and shop with mixed hardwoods). For larger trees I use my 034 with a either a 18 or 24" bar. But my 034 AV needs a new carburetor and the stihl repair guy says the cost will be $250 to convert to different style carb, because of age of saw. I'm 72, so the compression release on the 261 would be a benifit for me. Your video is a huge help for me, thank you for taking the time to share.

      An 034 aftermarket carb is the same as MS340/360 , and can be bought for about £15 in the UK. Majority of Stihl use Chinese Zama carbs , who conveniently Stihl now owns. Hope this helps. It even says on Stihl carbs - Zama . Possibly wasn't on 034 however. The only mod I needed was to remove the throttle connecting button from the original carb (circlip) should you have the old cable on the hedge trimmers, the chainsaws you do not have that issue

I have a Husqvarna 450 I have been using a few years now and just bought the Stihl MS261 because they start real easy, the M-Tronics keeps it tuned and as I am getting older so the decompression valve and less weight is waaaaaaay worth the extra money.

    So easy to start. Two position start switch is really effective.
    I love the air filter cartridge. So easy to clean. And quarter turn retaining screws are so much better than the old type. You can't loose them.

I was cutting side by side with a friend who was using a cheap rental gas-powered chainsaw. He was able to make 20 cuts to my one cut. So, while a few seconds per cut is a noticeable difference any chainsaw is a fantastic tool compared to the old school option. The price difference in the saws was spent initially on PPE, fuel, extra chain etc. It's interesting how much the extra 1/2 HP works out so well. My advice is to warm up the saw at least 30 seconds before cutting, use a good synthetic oil, keep your chain sharp, and let the saw cool between cuts or mid-way through a long cut, and the saw should last a good long while.

    Seems only the solenoid (M-tronic) version can be had now, I'll ask my dealer though, but if they can't get the non-"moronic" (what the pro's call them) I'd have to get a 12-13 year old used saw which will probably outlast me but in the offchance it doesn't (I'm talking major powerhead/clamshell failure) I'll be out of warranty and luck.
    Been reading up on it and from what I can see, the early variants are the ones to watch out for, but little to nothing from professionals about the later versions so I guess they've given up entirely.

      Some dealers just try to sell you what they have on hand and don't want to deal with order requests, so I might suggest calling around and specifically ask to order the version you want if they don't have it in stock.

    The rim sprocket on the pro saw has the advantage of changing it out easy without replacing the whole clutch drum. Also you can change from a 6,7 or 8 tooth sprockets as long as you get the oiler worm gear that matches and to other chain pitch too. It is more versatile.
    The pro saws are meant to hold up longer through heavier use than the homeowner saws. All around better quality.

    Thanks... That was an excellent video.... I always look at durability well before I look at performance etc. The 261 would be my choice for that alone. I'm still using a 260C after 20yrs and even if its getting a bit old, it still sings pretty well while it throws chain oil everywhere..... But it was built like a tank and that's how I like gear to be. If the 261 is anywhere near as good, then most likely it will be the last machine I ever buy.....

And second, Serial Number or engine number..... Does yours start with either 1 2 or 5? If it starts with 8 then I'll keep on walking.
      By the way, how is Portland looking these days? Its been looking pretty ugly for a few years now from what we've seen coming out of the country on video and news.

      @@RollingEasy Yes, one difference that I forgot to mention in the video is that the MS261 has an adjustable oiler and the MS271 does not.
      Most of the newer Stihl saws available in the states (mine included) start with a 5 in the serial # and are assembled in the US.
      The crime rate in Portland has increased significantly over the last few years. Property crime, shootings, and drugs have all increased. Where it used to be safer than most US cities its size, it's now closer to average or somewhat worse. The kinds of crimes that are happening frequently now used to be rare.

I absolutely and totally refuse to give one single cent of my money over to Xhina....
      Most crimes today are based around drugs one way or another.... If I had the power to impose sentences, I would give every dealer, importer, seller and manufacture of drugs 25yrs in the slammer with not a second of parole or reduced time until those 25yrs were up. I'm actually being kind saying that. The truth is I'd do the same thing to them that some Asian countries do to their drug dealers.

      @@RollingEasy To my knowledge, none of the Stihl pro saws, including the MS261, are made in China. The MS261 is typically made in Germany for markets outside of the US.
      As for the M-tronic, the performance won't be different, but the long-term cost will be higher. I went with the standard version because the ignition coil on the M-tronic cost about $100 more than the standard ignition coil as it contains the micro-controller. It also takes dealers longer to get the M-tronic coil in stock for some reason. Anyway, I prefer simple designs, but a lot of pros are using the M-tronic without issue.
      With that said, I would also not hesitate to own a Husqvarna pro saw. I went with Stihl primarily due to the better power to weight ratio. The new Husq 550XP has equivalent power to the MS261, but weighs 1.1 lb (0.5kg) more.

    • @outdoorsinoregon
      @outdoorsinoregon  Рік тому +1

      Actually, before I bought the 261 seen in the video, I bought a used early version 261 CM from ebay. Seller claimed no issues, but it ran terribly when I got it, and I found it had a bad solenoid.
      Stihl dealer wanted around $120 for the special order part (a solenoid for the standard 261 was only around $20 and readily available). I ended up returning the saw, as I didn't want to put another $120 into it, and I ended up buying the standard version 261 instead.
      On the 261 CM, the microcontroller for the carb is attached to the solenoid and that's what makes the solenoid so expensive. Anyway that's why I ended up with the 261 instead of the 261 CM. The CM is a great saw too, but at some point the solenoid will need replacement, adding quite a bit of cost to the saw.

    I have a 271 (16 inch bar) that I have owned for about 8 years. I’ve used it in walnut and almond orchards as well as cutting oak at home. I have no complaints, but I don’t use it as much as my MS 180 and 180c (I just received a MS 194T I can’t wait to use). I prefer a lighter saw. I would like to get a larger saw with an 18 or 20 inch bar, but I’m not sure what Stihl saw I should get??? I’m mostly cutting oak, and walnut. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    • @outdoorsinoregon
      @outdoorsinoregon  Рік тому

      I think it depends on how much smaller wood vs. larger wood you need to cut.
      If you're looking for a small/light saw that can run an 18" bar, the MS211 is hard to beat. With a 14" bar, it's light enough that you won't get tired using it for de-limbing all day long. And for occasional larger wood, you can put up to an 18" bar on it. It would be slower cutting than your 271, but much lighter.
      If you're cutting more larger wood and just want to lighten the load a bit, I would suggest the 261.
      I have more videos on the often overlooked MS211 coming up. It has some really interesting attributes.

      Although both chainsaws have 50cc engines, the engine designs are different, and as far as I know, there is no easy way to add the decompression valve to the 271. Perhaps one could drill and tap their own hole to accept a valve, but at the risk of doing some damage.

    When it starts on that second choke, I heard somebody who services these saws say that you should immediately squeeze the trigger and get it to regular run mode and take it off of choke. Even running it for 10 to 15 seconds on High choke is not good for the saw is what they said.

    • @outdoorsinoregon
      @outdoorsinoregon  6 місяців тому +1

      When the saw is cold, and it's cold outside, the saw will have a tendency to stall if you take it out of half choke immediately. Letting it run for a few seconds will prevent having to restart it. Letting a cold saw run for a prolonged time at high idle can definitely damage then engine as internals expand at different rates while warming up, but a few seconds won't hurt it based on my experience.
