Gotta say, a blind storm god bent on destroying all life because he blames life for separating his parents is really engaging. You don’t get engaging conflicts like that in every culture’s mythes. Kudos
"who'd actually want to be Māori?"
ummm I didn't get much of a choice
My grandad, who is Māori, never taught any of us about his culture, its kinda sad.
I never got to know anything about the history of my family because he didn't like it.
Im way too mixed to be considered Māori, I wish he told me about where he came from. I don't know how he could look at a culture so strong and so beautiful and think "nah".
People should be proud to be Māori.
@@venus_ai I felt that first part. My great grandad never talked about his history because he was messed up by the Kokoda Track campaign and other events up in PNG. We have suspicions that he's Indigenous because he was undocumented and lived out bush taking care of his siblings. He knew the local lingo and was a respected outback wrangler with other Indigenous men. I wish he was able to tell us more, but the war only awarded him with deafness, impaired vision, severe nightmares, and dementia. So I can't blame him for trying to preserve his conscious by not trying to re-live what must have been absolutely disgusting things.
@@user-dg3ug7ny5d that sounds horrible! I hope he's okay.
My grandad won't tell me anything because he's a drunk, unfortunately. Love him to bits but all he wants is to be seen as a white British dude.
@@venus_ai He died in 2017 but most veterans don't make it to 93, so he was strong. It's sad how ingrained internalised racism still is, especially in people that were "adopted" as a kid and grew up with a white family. He sounds like a good man, just someone who's very confused with his life and I feel that. At least you can continue on in understanding your heritage where he hasn't been able to :)
@@user-dg3ug7ny5d unfortunately yeah, I hope he rests in power.
I love learning about my heritage, especially because my family comes from so many places (Māori, Iranian, Maltese, English), I find it interesting how my parents and grandparents all found eachother in one place, but have all come from different countries.
Don't torture us like this, the premier is so far out.
didn't even know what māori was before clicking this video, but I love learning :) this seems like such an amazing culture, and the fact they didn't have a written language before colonization amazes me!
everyone in the theater here in nz did a (happy) gasp seeing tūmatauenga on screen in thor:)
thankyou! so many of my coworkers are maori, gotta be 60-70%. seeing a fella with moko for the first time irl (being a sheltered immigrant) was a stunning experience. its a beutiful historical and modern culture, so much value is placed in kindness for the sake of kindness. genuinely some of the sweetest people ive had the pleasure to have a drink with lol
For the people who dont know, the dance performed at 4:14 is called the haka. Its a ceremonial war dance. My uncle is Māori and performed one at my nans funeral. (But please correct me if im wrong!)
Also can we maybe see a video compilaton of Indigenous Australian people?
@@pigeon2531 The haka is such a chilling spectacle to watch. I've always grown up seeing it when we play the All Blacks and I've always been jealous that our culture here is still so fractured that we've only recently had our own ceremonial war dance to contribute. I actually have a little kiwi bird doll that does the haka and have loved it since I was a kid. Also yes please to videos from here! Also congrats on the recent land back, bro. I know Jacinda's under pressure to be replaced but land back and reparations are always great! :)
@@user-dg3ug7ny5d Land Back? Sorry im not too updated with recent events and im not Indigenous Australian myself (Shouldve clarified) Down here in the South West of WA, we get taught alot about the native people of our home town and their language. NAIDOC week was celebrated recently too! I just like learning about this kind of stuff and it would be nice to see the rep for the Indigenous Australians as they are rarely seen anywhere in media or on the internet :) My aunt and uncle (same uncle) have a cute wedding statue thingy with a koala and a kiwi bird to represent them.
@@pigeon2531 Ah! I thought you were Kiwi. The land back was referring to last weeks decision to return 36 sites of cultural significance as well as deliver NZ$177m in financial redress to the ~46,000 members of the Waikato-based iwi (North Island). That was what happened in NZ.
I'm in SW WA too! Glad to see a local on here. I've always grown up interested in our local peoples and the Nation I live on (me being Whadjuk Nation of the Noongar Peoples), so I completely understand wanting to learn more about the cultures in our region. 100% for more local representation, especially in supporting greater understanding that will help approval rates for the Voice to Parliament referendum next year.
Hope the burn-off smoke isn't near you. It's really strong where I am.
@@user-dg3ug7ny5d Im glad i know of the land back now! That is great news for native reparations :) Im not native at all myself but i believe the traditonal land my city falls on is Wardani or Pindjarup. Havent had any burn-off smoke here yet but as it warms up more we will definitely get some.
THANK YOU
np :)
E rawe ana tēnei! He aroha ki au te kite i nga tikanga Māori

Thank you so much for this! Have been waiting eagerly ever since you responded positively to the request!!
as a māori person i am so happy to see we are finally getting noticed, we were silenced for long and im happy i finally get to be proud of my culture
Finally, you say, why didn't you do so in the past? couldn't be bothered I bet and now you see of money and the possibility of wealth? sorry not going to happen this is all Ardern BS.
Hey you yes you remember to take care of yourself gosh darn it, you are always valid, and I love you and care about you so please take care of yourself 💜💜🤗🤗💜💜🤗🤗

I know, it's beautiful!!
Drop the petition link
I second this!!
I went to his page and looked, the petition has closed already with 70k signatures.
I loved this video so much! I also like studying languages and the Maori language is among the prettier languages imo.
I'm not Māori but this tiktok compilation was very cool. It's always good to learn about other cultures and celebrate them!! (Respectfully. Cultural Appropriation is gross.)
OMG this is awesome!!
if i may suggest this, itd be really cool if you also did a compilation for aboriginal/indigenous australians
This was here great, thanks dude!
Love to see these kinds of videos

@i hate twitter wtf is that supposed to mean.
@i hate twitter fucking transphobe? whats the point of coming on to a youtube video and telling someone that their identity is stupid and calling them a clown and a soft brain? what do you hope to achieve by saying that? you're not making me feel shit about myself for being trans, im proud of my identity and some random shit-for-brains on the internet isn't going to make me feel bad. im proud of who i am

To any Maori people in the comments: do you guys want people to stop coming to New Zealand the same way that indigenous Hawaiians want people to stop coming there? I want to leave the US and New Zealand has been on the list, but I don't want to engage in pushing out the indigenous people if that is an issue.
Māori warriors actively threatened the British that they would eat them if they invaded, so they're not leaving their homelands that easy or without a fight. Never have. Never will. Also, it's a very different political climate to the US, because the government just handed back more land the other day after they have been protesting since like the 1930s, so the power imbalance is not as blatant in NZ compared to the US. That's sad the Indigenous peoples of Hawai'i are experiencing that, though. I knew about the dichotomy there in how there's the rich, touristy places and then there's the places trashed by pollution and that. I would suggest government intervention, but I know it'd probably cause mass incarceration of the Indigenous peoples, rather than kick the money fuckers out.
Māori representation, woo!
Yo that petition
where can I sign
I've already copied and pasted the links in a few other posts but basically the petition has already been handed over to parliament but- if you want- you can help the Mōri party in other campaigns; here's a link to their website: www.maoriparty.org.nz/campaigns
yes
New Zealand IS called Aotearoa. The name of our country is Aotearoa New Zealand. It says so right on our passports. I don't know what this guy is on about.
could you give the name and/or link to the petition, would be great ^^
Hey guys, I’m white, but can any actual Māori tell me how they feel about Moana and the character of Maui?
Moana is actually the depiction of multiple Polynesian cultures and mythology, not just based on Aotearoa. This includes Samoa, Tonga, Hawai'i and a few other places where they gathered inspiration from.
TAMOKO IS
NOT TATTOO,!
IT IS THE MOST UNIQUE BODY ART WORK IF ITS KIND! TAMOKO is the artform of our reo it tells if our heritage our tipuna!

why are you telling us like two weeks in advance? i love your content but don’t you get enough promo with your clothing commercials in your videos? …😐
oh, the special videos I make, I always set as premieres on Wednesdays. I'm not sure how this is promo exactly?
