    Gosh Julian, that street corner is looking really good. Great that you are recycling near ten-year-old models, and they look just as good as the new ones. And the family connection adds to the fun.
    Back at the warehouse I am sorry to see the protesting workers having to make their point. Even worse that so many workers here are having to protest once again, so it seems very relevant. One thing missing is a brazier, a familiar site on pickets when I was a kid. You could have one of those flickering led sets for fires inside. As to the crane it seems to me that it would have been very useful having the extra length, both for reaching the upper floors and also for getting larger loads off big trucks which couldn't or wouldn't fit through the gates and preferred to 'park' in the street outside. At least that's my take on it. We used to have a small brewery distribution plant at the end of the road when I was a kid and you often saw them offloading big bundles of crates (not sure if they were on pallets, back then) with their crane. I think that one may have swung out from the wall, and may well have gone by the early 70s.

      Thank you for your kind feedback and sharing your childhood memories of a local industry with its crane facilities, it's always fascinating to hear of folks memories and experiences of days gone by and how industries use to operate.

    Hi Julian. I love watching your layout progress. Would you be able to do a walk around your layout room? I would love to get a sense of the whole layout. Awesome update as always.

      I put together a full layout tour video about 5 months ago which will give you a good general overview of the layout, it's not too out of date... ua-cam.com/video/u3JIwpWsl4k/v-deo.html

      Haha, love the strike scene! “Solidarity, brothers!” 😉 The crane really does give a credence to the scene, though I wonder if you might ‘tatty-up’ a few cap stones on the base to ,are it look like it has been a bit neglected? Maybe cut and ‘displace’ one on the floor next to it? 🤓
      I do rather like the dedications to the family with appropriate businesses, something I remember doing with my dad on our first layout in the early 1970s, where he build a shop called “Tim’s Toys”😅 I think you have used Tony’s gluey card technique very well. It’s a very clever technique and Tony used it widely on South Shields (What a model THAT is! 😲) to create all kinds of masonry pieces. The row of shops is becoming very atmospheric too, and reminds me of the row of houses up to Arkwright’s shop in Open All Hours (don’t know if you know the programme 😉), especially as the road on the corner slopes downwards in the same way!🤔
      Great stuff mate, love it! 👍🍀🍻

    Hi Julian great shop buildings, attention to detail is spot on. Crane boom is perhaps a little on the big side love the protesters outside. Many thanks for sharing take care regards Barry..

      @StationRoadModelRailway  Рік тому

      Thanks Barry. I'm still undecided about the boom length on the crane. I noticed another comment where they think the length is about right. I have to consider the fact the warehouse yard is small by real-life standards, so this makes the boom seem bigger.

    Hi Julian. Warehouse Closure: I love the scene containing the redundant workers holding a protest rally - a fairly rare scene in modelling, I think. Corner Shop: I like these but I'm not sure about the external lamp - I think it looks too large (although I'm sure it IS OO scale). Low Relief Shops: I love the adapted roof. Plans Across the Street: Where you joined the buildings together, I think an additional chimney above the shop would have finished it off rather nicely (assuming you HAD got a chimney).

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  Рік тому

      Thanks Paul for your feedback and suggestions. I think the external lamp is a little over-scale but they're the smallest lamps I have access to of that particular style, and an additional chimney on the shops opposite is definitely on the cards.

    A chain locking the gates closed would be a nice, if not necessary, touch. Maybe even a small van parked behind the gates, in a deliberate blocking manner. As in all other parts of your layout, your building, road, landscape relationships, all look natural. Any limitations, ie model v reality, or practical restrictions you encounter, are overcome. You find solutions that don’t involve compromise. Looking forward to another area completed, and trains bringing it to life.

      Thank you for your kind feedback. That's part of the fun with planning a model railway layout, finding solutions to the various constraints and hurdles a layout might throw at us. I do plan to wrap some chain around the gates but I can't find the tiny black chain I bought years ago that would suit this perfectly, I'm still hunting😯

    Hi Julian
    So enjoy watching your videos and seeing the scenes come together. Like the way you get a story in your mind and then develop scene and cameos around the story, definitely gives purpose and interest to what is in your model..
    When you put the corner shop in place, I though - hang on, he said it was going to be low relief. It was only when you changed camera angle I saw what you had done, so a nice bit of modelling and illusion.

      @StationRoadModelRailway  Рік тому

      Thanks Mark. The corner shop was an oddity in some respects as it's low relief and then not low relief because of its corner position.

    Dear Julian, love those scenes you came up with. Think the crane’s boom is appropriate. Seems it’s also able to deliver heavy goods on the upper floors.
    Very interesting street scene. The addition to the Metcalfe low relief shops is awesome. The transition to the flat roof very accurate. Also, the on the roof edge low fencing is very appropriate for these buildings. Think it adds a great level of detail and interest to these buildings, the street and am very curious to see the overall looks and perspective it creates from the further up opposite viewing point.
    Very cool vid!!

    Great work as usual Julian. I agree on card buildings lasting over time, I think it's only in high humidity or cold and damp environments where they might warp and cause issues.
    The Peco crane kit boom always looked too long to me too, that's why I ended up getting a wills crane kit, but that would likely be too small for your application.
    I'm amazed you can get those laser cut details so nicely done. I've got to look at getting one someday.
    Flat roofs on large more imposing buildings like those 3 storey ones were quite common from memory. Looking forward to the next installment.

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  Рік тому

      Thanks Gerry. Fortunately here in the South Island of NZ, humidity is not an issue but extreme temperature fluctuations can present their problems, hence applying matt clear coats to card structures. The garage can see summer temps reach 40ºc and down to 3ºc in winter.

    Nice work as always.
    So much detail. 👍
    One thing that always intrigues me is having static people on a train layout with moving trains.
    I've always found this a bit odd.
    Moving people are not easy to install and don't look very authentic yet sadly.
    Personal preference obviously.
    The layout is looking great.

      Thanks Monique. Animated people would certainly be a challenge. The closets I can think of is Grahams Lakeside layout where he has himself and his wife circling the streets on push-bikes using the magnorail system (I think).

    Great work on the warehouse closure. Quite topical with protesters outside although at the moment here in the UK it’s more about pay rises than closures. I like what you’ve done with the houses and shops around the warehouse. I like the Metcalfe kits, they look great and the instructions are very clear. I have varnished all of mine just in case, my layout is in the loft room which is heated so should be fine. Thanks for sharing your progress Julian, always a pleasure to watch. Roy.

    Hi Julian what a lovely street you have created, and you are dead right about the quality of Metcalfe card kits. The boom on the crane, you should leave as is. as you have said it already lines up with the entrance for lifting of any loads. i do think you should have a pub in and that area. as i am sure there would have been one so close to the big warehouse, for when the work force would leave on a Friday afternoon shift and go for a pint before heading off home. just a thought. very creative work from you as always...many thanks for sharing Tony

      Hi Tony and many thanks for your kind words. You're absolutely right about a pub in the vicinity, so my thoughts are maybe to adapt the other corner shop (not the low-relief one) which is currently empty (a grocery store) into a pub, it's just around the corner next to the goods yard.

    Really enjoying this so far, your videos popped up this afternoon and I've watched a few hours worth already.
    I'm not surehow far you are planning the coal yard but I found out when planning my recent layout that lots of modellers put the coal staithes/bunkers up against the track, but in reality wagons were unloaded by hand onto a lorry or cart at the wagon level, and the bunkers were often at right angles to the track or further away, but not open towards the track as often modelled.
    I look forward to seeing more :) Tom

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  Рік тому

      Thanks Tom. By the time I finally get the opportunity to respond to past comments, the coal staithes have now been modelled (check out the latests videos) and I've positioned them facing away from the track. After quite a bit of research I found many coal staithes were in this position where the coal stacks faced the lorry/cart side for hand-loading and the staithes rear retaining wall was against the track. This allowed the side hatch on the coal wagon to be opened and fill the coal stacks.

    Hi Julian . With regard to the brick textures from Adobe do you know if they can be used with the basic SE version of Adobe that is often bundled with new computers. Because currently they do a 30 day free trial that you can get up to 10 Images. I would advise anyone to check out the small print, but it appears that you can cancel risk free if done before the free trial ends.

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  Рік тому

      HI Glyn and apologies for the slow response. I'm not sure what is offered with an SE or trial period with Adobe. The textures are accessed through Adobe Stock which I have access to as an Adobe Creative Cloud subscriber. I suspect you would need to have a Creative Cloud account to purchase textures, I'm not sure non-subscribers can access the Stock Library for one-off purchases.
