Super well-done, as usual. Subscribed. ... Now to go find Part 1. 😁 I think the F4 had just made my Must-Have List. I just took delivery of an N90s (F90x to you, I think) yesterday, and it's a cracking good camera for $20, but it's also no F4...
I absolutely loved your video on the Nikon F4. I was going to buy a F5 but on watching both videos you have done on the F4 has convinced me that the F4 might be the better buy over the F5. The thing I love with the F4 is you can use a battery pack if you need to, or just use the 4 x AA’s in camera thus saving on weight like you were in the videos. The other thing I like is that it is more old school with the dials that one needs to adjust prior to taking your shot. The light below the viewfinder that lights up the aperture ring on the lens is a bonus. I think the F5 has got that feature as well. The F4 would be a great addition to my Nikon D300, Nikon F60D Panorama, and my Nikon F80. I only like shooting photos not video as I am old school. I noted that you used a Nikon SB-800 Speedlight on the F4, but I have got a SB-600 and a SB-5000 so I would assume that both of these flashes would work okay on the F4 wouldn’t they? I just need to find a mint or near mint F4 now. I will let you know how I go on that front.
I brought this F4 in this condition. My previous F4s was also good, but it had some shine to the paintwork. Whereas this one has it's original matte finish. There is some LCD bleed in the exposure compensation window through the viewfinder, but it doesn't bother me. This one was produced in 1993, so it doesn't have all the slight modifications made during the F4's production. The last ones were made in 1997, so if you've got a choice go for a later one. But it may still develop LCD bleed.
Thank you for the Complete lens compatibility explanation. Just purchased a nice F4. I have Nikkor G lenses including a 50mm 1.8. I shook primarily in Aperture mode. Ordered a 50mm 1.8 D lens. Also have a Nikkor 50mm 1.4 non AI (purchased in early 70s). Have a Nikon DF but never fully understood how to mount this lens on my Df. Now I do and understand when to do the stop down metering. Improvement suggestion is to pause and hold the camera still. Thanks again for the video.
Thank you for both videos on this camera. Very informative. I've always used manual focus SLRs (Canon, Pentax and Minolta) and wanted to get a decent autofocus one, and try Nikon. I'm currently undecided between the Nikon F90X and the F4, but I confess that after watching your videos, I'm leaning towards the F4 more. The controls look more straightforward, and the vast lens compatibility may be the most convincing factor. Cheers, Rick
Many thanks for your videos. I have a Nikon F3 and just bought a Nikon F4S. I have found your videos to be well thought out, understandable, clear and concise. The F4S is quite a camera but you cleared a lot up for me. Cheers and keep it up........Steven
Thanks for your videos. I have an F4 that's been in mothballs for over five years. Just got a "new" lens today so i'm ready to go, but it wasn't focusing. Guess why? It was locked(which I didn't even know could lock). So relieved, and thanks for the assist!
Great video amd explanation. I recently picked up one with a 35-105 zoom lens and sb-28dx (flash works but broken hot shoe mount) for $50! Great steal!
Thank you for your F4 overview. Recently bought a F4s in nice condition it also has some LCD bleed (on both) but everything is still readable. Otherwise in very good condition, slight wear on the bottom part but nothing major. Great camera.
How did you get that white body cap to stay on lol I bought mine recently , serial number starts with 222 ×××××× $ 250 total .. it actually cost me $247 but with import fee to Canada the prism is in awesome condition it is built like a tank I think it was going a bit cheaper since the serial number was 222×××××× it was one of the earliest Nikon F4
Top job mate I wanted this cam back in the day but couldn’t afford the switch so at the time got the Minolta 9 to go with my Minolta 300 2.8 the 9 was and still is incredible. When didge took off I went with the D1h crackin cam only replaced after I drown it the replacement was the D3s which is still goin strong I just picked up an F4 cheap as chips good Nick too can’t wait to put a roll through it liked and subbed ma ta
Great video. I lost my F4 on a trip across Southeast Asia. Am now planning on replacing it. Can I ask how you got the camera to look so good? Did you buy it in that condition or did you apply some miracle fluid of some sort? And would you recommend buying a later post-2000 model, or are the earlier ones just as reliable? Thanks in advance.
When we use a G lens, let's say the right exposure is f8 and 1//200, we can't set the aperture manually but if we set the shutter speed to 200 (on S mode), will the camera set the aperture to f8 or will it just default it to the largest aperture? Please help. This may be a deal breaker for me as most of the lenses I have are G. The only lens I could use is the 50mm f1.8 D
The F4 had many upgrades during it's production,as Nikon was overwhelmed by demanded! Think"Beta Testing"! This just in from "Deep Sushi",Last change at SN#24501XX!

Thanks! Those flashes should work on the F4. Happy hunting!
Just ordered one of these yesterday, lovely to hear about it from a fellow Brit!
Excellent video on the Nikon F4. Many thanks for taking the time to do it . Learned a lot
Thanks for taking the time in covering the more detailed information regarding the F4. Tremendous help.
J P Glad you found it useful. Makes it all worthwhile!

Yes, I have one without the LCD bleed but every other one I have looked through (about 6 others) all stuffed the bleeding problem
Thank you enormously for your detailed video. I am waiting for arrival of my F4 and love the lens adaptability of this body.
Glad you found it useful!

When using the F4 with newer G lenses in S or P mode, does it show at what F stop it's using in the viewfinder?

The F4 works correctly with G lenses in Program & Shutter Priority modes, so will set the aperture to f/8 in your example.
Can you use it in both shutter and Aperture priority mode with an Ai lens ? Thank you
Aperture priority yes, but you need a AI-S lens set at the minimum aperture for shutter priority.
Thanks for the instructions still learning about mine.
Tracy Hawley You're welcome!
Very Informative Videos.......... Thanks
Great video!!! I think you need a new table cloth though. What if the Vicar comes 'round for tea..
Very informative. Thank you.
What sources do you recommend for good info about Nikon and other cameras?
I love all the old Nikon F cameras but i've always hated the battery holders on the F4...
nice :)
