It changed dramatically in the late 80s. In the 70s we ice fished with cars & 4 wheelers on the ice in state park & amusement park coves. Then early 80s it began to become pretty sketchy. Mid 80s it was inconsistent & at times dangerous to ice fish. 1987 Feb I went through the ice out in the state park cove. A ice fishing hole had widened from rain & refroze. The night before was a dusting of snow & I didn’t see the inconsistency of the ice in that spot. Luckily I immediately got out. Went to the heated bathrooms by the ranger station to dry off. It has never been the same. 95-96 was cold and a foot of ice but nothing close ever since. Have to go to north east PA for safe ice these days.
This report is misleading. This is not the first year for an Algae bloom they have been happening since the beginning of time. This is just the first year the NJ DEP NJ DOH over stepped thier authority and closed beaches based on a response guide that the DEP developed last year. Had they have tested last year and the year before the lake would have been at 20,000 cells of cyanobacteria or more. The NJ DEP has set unrealistic low thresholds with no evidence or explanation of why. Based on the World Health Organization and the federal EPA. No lake in New Jersey was unsafe do to an algae bloom. People need to research cyanobacteria you will learn not only has it been around since T-Rex it is also a nutritional supplement.
Global warming caused the algal bloom? How about land use change and non-point pollution? How much of that watershed has been built into green lawn subdivision in the last 30 years? Better yet how many people around the lake are fertilizing thier land. Why would you assume that global warming is the most important factor in the bloom?
@@jaridkeen123 warm water doesn't do anything without nutrient loading, I'm confident that most of the damage to that lake is being done by the people living in the watershed.
What’s scary is that these are the ripple effects of years past, not what is to come. It’s only getting worse. I know that the water levels have risen in my coastal town, the water used to be lower- the tide is consistently much higher.

Fish is happy. Don't you want fish to be happy? Don't be selfish.
Please, climate change. The temperture of the earth has raised 2 degrees in 100 years. Im 60 years old, been in the hopatcong area for 45 years. Water is always warm for swimming every summer. People complaining about so much rain last year, must be climate change... well, this year there wasnt a lot of rain, which lowered the level of the lake, we all took our boats out early. Wow, is that climate change too?! People are watching too much of main stream media. Hurricanes, storms, tornadoes... been around for thousands of years, must be climate change. Please!!
@@bellthrunight, I'm not a science denier but I question why the assumption is that increased lake temps are the driving factor in the algal bloom. If temps alone drove algal blooms then every lake with the same temperature profile would also have algal blooms and this is not the case. Don't you think that the algal bloom has more to do water pollution?
We see the impact on businesses all over the country and it's not climate change
Somebody stop the sun from shining

The water was frozen af last year.

Glaciers are a cycle. New Jersey and New York were completely covered by glaciers.

Because they're perfect conditions
The water is getting warmer, you need warm water to have an Algae Bloom
@@jaridkeen123 , do you think that water temperature is the dominant factor?

Get rid of Asphalt and Concrete that retains heat into the night...

How often did they measure the water temperature over the last 20 years (every day?) and in how many locations? Is the data accurate?
I’m in agreement with this segment.
Climate change ya rite !!! Lmfao 🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
